I have ordered the unjury protein powder to try, I start preop diet on the 22nd. I'm hoping the "unflavored" can be mixed with iced tea or lemonaid.. I will let you know as soon as I try it.
  2. Ok, so I misunderstood your purree'd stage. Keep in mind guys that your docs just want you to get used to food at this point. They are not counting on the foods you consume just yet to have your daily Protein intake yet. I would go with the mashed potatos with the carmelized vidalia onions (no chicken). Any meat I pureed was just gross so I depended on my shakes and greek yogurt for my protein. I would eat the mashed at dinner time and with the onions it adds a little extra flavor. Believe me you will love it! I also made mashed sweet potatos too. The refried Beans and chees with a little picante, sour cream and guac was alson a favorite of mine for those two weeks. Again no meat. You can have oatmeal and grits as well. I know the carbs are a little high in these but then again you shouldn't worry about those until you get to the softs. Make these for dinner and do your shakes and yogurt during the day, it gives you something to look forward to. I only had to do 2 weeks of the mushy stage, a month seems a long time to endur to me too. But every docs plan is different!
  3. Thanks so much Meg! I don't have ANY problem with liquids and never have! I can drink Water three or four big gulps with no issues..I normally don't, but I have forgetting that I shouldn't!!. I don't feel sick with anything, just like a lump is in my throat or pain in my chest after a few bites. Not always, just sometimes. That is what is so weird to me, that it comes and goes! I could not even take 3 bites of that cottage cheese today, but drank 5 oz of unjury chicken soup. Then 2 1/2 hours later had a Protein drink! Tonight for dinner, I tried a salmon burger and while I only had about 4 small bites (and it was heaven), it felt fine! I probably could have eaten a little more, but I was afraid I would get that pain, so I stopped. The salmon burger was alot more dense than that cottage cheese and it didn't give me any trouble! Maybe just certain times of the day, I swell up or something? I don't know. I just wish it would be consistant. That way it wouldn't worry me that something is wrong. I do take 40 mg of Nexium daily. The last couple days, I have been trying to eat something every couple of hours, thinking that maybe it would help. I will just keep pressing on and pray that it will get better soon! I guess as long as I can get stuff to go down and stay down, it can't be anything too bad! Kelly quote name='mel30' timestamp='1306976921' post='158588'] This is also for Kellyw I was sleeved on the same day as you and I am having the same problems. I can only get about 2-3 bites in and then I get the horrible chest pain. It also takes about 10 minutes to go away. I usually will get up and walk and pray that, that will fix the pain. I totally understand what you are going through I put a call into my doctor's office late today so I will let you know what he says. Hang in there, it has to get better for us
  4. Your required Protein is the protein obtained from meals combined with the protein obtained from protein supplements (protein shakes and protein bars). If you concentrate on eating meals with a high protein content, then you can begin to offload the number of protein shakes you consume each day.
  5. Am five months out from RNY and doing well, lost about 39kg so far and generally well although last week or two have been very very tired and drained. I stopped Protein shakes about a month ago and I wondered if that's the trigger? Are Protein Shakes a lifetime thing?
  6. hi[emoji3] well first id like to wish you a lot of luck !! this is the first day of your new life!! i was sleeved a week ago, 2/10. im gonna be completely honest with my experience.. so here it goes. i got to the hospital at 545am.. did all my final paperwork and they put me in a room to wait for doc. they hooked me up to IVS and asked me questions.. blah blah blah.. i was feeling so nervous- i almost wanted to back out. but i told myself that ive wanted this for so long and come so far in this process so there was no turning back! i went in and doc told my family itd be a 1 to 2 hour surgery.. but it only took 40 min because everything went perfect! (so blessed) so i woke up in recovery all drugged up.. not knowing where i was lol. all that was on my mind was where was my family.. i was told i had to wait.. i felt tired and nothing really else.. fast forward to an hour and i was wheeled to my room with family right behind me. still drugged up and sleepy- i didnt know much of what was going on. i felt like i was in a fog. i started getting nauseous as heck.. so unbearingly nauseous. i demanded meds and after a few diff ones the nausea went away. i tried sleeping but they kept waking me up every 3 hours to walk. the first time i was thinking there was no way i could walk after surgery. but it wasnt bad! i took it slow and by the next time i got up i just wanted to get it done with to go back to bed lol. the first night wasnt too bad .. i had plenty of pain meds and slept mostly good. the next day i woke up and was told i needed to drink 10 medicine cups of fluids in order to go home.. piece a cake.. or so i thought. it took me 8 hours to drink 5 cups so needless to say i didnt go home. it was so hard for me to keep liquids down. it felt tight and it felt like the fluid was the girl from charlie and the chocolate factory and my digestive system was the chocolate tube she got stuck in. lol only way i knew how to put it.. so the 2nd night for me was hellll.. i woke up every 10 minutes. the oxygen i had to wear was annoying.. i just wanted my own bed. the next morning i woke up determined to drink those ten cups! it took me 3 hours to drink 5 medicine cups so i was determined to drink those last 5.. and i did! i definitely made progress from the day before. so i go home.. ride home is a bit bumpy so bring a pillow to hold against your tummy.. for me that was a life saver.. so i get home and my bed was waiting for me for the past week ive been sleeping a lot lately. no stomach pains really my incisions are healing nicely. just a little sore. i was frustrated because everytime id drink liquids i would have to use the bathroom and then id be hungry. im still hungry often but its because im not consuming food. honestly the first few days i had about 4 breakdowns a day. i cried and cried and told my family i regretted getting sleeved.. it was SO hard to meet my fluids and protein goal. but that feeling of regret it gone. im doing better everyday.. and it gets easier everyday. all i can do is try my best. and make sure i get my walking in. i was instructed to wall 10-15 min a day. on valentines day (four days post op) i checked in with doc.. 16 pounds down!! he says im on right track.. ive had some shoulder pain..thats normal. gas x strips helped a lot with that. i wish you the best during your journey. youre gonna do fabulous !! make sure you take your vitamins. very important! dont stress - take it day by day and if you have any questions please feel free to message me. also im not too far ahead of you.. id love to hear about your experiences too sorry for the book lol happy sleeve day!
  7. Keep your eye on the prize and don't let negative thoughts take over. I know what you mean as far as being really scared but anytime you feel overwhelmed just have a motto they you say to yourself a mantra if you will. Your life will completely change- food won't be the focus of it anymore and that's a good thing. Failure is NOT an option- sometimes you might get off-track but you'll need to redirect yourself. Make a shift in your thinking. You said you are admitting that you can't do this yourself- but you are doing it yourself- you are taking control of your life and catapulting it in the right direction. Remember to keep your eye on the prize and don't get distraction by the what-ifs.

