    February 2019 Sleevers?

This month is 6 months out now for us 2019 February sleeve Surgery twins! How are we all doing? Any common problems? Everyone looking and feeling great? I am down over 90lbs. and would love to lose another 25-30 lbs. - but as expected losing is getting slower. Only negative issues for me so far; 1. I was really tired for a few months after surgery butt that is better now, much more energy than before surgery! 2. I have woken up several times at night choking on stomach acid. Not eating for a couple hours before bed, and we got a bed that props my head up a bit and that seems to have resolved that for the most part at home, however when I travel for work I tend to eat later, and stay in hotels where the beds are flat is certainly when I have the issue most often. 3. I do have some loose skin, but its not terrible... 4. I have thrown up a few times but only if I take my multivitamin on an empty sleeve... For the positives - I Look better, I sleep better, I feel better, I( have more energy, and many more! I hope you guys are all doing great - let us know!
  2. So it's been a while since I posted - but progress has been amazing.

My VSG was 5/1/17.ย  I dropped to 220lbs and stayed there for some time.ย  This was a huge win for me - so I decided to take the next step and I met with an amazing plastic surgeon who helped me with the next step - excess skin removal.ย  There were three things that needed to be addressed 1) abdominal hernia's 2) panniculectomy and a 3) abdominoplasty.

First, talk to your plastic surgeon - I spoke with several, and these are expensive procedures - but I finally found a surgeon that advised me that the panniculectomy could be covered byย health insurance - and it was - saving me nearly $5000.ย  Overall I still paid $7k out of pocket - but way better than the $12 - $14k that I had been quoted by others.

I had my reconstructive surgery 1 month ago - the surgeon removed 14lbs of skin and fat - and I dropped a few more pounds - and am now weighing in at 195.ย  My highest weight was 445lbs.ย  I way less than when I started high school - and I feel amazing - I am still recovering from the surgery because it is fairly invasive - so pics to follow - but what an amazing journey - I never thought I would get here.ย

My journey has been almost 14 years - a failed lap band, massive complications from that, weight gain and then struggling to gain the nerve to try again with the VSG - but my care team has been amazing - and I cannot thank them for giving me my life back.ย  At 52 I am the healthiest I have been since I was 14.ย ย

Please remember, the journey can be tough, the struggles are real, the pain is there - but it's your life you are fighting for - and there is nothing more important than that.

  3. My original goal weight was 180 set by both the surgeon and myself. I made goal my first year and then I set the 170 goal which I have also made and stayed under for the last few months. I have lost approximately 90 + % of my excess weight. I wear a size 10 jeans and med tops and am comfortable where I am, although sometimes part of me says I should get to 155 for the normal BMI. The other part says if I didn't have the extra skin I would be there, sigh.

Best exercise routines -100+ lbs weight loss?

Exercise will definitely help tone up loose skin and cardio is great for weight loss
  5. Iโ€™m Day 16 post op. 25lb down. I also started body contour massages and Iโ€™m wearing a girdle similar to those used post plastic surgery to avoid sagging skin as much as I can. Still struggling with my daily goal of 60gr of protein.

    OLDER peeps (50+) exercise

I have almost no body fat left. At my heaviest, 10 years ago, I was 260. I'm at 115 now. As you can imagine (even with very little fat left) I have a lot -- they tell mw 12 lbs -- loose skin in all the areas you would expect. At nearly 55 years old, my skin has done better than I expected but its still a mess especially in my bottom, breasts and thighs and arms. Occasionally, I do pull-ups to tighten my arms and core. At this size, with this much extra skin, there is no firm to be had in the loose areas. It's not in the cards. I knew this going in. I consulted with a plastic surgeon long before my sleeve and he was very frank with me. He said that there was no getting around what was going to happen and that the smaller I got the worse the hanging curtain appearance of my rump and thigh skin would be. He correctly predicted that my DD's would completely deflate...that my breasts would be awful. Because my breasts would disappear, my back and side skin would begin to drape , too. He also predicted that my belly skin skirt would not be a tremendous factor and likely absorb (it mostly did) but that my abdomen would be wrinkled and soft. He told me that my arms would not fair well but that they would do far better than my thighs. He did tell me that if I was diligent in eating high protein, my body would maintain muscle well. He based all of this on the general make up of my body, the condition/elasticity/density of my skin, and my general muscle tone. None of it had anything to do with predicted exercise. I had a neck lift last year. I couldn't live with that extra skin.
  7. Howdy sleevers! My weight has stabilised at about 69kg over the past 5-6 months, and an opportunity came up with my plastic surgeon to take a cancellation surgery place (with 1 weeks notice) for last Tuesday 6th August for my first planned skin removal, FDL tummy tuck, and I went for it I had been set to get this operation at end of November. I got home late yesterday after 5 days in hospital, and with 1 central drain still in place until I see my surgeon for follow up on Tuesday. Very happy with how my tummy is looking so far, and post op pain is being managed with panadol and some endone still. My waist was quite small before the op, but looks REEAAALLY tiny now, even with the post op swelling I plan to have second skin removal at the end of November, after being in my little sister's wedding party, to get breast reduction and lift. Then further operations for upper arms in inner thighs next year. Who else has started skin removal operations now post sleeve? Cheers, Tanya

