  1. I’m one week from my surgery and all the sudden I’m freaking out! I don’t have a ton of foods that I love but ice cream is pretty awesome... will I ever be able to eat it again? What if the doctor is drunk? What if he nicks a artery? What is I die or have horrible complications? Or what if it doesn’t work? What if I gain it all back? Also... how come I’m all the sudden wanting to eat everything in sight?? Is this psychological?? I’m excited but so nervous. Can anyone relate?!
  2. Well, so I'm back to this arena. I had a Realize Lap-Band put in back in October 2009. Since then, I have lost a grand total of ... wait for it ... 0.0 lbs. Dialed up the band saline level to the max allowed, went through four bariatric doctors, one of whom tried to sell me on an MLM, and two left the industry or otherwise ghosted me. It's been ... a helluva ride and a helluva disappointment. I clearly did not do the research needed and chose the wrong procedure. I felt zero decrease in hunger with the band, and while it of course made me eat much slower, it did absolutely nothing to quell hunger. I have felt hungry pretty much 24/7 for the entirety of this damn thing. And no, I didn't lose weight and then slowly gain it back, except for a bit on the first month post-op. My nine year weight history has been a flat line. I understand I'm at least a little bit unusual, but a) I'm probably not that unusual and b) it's the truth. So I'm back, on track for a VSG on 1/25, and doing self-pay as work insurance has a very strict, absolutely no exceptions allowed one time max on bariatric procedures. They are "graciously" paying for the band removal, subject to my $6k HDHP annual deductible. (Hence delaying until January - I'll hit my deductible for the year for anything that comes up post-op). Researched Mexico but decided to pay more to stay local - I'm a Virginian and Mexico is far. I might have felt differently if I lived in the Southwest or West Coast. Anyway. Has anyone else had a failed band - no complications, no leakage, just no weight loss - and then succeeded with VSG? I want to hear your stories! Brian

    Never Fear! Mentor Here!

I am sorry to be a Debbie downer, but could really use some cheering up. So I have apparently won the complications lottery! I have now had gale stones, stricture and ulcers. I only had my surgery 4 weeks ago! Omg, I am thinking what the hell have I done to myself? Is this going to go on forever? Plus, I am bake on full liquids!

Cost of wls across the south

I'm in NC, self pay. Everything including insurance for complications was $13,000. But my BMI was too low for insurance, my comorbidities we're all very high. So for us we felt it money well spent. I'm a week out Thursday.
  5. Hi, this is my first time posting here. Just looking for some support/advice. So I'm scheduled to have a gastric sleeve at the end of the month. My weight is 190lbs and I'm 5'3". I know I am at the lower bmi to be having the surgery but I fractured both of my hips last year (due to massive weight gain and low bone density) and am at a huge risk of fracturing them again if I do not get this weight off. I have tried everything, I can lose a stone but always put it back on and more. I stupidly told my family about getting the surgery done. My husband has been so supportive and understands why I need to get this done. However the rest of my family have been a disaster. They all think it is a case of just eating less and exercising more. I have tried to explain numerous times that I have tried everything and this is something I need to get done for my health. They are also worried about my dying or getting serious complications. I have said that it is not up for discussion anymore, that my decision has been made. This hasn't stopped them continually talking to me negatively about it. As soon as I am on my own (when my husband is not there) they come at me about it. Im finding it really hard emotionally to deal with this, and feel like I'm at such a low point now. Nobody seems to understand, no matter how hard I have tried to explain things. For me this is not about fitting into smaller clothes or looking good. I want my life back, I want to be able to do the things I used to do and not to be so depressed about my weight. Has anyone gone through this with their families that has some advice?

    Initial consult scheduled!!

Introduction to the team, weigh-in, some have a short video about the procedure, maybe meet with the NUT (nutritionist), maybe set all your appointments going forward, and answer your questions. Such as - how many surgeries has he/she performed, percentage of complications and most prevalent ones, what kind of staples, what kind of stitches/glue on the stomach incisions, etc
  7. I am looking for advice. I need a reversal. Ever since I had bypass I have had been in extreme pain. It's been three years of pain. I need to know what reversal really was like and complications.

