aonthehill replied to NovemberSleever's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Did you have your surgery on 3/27?? I'm scheduled for 6/20... I'm having a revision from the sleeve to the DS... how did things go for you? -

I originally had RnY bypass - and revised to a new RnY bypass. Further distallized the connection between stomach pouch and intestine; made a smaller stomach pouch, and removed some excess intestine from the first procedure. (The "Candy Cane" portion.) -
bmi at revision surgery
Pinkpeonies1 replied to jnewbie's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had my band removed at 25 BMI due to complications... a slipped band (twice), acid reflux, Gerd and pain. However, I did not qualify for a revision since my BMI was so low and my sleep apnea went away. Since the removal I have gained all my weight back and more due to medical issues and medication I'm on. I am now at a 36 BMI and reapplied for a revision but my old insurance denied it 3 times stating it was not medically necessary although I regained, BMI is over 36 and sleep apnea returned. I went through the process over and over, classes, paperwork, dr appts you name it and although my band was removed due to medical necessity I struggled to finally get the revision approved. Point is you may have a difficult time getting a revision approved if you are at a low BMI. -
bmi at revision surgery

I'm really interested in this too. I am actually going to be a sleeve to bypass revision because of GERD/Barrett's, and am wondering if the recovery is any easier than your initial surgery if you now how a normal BMI. I'm also sort of nervous about losing too much too quickly. -
I'm going to be a March Bypasser as well. Surgery set for the 21st. I'm a Band to Bypass revision, so hopefully everything goes well and I can revise in 1 surgery rather than 2, but I won't know that until I wake up from surgery. Fingers crossed.

Will it work for me - if I can, I will cheat
Tiffykins replied to pingu's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First off, there are just as many bypass patients that have significant regain because ALL of the weight loss surgery choices can be cheated. The malabsoprtion of calories/carbs/fats only lasts about 2 years, and then intestinal adaptation takes over, and all you'll have is the restriction of a stretchy pouch. So, if you're going to cheat, any of the surgeries will fail. If you do not address the emotional/mental aspect of making better food choices, none of the surgeries will work long term. Hate to be "debbie downer", but there's way too many stories of people getting surgery, and then regaining in 3-5 years out because they never worked on their relationship with food. You can check out the revision forum on obesityhelp.com and see just how many RNY patients are looking for revision because they've gained back hoards of weight, and can't lose it again even with diet and exercise. I removed the word "cheat" from my vocabulary when it comes to what I eat now. I just have to decide if the food I'm choosing to put in my mouth is nutrient dense or junk food. If I want to have junk, have I compensated it by ensuring I've eaten or will eat my Protein that day? Long term results with bypass and sleeve patients are only about 3-5% higher weight loss numbers for bypass patients. So, long term, you're looking at the same issue if you choose to not address your mental tie to food. My recommendation is to not have surgery until you are ready with other coping mechanisms in place to deal with food. Finding a support group, counselor that has experience with weight loss surgery patients are your best bets. They operate on our stomach, the rest of it is up to us because our brains are in control. You have to make the effort and constant choice on what to put in your body. I can still suck down a huge milkshake every day without issue, and so can my dearest friend that had bypass about 4 years ago. The big difference is, I choose to NOT do it, she does, and she's gained back 50 of her 150lb loss. -
Just Returned From Mexicali... And Still Smiling!
MissMinnie replied to SmilinGal's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Dr Aceves did my band to sleeve revision about a year ago. Glad you did so wonderfully. Like you I had very little pain and couldn't believe it was so uneventful. I don't mind flying but was really surprised that it was only 3 days after surgery and I felt no pain on the flight and it was from San Diego to FL with a 3 hour layover in Dallas. Good Luck on your journey. -
1-2 lbs consistently?
chinamama replied to shannon crotts's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Me too. Up down plateau! Went to the surgeon and she said i was 3 lbs down from last month. I told her I get frustrated when I see everyone passing me by at double or more, and she said long after they stop losing ill still be doing my 1 lb a week!! I also think being a band revision has something to do with my amt of weight loss. I didn't suddenly go from eating 4 cups of food per meal to 1/2 a cup, so in essence by 6 mos honeymoon was up years ago. oh well her goes another pound! -
GPS Update: Important new information
Tiffykins replied to DrWatkins's topic in Gastric Plication Surgery Forum
I just want to address the bolded statement. I had a leak 2 days post my revision. I also had horrible anesthesia complications during the repair, landed on life support for 4-5 days and my prognosis was grave at best. I had an extensive 3.5 month long recovery with an additional hospitalization for abscesses, was on TPN with a central pic line for over 2 weeks with nothing by mouth for over 20 days after the leak repair. My husband was deployed, and not allowed to come home during all of this even as I lay in ICU with a 10% chance of survival. I can assure you that my recovery was pure hell, but not once did I think "oh crap what have I done!". To this very day, I have absolutely ZERO regrets nor am I anything short of 100% certain that I made the right choice with VSG. I never once doubted that I made the "right" choice with VSG, and today, I'm even more certain that I made the best decision. I've said it many times here that I would endure every struggle and obstacle in my recovery to live the life I have today. I just thought I would throw out my experience to give a different perspective on complications with any surgery. -

