Healthy_life2 replied to NurseMichael's topic in Fitness & Exercise
about me: HW-254 CW-133 Weightlifting competitions are out for me. I’m keeping it real at age 50. I will never see abs under my mid-section/loose skin. I am more than happy to have this fitness level. I hope to keep it going as long as possible. My goal is to be a bad ass 70-year-old. -
Yes I agree I lost about 90lbs in 2012 99% of that on exercise bike. Yes I got to a good weight but I was just skin and bones no muscle definition or tone at all. I now know this time with surgery and weight loss to include some form of weights machines..

Finally managing to get enough calories in to see some gains 😂😂 most days I'm around 1200 calories sometimes up to 1500....I have a lot of discomfort eating more than about half a cup of food, so basically eat all day! I cant keep protein shakes down so that sucks (my surgeon mentioned dilating my sleeve...ahhh no chance lol). I'm 9 months out from vsg and 34.5kg lighter. Would like to lose another 3-5kg of fat then focus on gaining more muscle (fill out my spare skin with some!). My bench is up to 50kg (used to be 70kg) and deadlift at 90kg (was 120kg+) so is a slow road, am also nearly 47 years old so that not helping 😄😄 have added in Olly lifting for fun, and managed to box jump 75cm (30 inches) which felt great (did 40 reps just cause so happy I could but wow my calves on fire the next day lol). So this year my goal is to bench more than I weigh, and squat and deadlift 1.5 x my weight. I'm stuck on a 45kg clean and jerk but I think that is all mental cause I know I can lift more than that. Anyway, love reading your posts, hi from New Zealand 😀 -
Hi- I got my CPAP about two weeks after my sleep study. Getting used to it IS a bit of a process. I found that wearing it while watching tv (without trying to sleep) helped me get used to the feeling of having it on and breathing through it. That way you are not lying there at night with the pressure of feeling like you HAVE to sleep with a new strange set up. Also, don't be afraid to try lots of different styles of masks, there are a ton of them and one is bound to feel most comfortable for you. My provider allowed me to return any mask I tried as long as it was under 30 days to exchange for a new one. Many online retailers are also this way, check around. Also, it sounds counter intuitive. but avoid over tightening the mask on your face. It should not be loose, but over tightening makes it both uncomfortable to wear and actually MORE prone to air leaking. Hard to explain, but true. I know you are frustrated by this hurdle (which is totally understandable!), but try to see the good in this too. Sleep apnea really IS a serious health issue. It doesn't matter if you feel "fine" when you sleep without treatment or not. Damage IS being done. You have now discovered the problem and you have a chance to adresss it not only before your surgery, but during your weightloss journey. I guarantee you NOTHING will make losing weight harder (surgery or not) than the lack of real healthy sleep that untreated sleep apnea causes. The connection between poor sleep and obesity is well documented. All surgeons are different in what they require as far as compliance with using your CPAP. Mine required a 30 day printout from my sleep doctor to show at least a 4 hour usage every night. Again, I know it is frustrating and overwhelming. (((Hugs))) Tell yourself you are going to follow this part of your journey to give yourself the very best shot at health- and when you get to that surgery day you will know you are prepared and ready to give it your all. I will be rooting for you!!! 💙

Where did these wrinkles suddenly come from??!!!!!
notmyname replied to KarenLR75's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My face has gotten wrinklier. BUT - I found that it goes in phases. One day I looked in the mirror an saw MASSIVE turkey wattle neck. Like serious lose skin there. About a month later, it was gone. It takes my skin some time to catch up to the weight loss - so I might see more wrinkles one month and fewer the next. I have no idea if any of this helps, but I was my face an neck day and night using a Clairisonic brush. In the AM, I then use a lifting serum, then SPF moisturizer. At night, I use a tone repair serum, then a night moisturizer (all stuff you can get at the drugstore. So far, I do have some more wrinkles, but nothing that anyone (other than me) would notice. -
Where did these wrinkles suddenly come from??!!!!!