Ok, I see. Well, I'm not really sure if they meant salami or something like chicken lunch meat. You should ask for clarification. Personally, I would think salami would be a bit hard to digest, and if it's spiced, eek! Lol. I was curious, so made up a list of fatty meats' protein/fat content (in 100g.. 3.5oz) Meat. Protein g./Fat g. Salami. 22/26 Hot dog. 10/26 chicken thigh with skin 24/8 Babyback ribs. 20/18. (Yes, salami has more fat than ribs!) Part skim mozzarrella. 24/16 Center slice ham. 20/13 Ribeye. 24/22 Bologna. 15/20 Some lowfat options: Chicken or turkey lunch meat: 17/2 Tuna 30/6 -------- Big picture/long term: It's not that fat is necessarily bad, but it does have a lot of calories. If we have high protein goals and like to eat fatty sources of protein, then we may find it difficult to meet our calorie goals. If you go on a ketogenic diet, then to a point, the more fat, the better. But even then, there is the question of healthy fats/vs. unhealthy fats. (A lot of authors believe processed meats.. aka salami, hot dogs, bologna... to contain unhealthy fats). So, it's a complicated issue, to be sure, but one worth investigating. After all, what comes naturally to us may possibly be wrong, since its what got us into this mess in the first place Ask your team what exactly they meant by coldcut. And if they ARE talking about these processed meats, it may just be temporary until you can eat solids.

    Any bedside nurses here?

Please...3 months is rabid overkill, especially for a sleeve, band, or bypass. These are simple, minimally-invasive laporascopic surgeries. My sleeve was a same-day procedure: I was operated on in the morning and sent home that night. Those with no complications and sedentary jobs often return to work in 1 week. Those with complications, slower healing, and/or laborious jobs usually return to work in 2 to 4 weeks. But 3 months (12 whopping weeks)? The bariatric coordinator who said that is living in La La Land among the ivory towers and unicorns who fart rainbows.

Abdominal Pain - 13 years post op

You should get checked out by your doc. In the meantime, if the pain becomes severe, go to the ER, since it could be a bowel obstruction or hernia. Recently there was a bypass patient that had to get surgery for a Petersen's defect. It is a fairly rare complication of the bypass, and it can happen anytime postop (even 13 years). Hopefully it's nothing, just some constipation, but better safe than sorry...
  12. I had my RNY over 13 years ago and have been blessed with not a single post op problem or complication less gall bladder removal one year post op. For the last 48 hours I have had constant abdominal pain in the umbilicus area. It doesn't get worse or less after eating. Pepto (my friend for years [emoji5]) and Alka Seltzer are no help. I feel (and look) bloated. I thought it was a stomach bug but feel that this is different. Any ideas from anyone out there?
  13. My doctor won't do the revision without 6 months in between. He said there's too much scarring and chance for complications. Mine was removed Feb 2017 And my sleeve surgery is scheduled for Nov 1.
  14. My doctor doesn't want me snacking - just 3 meals a day. I am 10 days post op and currently on full liquids. To get all my protein in every day, I have to add protein powder to Oikos Triple Zero yogurt and SF pudding (allowed in this stage in my program) + a significantly watered down Premier Protein Clear drink (which I can barely tolerate). I have tried unflavored protein powder in soups, but I can't eat enough soup (less than 1/3 of a cup for 7 grams of protein) to get to what I need in protein for a meal. I gag on every protein shake I have tried. I have tried...I am just not a shake girl! Later this week, I am moving to the pureed stage. I am planner + I can't wait to get "eat" something different so I have started to think through this... Is it possible to get my required protein in without continuing to eat yogurt/pudding + protein powder and Premier Clear? I am anticipating I would get fuller, faster and couldn't eat enough to get the amount of protein I need per meal to get 60 grams of protein. In other words...I am trying to get out of having protein powder during the pureed stage and meet my protein goals in the pureed stage but I am not seeing a way out of it. One other complication in the pureed stage is that I hate eggs. Am I over thinking this? I know everyone is different, but I am also curious as to how much (ounces, bites, tablespoons, etc), you could eat for a meal in the pureed stage. I would be grateful for any info or guidance y'all could give...