    50 and Up Sleevers

I have no regrets on having the sleeve, BEST decision I ever made. I'm happy where I'm at. But then get upset with myself because I'm not loosing anymore, and think I should loose more. I have been bouncing the 3 pounds up and down for the past going on 3 months now. It get's me depressed about it. I have to get a grip on where I want to be. Hope everyone is doing ok also and enjoying life to the fullest.
  9. Very true haha..but I have never felt confident in my own skin during job interviews while so big..but soon though hehe..
  10. Beautiful. Your skin is glowing.

    OLDER peeps (50+) exercise

My baggy skin is my medal of honour! Every time I look at it, I'm so proud of how well I've done to shed the fat that used to live under it. And if there's anyone who thinks it looks gross, they can 'jog on' - as they say in my neck of the woods. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Best exercise routines -100+ lbs weight loss?

Congrats on your gym membership. There is no secret to bariatric weight loss โ€“ Work your plan. The best exercise is the activity you do consistently. Find something you enjoy. Each of us have a starting fitness level. (I was lucky to walk a half hour starting out) start slow and build up. Increase your pace, intensity, or resistance as you get stronger. My experience: Sleeve 2014, age 45 lost over 100lbs in six months (not the norm) I would have been happy if it took me a year or more. I was a true couch potato. I was not thrilled about exercise. My surgeon made his patients sign that they will add an hour of activity 5 to 6 days a week (mostly walking) I started walking and built up. My goal was to do a 5K for cancer in memory of my Mother. (she never got to see me fit and healthy) Third month My weight stalled. I sold my treadmill and got a gym membership. Best decision ever. I mixed up different types of cardio. I ventured into the weight room. Muscle has helped fill out some loose skin.๐Ÿ˜‰ Be open to where fitness may take you. I went from an obese couch potato to distance running (10K half and full marathon) hiking, kayaking, bicycling. Never take your health for granted.
  13. My BMI is right at 50. I went through a lot of emotions when I was first considering the surgery. I have already talked myself out of it twice. I have had...wavering support from those who I thought would be extremely supportive. I've heard everything from "surgery is the easy way out!" to admonishments of "you're going to look gross with all that extra skin". I keep reminding myself that they do not matter. If I don't have this procedure, I may very well develop diabetes or have a heart attack. I would suggest looking for free support groups within the community. Dig a little deeper than just the surface. Hospitals tend to hold these in the evenings. I know my center has one and I can't wait to start going (life has been too busy thus far). But the requirement is POST op. And if you can't find one on your own, you can always start one. You can easily set aside time at a library or a high school for free. BUT We can be supportive here, even if not in person. Once you start on this journey, you are forever one of us!
  14. Well long narrow neck , remind myself of a Galopagos Tortoise/turtle, you can now see my collarbones, the startings of first 2 ribs, doctors would have no problem doing carotid Doppler , nothing in the way, people do tell me I look good, the few who still recognize me. I can't shake the fear I look like " failure to thrive" but perhaps this is what people ARE SUPPOSED to look like? Remember I spent the bulk of my Adult Life looking like Bip The Michelin-Man' s Sweet Sister, all bulges and chipmunk cheeks, cuddly like a fluffy stuffed toy Teddy- Bear. Now I fear l look like I moved to Emaciation Heights. The high cheekbones of Daddy's side show now, I have maintained for years there is Native American/ First Nations blood, depending which side of the 55th parallel you're on. Yeah the only visible legacy this strawberry blond, fair skinned critter has. Yeah the Celtic shading from Mama's side but the high cheekbones which I had NO Clue were THERE, remember even as a baby sheep this lamb always looked fluffy never sleek. But every Day I weigh less, look like Dead Ancestors I never considered resembling but as I reassemble into a New Me, I have keep hanging on until the Final Countdown! Now 187.8 pounds so approaching 1/2 the size I was when I started on the WL trek in earnest October 2017, although I had really started my search 4 years ago almost to the exact date. And I still haven't had that dang- blasted August appointment, OSU Bariatrics is going to be shocked, I was still 235- 240 in April when my last appointment was. If they become shocked, let them be, I have felt abandoned, like if I don't require more surgical intervention--- I Am BORING! The animals at the Columbus zoo at least gave me eye-to-eye contact, not the emotional neglect I have felt. If I don't simmer down before the 14th, somebody gonna get a piece of my mind, and yes, I have enough mind to whack off a chunk and hurl it at their unexpecting noggin! You see I do not suffer fools gladly, and I do not tolerate being ignored anymore, this Doormat will never have mud rubbed into ME once again, as my Soul Sister Reba McENTIRE has stated I'M NOT GOING OUT LIKE THAT! Thanks for stating it in a song.So yes, although I still don't look my age, with the wrinkling I'm starting to look a little closer to True.

