I kept losing well into my second year too. At my lowest I was 48.2kgs (was only there for a couple of weeks but …) & then I fluctuated between 48.5-49.5kg (about 18.9 BMI). I did that for about a 11 months & have been at about 50.5kgs for almost a year. (Am 3yrs 7 months out.) My dietician gave me some tips to up my calories before I stabilised so I’m glad you’re seeing your’s. Initually my surgeon & his associate were a little concerned when they looked at just the number on the scales but then they realised I’m ‘pretty small really’ (their words). Which is true as I’m not tall & am more finely built. They were then fine with my weight. Give yourself a little time to get used to your new body & your weight to stabilise & settle. Body dysmorphia will still be giving you a distorted picture of yourself as you compare yourself to the size you were before. It takes time for your head to catch up with the new reality of your size. I still get the occasionally shock when I realise the slim woman in the mirror or reflected in a window is actually me. And yes, bounce back regain of 10+/- lbs is a real possibility. You’ll work out what are your magic maintenance numbers are @pintsizedmallrat & it may not be 1500 calories because we have different needs & different weights we‘re most comfortable at. I thought 60kg & a BMI of about 23 would be great for me. But my body set me at a lower weight & I’m very happy with it. I was only eating about 1300 calories to maintain at the lower weight & about 1400 for the slightly higher weight now (have to eat more protein due to an absorption issue). But I’m not overly active & am 57 so that’s plenty of calories for me to maintain my smaller frame too. (I eat three meals & three snacks a day so eat heaps.) Oh & I get the clothing thing. I’m a US size 2 & sometimes a 0. There are stores here in Australia that don’t go smaller than a size 4. And there are ones where if they go to a 2 I’ll need a 0. (Still have largish feet for my height - 37.5-38). I’m about the size I was when I was 12. And yes I fit into Aust size 12 chn’s shorts. (My mum bought a pair for my niece & wondered if they would fit so asked me to try them on.) -

I wonder if these portions depend on what type of surgery you've had? I had the gastric sleeve and am 6 months out. I can eat 3 Oz of protein in a sitting but not much else. -

I am worried I am starting to have this issue also; I have gotten so small that I literally shrank my way out of the smallest size my favorite jeans come in, and I don't want to lose anymore because I am starting to have trouble finding clothes that are small enough in the adults' section, especially in nicer brands that run larger (I am very short, but I wear between a size 0-2). Even if I eat "whatever I want", my cravings tend to be for fruits and veggies and I still come in below that magic maintenance number of 1500 calories (my "lose" number was 1000). I've decided to add an additional protein shake every day between breakfast and lunch; we'll see how it goes. I was always so afraid I was going to end up falling short of my goal or gaining a bunch of it back so this is a weird situation I've found myself in. -

I needed to up my calories for energy and as I can not eat more yet, my dietician advised drinking an extra pint of milk a day. Luckily I love milk. I make it into milkshake with fruit. My energy levels have soared since and in a month I have not had to sit and rest or eat some protein. -

