Weight Gain After Sleeve (Seeking Advice Not Judgment)
Healthy_life2 replied to GetBack_095's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Sorry to the original poster I'm off topic. Fluff , You know I love you. your edit sounds less aggressive😉 The last thing the OP was asking for or needs is judgment. They already know their reasons for the weight gain. No need for anyone to restate what they should have been doing, where they went wrong and beat them down further. The depression, shame and guilt from a gain is enough. I agree, Therapy and talking with their surgeon about options including revision is a great place to start. Lifelong change means they can get the help and move forward. In a perfect world all of us would stay on track. We will continue to see people with weight gain. I want them to feel supported and see them take this on and get the help they need. -
Weight Gain After Sleeve (Seeking Advice Not Judgment)

IDK. I think you are a fairly unique lady and VET. Maybe in the top 1-3% of people/"types". You DID learn your lessons while losing. You DID incorporate your doc/RD instructions and adapted them to work for you long term. And when you experience regain for any reason, you've set a protocol that is inspiring and amazing to watch. And it gives me hope for my future--that I'm not doomed to regain it all without being able to maintain. Because you quickly and efficiently go back to your roots and get rid of the regain. I feel like the OP has not done the work. Or maybe the surgery was the wrong surgery for him/her? We are all so unique, one solution won't fit all. They claim the reason for the regain and for not getting lower to their goal was based on undisciplined behavior. But if you lack discipline before, what will change this time? How will you magically change for good? Any of us can do things for short periods of time. But being "habilitated" sometimes, even more than being "RE-habilitated" is important. Not all of us can do that on our own. Not everyone learns things the first time. Maybe some of us DO need the surgeon revision or the RD new plan/accountability that meetings provide? Maybe we DO need bariatric therapy to discover what is driving us to self-harming behaviors? It usually isn't the short game that's the problem for any of us...it's playing for the long game. It is about changing lifelong behaviors for long term success. And that's a TALL order for most of us (the other 97%). Dunno...just spit balling here. -
Do all sleeves or baraitric surgeries need revisions?
nenes78 replied to Healthy_life2's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
In my support group we have a few members with both sleeve and bypass that are 5 years out plus. A particular member with a sleeve is 8 years out and has had no revision. He says he lost almost 150 pounds with the sleeve. and regained 30 pounds at one point but currently maintains at 15 from his lowest loss. He is an older gentleman and does say that age plays a factor as well as he noticed its tougher to loose weight now than a few years back. He also let us know when the weight puts back on is when he does not track his intake. When a newbie to the group asks if they will ever eat normal again he always tells them " Whats normal? Before surgery I would order a large pizza and eat it all in a sitting. Now I order a medium pizza, have a slice maybe two and save the rest for another meal. The before is not normal, the way I eat a slice now is." -
Do all sleeves or baraitric surgeries need revisions?
Healthy_life2 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Do all sleeves or bariatric surgeries need revisions? I’m seeing posts that some people think the sleeve stops working and will need a revision at some point. Where are people getting this information? Yes, some people may need surgery revision. It can happen with any type of surgery. This site is filled with new people and people that have gained weight. People that are maintaining have no need for support here. I’m wondering if this is the reason people think surgeries will “need revisions” That we are all doomed to regain. Understand some may need a revision for various reason: examples: (I’m sure there are more reasons than what I have listed) Complications procedure not done correctly it was the wrong type of surgery for an individual. Many reasons why people gain weight. (Most People can control gains on their own, If the contiune to gain, they can consult their surgeon on options) Examples: Hormones medical conditions medications pregnancy/ menopause eating disorders stress Grazing – Eating a combination of heathy and unhealthy food over their calories and macros. The sensation is no restriction. Its as if you never had surgery and you will gain weight. Mistaking stretching as your restriction becomes less as you progress out from surgery (Your stomach is not back to full size) You still can fill it with food within your calories and macro’s Not knowing how many calories they are eating daily Will all surgeries stop working. NO. Will everyone gain weight - no. If you gain you can work it back down. Weigh yourself before a 20 pound gain continues on to a 40, 80, or 100+ weight gain. -

50 pound weight loss is " NOT A FALIURE!" Its fantastic. Don't compare your weight loss to others. Some of us lose slow and its perfectly fine. You are losing weight and that’s all that matters. Revision of the sleeve. Let your team diagnose if the procedure was done correctly or if your surgery was stretched by over consumption of food. What many people with the sleeve experience is "grazing ". Eating healthy and unhealthy food over their calories and macros - It is the same as never having surgery. You will gain weight. Weighing on a food scale and logging my food has been the best tool. It’s the only way I know my calories and if I am hitting 60 to 100 gram protein goal. Many free apps out there - I use myfitnesspal others use baritastic. -
Please help my surgery is Monday and I am still unsure which procedure is better for me. I have a failed lapband, BMI of 33.2, CW 189. I read the forums how sleeve patients usually regain after years and go back for revision. However is MGB to invasive for my weight loss. I don’t want to lose to much. Please help me decide. More heads and opinions are better than one :)