    My RNY journey

Hey, I was kind of reluctant to share my story but, I think it’ll be good for me. I’m 2 weeks and 5 Days post-op. I had Roux-en-Y gastric bypass on 9-19-17. I spent two nights in the hospital. When decided to have gastric bypass surgery I was 331 lbs. The day of surgery I was 311 lbs. I am currently 297. Surgery actually went fine and there were no complications. I was in pain but that’s normal right after surgery. When I came home, again I was in pain but I was given hydrocodone for relief. As the pain started to go away I was able to do more. I was walking fine, getting out of the house, just simply getting back to my normal routine. Eating was a little difficult at first but transitioning into the different stages got easier to deal with. Of course, everyone is different but the earlier stages is where you find out what foods you can eat with no problem and what foods you can’t keep down. This past week, my pain began to increase where my main incision site is. I can’t lay in bed, get out of bed, tie my shoe laces, or pick anything up off the floor. The hydrocodone had finished so my dr suggested I take a liquid form of over the counter pain reliever ( which worked for 30 minutes at a time). I called my Dr once again because the pain had gotten so bad. He had prescribed me tramadol. Currently I’m taking tramadol and I’m pretty much still in pain. My 1-month post-op appointment is on the 18th with my surgeon and I’m hoping the pain subsides by then. How long has your pain lasted? How many of you get emotionally overwhelmed by the pain? -Christine D-
  16. I followed mine to the letter as well. I didn't want any complications and I wanted to get rid of the weight once and for all.

    Sleeve pain left side

Ugh! I woke up today with the exact same feeling! It's like I have a constant stitch under my rib cage/gut area on the left. It helps if I apply pressure but crikey it hurts! I'm thinking it might be a few things (since I also have no gallbladder and it's located on the right side). 1. A leak - I'm 4 days out and I caved and made a scrambled egg last night which I chewed on like there was no tomorrow but I also added a tiny amount of Parmesan to get some flavour. Have I over done it and dropped a staple? 2 - gas - is it just a pocket of stuck gas from sleeping overnight? 3 - adhesions....surely they wouldn't have formed so quickly already, but also a possibility If it doesn't ease by tomorrow I'll be calling the surgeons office for some advice. Aside from this pinching pain I actually feel fabulous. My port sites are fine, I've been tolerating my liquids (and the cheeky egg!) no vomiting, nothing that would suggest I have any complication. I even went out yesterday and clocked my 10k steps. Super frustrating! I don't have time for complications! Haha!

    BMI 60+

My surgery isnt yet booked in but they are recommending in December or janiary. Before considering wls I had never been to hospital (as a patient) or even had my bloods done. So im freaking out a little [emoji85] Ive been told the bigger you are the more risk that is involved, I have already lost 5 stone but my BMI is still 61.5 or there abouts (High I know). Wondering if there is anyone with a BMI 60+ that has had complications other than what is considered normal post-op side effects. In my head if I know more about the complications and the likelihood of them, I can better prepare my self for any eventuality. Thanks [emoji4] Sent from my SM-G930F using BariatricPal mobile app

    10 days after LBL

Glad you had no complications! After my TT/Abdominoplasty I went from a 00/0 to a size 4 for several months. It's just swelling, be patient and wear compression garments. The longer you wear compression the better the final result. Once I had the drains out I bought firm compression waist nippers at WM & Amazon (bodysuits as well, but I'm sure that won't be comfortable for a guy, lol!!)
  20. Hi everyone - I'm 10 days out from a lower body lift and inner thigh lift... I'm finally starting to feel human again. I knew this was going to be rough, but wow... Luckily, other than pain I've had no complications. I had 2 of my 4 drains taken out on Wednesday and am pretty sure the other two will come out next Wednesday at my 2 week checkup. I had my surgery with Dr. Shiffrin in Chicago. I think it was a little more than some of the quotes I've saw tossed around here, but I felt really comfortable with him and knew that I was going to get a good result based on feedback and pictures of the work he's done. He's just a really down to earth guy. I've been wearing really loose sweat pants ever since surgery. Today, I tried on a pair of jeans for the first time. They fit fine in the legs but were tighter around my waist than pre-surgery... but I had to laugh because I'm not really sure where my waist is anymore. I'm used to my pants going under my gut, but the gut is gone! Did any of you find that your clothes fit a lot different after surgery (or even go up a size), or is it just a matter of giving enough time for the swelling go down?
  21. Well I had my surgery yesterday 10 five, at about 8. Went upstairs and was in the recovery room. Then my blood strip pressure started dropping out and they were worried increase fluids Etc. And then he had to go back in and check for a bleeder and we found it. And I went up to ICU and in this afternoon after I was feeling better I am back down in a regular room. That said, it wasn't a bad or frightening experience at all I've been able to have broth and Jell-O and Crystal Light today and use the bathroom and I hope to go home tomorrow. Struggling

