shakes are awful surgery may 28

Every Dr does something different, but I haven't heard of one that won't recommend RTD shakes. Did they give you a reason? I don't do powders at all and never do anything put the Premier brand of RTDs. IMO Bariatric Advantage isn't one of the better brands, so you might want to think about switching to nectar or really any other one. Go to GNC or Vitamin Shoppe and see if they have samples. You can also get unflavored Protein from unjury (Google it). Isopure comes in bottles and has flavors other than chocolate and vanilla and can be mixed with Powerade zero. In the mean time, when making your shake, put the powder in the cup, put about 1/4 the liquid in it and stir really hard to make a paste. Then add the rest of your liquid. You can also try adding some dry milk powder to it as well. What ever you do don't stop trying. /
  2. Premier Protein. You can find it in the internet and the web site will tell you where you can find it. 30 grams of protein, low carb, low sugars and about 160 cal. I am very picky. I hate the protein shots and the the stuff they put me on pre op was horrible. The Premier Protein shakes have been he best, but I've not tried the Muscle Milk.

    I have a few questions..

Hi, bacon-- My revision was February 17, and I spent three days in the hospital. Challenges getting in fluids and extreme grogginess extended my hospital stay by one day. Throughout my recovery, I've had, and continue to have, difficulty getting in fluids and foods. Two weeks ago, I had a scope that revealed a stricture, which was inhibiting my ability to keep down Protein shakes and Water let alone anything pureed. It was cleared, but I continue to throw up and experience inconsistencies with even the softest of foods. My recovery is harrowing from my perspective, but I was able to return to work after three weeks, one week sooner than I'd planned. I was banded in 2009 and lost 40 pounds. Since the revision in February, I've lost 30. I'm also off of two of my blood pressure medications and taking half of the antidepressants I used to, results I never achieved with the band. In spite of this, however, I have regrets. The constant vomiting and feeling of fullness in my esophagus is like still having a band. I have a lot of anxiety around eating and have all but stopped doing it. I also have unpredictable stomach pains and explosive bowel movements. In summary, if I had the revision to do over again, I don't know that I would. Good luck with your decision!
  4. I made the most amazing dinner for my family tonight, grabbed my protein shake and went into my bedroom to eat it. Most days I'm good. Today I was a bit resentful. The full liquid phase is pretty tough. We work to get the surgery, we have these dreams of how amazing it will be, and then we go home to the reality. The reality is losing weight is hard and it requires self denial. Until we accept that we must deny ourselves no weight will come off even with a tiny tummy. You've started a process that requires an "all in" attitude to work. So have I. And some days it's hard but most days I'm in it so succeed. When you get the notion to go off plan use distraction to change your thinking. I visualize how I see myself in a year, or I head to Hulu and watch Hungry For Change or the Perfect Human Diet to motivate me. You can do this. We all can. Take care
  5. im using already made Isopure. 0carbs, 40g Protein in alpine punch flavor. its the after taste that kills me. i cant drink chocolates & vanillas. those things just make me gag!!!!!!!!! these drinks are KILLERS!
  6. Congrats, that's awesome! You're on foods already? I'll still be on clear liquids & protein drinks at 2 weeks...

What Am I Doing Wrong? Or Is This Normal?