Are you considering a revision?

what's the worse things about bypass
KateBruin replied to BucksMum99's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I’m glad to hear all these stories. I had sleeve aug 2017 and developed severe GERD and gastroparesis so I’m looking at bypass revision. I already have “dumping” without really having it because I eat and instantly explode so that part doesn’t worry me. Poop your pants enough and the threat of pooping your pants more is an empty threat! No date yet. Waiting on insurance to approve it as medically necessary. -
I had my surgical consultation today for revision, but on the off chance that it is not deemed medically necessary for revision, I do qualify for bariatric surgery in general, repeating all of the requirements as if it were a new procedure. My question is regarding Cigna coverage. Most plans require a monitored 3, 6 or 12 month diet/nutrition/weight loss management through PCP or somewhere similar. Cigna's policy says NOTHING about this, only that "a statement from a physician other than the surgeon, that the individual has failed previous attempts to achieve and maintain weight loss by medical management" - it gives no other requirements or indicators. I called Cigna today to inquire and they couldn't tell me anything more about this. So, for those of you that have been approved in the past few months (Cigna's policy requirements look to be effective 10/9/18 through 7/15/19), what did you provide for this? I have to have a letter from my primary anyway that recommends bariatric surgery. Would this be the same letter or separate? And what did you submit/have your PCP write to say that you had failed previous attempts? Thanks in advance for your help!

My doctor actually was happy to hear I wanted the bypass and not the sleeve, and my BMI is 37. Every doctor is different. Mine, in particular, said the exact thing you did: he’s seen people needing a revision or going to the bypass down the road. And not that folks aren’t successful with the sleeve, because people can gain with bypass too. However, for my dr, it is less frequently seen. I’m sorry you had that experience! You need to be comfortable and welcomed by your dr and the office staff. It is probably better you find someone else, for your own piece of mind. I can’t imahine letting someone operate on me that I wasn’t totally grooving with

JUST GOT OFF THE PHONE TO A LOCAL SURGEONS OFFICE; THE RECEPTIONIST TELLS ME THE SURGEON PREFERS ONLY TO DO VSG AS FIRST CHOICE FOR VIRGIN BARIATRIC PATIENTS MY BMI IS NOT HIGH ENOUGH NEED TO PUT ON WEIGHT... WTF never been told before I'm not heavy enough.... My BMI is 43 but oh we've seen 50-60 bmi like seriously she was so rude said the surgeons first choice is VSG.... And that's basically it.. Really turned me off with her tone and attitude, I was looking there because they are better prices but forget it I'll pay extra for better SURGEONS and so I rang my 2nd choice and the reception was much nicer said the surgeon will listen to your decision and will talk about pros and cons but it will be your decision mostly as long as nothing serious comes up of course. I rather pay a little extra for a surgeon and hospital that is much more known and has more reviews I just thought I'd give the smaller place a chance but no thanks... QUALITY OVER QUANTITY! Still months out but getting closer everyday.. I don't want to get the bloody VSG and then have complications and have to be revised to RNY later on like most people, I only want one operation thank you!

Is there anything you wish you'd been told pre-op?
chrissymcm08 replied to Pippa1703's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, the acid problem with the sleeve, guess I will be on Pantrozole/Omeprazile for the rest of my life unless I have a revision to bypass. Also have gallstones now so they want to take my gallbladder out. I am 10 months out. Sent from my LG-LS777 using BariatricPal mobile app -
Conversion from lapband to sleeve - lower BMI
NYC_PAULA replied to Stella84's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I had a band in 2010 it slipped in 2016 and I had horrible acid reflux and was slowly gaining weight. I had different insurance than I did when I first got the band and they wouldn't cover my original surgeon. I didn't love the bedside manner of the new surgeon they gave me. I went in for a repositioning but he said it was too twisted and decided to remove it instead. He told me that insurance wouldn't cover a revision surgery that day because my BMI was too low at the time and that I would probably gain weight and he could do another surgery at that time. I did gain weight but didn't want that surgeon operating on me again. Instead, I found a practice and surgeon I really like that my insurance covered. I had some damage to my esophagus from the acid reflux when the band had slipped so I was on medication for a few months before surgery. An endoscopy showed that the medicine had worked on clearing things up and I was able to get the sleeve a couple of months later. I am only a few weeks out but I'm feeling really great. I'm annoyed that I had to go through gaining weight again but couldn't afford to do this without insurance. I'm sorry this happened to you and I wish you the best of luck. I've found a few other former banders in the sleeve forum and that has helped me feel less alone on this journey. -
Sleeve -> MGB revision and a couple questions
Healthy_life2 replied to LivingLight's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Do you think you need a revision with a 17 pound gain? I don't think I understand your question "why or When the sleeve no longer works?" Some people may need revisions for various reasons. This does not mean all surgeries will need them. -
Sleeve -> MGB revision and a couple questions
ttnurse replied to LivingLight's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Can someone explain why or when the sleeve is no longer working ? I see on here folks get a revision from sleeve to mini gastric bypass. I got married 5 months ago and have gained 17 pounds .my goal weight was 150 .today I'm 168..thanks, teresa -
I had my band removed in 2010. My doctor offered to revise me to another surgery at the time I had the band removed. I can't remember exactly what my weight was, but I recall that my BMI showed "overweight", not obese at the time. I didn't revise with the lap band removal and I'm wishing I had taken that doctors advice. My weight stayed steady for a year or 2, maybe slowly creeping up 20lbs. In 2014, I had a major life-changing event occur and I gained ALL of my weight back over the course of 2 years! If I had a tool to keep me a little more in-line, I doubt it would have been as catastrophic as it was. Now, I'm struggling hard to get back to that place where I was when I had the lap band out. I'm close, but not quite there yet. Absolutely not! You do what you feel you need to do. If you need a tool to help you maintain, then take advantage of it. I can't answer your inquiry about whether MGB is too invasive. I considered it when I was planning my revision but ultimately went with the sleeve.