OK, I was on day 13 of my pre-op diet when surgeon and I realized that since medical records were delayed in getting to them..and based on him having some time off and me having some days that would not work based on my job, that my surgery date was sliding back towards end of July. So, I get a 'double helping' of pre-op dieting. Pre-op diet based on new date started yesterday so by the time it is all said and done I will have done pre-op 'dieting' for...33+ days! LOL. I realize the pre-op diet is much like what initial post-op diet will be. I was looking in mirror the other night and freaked out as my forehead decided to suddenly have new lines out of nowhere! I just stood there staring and wondering what the heck happened!! Then the only thing that comes to mind that would explain an almost..what felt like 'overnight' appearance of these new wrinkles..that I had lost an additional 12 lbs in my 13 days (I didn't weigh on last 2 days of pre-op diet). It dawned on me....that it seems I am losing the 'slight padding' I had under my forehead maybe? I know before pre-op diet, I had 1 faint line across forehead. I actually shuddered inside as I know that if this is what happens based on pre-op diet...then within the next 6 months...they only thing I may see on my face is a BUNCH of wrinkles. I think I will look like a Shar Pai. Am at the age where my skin does not have the padding, etc. that estrogen helps to provide. ANOTHER reason I wished I had made this decision a decade ago - better to do when your skin retains some chance of more 'elasticity'. My elastic is 'gone'..LOL I went running to my 'lotions and potions' and have at least ensured my face is hydrated (also drinking tons of water anyways) and moisturized..and protected from the sun. It did help with some of the deeper 'crevices' that suddenly could be seen. I know this sounds so vain....but my best friend always used to fuss at me...even before I was morbidly obese that I 'never had wrinkles'. Before I knew that 'my excess weight was the reason that as I aged..that the wrinkles were not showing up....they were 'buried' under fat. Sigh...this and the hair loss are 2 things that I know will continue to occur (I already have been going thru hair thinning issues..and I am not expecting to be one of the lucky ones who do not experience more hair loss with WLS. Can do hair pieces, wigs, etc. for hair....but no wigs for my ongoing 'wrinkly face'...lol. Anyone else be...prepared for wrinkles to show up...but were astonished by how rapidly and/or how many? -
Post op day 3. Last night was not good. Constant full feeling is keeping me from drinking anything which I believe made me spike a fever. Call into doctors office to see what I can do. I took some miralax and that did help me go, but it’s all loose and I never feel less full. It’s super painful how tight my stomach is from the distention

February 2019 weight loss buds
Frustr8 replied to TheMarine79's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Bought hair-skin- nail formula from Wal-Mart. Has it worked? Don't know but WM got a little richer, oh well I haven't had any bad effects beside a sourish stomach pouch so I take a small amount of something food-wise . -
Check with your Dr's office. I needed to get fluids 2x and I was able to do it outpatient. There Is a test you can do on the back of your hand. If the skin doesn't retract easily when pulling it, you may be dehydrated. It gets better with time. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

Seems some folks didn't take spelling in school. I read a lot of posts and comments incorrectly using "loose" in place of "lose". No way I believe it's a keyboard auto correct issue every single time. It should be LOSE weight. And LOOSE skin. Thanks for listening.

I am 4.5 months out from RNY. Obviously most of us get loose skin from the rapid weight loss. I wanted to ask others how long it took for their skin to tighten up. I am assuming people still lose weight and still have loose skin and I know it varies a lot but would you say it was really loose and some tightened around 6 months? 8 months? at what point did your skin tightening max out-- a year? So far I am 50 lbs. down and it's not too bad but I am wondering if it will actually look better in a few months even thought I will probably lose another 20 lbs.

What did you do to loose weight after gaining weight years after you had the Bypass Surgery
Dorothy Sue Jastifer posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
This is for those who have had bypass surgery and have put on weight and have successfully lost weight again. I am wondering How did you do it and what was your successful plan -
I too finally am able to pass gas and I had a BM. I’ve never been so happy in my life. BM still loose, but I would assume it’s going to be that way for awhile. It was small too. As far as water and protein goes, once your belly isn’t distended anymore and you move some of it around, I’m sure protein and water will come easy. As far as your temp, I would wait it out. It’s not technically a fever yet as we can fluctuate up and down from 98.6. If you get low grade (100.1) and above which chills and such, I would call the doctor.

I can only answer for myself, but my arms look older than I really am because if the saggy skin. It’s the bad skinny fat look 😔. If my muscles were larger, I think it would greatly improve their appearance. Now I just have to do something about it, which is harder than whine about it 😂