are you eating more calories than you burn off?? this is how people gain actual/true weight.. if you are losing (inches)...aka clothes getting big, then you are losing no matter what the scale says or doesnt say..dont live by what the scale says....follow your eating advisement (protein, veggies, fruit) (or liquids vis post op).. and stop worrying about the scale...losing true weight is a process over time, the same as we gained it...... stop thinking what you think you are doing wrong but think about what you are doing RIGHT.
  10. I was banded in december, I initially lost 56 pounds all together during this process. I get such small fills each time I see a dr. I only get a .3 fill, I'm getting one tomorrow. I'm only up to 3 cc's in my 10 cc band. I feel frustrated that the process is so slow, I feel almost no restriction except in the morning. By the end of the day I cant seem to feel satisfied unless I overeat. I have been exercising more than ever, Im walking a 2mile trail 3 times a week. I am hungry all the time. I know that part of it is that I havn't been as good with dieting. But the Protein shakes do not fill me up and I am hungry right after drinking one. I have depression and it gets so bad sometimes that I break down and eat the things that are easy like ice cream or chips. I KNOW I SHOULDNT EAT THEM! I cant seem to stop myself. I end up hating myself and lose the motivation even more after I cheat because I feel like "whats the point?" What are your suggestions? is there like a support group I can go to? Am i the only one who feels like I am failing? The worse part is the feeling when I have gone into the Dr's the last 2 times and have not lost weight and I feel like shit
  11. Some days are harder than others but you can get through this... Look how far you have come…you have had a great weight loss and stalls/plateaus whatever you want to call them are going to happen at times…especially when you arent making the best food choices. I know for myself, in the past, when I hit a bump in the dieting road I would have gained weight back….you said you have at least held your own…that is an accomplishment all by itself. Would the pre-WLS you gained weight in a situation like that? As for making poor food choices, I understand. I had surgery in september and some days I get a little complacent…lets see how far I can "push" things. Noone is perfect…each day begins anew for a reason. Just take one day at a time and do not beat yourself up for the past. It is over with and cannot be changed but you can focus on the here and now and make the best decisions you can. As for the Protein shakes…I know my nutritionist says to get rid of those, I know many people use them, I do not. I eat all solid foods and it hold me so much longer. If you are exercising that much more maybe you need to up your protein a little more…could that be why your hunger is worse. It sounds like you are still trying to find the green zone…..I hear it takes time…and patience. You can do it. Look how far you have come…I always say to myself…"go ahead and go back to old ways….see where that will get you….how happy will you be then?". I hung a before and after pic on the kitchen refrigerator and in the bathroom….sometimes I just need to see it and remind myself how far I've truly come. Hope that helps you in some way…keep us posted…good luck!
  12. Thanks you guys! It is good to hear from you guys, I am making it my goal as of today to not keep any slider foods in my house... my problem is that I am not feeling any restriction except in the morning, that is why this is hard for me. I have my appt today for another fill and I am going to talk to them and see what I can do. I guess I just dont feel the weight loss yet because I was at such a high number when i started. what are some high protein foods you guys suggest that keep you full?

    Cannot find green :( HELP!

If you are getting a fill then an un fill my guess is you are too tight. I personally searched for the first two years to find the Green Zone. What is the Green Zone? After doing the same thing you have done I found there really is no green zone. I was looking for a zone that when my band was tightened it did the work for me. I soon found through trial and error that is not the way this band works. I finally had to stop with the fill and un fill thing. I had my band totally un filled for 9 months due to having issues with allergies my band would get tight and I would fill pressure in my head a chest to the point I could hardly function. A total un fill for 9 months(my choice) came with a 20 pound gain. I then started over and had a slight fill that is when I learned the band will help but the work was up to me. I had to watch every thing I put in my mouth. Carbs calories etc. I have never had it filled back to the point I was at. Its a lot of work to manage my head hunger verses really being hungry. Something I was missing when I really didn't understand how the band worked. How many CC do you have in your band? what size band do you have? if your band is to tight you will not be able to eat healthy and you will have no weight loss. Once you can eat Protein and feel full you will start having more success. I was banded in January 2009. I have lost 93 lbs had some ups and downs. if you need any help or have questions feel free to email me jodilegerski@aol.com
  15. I am just past 3 months out. My clinic's diet plan is one of the most restrictive I have seen on this site. I will tell the key to feeling well is Protein, Water and Vitamins. Make sure that you are getting all of your vitamins EVERY day. Do your best to get at least 60 ounces water a day and 50 grams of protein. You will work up to more. The water and protein is a GOAL. Don't beat yourself up if you don't make it every day. REMEMBER TO EAT PROTEIN FIRST! The sandwich might have gone down OK, but you need that space in your pouch for protein. Even now I only have one tablespoon of fruit, veggie, or starch with any meal. At three weeks 1 ounce of lunch meat was a meal. I still have not had more than a small bite of bread. You obviously have worked hard to have the surgery, and made it through. Call your clinic for help if you need it. You are just beginning this journey. I can tell you after three months that I have not felt as well as I do today in years!! RNY 6/25/13. HW 331; SW 292; CW 228; GW 150

    Does Anyone Know?

