  1. I could not go forth with the operation if I did not have support of my husband. He is fully supportive of what I WANT. He's concerned about pain and complications and he's ok who I want to tell or not. His whole family are skinny minnies who have not dieted a day in their life. He has watched me struggle with weight for over 26 years. Since I had the babies. I told my daughter who supports my decision like no other. She has watched what I eat and exercise and do to get this weight off. She has gone shopping with me and sees the cute stuff size 16 and lower and the size 18, 20, 22, 24 etc all horrid styles materials and in PUCE. So she knows. I told my son. He is very supportive as well. He lives in another state so not sure if he told his wife. I may ask him one day. I told my very best friend. And my boss and her daughter, who works at company. that's is. I keep wanting to tell my sister but I don't think she will react well. And my husband's family is out of the question. Someone said here that if anyone comes right out and asks them, they will not lie. And that's what I'm going to use for myself. Pretty bad that you can have diabetes, heart disease etc and want to do something about it, but people have opinions. I KNOW...I was one of those with my own mother. Because I pushed myself with diet and exercise all the time and she didn't, I wasn't supportive when she wanted WLS years ago. Course she was denied because she had way too many co-morbidities. She passed at age 74 a few years ago. A small stroke and 6 months later a killing one. I fear becoming my mother now. Spending last 20 years of my life only partially living due to my condition like she did. So...I have the guilt of not being informed and therefore not being supportive 10 years ago. I would expect that most people who have not studied and read and talked to surgeons and nurses etc etc about WLS are as ill informed as I was. And I agree with another poster here, I do not want to be the talk of my husband's skinny family. NONE of them work and gossip all day long and I would be #1 conversation. NOPE.

    Concerned

Following!!! I'm 10 years with band nothing but complications. Scheduled for RNY 10/13.

Anything implantable is opening the door to all kinds of issues complications and infections. Theres a reason that the lap band is going instinct, and this looks eerily similar to one
  4. I'm feeling much better. I'm 16 days post op and I feel a lot better. I'm trying to work out my gauge. I can't tell the difference between fullness and if a food is just disagreeing with me. It all just feels like a stomach ache. I haven't been eating regular-regular foods, but I have at the same time. Technically I'm on phase 2 also known as the pureed food diet. I haven't been pureeing food. I've just been trying to chew really well. I prefer them to be wet, because dryer foods don't go down well. I did have some complications about 6 days post op. It was a small bowel obstruction caused by swelling. It did not feel good. I had to stay in the hospital for 4 days. To be safe I decided to stay with my sister for 2 weeks due to my lack of energy and light headedness. Just an update on what was going on after my surgery. Laters.

  5. I had bypass completed on the 6th. I'm averaging about 700 calories a day. I got the clear last Wednesday to ease into regular food. I increased my carbs to around 50 yesterday and today and that has helped with my energy a lot! Actually walked a mile this morning. I was told to eat till your full and stop. So that's what I'm doing. I think our body's are still in shock from the changes and it is going to take a little while for everything to start moving faster. Make sure your getting your protein to help heal faster. I'm down 18 lbs but I had a complication early on with a pretty high fever and litterally had no food for a week!! So I lost 10 lbs the hard way there. Hang in there and maybe talk to your nutritionist. Sent from my Nexus 6 using BariatricPal mobile app
  6. Megan - it will get better. I am sorry you feel excluded by your friend. I think you should actually ask her after the outing why she excluded you though..... She might actually feel that she is sparing you from frustration by not asking you to attend. Friends are really complicated and be aware that a lot of friendships tank once YOU start changing the 'game'. But you will get more social and have so many new life experiences once you let the new you out. Warning: there are transference addictions and alcohol can be one of them - most docs say don't even try any alcohol for a year after surgery and it takes less to get wasted quicker. Is there a support group for wls patients at your hospital/clinic? If not maybe you could ask to start one, it's sonetimes so good to see other people experiencing the journey and share solutions. Dream big girl!!!! Go buy a top 2 sizes smaller that's on sale and hang it where you can see it, if you get the urge to stuff your feelings - then go 'pet' it and tell yourself you want to fit into this instead of eat. Tell your brother to sod off!!! Lol

    Lap Band vs Sleeve

I initially wanted the band because it's reversible and seems less scary than having part of my stomach removed. However, my surgeon talked me out of it. He said he barely does a handful a year and that he spends lots of time doing band revisions and removals. Apparently, a lot of people have had to change from the band to the sleeve. There are a lot of complications like band slippage. With the sleeve, you also don't have to get adjustments or worry about as many follow up appointments. Also, it can restrict your ability to eat healthy foods like raw vegetables and chicken, but then things like ice cream slide very easily down. For me, the main thing that freaked me out was having this foreign object in my body. I read on the internet about people who can see or feel their port through their skin and I didn't like the idea. I think you should talk to your surgeon and do as much research as possible. My surgeon did say that for someone with a lot of weight to lose, the sleeve is better. However, if you don't have much weight to lose then maybe the band could be for you (or you might consider the laparoscopic balloon or another alternative).

    Struggling - Update

Oh Tammy, you have been on a rough road!! So sorry for your pain and complications. I hope you are on your way to healing now, be careful and keep us posted.
  9. I am having gastric sleeve done Oct. 3rd. Previously had band, so many complications, leaking, tube breakage, tubing enstrngking bowel, on and on. Band was removed with open surgery vs. Laparoscopic and sleeve the same. I hav many many adhesions! Any experience with open surgery? Thanks

    Sleeve vs rny

Im still in the early stages so i will talk to my surgeon again for sure. I never noticed how often the reflux occured till i started researching these surgeries. Sometimes i think id rather deal with bad acid reflux then worse health complications associated with rny. Ive also read rny is better for high bmi...mine is 52... 11. I think it largely depends on whether you have complications or not, but without complications I could have returned to work after my sleeve-RYN conversion after five days. I was very tired at that point, but my pain was mostly under control with the exception of gas pain which I experienced rather intensely from around days 5-12. I would recommend walking as much as possible (you probably know that) but if it makes you feel better I felt like my recovery from bypass was a breeze compared to the sleeve. It's all individual, but I hope things go smoothly for you!

What have you learned on your journey

Weight loss is a very complicated thing. Scientists are still trying to figure it out. I have read that genetics, environment, gut microbes, bile acids and hormones all play a roll in how we gain/loose weight. And how insulin (even for non diabetics) can be controlled to help with weight loss. How grains, even whole grains can affect our weight and that they are not necessary. I have learned that tastes really can and do change over time and that you can truly enjoy a low carb high nutrient diet. I have learned to read labels and choose foods with fewer, simple ingredients. I have learned that even the most stubborn person can be positively influenced by seeing the results of someone who has lost a lot of weight and enjoys better health. I have learned some of the little tricks the food industry uses to try to make people think their products are healthy when they are not. Prime example is the low fat label that has lots of added sugar. I know how addictive sugar is and am thankful to be off the sugar rollercoaster. The more I learn, the better my choices because I understand the why of it more. What things have you learned that may help someone who is starting this journey. September Sleevers