im 5 inches shorter than you (and 4 yrs post op) and i would lose weight at 1400 calories a day. at two years post i had stomach volume constraints too (still do actually, but not as tight as it was at 2 yrs post) and, like you, got down to a BMI 20 (at about 1.5 yrs post) it took me a while, but i basically had to get over the mental roadblock of eating higher calorie foods. i physically couldn't put more food in, so i had to make sure that the food i did get in packed more calories per punch. it was hard at first, but then it became easy (too easy! lol). Avocados, olive oil, nuts, nut butters, fatty meats, cheese, butter, full-fat anything, are "good" foods that are high calorie and low volume. Personally i ate ALOT of chicharron (pork rinds) but its not a very nutritious choice. I ate alot of them cuz i was pretty carbophobic back then and they were zero carb and a ridiculous amount of calories for so little (plus a pretty good source of protein AND oh so delicious lol) But is really high in sodium so there's that. But i digress... Anyhoo, today im BMI 22 (well 21.8, but close enough haha) its good you have an appt with a dietitian. they can help you make some eating decisions to increase your cals. Good Luck! ❤️ P.S. personally, i wouldn't eschew the exercise altogether...exercise has much less effect on weight loss than calorie restriction does (unless of course you are doing athlete-level exercise), and it's excellent for body health and well-being. Not to mention an excellent stress reducer, sleep inducer, and all-around energy improver. AND it tones your body and muscles so you look great (if u are into that sort of thing lol) -
hi! im 4 years out too! (50 yrs old, female, 5'2", moderately active and weighed 119.2 this morning) i stopped basing my diet on macros a couple years ago, i mostly rely on calorie monitoring (i still track everything out of habit). Based on my data, i've been averaging about 60g protein a day, of course there are some days i have like 20 and other days when i have 150...but on average its about 60. I haven't noticed any significant relation to weight gain/loss with my protein intake. Nor any relation with fats or carbs for that matter. (carbs do seem to have an affect on my appearance, but that's another story). the only thing that affects my weight is number of calories consumed over time, and to a lesser degree, activity levels. so its been an ongoing tweaking process to balance the two. A couple years ago i was an exercise fiend, and was taking in 2500+ calories. Now i'm a 2-3 day a week casual exerciser and average about 1800. im sure if i didn't reduce my intake when my activity levels went down, i'd be 20-30 lbs heavier than i am today. For those keeping score, i've (so far) maintained below goal weight since i reached it at 7 mnths post op. FULL DISCLOSURE: i am in good health (as my most recent labs can attest), and i have no diagnosed medical issues that would affect my metabolism. @SpartanMaker summed up the science surrounding protein well enough that i dont need to add anything more, but i do want to highlight the point they raised about the fact that the body can only metabolize x amount of protein (the amount varies slightly from person to person), and that any excess protein will be stored for energy (i.e., fat if you dont use it up). So i wonder, did your team give you a scientific or medical reason as to why they object to your protein level intake? Also, did they offer an opinion as to how you would replace those protein calories to stay at 1500 over all? (more fat? more carbs?) While i would not recommend NOT listening to your team, i do advocate the asking of questions to get an understanding of the reasoning behind a recommendation so you can make an informed decision for yourself. The 2019 clinical guidelines from the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons (ASMBS), calls for bariatric surgery patients in active weight loss eat 1.2 g/kg of bodyweight. For those in maintenance, the range should be .8-1.2 g/kg. I don't know how much you weigh, but 135 g a day sounds like it might be a bit on the high side based on those recommendations? There is research that intake levels between 1.2-1.5 g/kg may maximally stimulate muscle protein synthesis, but there's not a lot a data to suggest rates over 1.5 g/kg are beneficial. Rates above that might be necessary in certain people such as if are a professional strength athlete or top tier fitness competitor trying to maximize muscle growth. Especially if you're just trying to lose some fat, you probably can't metabolize that much protein. I can tell you from experience that many trainers will push this recommendation up to 2 or even 2.2g/kg of lean mass, because they believe if some is good, more must be better. The reality is that your body can't store extra protein, so any above the minimal needed just gets converted to fat. My recommendation would be to follow the ASMBS guidelines for your weight. Unless your trainer has extensive experience working with bariatric surgery patients nutritional needs, I'm afraid their recommendation may be targeted more at a different population.

It depends a lot on where you’re at and your level of activity. Normal ranges for women are 50-60g per day, but there’s huge variation for muscle mass, activity, age, etc. The guidance for active people is 1.2 to 2.0 grams of carb per kilogram of body weight per day. I weigh 71 kilos, I’m a 51 year-old woman, and I’m very active (heavy training for strength and cardio performance), so my targets are 160g protein, 150 carbs (250g on big endurance days), and 80g fat per day. I am 8 years out from RNY and this has been very effective for me.

I was told by dietician to not worry on calories, protein and water. But trend to fat tg and carbs 15g when you did select something. Eating 1/3 cup meat and top to 1/2 cup with cooked veggies, once in a while a small piece of baked potato. Have lost 40# in 6 weeks from day of surgery. -
Hey everyone. I am 4 years out and struggling with the covid 20 and some additional weight gain on top of that. I am working with an online coach for exercise training and nutrition following a macro based diet. I have not lost any weight so I reached out to the team where I had my surgery and they commented that my macros are way to high for protein. They were happy my calories were in the 1500 range (135g protein/160g carb/ 45g fat) but concerned about the protein being so high (optimum is 60-80g). Anyone else follow macro based plans?

I ordered a bunch of Protein Shakes and Vitamins that will be here tomorrow. Unfortunately mine has not been the best of all possible experiences to date. My surgeon -- I really like him. Unfortunately, he has been in the process of splitting his practice with another surgeon, and he's also had some office turnover, so the brunt of scheduling all the labs and various medical clearance appointments...making sure my prescriptions have been dealt with...I feel like it's been a very D.I.Y. process, unfortunately. And subsequently I'm probably more afraid than I need to be.