I've never seen samples at the Vitamin Shoppe where I live. However, with some of the Protein powder mixes, they may sell a single serve size, so you don't have to commit to an entire canister. The woman at the one I go to has given me a few freebies to try. But only the powders......nothing ready made.
  17. i wondered to myself if i would have surgery if they gave me those options. lol. i think id tell them to bill my mom or something lol
  18. So I'm getting 500-700 calories a day, 10 days out of surgery. I'm following the plan to the letter: meeting my water goals, getting 80-90g of protein each day... I guess I'm just wondering why is this appearing to be so easy? WTH?
  19. I am a 20 year old female (going to be 21 soon) and am weighing the options of doing surgery while I'm under my parent's insurance. I'm 5'4, 310 pounds (BMI of like 54) I am still in college and would plan on doing the surgery either this winter or next summer. I graduate next spring so I would have the summer to repair from the surgery until the fall when I'd start a potential job. If i didn't get the surgery within the next two years, I might have to wait like 10 or more to build up my insurance at my new job. I am working on my degree in Elementary Education. As of now, I work at a daycare and in direct care, both physically tolling jobs for an obese person. I am asked constantly from both jobs why I'm so big and if I'm pregnant. Parents sometimes look down on me as not physically capable or not being a role model for their children, which of course I want to be. I want to be able to sit in a chair and not worry about it breaking. I want to be able to lay down and not have my neck fat squished up against my chin. I want to be able to be comfortable with myself emotionally and physically. I want to buy clothes at Target and other cheaper stores that carry cute clothes without having to hide out in the plus size section. I want to be healthy and not worry about the possibility of diabetes, heart attacks, or aches/hurts in my joints. Something, though, scares me about the surgery. I'm not sure if it's the surgery itself or the thought of not eating my favorite foods after. I know it's worth it and everything and that complications are a minimal risk but what if my sutures leak? Or the biggest fear, I end up stretching my stomach out??? Someone please help me out! Should I wait and figure myself out mentally or should I do the surgery and be healthier for my future career??

    Liquid diet starts today!

I am doing shakes only (broth and Popsicles okay, tea, etc.) and I actually think it's much easier for me to have food out of the equation. Nutritionist offered a plan with a sensible protein veg dinner but I opted for just shakes as it's easier for me at this point just to do liquids and not "diet" if that makes sense. I am on day four not hungry and working out a lot -- also doing some last outdoor work today before it snows.

    pre op diet!!

Mine will be 3 days of liquid pre op 4 unjury Protein shakes daily, use unflavored unjury with orange juice. No milk for me pre op. 16 oz of broth each day And sugar free Jello and popsickles. Plus Water and crystal light. I'm allowed 2 cups of coffee daily but they said try not to have the coffee unless my head aches too badly. I start this on Monday.
  22. A lot of the diarrhea is from the high protein diet. You could try mixing your protein powder with soy or almond milk.

    Excited!

Congratulations! There are two things that helped me stick to the liquid diet. 1. I stayed focused on my end goals which was to get healthy and I knew i needed to be strong. 2. I took one hour and one day at a time and tried not to think about how long i would be on strictly liquids. What i found was after day 2, I really did not care anymore and that made it easier to handle. Lastly, I would not have survived without good homemade chicken broth. You get so sick of the sweet taste of the Protein shakes that homemade, well seasoned chicken broth keep me going. I practically lived on it for those 2 weeks and the 3 weeks post op as well. Make it homemade though because that crap in a can tastes like dirty dishwater. Blech! Best of luck to you. Bypass was the best thing I ever did. Now i am about to have my second plastics surgery and I cannot beleive it has already been two years for me.
  24. How do people determine what their goals are as far as weight loss, and more importantly how do you stop loosing when you reach that goal??? I read this everyday here, and it makes me think about it...I just read a post from a women who has reached 150 and decided she will stop there, and she is only 5"5" tall.....and I asked myself "Why Stop There?" and HOW are you going to stop??? I have found, along with some of my peers who have had this surgery, that this is a permanent lifestyle change that lasts forever as long as the band is there being a constant.... and it is not a diet that I can turn on or off...my food intake has been drastically reduced, and to a large extent the types of foods I eat have also changed....why else would I have wanted surgery if not to correct the things that made me fat in the first place??? Over eating and bad food choices? Having said that, with this new life style I have found the weight will continue to come off until the body reaches what IT considers the correct, normal and natural weight.......reaches a point of equilibrium, balance....only way I could have stopped loosing at a weight at my determination would have been to get an un fill when I reached my goal...enabling me to eat more? Early on my Dr. laughed at me and said I will stop loosing when my body wants to stop loosing...and as long as I continue my Protein, etc, that will be my goal... I have reached that point...and according to BMI Charts, I am still 10 lbs over weight...according to Body Fat analysis, I an in the very low, Fit and Athletic range...a little below normal... So I wonder, when people reach the goals they have been striving for, how do you determine and stop at that point???
  25. I've been looking through the forum and have not found the answer to my question. HAs anyone expierenced losing too much weight from the VSG? I'm weighing between the band and the sleeve. With the band I feel I will have control over my weight loss, But with the VSG I'm scared I might not, even though it's probaly the best option for me. :confused1:
