Does everyone need PS?
Jachut replied to travelinsnorkel's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
Yeah its that need/want thing. Almost everyone who has lost a lot of weight could definitely use some contouring, its a matter of if they want it or not. And a good proportion of people really do need it to look, well, normal for want of a better word. I dont mean that as in they look disgusting without it, I mean they have an obvious figure problem as a result of stretched skin. I dont know what the actual stats would be, but its perfectly possible to lose a large amount of weight and look fantastic dressed (or artfully draped) and look OK enough on the beach to not make everyone sick. My stomach looks nice and flat in that avatar, and it looks flat when I'm standing up too. But believe me, on the beach there are certain positions I avoid. I would never lean over on hands and knees to grab my Water bottle, lol. My stomach hangs like a deflated balloon when I do that. And I dont spend a lot of time sitting, bent in the middle either. -
Are you joining a gym? Many gyms will give you a few free personal training sessions, they can help you to set up a exercise program thats right for you. As far as weight limitation I don't know, but you can def. hurt yourself if you do not know what you are doing.

HI my name is Kara I am a 34 yr old mother of 2. I currently weigh 225 lbs and have weighed 175 or better since I was 12 yrs old. I have been trying most of the year to make a healthier change in my life for my kids. I quit smoking in May after 17 yrs and I really want to get this weight off. I am trying to figure out if this is what I want to do. I am a little worried about loosing it too fast and having skin hanging off everywhere. I am afraid I will go through depression boughts like I do about my weight. When I say depression I mean, I don't want anything to do with anyone, I am down on myself, I am unhappy, and quiet and I just want to sit around all day. Luckily I have 2 boys so I can't really just sit around. Well I can some. I guess I am afraid it will get worse or that I will needt to go on medication for it. I don't like pills. Other than that I am not really worried right now. I do need someone to help me with finding the right info and answers. I want to be smart going into the possibility of doing this. I am meeting with my Primary care Physician Fri and will be bringing it up with him then. I don't really know what I need to know at this point, I just know I could use some help. By the way I am in Watkinsville, GA:biggrin:

Kara, you are in the same place many of us have been in at one time. I would suggest seeing your primary care as planned and then researching as much as you can about lap band surgery and what is required after surgery. It is a great "tool" for weight loss, but it does require a lot of commitment. I am similar to you in that my highest weight was 260 and the lowest weight that I can remember since high school is 140. I even went on a strict diet and exercise program, went to school to become a fitness technician, and worked as a personal trainer for 4 years and was still only able to get down to 178. I kept at that weight for a year but then got pregnant with two more kids and ballooned back up to 260. That was when I decided to get the lap band surgery. I had been researching it off and on over the previous year and a half and was afraid to take such a drastic approach but I literally had tried everything else. I had surgery June 9, 2008 and so three months later, I have lost 35 pounds. I have been successful with the lap band so far, but I have tried to follow the Dr's orders as close as possible because that is what I have read and heard makes a huge difference in your success. I am sure if you decide to go ahead with surgery, with the right support, commitment, dedication, and determination, you will be very successful. Good luck!

I don't even know if I can remember them all..these definately aren't in any specific order: Diet workshop (Several times) Nutrasystem Weight Watchers (several times) Jenny Craig (life time member...yea that helped UGH) Woman works (local place) New You (local place) Protein shake place (forget the name but drank their suppliments all protein based fruit juice type stuff. Local place) Herbal Life Atkins Susan Summers South Beach Slim Fast Dexatrim Metabolife High Index something or other (expensive pills didn't work) Gloria Stevens (gym and diet thing) 10 day diet (thats the one with the beets, tuna, vanilla ice cream BLECK) Cabbage soup diet banana, skim milk diet Richard Simmons deal-a-meal Fit for Life Hollywood diet (drink stuff for 3 days, the bathroom and me were best friends YUCK) Nutrionists diet from the hospital The just cut back carbs diet from my doc Hypnotism (yea get this...we were told while under anything in excess was garbage. So more than 1/2 a sandwich the other half was garbage. While under....he said..Pigs eat garbage, dogs eat garbage. Wellllll that didn't work for long either bar-oink!) Green Tea tablets I can bet I'll think of more after I click "post" lol

I have done sooooooo many diets: - over the counter meds (mostly a caffeine high causing heart palpitations) - phentermine (took a dose and landed in the ER with a severely low blood pressure and super high heart rate... flushed those suckers) - weight watchers (balanced & healthy program but I am not one to count points for the rest of my life and group meetings tend to bore me) - nutrasystem (no the food is not better in my opinion... high is salt and meat dishes are fatty) - LA weight loss (this one REQUIRES you to eat 2 of their candy bars a day... to the tune of @ 320-350 calories. Like I need to waste cals on candy????) - Atkins (you better have good kidney function to tolerate this killer diet) So many diets, so little success. My best success came from doing my own healthy eating plan... lost over 200 pounds but old habits resurfaced. I was banded before I regained it all... kept 90 pounds off.