Not sure if this is a stupid question, but do you guys usually wait to drink after eating cream soup or broth? I'm 11 days post op and like 2-3 days ago I ate/drank broth a bit too quickly and I felt nauseated. I've had a very good experience very little neausea and have been hitting my water and protein goals. TIA

I know of several people who've had their lapbands removed and had revisions. Sleeve and bypass are both good surgeries - bypass is the stronger of the two if you think you need that - plus it's the better option if you've had issues with reflux/GERD. I have a "virgin" bypass so I wasn't in the same situation, although I can tell you I've been very happy with my bypass and would make the same decision if I had to choose today. But you'll certainly find others who love their sleeve...

My stall hit at around 2.5 weeks and lasted around 12 days. Then boom 10 pounds gone over a week. I've slowed again now and understand it's just going to be a process. I'm not getting frustrated since I know I'm losing lots of inches, my clothes are all baggy and people have started noticing in my face especially. It's just going to take time and sticking to the new way of eating. My doctor has me on about 600-700 calories for now. 80g protein, 50g carbs (usually don't come close on carbs), and 50g fat along with my 64 oz fluid each day. I'm still working on getting in everything I need to in a day.

Dealing with others (especially family) who don’t fully get it can be challenging, frustrating & upsetting. They’re trying to be supportive but … I remember my mum saying in frustration she didn’t know what I ate anymore & didn’t know what to have in the house when I visited. Well I ate pretty much what she did & did all the cooking when I was there but she felt lost, confused & didn’t want to jeopardise my weight loss. Maybe this is where your Mum’s coming from. Have you tried sitting her down with your program & going through it with her or even attending one of your dietician appointments. Remind her no one diet works for everyone because how bodies have different require to to function effectively & well. Your program has been designed to support your recovery & healing from surgery, to introduce healthy, nutrient dense foods to benefit your weight loss & health, & can be modified to meet any specific needs you might have. Can’t hurt. While sugar free popsicles are allowed I wonder if eating 4, 5 or more are too many in a day. Yes, they have no added sugar but they have artificial sweeteners which continue to feed your desire/craving for sweet. Also many develop an intolerance to sweeteners (particularly the alcohol sugars - end in ‘ol’) & over consuming may increase your risk. Try reducing how many you have each day & swap in alternative fluids like protein waters, green or herbal teas, etc. Worth a chat with your dietician but it is your choice.

I think thermomixers could be an interesting addition to the kitchen & can see how you would be tempted. My sisters-in-law were early adopters & raved about them. One even upgraded to the newer model. But they haven’t used them in years. Like the bread maker, juicer, etc. they’ve been regulated to a cupboard. Lol! Lots of people seem to love their instapot & as @The Greater Fool suggested, it’s less expensive & maybe a better option (especially if you have a cupboard brimming with unused appliances like I do). But if someone is gifting it too go for it. Ha! PS - Many years ago I got a food processor for Christmas. Used it twice I think - cleaning was a pain - so into the cupboard it went. Dragged it out (& dusted it off) two years ago to make some hummus. First there was a burning smell then smoke. Unplugged it & tossed it outside. It ended up in the bin. No hummus that day. 😁

So I’m sure grateful to have my mom here to help me recover from my sleeve gastrectomy I had Monday the 5th. I’ve stuck strictly to the post op diet set by my surgery team. Today my mom comments on my consumption of sugar free popsicles to help meet my fluid goals. I had four throughout the day was going for my 5th when she commented. And she told me essentially she didn’t think I was taking the surgery seriously because of the “additional calories and carbs” in the sugar free bomb pops. I have fought to hit my protein goals and fluid numbs everyday other than these popsicles I’ve had water, broth, and protein shakes. Rinse and repeat. I just feel both extremely judged and unseen. Her mind jumping right to calorie and carbs (she also used the word keto earlier to describe my post op diet which is inaccurate) makes e feel like she hasn’t even tried to understand what I’m doing here beyond surface level. I’m so frustrated. I’m 4 days out from surgery and already getting this l. I’m feeling crushed.

Loosing teeth after gastric bypass and the easy way out?

