    Preop and divorce

It's good that he will be there for you anyway. For many of us, the health problems (heart attack, diabetes, stroke, sleep apnea, inability to exercise, knee/hip replacement, asthma issues and more) associated with being overweight long-term are so much more extreme than the only medical solution proven to help us get to and stay at a healthy weight. I thought it was a little humorous that he said he could not imagine having 20% of his stomach. I thought—well, he won't have to imagine—he can ask you how it feels, and you will tell him. Also- no one seems to be interested in how it feels health-wise to be overweight. (Perhaps your husband is the positive exception here, but in my experience, most people are quick to talk about the surgery and how horrific the idea is, but not how horrific it is to have a heart attack at a young age, or any other obesity-related health problem. ) Literally no one would say, "Gee, don't you think quadruple bypass surgery is extreme? I can't imagine having my heart surgically altered". But weight loss surgery is a medical necessity for some and a hope of prevention for others. It can be truly life-saving. Not that you need to hear that, because you already know it. But he should probably hear it. It sounds like he might come around in the end, and I wish you both the best. I'm mostly writing this for others whose spouses may need some help understanding the medical nature of the procedure.

    What fears did you have?

Good post since I think we can all relate. I'm a few weeks away and am also experiencing some of those feelings, both rational and irrational. I think my biggest fear is that although I have GERD with the sleeve, will I be jumping into the fire with a bypass which is a more serious procedure? Will that introduce more ongoing serious health issues? For example, will I have to remove my gallbladder as someone I know who had a bypass? What if I get a leak or sepsis or any of the other serious complications? Will I lose weight or will I fail? My main worry is... In the end, will I regret the revision to bypass?
  4. I had bypass at 56 for all the reasons you listed. Good luck.
  5. I had bypass in December 2020. I lost 50 lbs. prior to surgery and have lost 110 lbs. since surgery. It's worth noting that I started with a BMI of almost 54. I've struggled with my weight all of my life. Over time, I developed Type 2 diabetes (which was getting worse) and sleep apnea. Although I was fully mobile, it was becoming more and more difficult to move around. I knew should I ever need joint replacement or fall, the future would not be pretty. Somehow, my blood pressure remained normal. It has been a good decision for me. I still have 45 lbs. to lose before I would not be considered overweight. I don't know if I will ever reach that or not. My loss has slowed down, which is expected, but still trending downward. If I never lost another pound, I would be happy. Daily living is no longer a struggle. I have energy and feel well. I have been off all diabetes meds since surgery. There is no guarantee that this change will be forever but for now, diabetes is in "remission." I am on cholesterol medication and according to my PCP, will probably remain on that. I still use a CPAP although the pressure has been lowered. Whatever decision you make, my advice is go to into it as a well-educated consumer. Read, research and talk with your PCP and/or specialists. I attribute my success to a well-grounded program that did not cut corners. I hated every minute of the preparation process and hoops I was required to jump through. I vowed I would never track my food. I thought I was unlikely to start to regularly exercise. I just wanted surgery to fix my problem and I wanted it now. But I now do all of what I said I never would. And I still have work to do. Surgery is a tool that can help. But it doesn't fix your brain. If you don't actually use the tool they way it's intended, it won't work. I've found this site to be the most helpful with members providing accurate and helpful advice. Be aware of other sites. I also participate in some Facebook groups where I am amazed at the blatantly incorrect advice given. It has also made me aware that there are many programs or surgeons who will be happy to take your business but offer little preparation or long-term support.
  6. if you read enough posts it seems that the rate of loss is a little slower after revision I’m currently 2 yrs post revision from VSG to RNY (for GERD not regain) and for me I have been able to maintain the same weight I was with VSG but I’m now GERD free. Initially I lost a little but since I was already at goal my surgeon wanted me to maintain not lose so I ate whatever I wanted for a short period of time. Then went back to normal (post bari lifestyle of moderation and overall food changes/substitution) Knowing what I now know, I think revisioners should consider asking their surgeons: 1. No GERD but substantial regain- Should I consider VSG to DS/SIPS for greater weightloss? 2. GERD and substantial regain- Should I convert from VSG to RNY with a longer bypass? 3. GERD but no regain- Should I convert from VSG to RNY with a slightly shorter bypass to prevent excess loss? Good Luck ❤️
  7. I'm 59 and having a bypass in 3 weeks. I just have HTN and apparently now I have sleep apnea, but there is a strong family history of diabetes and heart problems. I do have issues with reflux and Barrett's esophagus so that's why I'm getting the bypass.

    Considering a bypass advice please

I can't speak for bypass since I had the sleeve BUT I will echo the sentiment that I would do it again in a heartbeat! Its 100% worth the hard work and pain in the end. I had my sleeve done in March and am already almost down 100 of the 150 I want to lose! It's NOT the easy way out like some people think but its so so worth it. My quality of life has improved tenfold and blood pressure is in the healthy range again! Its not a small decision by any means so just do your research and read through the forums on here- they are full of support, testimonials, and great information!! Good luck on your journey!!