Title says it all people, I'm thrilled with the results so far!! I'm in my 6th week post op, no pre op diet, and down 25 pounds. I am now officially 1/4 of the way there, at 206 pounds. Come on onederland!!! Theres still a long way to go, I know. But I havent been this slim since I was 4 months pregnant, and that was 2.5 years ago!! When I was pregnant, I told myself, I dont have to lose the weight I wanted to lose before I got pregnant. My dieting stopped for the good of my baby, I was eating for 2 now. But actually, thats a big fat lie. Healthy eating would have been good for my baby. 30 mins on the treadmill would have been good for my baby. NOT doing those things was bad. I should have kept watching what I ate, so that I didnt go from 180 to 230 pounds, and I dont even remember WHEN I dissappeared into the 200's. When I get the chance to be pregnant again, I wont use it as an excuse to eat whatever I want and slob on the couch.

Hi, My name is Kim and I just had lap band 4 weeks ago. I have lost 30 lbs since beginning the pre op diet on May 31st. I went to the dr. for my 2 week follow up. He said I was doing great. I was concerned because the week I started on puree I was starving all of the time and I could eat at least a cup of food and still be hungry. He said that the swelling is going down around the band and that makes the band looser. He said to eat until satisfied and he will fill me at 4 weeks (which is this Wednesday) I feel like I am getting out of control already because I am always hungry. My weight has been up and down a couple of lbs every day since. Is this a common occurance? I feel like it is really discouraging. I feel like I don't even have the band in. Any comments would be helpful. Thanks in advance, Kim:ohmy::confused2::tt2:

Hellooo, newbie here.
videonasty replied to videonasty's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Yeah, it's my first time having surgery. And yeah, I've recently also been making lifestyle changes and exercising. I just figure I need a tool that will help keep me from relapsing and help me lose more weight as I have a long way to go (113 pounds!) Other than anesthesia, my other big concern is excess skin. I really hope I don't have issues with elasticity and excess tummy skin since I'm planning on losing so much weight. -

I'm having my surgery done with True Results in Houston, TX, so I'll be with my family for a bit post-op. Otherwise I study/live in Chicago. I have been a bit apprehensive. You read soooo many negative posts with people who didn't lose weight because they didn't take it seriously. But I'm pretty darn determined to make this work in the long run and stick to what my doctor tells me what to do and exercise my bum off when I get the OK. I'm also kinda afraid of anesthesia, haha. But all in all, I am excited and looking forward to change. What about you? -
Have you mentioned this to your doctor? I mean are you in close communication with him? What does he say. I gained 2-3 lbs after starting soft foods too and have now finally after about 2-3 weeks taken that off. I'd call him and see what they say! Cheer up. Im sure it will work!

ppl SHOULD be supportive of our weight loss and not jealous, and it is hurtful to feel shunned. One of my co-workers said YOU DON'T NEED TO LOSE ANYMORE BECAUSE YOU DONT WANT TO LOOK SICK. Well, I still have weight to lose and I'm determined not to give up. Thanks for all of the encouragement and support.

I really don't understand what is with everybody's friends! My best friends are totally opposite, one is skinny as hell and always has been, and the other is a bigger girl and always has been. Neither has given me any kind of jealousy signs or anything...in fact they both tell me how proud of me they are...esp. the bigger friend! Its really sad how these people are treating you for simply bettering your lives, and if I were you I'd be telling them whats up and if they didn't like it you'll find someone who does...because lets face it ladies and gentleman we don't need ppl like this in our lives right now...we need supportive people who actually care. Not get jealous cuz they look worse than you do now. I remember when my Mom lost all her weight, I was bigger than her! It kinda sucked but do you think I said gee mom I can't go out with you in public anymore cuz I'm fatter than you now. No! I dealt with it, and eventually took care of myself on my own time. I would never take that new exciting feeling away from her...because really that's what these people are doing..trying to break you down and make you cave and be unhappy again. Don't let them do it to you.

Hello, I was banded in '09. Although I'm struggling now to get back on track, I remember what was said in my pre-op support meetings. They wanted to make sure that this is what you really want to do because people will treat you differently once you lose weight. I said I'm sure of what I wanted and needed to do,and that my family and friends would be happy and support me. Now I'm beginning to wonder. I still have weight to lose But I can feel a rift from my co-workers and bowling friends. At work, they're not talking as much and I catch them staring. At my bowling league, they do the same. The females walk by without speaking as they use to and they are no longer inviting me to go on tournaments out of town the way we used to. I can't think of a single thing that I may have done. I'm feeling a little abandoned and lonely at times, but I still have at least 20 more lbs to lose. What will happen then?

