Losing any weight before you get to your green zone is awesome! The dietician can shove it. My surgeon said he didn't care if I gained weight during the first couple of months. If I could lose weight without a band, I'd have done it. As far as he was concerned without proper fill, I didn't have a band. Lap Band's website says we can expect 1-2 pounds per week loss. It does not stipulate male vs. female rates of loss. You are doing just right. This is your journey, not hers. You do not need to starve to lose what she says you should be losing. This is a life-time event. You WILL get there. Enjoy the journey, be proud that you didn't let her send you into a binge, that is awesome!!

Well I'm new to all this lap-band socializing. Honestly hardily anyone knows that I had the procedure..I almost didn't tell my family but my boyfriend said he would tell her if I didn't..guess he is a pretty good guy. No one at my job knows so really the only people that know are my immediate family...and I asked them not to tell people. I'm not a 'Star Jones' wanna be...I just grew up in a family of athletes and to them I felt this would seem like I failed. I never had the hardships of growing up overweight..I didn't gain weight until adulthood...2 kids and a divorce later. So all my struggles I have had with my lap-band I have had to keep repressed..then I found this website and it's a GREAT out let to tell all how I am feeling and see that others are going through the same things.

skinnygirl replied to skinnygirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
yes i got up this morning and gained them both back. Calorie counting was easy, but this lapband is hard. If I eat more than 1/2 cup at each meal i gain. this does not make since to me at all. I get a fill loose then gain this is so discouraging! any help please! advice this is crazy and im mad!!! -
DON'T CANCEL YOUR FILL!!! Go in there with your head up and face the music. That's what I had to do last Monday, and I was exactly where you are today! I had gained, too. That's how you know you need a fill! If you could lose weight you wouldn't need a fill! Hopefully the person giving the fill will be compassionate - I have had a few experiences where I was made to feel like a failure for not losing and it really hurt. Then I talked to myself and reminded myself that if you aren't losing at your current level of restriction I need more restriction. I felt pretty much no restriction after my first 3 fills. I had my fourth fill last week and FINALLY feel it! I don't think I am quite at my sweet spot but it has made a huge difference and I have lost 6 pounds since last Monday. (I gained three, though, so it is a 3 pound net loss) (I haven't updated my ticker...) So don't get discouraged! It might not even happen with this fill, you might need more, but it will come I promise. I was doubtful, too! The worst thing you can do at this point is give up and not go into the office for that fill. Do it and reap the benefits. This is a marathon not a sprint!!! I'm rooting for you!

had fill 0n 6th down 2 more pounds, but today is first day back on solids. Sure hope don't gain any.did anyone gain after back on solids?
-
bbgray, I can relate to you about the restriction, but sometimes it takes several fills like the others have posted. I wanted to be real tight, well, I GOT it and had to go and get a unfill. Believe me, it was not a good feeling. Discuss this with your doctor and maybe he can up the amt a little more (not much, though). Please don't get discouraged, because one way or another we have all felt some disappointments on this journey. Sometimes I have to go away from here (lapband talk) and regroup. I see so much success here and it hurts when I'm not doing the same, but then when I regroup, I understand that we are all different and have different drs, thus our weight loss all won't be the same. You have lost and I think that you are doing a good job.

I too just called my Doctor's office to schedule my 4th fill. I was banded 5 months ago and I have yet to feel any restriction. Do not cancel your appointment, you will eventually get that restriction that we all crave. My doc is very conservitive and when I hear of some people who actually had a partial fill during surgery I get soooooo jealous, but it's an individual thing so I am holding my head up high and be glad that even though I am loosing s l o w l y at least I have not gained anything since being banded.