I had my VSG 7/24/17 and I’m down 75 lbs. and counting. Most of it has been a great and life-changing experience. I’ve had no complications (so far), no pain, no nausea or vomiting, and I can tolerate nearly everything. My taste for things has not changed, although my cravings have. I do crave healthy whole foods over junk for sure. I only have two things that I’m struggling with; 1. Much of the time I don’t even want to eat. Of course, I follow my program to the letter and I eat but after I do I just feel like uhg…why do I bother. Other times, when the food is really tasty, I get frustrated that I’m full after 4 or 5 bites. But I deal with it realizing that eventually, it will get easier. 2. Clothing: I struggle with this because I’m working my ass off to be successful at getting healthy and fit. I refuse to be the person who will wear their big clothing until goal. That’s just ridiculous for me. I look like a slob in a **** or pants that are 3 sizes too big. I just can't-do it. Goodwill has been my favorite place to buy shirts and I usually find nice stuff but pants are near impossible to find because I’m 5’8” and everything is too long for me. What really sucks is that I must have 8-10 sports coats and blazers that look like robes on me now. The struggle is real people 😊 What do others think and what would relevant advise would you give? JC

I’m in need of a sleeve buddy!!!

I just had my sleeve on 09/27 at UAB in Birmingham, Alabama 35202. I was in the hospital for 2 days and it’s been 8 days I haven’t had any complications thus far.
  24. How much you lose is up to you. Typically they say about 60% of excess weight but it can be more or less depending on your ability and desire to exercise and eat right. But the battle isn't with your stomach- it's with your mind. We have an addiction and you have to treat it as such. And getting active will help. I took up swimming because I have bad knees and it's been great. For a few weeks to a few months eating will be much different than you're used too. Full very fast. EAT SLOWLY. If you overeat I guarantee you will only want to do it once. Follow the plan your doctor gives you and don't deviate. They have a reason they do what they do. You will gradually be able to eat more but never like you used to. I just had my first ice cream in 4 years. 1 scoop filled me up. And no real desire to have more. The quantity you'll be able to eat will vary depending on what you're eating and how fast. But don't push it. I've had to find other things to replace my eating. I can still eat most things just in much smaller quantities. I don't do rice or much pasta or potatoes as they fill me up very fast and no room for the healthier- and tastier- things. I felt great after surgery. Told the doctor I've had worse paper cuts. No pain, no gas, no upset stomach. But I'm one of the lucky ones. Expect some problems like gas and just have a heat pad ready - it helps. There can be complications- that's true with any surgery but, again, follow instructions for hygiene and type of food. Excess skin? Oh yeah! I've lost about 250 pounds and I look like a partially deflated balloon. But I'm working at losing some more to have skin removal. Need a BMI of around 35 before that happens. How long again is a matter of how much and how fast you lose. Would I do it again? In a heartbeat! I wish I had done it 10 years before I did. But fear kept me from trying. I heard a quote bt Will Smith. " God puts the best things in life on the other side of fear." How true! Finally I would recommend a book called Weight Loss Surgery For Dummies. Very informative. Good luck
  25. Not to mention the fact she thinks the only way to avoid complications is to follow surgeons directions and look at pictures? You can have plenty of complications simply from the surgeon, your body, or just the situation. It's a dangerous surgery and lots of people have complications the fact that she thinks that she's immune to them simply because she's in God's hands is ridiculous. Good luck to her... you all have done your part.. I appreciate this input. And hopefully the op does too.. Thankfully my surgeon was qualified and I did lots of research.