Has anyone ever gotten Nexplanon after VSG?

Talk to your doctor about whether there will be absorption issues. I take a lot of medications and was told I should get the sleeve because the absorption issues are really with bypass, not sleeve. However, birth control in general can be really iffy after WLS because you become much more fertile, so they tell you not to rely on pills alone. I don't know if nexplanon would be sufficient. However, common side effects of nexplanon include weight gain and mood swings, both things you want to avoid after WLS. If Yasmin worked for you before surgery, it might be best to stick with it (my surgeon requires me to be off my BCP for a month before and after surgery to reduce risk of blood clots), but also use back up birth control like condoms. The reason that they want you to use condoms or some other barrier method is all the hormonal changes after surgery - fat cells release estrogen. So, obviously, I'm just some random person on the internet and you should talk to your surgeon and whomever prescribes your birth control, but this is what I've learned from my research. Good luck!
  10. I had surgery in my 50s (I'm now in my early 60s), but there are people on here who had it in their 60s. I didn't have any co-morbidities when I had it, but at almost 400 lbs, I knew that was just around the corner if I didn't get rid of that weight. I'd do it again in a heartbeat and only wish I'd have had it 20 years ago. (p.s. I had bypass, but sleeve is a good surgery, too)
  11. I think most people have been posting on the other thread with the Sleevers. I was hoping more of us bypassers would post on here since it'll be a little different for us. So we're all within a few days of each other. EEEK. I'm excited but getting more nervous as it gets closer. Start my pre-op diet on 7/26.
  12. Hi all I am considering having a gastric bypass. Just want some peoples views on the procedure, recovery time, diet prior and after etc. I have a considerable amount to loose and have been dieting since birth and have some medical conditions but have found recently my health is suffering so need to do something. Any advice appreciated Big love Grace Xx
  13. Hi. I had gastric sleeve surgery in 2017. I went from 130kg down to 90kg, then slowly regained to 110kg. Over time I also developed GERD. I had revision surgery to gastric bypass in dec 2020. I’m happy to say that my GERD is gone completely. And weight loss has been great for me. It has been a little slower then the first time around. But happy to say I’m down to 77kg - so 13kg LOWER then I got to with the sleeve. Slow and steady, I’m in no rush, just so happy to be on the downward trend overall. All the best :)

    July Surgeries??

My revision was successful in that they were able to do the bypass and repair the hernia. I am in far more pain and discomfort than with my sleeve. Struggling with fluids because the hernia repair left inflammation in the esophagus. Sugar free Popsicles are the best right now. I have a 100 degree fever and am supposed to call if it hits 101. The gas pain is ridiculous. I have tried the simethicone drops, mylanta and walking. I am using a cane to walk
  15. I had a successful sleeve surgery five years ago, then had a baby and got stuck in a pandemic. I’ve put on so much weight, but still nowhere near my original starting weight and don’t intend to get back there! I am planning to get a revision surgery, and right now I am most seriously considering the mini gastric bypass. I contacted a couple of doctors and they tried to suggest a sleeve revision, but I can’t find any success stories of people who were re-sleeved and lost substantial quantities of weight. Which got me thinking?… Do any of the revision surgeries produce substantial weight loss? If you have gone from sleeve to the mini gastric bypass or another procedure and have a story to share I would greatly appreciate hearing it. Did your revision successfully eliminate your regain? Did you get lower than you did the first time and your weight loss goals? Were you able to lose all your excess weight on your second time around? Did it work as rapidly as the first one?
  16. I had a very successful sleeve surgery five years ago. I was so happy with the results. As I approached 40 I had a surprise pregnancy! As you can imagine this changed my body quite a bit. My child was born right at the cusp of the declaration of the pandemic and I have put on a lot of weight. No matter how I eat, no matter how little I’m eating, my body and hormones seem to want to hold onto the weight. At any rate, being a middle-age woman with a one year old means I need to take Care of my health, and I am seeking to get a revision from the sleeve to a mini gastric bypass. I’ll be paying cash and intending to have my surgery in Tijuana, although if you know someone great in Cancun which is much closer let me know! I’m really overwhelmed attempting to research doctors and hospitals in Tijuana. A surprising majority have a very high rating on Google maps and reviews. I don’t really know where else to look. So I am asking for recommendations that might narrow down my search. I am especially interested in hearing from people who have had this revision from sleeve to mini gastric. My goal is to have the surgery within the next 6 to 8 weeks so it’s really important I find somebody good. Please help!
  17. Yes, they gave me a PPI medication but it still isn’t working . When I explained the level of pain from the reflux, they told me it was normal . I already had GERD prior to my surgery where I would get this pain once every 2-3 months but my surgeon said he didn’t think it was often enough to switch to bypass. However, I’ve read that Gerd can worsen on some sleeve patients so I’m paranoid .
  18. Fortunately none of my meds contain NSAIDS. After researching, I was leaning towards the Bypass due to my GERD. I was going to have my gastroenterologist speak with my surgeon if he needed to. And unfortunately I can't move towards PT or other forms of treatment. I do periodically get procedures done on my spine but I need the pain meds and nerve meds on a daily basis. I know there is a lot to cover with my surgeon, I was just curious if anyone had previous experience with these things
  19. I think you're going to have to discuss these all with your surgeon. The surgery can cause a lot of constipation. Some pain meds can be taken after surgery, but NSAIDS usually cannot, especially with bypass. If you have GERD, you don't want to get the sleeve, because that can make it worse. I think there are a lot of issues there and probably you're going to want the doctors who treat you for these issues now to discuss your case with the surgeon, and maybe get a second opinion from a second surgeon. Is there any way you can move towards using PT and other forms of treatment for your back injuries, rather than medications? Just to simplify things. Good luck!