Revision From VSG to RNY September 28
manitobamama posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
So I am a week out of surgery. First couple of days it felt like I did 10 000 sit ups. Today it feels like only doing 500. Got my walking down, sipping my liquids but need to sip a lot more to meet my goal. I know it doesn't happen overnight. I start each day with a Boost Diabetic Protein drink. Nice to see there is an app for this. Hope I get to know others here. Cheers manitobamama -
March 2022 Surgery Buddies
kcuster83 replied to LilaNicole20's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
From what I understand there are 2 main reasons. 1. If you have a large amount of weight to loose, they will start with the sleeve and when you max out the potential weight loose they can do a revision to bypass and you kind of "start over" and loose a lot more weight than if you just had the sleeve. 2. Acid reflux/GERD. Apparently it is VERY common to end up with it from the sleeve surgery and sometimes it becomes unmanageable which in turn can cause serious damage so they so a revision to bypass to stop the GERD. I am only speaking from, what I have read and what my surgeon explained to me. I have SEVERE GERD so the sleeve was not even an option for me. I am on 2 medications already, and eat tums constantly and have damage to my esophagus already. I need it resolved before I end up with major problems. -
March 2022 Surgery Buddies
UniqueHandle replied to LilaNicole20's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my surgery on March 22; I've lost 102 pounds. My starting weight at home was 308.6 and my weight this morning was 206.4. However, my rheumatologist has my highest weight at 314.8, so according to him, I've lost 108 pounds. Whatever the loss, it's great. I still see a heavy person when I look in the mirror, but my clothes were a 4x and now I can wear a large. I had the sleeve and I've had terrible reflux. So bad, I have inhaled it into my lungs while I sleep several times. My doctor wants to do a revision after the holidays. π -
Advice Please From Folks With Leaks!
happytohavethesleeve replied to SylviaMom's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I didn't know anyone made a list! I am on it too. Twice actually. I had a twisted stricture. Same sort of treatment as a leak. Happylife. I was most unable to work for months. I dont know the total cost of treatment. Would be scared to even guess. The facility that did my surgery covered the costs. God bless them. I went from Aug 10/2011 to Dec 24/2011 without eating and at times keeping down only some liquids. Long periods no liquids either. I had 8 dilations, 4 operations, 2 feeding tubes through my noes, stent placement, and than removal from migration. Than I had a unheard of fix. Called Stictureplasty. After the Sleeve healed for a long period of time they cut the twisted stricture out and put the two parts of the sleeve back together. And crossed fingers for no leak. It worked! The reason I mention this to you is they told me if the scar tissue from the twisted stricture was soft chances would be better for no leak. As it is difficult to have scared tissue mend. Another thing is they gave me a J tube. It was a feeding tube that went directly into my tummy so that I didn't have to eat or drink while the revision surgery healed. I would do it all over believe it or not. I love my sleeve so much. For you it is a personal decision that only you can make. I wish you the best and happiness! -
Lapband, VSG, Now RNY Bypass the sequel
catwoman7 replied to Sincerely.blj's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I have a virgin RNY, not a revision, but I had almost no pain with this surgery. Part of me wondered at first if he actually even did the surgery... most people getting a revision do get an immediate relief from GERD (not all - but most), and additional weight loss is around 20 lbs, but I'm sure that depends on your BMI and how hard you work at losing weight. I'm sure you can find people who've lost more than that. -

Trying for sleeve, might get band, need advice
genepha replied to megajen's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Janie, You may want to post on the lapband board as well. I, like Tiffykins have a band. I had a lot of success with my band for the first 7 years but have had many, many problems with it in the last 2 years. A negative for sure with the band is the amount of aftercare required. I've had probably 20 fills and unfills in just the past 2 years alone. For each 1 I have to see my dr., pay a co-pay and I've even had to take a few days off of work. I am looking to revise to a gastric plication or sleeve gastrectomy. I haven't quite decided which surgery is best for me. You need to find a surgery that u feel most comfortable with and one that will help you be successful. Good luck! These boards are great at offering support and advice. Unfortunately not all of them are! -
Approvals with BCBS Federal
Faytona replied to rln52's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm a lapband revision. BCBS Fed approved my lapband in 2/2011, port replacement in 3/2013, and lapband removal 11/2013. I just got approved to have the sleeve (surgery scheduled for March 14!!). However, I did have to go through the 3 month supervised diet, psych eval, and all pre-op tests again. I just got my surgery date!! March 14. . Any news, NewLife? Illinois Plans Under Medicaid Covering WLS
Dana Collins replied to bb1008's topic in Insurance & Financing
Hi bb1008, just reading your question. I recently just switch my Medicaid health plan to meridian after researching coverage as well. However, I'm a 11yr. Vet of the gastric bypass, I'm presently seeking a revision to possibly the ds switch. At that time 11yrs ago I had bcbs ppo, I was still denied several times and I did more than my share of stipulations until they finally got an approval. I've been practically asking the same question of coverage (rearranging the words) till finally I run into a statement that says meridian is covered once in a lifetime with exceptions of fixing complications, but does not cover members with prior bariatric surgeries. I've been having the 8-10th year complication/ failure issues that I'm seeking help for, my situation makes me a prime candidate for revision. Hoping that my team can get what I need done to qualify. Because once your surgery is done no one wants to touch you cuz they don't know the (gps) of your abdomen, smh. Let me know how the meridian experience turned out for you, my pre opt consult for revision is Fridayπ€π£πππ€π€π€π€π -
Quick question for all the veterans out there. I had a revision surgery from Lapband to VSG on December 15th. I have lost 12 pounds since my surgery date. I seem to stay the same weight for 3 or 4 days at a time and then drop a couple of pounds. I've been on liquids now for almost three weeks. I can start mushy foods in two days. I would think with the very limited calories I am consuming that the weight would be falling off. Any thoughts?
-
I agree 100%. I'd contact them right now - today! With all the unbandings due to erosions/slips, Id be scared to do this all over again. :tired (rebanding for any reason) Have thought any about a revision to another WLS? Im gonna be praying for you. Remember, we're all on this road together.