February 2019 weight loss buds
Everything replied to TheMarine79's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Yes- which is why I stopped beating myself up about not following mine exactly and revising it to fit my needs. How do these surgeons come up with the post op plans? Mine says I can drink alcohol 4 weeks post op; other people have to wait 6-12 months? Some are requiring 80 g of protein beginning immediately after surgery and others are 15 g for the first week? Some people are supposed to start with multivitamins day 1 post op and others wait 1-2 weeks to integrate them? Are these surgeries so radically different that the post op diets need to differ this much? I’m listening to my body and pushing to get max protein but I’m not going to beat myself up if I don’t get in 80 g of protein. Sorry. -
Surgery after RNY- no protein powder no vitamins???
animallover1247 replied to Sweettoothless's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had to go off my vitamins and calcium for six weeks (after vsg) and my levels always remained normal. I had to revise to bypass but haven't had to go off of them since bypass. -

I’m freshly home from the hospital after gastric bypass revision surgery (after a failed lap band). I feel pretty bad still though. Wondered if others had similar issues after: Diarrhea Nausea Impossible to sleep in a comfy position Groggy and in/out Trouble getting in the 4oz per hour Would love to hear your stories. Also, what did you take for nausea? I have the omeprazole for the acid and am taking Tylenol for pain. But the nausea is pretty bad, as in the diarrhea.

I just want to cry. Scratch that, i have cried. Today is 4 months since surgery (sort of, since I had surgery 10/29). I had a great first two months. Felt good, everything was going smoothly. Then the acid reflux started. A bit at first, then worse, even on 2 Nexium a day. OK, I could handle that. Then, about a month ago, the nausea started. I just can't deal with it. Seems to be getting worse every day. I feel worse now than I ever did before surgery. I can eat less now than when I started on solid foods. This is the first time I haven't been able to hit my protein goals since day 3 after surgery. I even have trouble getting in all of my liquids because I can't drink for forever after eating (maybe 1.5-2 hours). And I have to eat All.The.Time because I can eat so little at a time now. I'm doing my best, but the nurse is starting to worry they need to put in a PICC line to get fluids/nutrition in (luckily, she told me today she doesn't think that is necessary yet. Had an upper GI. They found a hernia, but saw no GERD. I got a hold of my doc's nurse. She'd talked to my doc. They don't really know what is causing it. She said they could do an endoscopy, but that he thinks he won't really find anything new. And he doesn't want to repair the hernia (again) until I lose more weight. Doc apparently wants to revise to bypass. But, for a number of reasons, I don't. Particularly since they don't really know what's wrong and can't tell me the bypass will help. I mean, I can barely eat now - and if bypass doesn't fix it I'll be even more malnourished than I am now. So, for now, he's prescribed a different reflux med, given me anti-nausea meds, and OK'ed me to lower my protein goals (protein supplements REALLY make me sick). my nurse keeps telling me that this isn't the rest of my life and they'll figure it out. But, I'm still worried and frustrated and sick as a dog. I'm not really looking for suggestions, or reasons I'm wrong not to want the bypass. My two close friends are having family emergencies and I don't want to burden them now. So I just need a space to let it out. Thanks. And really glad I have an appointment with my therapist on Tuesday.

Overstitch Procedure 3/20
Njrobyn replied to nickie2524's topic in Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty Forum
Hi i am scheduled for a revision of my RNY done in 2002 using the Overstitch procedure. It’s concerning that many people seem to lose their feeling of restriction fairly quickly, but I am willing to try. I have seen a few people who are happy with it.