Why Is this So Hard? Is This Normal At 3 Weeks Post Gastric Sleeve Surgery?
Liliana Arleen posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 3 weeks post op and I been stuck in the same weight 187-188 for a week now. I know is still early but I was losing weight fast before when I was on the liquid diet Now that I started my mushies, I am not losing weight at all Is this normal? I am having my Protein shakes daily and eating my protein first before I try any mashed potatoes or something else. I can eat 2-3 tsp at once for each meal. I am not having Snacks Just my Protein Shakes as snacks and Water. I started going to the gym and just walking in the treadmill for now, I am taking it easy since I am only 3 weeks out. What I can do? I am getting frustrated and I am trying my best not to weight myself daily. PS I know many people asked these questions but I needed to vent- 12 replies

I agree with Alexandra on the water loading thing. I don't feel like water fills up my pouch. It seems to slide right through. Yes, it does quiet my hunger pangs if I'm VERY hungry (although I no longer get hungry to the same degree I did pre-op), but I think I still have the same capacity for eating. But that pouch rules thing is interesting all the same. I find it interesting that it says that pouch size doesn't correlate to weight loss.

All the things you mentioned could cause getting stuck. Eating too fast is a big problem for me. I almost always get stuck if I wait too long to eat, get very hungry, then eat too fast. Bread and tortillas often cause problems for me as well. I can eat chicken breast with no problems, but many bandsters find it to dry and it gets stuck. Try slowing down, chewing better and avoiding these 3 foods until Thursday. If things improve, you can probably get a small fill. If they stay the same, don't get a fill. It is a misconception that being really tight will produce faster weight loss. Many people when they are tight turn to poor food choices like ice cream that actually causes weight gain. Also, being too tight can eventually lead to a slip. If you haven't actually PB'd, I think you just need to slow down and be more careful.

I want to weight under 200 lbs ... I literally cannot remember a time in my life when I weighed less than 200 lbs, so to get to "onederland" is like a dream for me. I have 45 lbs to go to get there.
-
Oh, to have that problem. (Not really). I did lose easily and quickly but when I reached go (8mos) I immediately starting increasing carbs and cals. So I stopped and starting slowly gaining! Lol. I'd take the advice given above. Good luck and congrats on the weight loss!

Yours is not a unique situation, around here they refer to the condition as a FUPA----Fatty Upper Pubic Area, and it is quite common. It loses fat about the same as other areas that you cannot exercise a muscle underneath to tone. Slower, but as you shrink, it will too....some. I lost the bulk of my weight and saw a plastic surgeon---because the vast majority of my weight was in my stomach, and a TT was a dire necessity. At that time, he said he would also do what is called a Mons Lift. When they make the incision to pull the upper stomach down, they make it where they can lipo the pubic mound and pull it up as well. If need be, they often laser hair removal prior to the surgery. I was astounded at the difference it made! My suggestion to you, is to seriously work your band and lose the weight in a healthy fashion, so your body keeps up with the weight loss, and you don't get that droopy skin look. If it is causing you problems now, be it physical, or emotional, bring it up with your Dr. Have it documented. For instance if you get a UTI, ask if it could be affected by the excess skin and fat in the area. Anytime you see the Dr, for anything that is at all weight related, skin rashes under your breasts or pannus (stomach apron) have the Dr. look at it, and document it. This way down the road, if at all possible insurance might cover the surgery. If you wait until you are ready for the surgery, they seldom do. If it is a long term documented health issue, they often will cover.....my TT, lipo, and mons lift was all covered. Til then, it seems your DH loves you......and it is time to learn to love yourself. Maybe instead of concentrating on how it looks or how fat you feel it is.....maybe concentrate on making the sexual encounter GREAT for both of you. That will matter to him much more than if you have a little extra cushion!!! Trust me, I bet this worries you much more than it does him!!! Kat

Who actually feels restriction with no fills yet? I do, I cant eat more than 8oz/1 cup of mushy food..that is truly my limit on a meal..I mean I think I can snack/graze all day if I wanted to (but that wont help in weight loss) but when it comes to an actually meal, a cup or less is generally all I can eat..does anyone else feel the band restriction w/o a fill? My 1st fill is January 15th! So excited!