    On Q Pain system?

I had the on-Q when I had thoracic surgery to remove a tumor from my esophagus. It is a little tube that is inserted at the surgical site. It connects to a softball sized sphere that is full of the pain medicine - not narcotic, but an anesthetic kind of like novocaine or lidocaine. The sphere slowly compresses on itself until it is empty. This can take several days, so the anesthetic is continual. You wear a little pocket with a strap to hold the sphere. The tubing is often sutured into the skin to prevent it from sliding out accidentally. It is used for surgical sites that are extensive and painful - maybe like a big hernia repair, an open gall bladder removal, or like my chest surgery where I also had a chest tube and intercostal nerves were involved. It is not used that much for basic laproscopic surgeries which have minimal pain compared to open surgeries. The sutures on mine were very bothersome. Every time I accidentally caught the tubing on something it felt like my skin was being ripped off. I've never heard of someone having it for laproscopic weight loss surgery. The pain associated with WLS is from gas (Gas is put into your abdominal cavity to expand the field of view. It is sucked out, but any residual gas has to dissipate into the tissues on its own and that can be uncomfortable. I had NO gas pain after gastric bypass.) The other pain associate with WLS is surgical pain of the procedure itself. There is a lot that goes on underneath those little laproscopic incisions. But it is not unbearable. For comparison, I would say my broken pelvis and ribs from a horseback accident were MUCH more painful. That was a 9/10. My thoracic surgery was a 6-7/10. My total knee replacement was a 5/10. My gastric bypass was 4/10. I needed morphine maybe twice in the hospital, percocet for a day at home, and then tylenol for about a week.
  16. Whoops - arm exercise was 6 weeks to prevent pulling on skin and increasing scar - arm skin is sooo thin. Also I use the silicone scar tape rather than a topical cream. For about 5 months. Arm scars were the ones I hoped to minimize.
  17. When the weight was coming off faster, I had some sagging in my face and my chin/neck looked sort of shrunken with wrinkly waddles. Now, the weight loss has slowed and my body has done what I call "redistribution". At certain angles, I can still see some of the wrinkly waddles in my chin/neck area, but for the most part, it's sort of evened out. As I'm staring 50 in the face, I'm pleasantly surprised at my skin. For most of my life, people have complimented me on it, even when I was super-sized. I guess I was genetically blessed in that department, plus I've always taken care of my skin. I can see the aging, sun-spots and such. But I really don't have too many wrinkles, although I do have some persistent dark circles under my eyes that I'm very self-conscious of. For me, my flappy arms are my biggest point of shame and I will probably look into having them taken care of in the future.
  18. I had a mini face lift, which is the neck and jaw line area after loosing the first 2/3 of my excess weight. Years later, I am on my losing the last 1/3. As usual, it comes off the face first. I met with a cosmetic surgeon last week, and I will see him in the Spring. It is a safe procedure, will update me a bit. No fat to remove, no muscle to tighten, just some loose skin. I had expected that and I am still glad I did it after losing the first 90 or so. It made a big difference. Note that I am 62. I think young women should give it time and your skin can recover. For those of us with less elasticity, cremes won't do a lot.
  19. I haven't checked in for a long time. Thought I'd give an update. So after getting within 15 pounds of my goal, which was 167 the last time I posted, which was approx 16 months after surgery, I little by little started to slide into some old habits - using food for comfort, not eating enough protein, filling up on carbs, etc etc.ย  As of 3/31/19 I hit another bottom. I'd gone back up to 213 (my top weight was 241) and I was physically miserable and it was impacting my mental and spiritual health. What I was eating was NOT feeding me in any way. My mother had passed away and I found myself avoiding grief by eating anything I wanted.ย  As of 4/1/19 I began by doing a month of Whole30 to eliminate foods that were causing me distress and inflammation. It was a wake up call I needed. My skin cleared up, my inflammation is in check, my eyes are clear, my body feels more energetic and I don't feel the need to nap everyday due to fatigue, I can take the stairs without dread, and I feel freedom from the effect of food - even peace - for the first time in my life. I did not get to this place of paying REAL attention to nutrition until I hit a bottom. I was one month from turning 55 and I knew if I didn't do something, I was going to really plunge into a despair I might not come back from.ย  I completely threw myself into learning how to cook from a place of health, not putting butter and cheese on everything to "flavor" it (including salad).ย  I've eliminate dairy, sugar and flour from my diet almost 100% and I've got a primarily Mediterranean diet at this point. My spiritual/mental/physical health is so much more important to me now. I'm feeling so grateful.ย  I am 178 pounds - and figure my body is going to find it's stopping point when it's ready. I feel committed to my health in ways I wasn't when I had the sleeve surgery. I thought I was ready to change, I really did, but I was not willing to admit that some foods not only trigger me, they plunge me into addiction and it's very hard for me to find my way back to peace with food once I jump off track.ย  So I make it my intention to stay clear of processed foods, junk food, fried food, the things that make me not only in full addict mode, but enhance my feelings of low self worth and depression.ย  If I don't have the first one, I don't have to eat the last.ย  It's doable. One day at a time.ย  If you had surgery and gained weight back - DO NOT DESPAIR - you can find your way to health. It may take time and it will surely take effort, but once you get to that place of being done hurting yourself, you will want something different so you'll do something different and find a path back to wellness. It took me a little over two years to feel "ready" to change. I have no more shame for being someone who gained weight after surgery (I sure did though...and it was painful), I feel open and willing and I know that my experience was mine to have.ย  If I can help anyone else feel hopeful that it's not too late, no matter how many times you've tried to heal yourself and better your health, then it will all have been worth it. I'm 55 and I can tell you from the bottom of my heart...it gets greater later. xoxo