Decisions And Scared About The Lap Band
DELETE THIS ACCOUNT! replied to berniev7108's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Ultimately the choice has to be yours and yours alone. You know what's best for you, so stick to your guns and do what you know is right regardless of what anyone else thinks. This is one of those few times in your life where it's all about you, your needs, and your health. The best advice I can give you is to do your homework thoroughly. There are risks with the band but there are with the other WLS too. I can tell you that while you might read a lot of negativity about the band and supposed band failure, you need to keep in mind the majority of those complications are a direct result of the person making bad decisions and causing the problems themselves. This is why educating yourself to the facts before surgery is so crucial not only to your weight loss success but to your overall health. Best wishes to you on whatever you decide! -
I agree. It has been pretty quiet. Maybe everyone is vacationing and having fun? I was banded on May 20, 2008, and had my first fill a month later on June 27 (2 cc was added to my 10 cc band). I have lost 26 pounds! I went to my internist last week and we are experimenting with removing my blood pressure medication for three weeks because my blood pressure has dropped so much since I have lost 26 pounds. This was one of my first goal with my lapband surgery - to eliminate blood pressure medication and I'm doing it! I have also gone from a size 22 to a size 18. In fact, I bought a size 14-16 skirt yesterday. I don't recall EVER being this size. I think I skipped it on the way up. Although, I must admit I am a bit discouraged about not losing any weight since my first fill (its been almost a month). I have stayed at the same weight (261) despite eating the same things and exercising even more. I really thought the fill would help with more restriction but it hasn't. In fact, I have less restriction but I do feel full most of the time and my cravings have been eliminated.

Nervous that I will not get off meds or even reduce them I was banded in April partly in hopes of getting off my type 2 diabetes meds before having to go on insulin. I had about 50 pounds to lose. Unfortunately, my blood sugar levels are just a little bit less that before my surgery and I have lost 36 pounds so far. I am still running around 200 or more. I don't want to get on insulin. I joined the Y and am starting to exercise. My doctor told me that when I hit around the 50 pound mark is when I will see a change in my glucose readings...although I have read that many saw that change immediately at the time of surgery. I am a little nervous that this surgery and loss of weight will not affect my blood sugar and that I will be one of the few who did not get that benefit. Anyone out there that this has happened to?:tongue_smilie::cursing:

I had lap band approx. 2 1/2 years ago. All went well at first. I lost approx. 20 lbs. Then my weight stalled. I started to gain weight. I have had 2 fills. I'm hungry frequently...I find that I "graze". I know what I can eat and cannot. My surgeon & staff give "bad vibes" if you have gained any weight.... to the point that I just stopped going. My general doctor says..."lap band doesn't work for everyone"... I assume meaning me. I thought the band would help with hunger feelings... which after a couple years does not. I would very much like to turn this around but don't know how. I discovered after my last fill (approx. 1 year ago) that heartburn was a frequent problem for several weeks....but eventually did stop. I need to loose at least 60 pounds and it seems impossible. I have gained back most of what I lost.

Feeling hungry a lot of the time 5 days after operation. Could my stoma/pouch size be too big?
SoccerMomma73 replied to pdaz's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Time grasshopper, time. You just had major surgery, nerves and parts and stuff are not necessarily working, I was at least a month out before I could start registering a full sensation, still don't get it all the time. Plus you're on liquids, the just pretty much roll through.....if you start questioning this already you are going to drive yourself crazy!!!!! Drink like you're supposed to, don't do anything to endanger your new tummy, it will come! HW 312, pre-op (lap-band) 294, pre-op (RNY) 255, surgery date 2/11/13, goal weight 154, current weight 225 -

C ongratulations on your 70 pound loss, that is fantastic!!! I see that you said you are on the road all day:car:, the best answer is to plan, plan, plan and then plan some more. Pack your Breakfast and lunch and Snacks in a cooler and keep it with you. Invest in a Thermos brand container to keep something hot if that is what you pack like a Soup or scrambled eggs. Don't become a victim of not staying in charge!!! You are in control!!!!! Some choices from fast food would be: Subway salad with turkey or chicken and lots of veggies Wendy's Chicken (no bun) with a side salad Applebee's pick from their Weight Watcher menu I use Calorie Counter, Diet Tracking, Food Journal, Nutrition Facts at The Daily Plate to look up restaurant information before I go so I can plan ahead. Hope this helps...Good luck to you!! Keep up the good work!!

Since Obesity is such a growing health concern, it has been stated that with obesity weight loss surgery, we may be eligible for a tax write off. I'm also wondering if the purchase of fitness equipment falls into that same category? Anyone work for the IRS or is an accountant that may know the answer to this question?

Hi, I'm Stacy. I have had two lapband surgery. The first one was 12/06 and the band was too small and I was very sick so my surgeon took out the band and replaced it with a large band in March of 2009. I really haven't lost much weight. I recently started exercising again but I have been eating all the wrong foods so I still am not losing. I am on here, just to claim my seat and learn from those who have had success with the band.