I’m 7 yes post op and have had to have a few teeth pulled due to cavities. Although I’m religious about brushing and flossing. I think the surgery probably has a small bit to do with it but for me at least it’s genetic. I have since gotten a partial denture. Hair loss after WLS is not uncommon and as I found out in my follow up with my program today it is common to happen again if you’re not keeping up with your protein. My biggest piece of advice is to keep your follow up appointments that are recommended by your program. I didn’t and have struggled with the rollercoaster of losing and gaining I had before. Thankfully I’m back in the program though not necessarily for another surgery but to get things going in the right direction. Good luck to you!! -
I'm going on vacation for Christmas, and I will one month the day I fly. I bought a water bottle that is easier to carry around and has a time stamp. I will be taking some protein powder because I need at least one shake a day to meet the minimum requirement. I do not plan on drinking alcohol or anything aside from water or eating any carbs, so I will just eat whatever protein is being cooked where I visit and will snack on deli meat and cheese if needed. I would not lie, I do not care about the alcohol but some of the food that are customary during this time in my country will be missed, not because I really want them but more because it's a cultural thing.

how did surgery save you money?

I paid for my surgery, but knew I was investing in my health and it will make up for it. So far our grocery trip is lasting almost 3 weeks and if I wanted I can make it to the month, since I can't have produce/fruits yet, and 1lb of protein is good for 10 meals, so I'm freezing some portions and my husband is eating from the protein I make. My blood pressure med is back to 5mg so my prescription of 3 months is going to last 6, have not been out to eat since Oct and even then I had started to only eat half of my portion and taking the rest home. I stopped drinking few weeks before surgery so we no longer have 2 boxes of beer in the pantry, no unhealthy snacks, or bread that goes bad. On the other side, my self esteem is coming back awd with that the wanting to shop lol but I have some clothes that do not fit and are new that I will wear till I hit the 100s, will mainly need bottoms, but once goal weight is hit, all bets are off [emoji1787] Sent from my SM-G960U1 using BariatricPal mobile app -
What you may need to bring on vacation depends on your eating plan and how firmly you intend to stick to it. If you do protein drinks and intend to stick with them then you'll need to bring protein drinks. Obviously, anything you just must have that may not be available on vacation you need to bring. Or your can adjust by eating foods on the vacation that still allow you to achieve your protein and calorie goals. Or, you can just ****-it all because you're on vacation. Personally, I'm somewhere between the last two options on vacation, depending on the meal. My plan since puree has been easy to follow no matter where I am with no special potions, lotions, or concoctions. As for drinking, you have similar options. Be careful, though. At this point you're eating very little, so alcohol can hit harder. Many sleeve folks are also generally affected by alcohol faster and harder so be very careful. If you're going to drink do it in a safe place initially so you can get a handle on the new paradigm for you. Also, transfer addiction is a hazard, so again, be aware and careful. Again personally, I don't recall drinking until more than a year out, on vacation. I don't drink normally but ****-it all, I'm on vacation. Once people understand your vacation, goals, and plan, they can offer a ton of tips. The requirements for a backpacking trip would be different than a 5 star resort. Enjoy your vacation. Tek

I'm finally able to keep a little food down and the head cold part is easing up. This chest cold, tho. Lord have mercy. It's just settled right in. I weighed myself today and I lost 5 pounds in 5 days from being so sick. I could only hold down liquids and protein shakes. I'm all for losing weight, but not like that. As I slooowly integrate food back in my diet again, I'm sure I'll put those 5 pounds back on. But that's actually ok. I want to lose the right way. I still can't work out, but maybe things will start to turn around before long. I just want to feel better. I really miss working out. But I have an appt on Monday with my doctor. If my coughing and breathing don't get any better by then, I have to go get xrays of my chest and get put on a nebulizer, steroids, and whatever else. Again. So working out is definitely not in the cards for a while. Grrrr..... -
Fighting Depression and Mental Exhaustion

Hi guys, My name is Caitlyn, I’m going in into my fourth week post op from gastric sleeve surgery. I start advanced purée tomorrow but I’ve been struggling so hard with my depression and having mental breakdowns as well. I’m off from work for 8 weeks as I’m a RN, and being home alone is hard, I’m getting tired of drinking so many fluids, and even though I’m only taking in 1 protein shake a day, I get periods were I don’t want to drink anything at all. I’m somewhat regretting the surgery even though I’m seeing good results, any advice on how to fight this?- 6 replies