    Expect the unexpected lol

Everyone's experience is different. The anesthesia put me in a lot of pain and nausea. I also ended up spending hours in recovery because my blood pressure went crazy high. My family was told I would be in my hospital room after about 2 hours and they ended up waiting about 10 hours so they were freaking out. The first 4 or 5 days my body was in shock and I was alternating between feverish sweating and violently shivering. My oxygen was low so I had to wear a mask and my mouth was so so dry. That was worse than anything. And then two weeks after surgery, my body had this weird autoimmune sarcoidosis thing so I had to go and spend another week in a hospital. I've been on prednisone for two weeks which is not something you want to try and lose weight on! But then I jump on these forums and see other people sail through the surgery with no complications. So, it's hard to prepare! But I would just go in with a good attitude.
  15. Hi all, I've been on BariatricPal for a few years now, on and off. Came back looking for advice or similar stories. I had my VSG done on 7/6/17. I am currently 5w5d pregnant, I was pregnant up until 15 weeks last year and then miscarried (that was my second). My first appointment with my OB was yesterday and she referred me to a MFM for my care between the recent surgery and the 2 miscarriages she is afraid to take me on without supervision of a high risk specialist. Anyone else have a pregnancy so soon after WLS? Did you have any major complications? any advice? how was your eating during pregnancy? This was UNPLANNED and UNEXPECTED, but nonetheless we are excited and praying all goes well. I don't think hubby and I could handle another loss

    Pregnant pot op

Everything she said ^^^^. Follow your doc's orders during a pregnancy and always remember, it's all about the baby. Due to other complications during my pregnancy (had before surgery) , I gained 15 lbs only following every order given. Doc reminded me all the time, "it's not about you, but the health of your baby" remember this and congrats on your success thus far and baby to be soon.

    any New Hampshire newbies?

Good to know. I'll make sure to pay attention to my levels. I just had my preop surgeon appt today and I am following the ERAS protocol. It's Expedited Recovery After Surgery so I will only need to stay one night barring any complications. I'm pretty happy about that. I'll start clear liquids the day of surgery...small sips. Then released the next day.

I used Dr. Quinones at Pompeii surgical in Tiajuana. I had a great experience. I had no complications and have lost 83 lbs since January.

    Let's all vent!

Yeah, I've heard that the recovery and complications are very minimal regarding the sleeve. [emoji4]

    Let's all vent!

Im a mom so the complications of surgery always scared me. Thats why i opted for the sleeve..bc it has very little complications. I put it off for long enough and came to a realization that i cant loose all this weight on my own. Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app
  21. Ladies you'll be fine!!! Don't worry. I've had no complications I followed the rules. One year out I still get full off of 3 or 4 bites
  22. Garveydanielle : Mini gastric bypass is similar to roux en y bypass, where the stomach size is reduced; however, the intestinal bypass itself differs in that it only has one anastomosis vs 2 two. The studies show the results are similar to traditional rny, but with fewer surgical complications and faster recovery. It's still considered a newer surgery and not all docs are doing them yet.
  23. Surgery was 9/5 so I'm 2 weeks out. I've lost exactly 20lbs since surgery (sleeve, hiatal hernia repair, and cholecystectomy). I actually feel pretty normal. Haven't had any complications or issues thus far, no reflux, my liquids are going down easy and my incisions are fully healed. Still have some pain moving around with the larger incision, but that's all. Definitely wasn't mentally prepared for how much I would miss food though lol. Not even craving junk, I just want some grapes or a turkey sandwich. I've gone through some regret but I just remind myself that it's worth it. I'm on my phase 2 liquids right now with one more week before I can move onto phase 3 purees. And then another 2 weeks on that before I can have soft foods. It seems like every doctor follows a different guide. Sucks, but just gotta power through it. Im excited for my puree phase to begin! Sent from my SM-G930T using BariatricPal mobile app
  24. I have been very fortunate to have had no complications and a fairly easy recovery. It's impossible to predict though! i had a two day hospital stay, and I was up walking laps around the hospital wing within a few hours. (Although, most of those two days, I was sleeping.). I did go back to work yesterday, which was day 6, but I have a desk job and I only work 6 hours a day. I was exhausted by mid-day, so it probably wouldn't have hurt to take more time off. I didn't want to tell anyone at work about the surgery though, so I just sucked it up and dealt with the exhaustion.

    Vomiting with medications

Please check with a pharmacist before pulling capsules apart. Not all can be pulled apart without complications such as extended or controlled release pills. This can cause dangerous complications with some meds, such as blood pressure pills (Just one example). Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app