PS I've attached some before and after pics. Some are before gastric sleeve surgery, some are from March of this year and now (before and after getting back on track).

    OOTD

Left: OOTD* for a client meeting this morning. Right: What I changed into immediately when I got home, lol. *What a difference 20 lbs makes. Around mid-May (~3 months ago) I couldn't zip the zipper all the way up on this black dress, and it was TIGHT across my butt. Now it's too loose to wear by itself - I have to wear something underneath, AND belt it.
  22. So I had my surgery 12-31-18 and I have lost 110 pounds so far. Iโ€™m still about 40-50 away from my goal and I havenโ€™t lost any weight in about a month. Im not gaining but Iโ€™m not loosing. Iโ€™m drinking all my Water. Taking all my Vitamins and working out. Iโ€™m also still losing my hair pretty bad. I guess Iโ€™m in a stall. How do I resolve this yโ€™all?
  23. Hello Everyone, I have a question... Has anyone taking Phentermine after weight loss surgery? Iโ€™m 2 year out and Iโ€™m considering getting some just to loose the extra weight and get to my goal. Because I have been stalled for 7 months. I just have 30 more pounds before I reach my goal. Thanks.
  24. My larger incision that is sore is also on my lower right side. It doesn't burn but it aches. It is the only one that is really sore. I have to wear really loose pants because it's so sore. I thought for sure the incision with the drain tube would be my worst incision. It's super red because the nurse had trouble gluing it closed. It doesn't hurt at all.my follow up is also Thursday. Hope it's nothing serious. 5'4" Starting weight 297 VSG on 7/31/19 265 CW 253 GW 135 Sent from my [samsung Galaxy] using BariatricPal mobile app
  25. Yeah, my first post-op is this Thursday. Man that incision is just being....difficult. It was burning so much earlier it felt like someone has a match up against my skin. Maybe unhappy nerve endings?? Just throwing out anything that comes to mind....