    A whole lot of Protein!

I had to do protein shakes a week before surgery but never clear liquid until after. I was told 60-80 protein but I am also tall (5'10") and have read in the past that the taller you are the more you need. I am struggling to get the protein in. Good luck
  9. I agree they taste great but are soy protein, not whey, and my doc does not recommend.
  10. A lot depends on your plan post-op. A lot of folks are on protein shakes only, a lot aren't. If you're actually eating food, do a test run preparing a post-op meal. You'll see what would make it easier. As a different view, I never used special plates, spoons, forks, or whatever. Because I was on pureed food for 6 weeks, a blender helped. Once you measure 3oz of protein for a week of 3 meals, I was able to accurately eyeball it thereafter. I wouldn't buy any medical stuff unless the Doc says you'll need it. I was open and I didn't have a binder or anything else. Oddly, being OCD I've over prepared for enough things to learn it's best to wait until I have an actual need. I spent a lot of money on things I thought I might need only to have them sit it a closet never used. Good luck and enjoy the ride. Tek
  11. I didn't have a binder with RNY. I did with plastic surgery, but that obviously wasn't laproscopic - I had HUGE incisions with that. things I used a lot: blender, kitchen scale, ramekins (although your measuring cups will work for this. I used my ramekins so I'd know how much I was eating. You can get them in different sizes like 4 oz, 8 oz, etc - but your measuring cups will work for this, too). A baby spoon (I still use one at five years out because I love it!). I also bought individual packets of various protein powders so I wouldn't waste money on huge tubs of powder that I ended up hating. Before surgery, I liked the chocolate and vanilla ones, but after surgery, I found those too sweet (at least for the first few weeks or months). I preferred the fruity ones after surgery - and/or savory ones, like chicken soup-flavored. So get a variety of flavors...

When and how often did you stall?

Don't understand parts of your post about sleepers (sleevers?) and spatters. Keep in mind that everyone's journey is unique. There are some patterns like the week 3 stall that many experience, but not all. No point worrying about them at this point. The important thing to accept and remember is that your weight loss chart will look more like a stair case than a ski slope no matter which type of surgery you have, so you have to be patient while your body adjusts to all the changes. There are things you can try, such as increasing your Water, exercise or Protein, but you have to tinker with the balance a bit until you hit a combination that works for you. If you opt to have the surgery and do experience a stall, talk with your surgeon's support staff and check the better message boards for advice. RNY is a wonderful gift of good health, but like all WLS procedures, it is a tool, not a magic bullet. Good luck!
  13. Mine did not like pintos and cheese. I think it was too high in fat. I'm gonna try homemade next time. I ate 2 T of hummus tonight and it was heavenly. If anyone had told me I'd eat hummus without crackers/bread Ida told them they were nuts. But just to taste something not sweet and not soup was heavenly! Not much protein but oh well.
  14. @Mobeans63 I agree with you! I just don't see how you could possibly eat enough Protein, even if all you ate was high quality high protein foods. There just isn't enough room in my little pouch!
  15. At 5 months post op, I am still have 2 shakes a day. I can't eat enough to get all the Protein in that is required without it. The way it is, I only eat protein as I never have enough room to eat any veggies unless I eat them as a snack. I also have fruit as a snack.
  16. I too have to drink the shakes to get enough protein in. I am 8 months out and plan to drink them forever. My doc does not mind and in fact incourages it if we feel hungry.
  17. Dr. Jossart, there's a pretty strong current of belief around here that after lap sleeve, it's "impossible" to absorb more than 20g of Protein at a time. This is often used to say that high-Protein shakes, for instance -- say 50g or 60g of protein -- are a waste of money. Many people claim that their doctors and nutritionists gave them this fact. Also, I DO find some reference to protein malabsorption on the net -- for instance, a consent form I found referenced it. However, I searched the medical databases and couldn't find ANY reference to lap sleeve significantly altering protein metabolism (intake, yes, but not basic metabolism). From what I understand, one of the primary "selling points" of the lap sleeve is that it is not malabsorptive. I guess if the smaller, scarred stomach is unable to produce sufficient gastric acids or pepsin or whatever, protein metabolism might be challenging, but that seems a stretch (and I believe it would be noted in literature). I'm starting to think that the "20 grams of protein in a sitting" meme is an urban legend. One possibility is that since the lap sleeve used to be just part of the lap sleeve plus DS procedure, which unless I'm mistaken IS malabsorptive, there may be old data floating around masquerading as current truth. I'd appreciate it if you could shed any light on this, because a lot of people are giving a lot of other people a lot of potentially incorrect advice :lol0:

    Post op success

I had surgery September 25, 2013 and I'm doing well. I've had no major issues except the dreaded problem with gas which comes with gastric bypass surgery. I have lost at least 97 lbs and counting. I don't weigh myself and my last weigh in was at the end of March so I might have lost more. I will get weighed again maybe in May but more likely not till the end of June when,I have my next doctors appointment. My eating is good for the most, part. I still can only eat small amounts of Protein so I have a Quest bar and a Protein shake everyday to supplement. That's all I can think of to say.

    Surgery Day!!

Hi surgery twin! Yes, I thought the same thing, but what I’m being told is that it’s not really hunger pangs, it’s gas. I will be so glad when it’s gone. I have been trying to walk so it would expel faster, but I still have a ways to go before it’s completely gone. How are you doing with protein? I can’t get any in because they all make my tummy hurt. I don’t know what to do. 😩
  20. Hello, so here is where I am I have been to my seminars, got the approval from my Insurance, now in order for me to schedule my Surgery Date I must lose 10 pounds by Friday. I have started my Protein shakes but don't know if that will be enough to get the weight off. Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated. Second I am 5'2 230 pounds can anyone with my similar stats tell me how their weight loss went (fast, slow, stalling)? I am getting closer to getting this done and while I have done lot's of research I still have many many questions. Nellybell

    Any Road Warriors? Need advice

I spend a lot of time on the road. I'm low carb high fat so I rely a lot on breve lattes, egg salad wrapped in swiss cheese, nuts, avocados, Cole slaws ect. The hard part is dealing with inevitable leftovers. Without access to a fridge it gets rough. Some protein shakes can be purchased at 7-11 or gas stations. Most hotels have a gym and yoga is always accessible. I do a fair amount of wining and dining. This is rough. I can't drink and eat at the same time. I always schedule apps and drinks so it takes some pressure off.
  22. Oh I feel so stressed. I am trying to prepare and stock up on things I need for after I have my surgery this week (Thursday OMG!!) and I know we have to has SF Jello, Protein shakes,SF popsicles does the color/flavor matter? but I also read about drinking broth. Any suggestions on the broth? Can I make my own or just buy it? How long do we drink it for? I am just a nut case today trying to sort things out. At least I have all my Vitamins and I found a Protein shake that I like. But I hear that can change after surgery. I know these are all dumb questions but I feel lost and scared of the unknown..

Five month stall and hair loss HELP!

I think it's fairly normal - I am between 4-5 months and my weight has been staying mostly the same for about 3 weeks. Granted I've had a lot going on (a flare up of auto-immune - steroids - and a death of an immediate family member) but still - stalls are frustrating a bit. When I have been paying attention to other things I noticed my body is really changing - my face and stomach are smaller. Have your measurements changed? now that my immediate trauma's are over it is time for me to get back to my main focus being on my diet (Protein protein protein) and moving my body. gentle yoga and walking for now. I hope to soon hear from you, and experience for myself, that the scale will be moving again too!

    March 19Th At 11:30Am

That is great everyone. We will all have to keep in touch an help each other out. I know I am on the countdown already to surgery. Looking at 40 hours till surgery time. Getting very excited. How is everyone doing with pre-op clear liquid diet. So far I am okay not missing the food. Married with 3 kids an meals still have to go on. I am drinking Isopure it has 40 grams of protein in it so I do half a bottle in am and other half at lunch. (tastes and like koolaide) Then tonight I am going to try Injury protein mix at dinner with my sf jello and Popsicle. Hope everyone has great day.

    Chinese buffet-1, Christie-0

I felt find but I stuck to the proteins and a little broccoli so really nothing that should have caused a problem for me. It was really weird to be staring at a plate that had almost nothing on it and know I wouldn't be able to finish even that little bit...but still yummy!