2 days post-op, in LOTS of pain and need a pep talk
Sosewsue61 replied to Supersecret's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Keep sipping liquids, sugar fee popsicles, hydration is the total goal right now. Walk and walk some more it will help with getting the air out of the stomach cavity and relieve some pain. When laying down put a heating pad on your incisions it will feel good. Swallowing - warm decaf tea, or broth soothes the esophagus and relaxes the muscles in the stomach area. Yes - sleeping was difficult for a couple weeks. Rest as much as you can, move slowly when sitting up, then stand for 30 seconds before walking - blood pressure can drop after this surgery. Hold hand rail on steps, not kidding I nearly passed out - this can also be a sign of dehydration - it is next to impossible to catch up once you are in it. Pinch your wrist skin and make sure it contracts back nicely, if not push that liquid. Try to get protein drinks in, if shakes are gagging get some Isopure ready-made blue raspberry or punch. Or Syntax nectar. Some smells may make you nauseous and food may taste weird. I could not tolerate chocolate, got sick on sf pudding and even now it doesn't do much for me. This time seems to drag forever, but it gets better once you get to mushy stage. Welcome to the 'other side'! -
February 2019 weight loss buds
EmzBee replied to TheMarine79's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I signed up for the gym yesterday - comes with a free PT session, so I got that out of the way yesterday evening. Wore both an underwire bra and a sports bra over the top to keep the girls in order, but I've lost so much from around the chest that they planned a grand escape anyway *sigh*. All the loose skin really makes 'em difficult to tame! I'd love to get a breast reduction, but I'd have to pay out of pocket... and because I'm doing all this in the hopes of getting pregnant, it might make sense to save my pennies and hope to reduce when we've finished adding to our family. Lol. After a couple days of getting a few bites shy of half a cup of mince and riced cauliflower in at meals, my pouch is like 'nope!' and I've struggled to eat over a bite or two of anything over the past couple days. It's so draining to go from doing well to, like, crashing and burning! Back to liquidy foods -- milky coffees, protein shakes and yogurt -- for me, until my restriction starts to lift again. Doing my best to get fluids in... gotta keep the determination up because otherwise I'd just flop into bed and never get out again. Lol. Lovely to see so much activity in here and a few new faces! I swear, without you lot I'd feel completely on my own. No one I know has had surgery like this, so hearing about your journeys is an absolute anxiety buster for me 🙂 Oh, yeah -- and I haven't lost a darn thing over the past few days! Expecting a pretty stagnant week or two after so much movement in the past 2 weeks. Reeeally want to get under that 90kg/200Lbs mark, but life's just going to torture me for a little while. Heh XD -
LATINOS or ANYONE Familiar with Latin/Peruvian Culture & Food - HELP!!!
nenes78 replied to MarvelGirl25's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
1. Latinos or anyone strongly influenced by your culture: HOW did you cope with losing this part of you? You don't loose this part. It sits on the back burner for a bit. 2. What do you all do at family gatherings, parties, and on holidays while everyone is eating? Early on I would bring my own food to events. It is hard to see everyone eat while you are limited but the more you do it the easier it gets. I see people avoid the situations, but lets be realistic, you cannot hide this way for the rest of your days. learn to deal with it and move on. I like to sit with family and friends while we eat. I used to eat more , but now I talk more. 3. What do you eat? recipes are welcomed! I’ve been told to eat yogurt, chicken meatballs, canned Soup, and all kinds of food I'm not use to... Have you found a way to make your Latin food healthy? I stuck to my teams meal plan for the first 8 months and then started to make it my own. I focus on protein and veggies, many Latin foods are both. 4. Peruvians or Peruvian food lovers: Can you still eat things like ceviche, aji de gallina, lomo saltado, and anticucho, just minus the rice? Can your stomach handle the spice and seasonings? I am Guatemalan, with 2 best friends who are Peruvian. I can handle most spicy things again, (can no longer deal with straight habanaro anymore). By 10 months out I was fine eating spicy. As for the foods above all are easy except the anticucho and lomo saltado. Beef has been real hard for me unless its ground, but I know people who have no issue, and yes rice I can no longer handle, but to me that's a good thing. 👍 -
Stalled stalled stalled
giddygiddygiddy replied to bookworm88's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am just a month out from surgery, and am going through a stall. It has been so frustrating because I haven't lost any pounds in over a week, but I am definitely losing inches. Right after surgery, I was weighing myself everyday just due to excitement (bad habit...don't do it) and consistently losing at least two pounds a day. Once I hit my stall, it was quite discouraging to not see the scale change, but losing inches and having loose clothing has been helping me still feel good about this decision. -
Conversion to Gastric Bypass Outpatient?
_kimGA_ replied to _kimGA_'s topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I lost about 140 with my original sleeve back in 2013. I regained 60 pounds in addition to having bad reflux. The papers say I will loose about 80% of weight gain ... BUT those are just averages. I remember my original surgeon who did my sleeve told me I would probably only loose between 60-80lbs and I surpassed that (even though I gained some back. Besides the point point now )) Everyone is very different. I have weighed myself everyday since surgery. Surgery day post op (6/26) was 202. Today I weighed 184. I know some of that was the gas & saline my surgeon left AND the hydration IVs I received the day after surgery. I was too nervous to try and set a goal weight this time around because I’ve read some people don’t loose weight like they once did. I do want to be 130/40 but it will take a lot of work. I wish we had better statistics but my advice would to be to treat this as serious as your first surgery. Maybe even be more cautious! -

You look really great...and I don't see any waddly skin so yay for you! My brother asked me when/how the weight loss stops. I really have no idea! Thanks for explaining the epidural. I had only heard it used in childbirth. I've wanted steroid injections but as a Type 1 diabetic I understand it shoots the blood sugar sky high so I've never had one done. I can bet that reducing your breast size will help with your pain. -
Sugar begets Sugar...😁 But seriously sugar is additive You may need to find the complex carbohydrate alternatives that suit your lifestyle. This is early in the game but consider long-term lifestyle. Have you ever tried: Wheat berries, barley, bulgar in salads and soups, hummus, quinoa, falafel, beans, crispy broad bean snacks or pure puffed spelt/rice as cereal, homemade alternative (almond coconut quinoa spelt kamut) flours flatbreads, crispbreads, sprouted grain loaves, etc... Or if you really can't incorporate complex carbohydrates what about fats: pure nut butters, oils for cooking/dressings (I actually use that coconut oil for my hair/skin😂), avocado, etc... Hoping you find the balance 💜