    Incision

Not sure if this is where I should ask this but, I was doing some house work today nothing major and noticed my pants were sliding down a tad and went to pull them up and I noticed I felt like something a little wet. Well it's like hardly nothing but still....it was one of my bigger incisions (from the bypass I had 4 and half weeks ago) that had a teeny tiny of blood and I'm guessing pus coming out. At first I was freaking but it's really not alot but I thought I was all closed up for good lol I know I should probably call my dr but I really hate calling them:( has anyone else had an issue like this? 21. I am in schertz! I don't think he would use the word no. I was afraid of that as well. He suggested gastric bypass for me. I have a bmi of 42:( but he listened to what I had to say and dealt with my tears as a sobbing mess. His team were super nice!! Please keep me updated on your journey!!! It would be nice to have a buddy in the area/same dr he's probably the nicest doctor I've ever met to be honest! I was so nervous I felt like I was going to bust up in hives!! He even gave me his personal email and would write me back during non working hours. You picked a good doctor [emoji16] Sent from my Pixel 4a using BariatricPal mobile app
  22. Also to add I had to pay for sleeve out of my pocket but the insurance covered my bypass because of the acid reflux issues and it was a “medical need”.
  23. I have had both Gastric sleeve 10/25/2018 and then later converted to a Roux-en-Y-Gastric Bypass with a hiatal hernia repair on 10/07/2020 per acid reflux issues so bad that it was damaging my throat My highest weight was 270 and with the sleeve I only managed to get down to 170. With the bypass I am currently at 150lbs. I feel so much better! The bypass took care of all the reflux issues and I have no issues with eating anything. I have less issues with food now then I did with the sleeve and I feel so much healthier. I have no dumping issues and can drink with no problems. I felt more restrictions honestly with the sleeve as everything hurt more. The extra weight loss is just a bonus!
  24. Hey there. I wanted to just see what other people's experiences were with their consultation, especially those with either eating disorders or other mental health diagnoses. I was recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder and have been on meds for about 2.5 months. My mental state has improved a lot and I have more cognitive ability to make good choices for myself. When I went in for my consultation for gastric bypass, I was incredibly candid with my doctor. I told him about how I've lost 70 lbs in the past by fasting and extreme workouts but sadly I gained it all back plus some because of the binge restricr cycle. I went on to talk about my rocky relationship with food and he stopped me short and asked me "has anyone ever told you that you have an eating disorder?" He then said that people with eating disorders can't have weight loss surgery and that I'd need to work out my problems before getting surgery. He's giving me 14 weeks to get my sh*t together so to speak but ultimately said it's up to me to get to a place where I've mended this relationship with food. I'll be on their diet plan during this period (have already started making conscious efforts and studying BED recovery on my own). So my question is this: when I told him about my struggles with my mental health and eating patterns he seemed to make it a point that if you have those issues, you don't qualify. While I understand that having untreated symptoms means you can't get surgery, I can't understand what being in control means if you have to still meet the BMI requirements? Besides wanting him to truly understand my history with food, don't most people going for weight loss surgery have moderate to severe disordered eating or mental health problems? Is he just testing me to see if I can show him I've worked on my problems? Or is it really that weird and rare that someone with mental health problems and a history with binge and restrict is going for a weight loss consultation? I thought thats what it's about? I know you stay on their diet plan and get used to that as kind of your new life but I can't understand what's "in control" enough to show the doctor I'm ready but still obese? If anyone wants to give me some advice and share their experiences telling their doc about their eating behavior and mental health struggles , I'm all ears. I can't stop thinking about it. I'm really working on self compassion and not trying to beat myself up. He made me feel that I'm not mentally healthy enough to even get help when I have been feeling stronger than ever with my new medication. Any insight and experience appreciated! 25. This was the best thing I've read today. I'll be having my revision from sleeve to bypass in a few weeks. I hope that I can have a similar story.