Remember it is a process...do not expect results within the first few weeks, months even. People get frustrated too early on. The band is adjustable and needs to be before it starts to function the way it was designed to do. Also, as the band gets adjusted, so the patient needs to adjust themselves also...old habits will not co-exist with the changes the band wants to bring. It's easy to blame the band while all along the patient is resisting change. Some people insist on hanging onto old things...things that made them obese in the first place I was very frustrated early on, felt I made a big mistake, especially after all the work and anticipation leading up to surgery... But 4-6 months later...Everything started to fall into place, and it just got easier and easier. Best decision I ever made. Here I am over 5 years later...no excess weight or fat, medical problems reversed, definitely a new person and still going strong! Most of the day I do not even think about it that much. Never had a complication, other than the ones I brought upon myself by eating things I shouldn't.

Thank you both so much. I needed to know that others have this prob, and there is acually a term for it. I know he loves me and I need to start working on my self esteem. It seems to be getting worse. Since I have been going through the 6 month diet I haven't lost but 5 lbs. I do good for a week or so then I start thinking that I will never be able to enjoy my foods again and I start to binge and gain it back. My husband has lost 45lbs and I have lost 5, this makes me angry at him and I know that this is stupid. I am really angry at myself. I have some problems that I need to work on. I am very lucky to have him. We were high school sweethearts and have been together almost 11 yrs. He must be thinking I am loosing it. I have had mood swings like crazy latley. This 6 month wait is just too long. Getting this surgery is all I can think about. I hope I can go back to being my old self once I have a date. I go to the nutritionist Tuesday and to my last dr apt for the 6 month Wednesday, I have already seen the psychiatrist. So I am hoping for 4 to 6 weeks. Wish me luck. I will try to stop ranting now. Thanks

You cant worry about the unknown or about something that hasnt happened...you have to try and remain positive..I know its hard, cause Iv been there...but you need to focus on changing your eating habits and starting new healthier habits now...for me the hardest part was the first 3 -4 months...I went through bandster hell...and there was a time I thought I would never get restriction..I felt like I was just dieting like I always had done and that I spent 15 grand for nothing.....I had to take it day by day...or I would of drove myself crazy with the thoughts. Finally after my 3rd fill I started to get restriction and things began to click. Everyone is different but you have to keep saying to yourself that this will work for me, you have to do what the doctor tells you. start exercising as soon as you can! that made a huge difference with me. I actually did weight watchers for a couple of months in order to help control and track my eating. Hang in there and try not to think about the negative things!! It will only bring you down and question your decision. Worse case scenario this doesnt work for you...than you will have to face that when it happens but not right now!! Good luck!!

Why Is this So Hard? Is This Normal At 3 Weeks Post Gastric Sleeve Surgery?
Lissa replied to Liliana Arleen's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That 3 week stall is a PITA for sure! You are doing everything right and the weight will start coming off again. Look for the NSVs when you hit stalls. My experience has been that I lose inches when I am not losing pounds. You lose weight, then your body has to adjust things before you will lose more. Two weeks ago, I was bouncing up and down the same 5 pounds, but my pants got so loose they fell off. Now I'm losing between half and one pound a day again. It WILL happen and the stall WILL break. -
Any men recently banded?
Vitaminj replied to KDS5000's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks @@KDS5000! It is interesting that my profile doesn't show my weight the day of surgery even though its in my profile. I am down about 4.5 pounds since surgery. I will probably update my profile to give a more accurate number. -
My port is in the same place but the incision has moved about 2.5 inches with weight loss.

I can't believe I'm saying that! I started out 141 pounds above my goal weight and it seemed it would take forever to reach it. Well, here I am, 3 months after the official (when I actually started dieting for pre-op) and I've lost over 50 pounds! It sure makes my goal of losing 141 pounds seem a lot more achievable. It's a lot more than just the LapBand™, it's a change in attitude and lifestyle. I was worried at first that I would miss eating large amounts of food because I really do enjoy eating a lot. I have found that I really don't miss eating big meals because now I enjoy eating, a lot. What a difference a little comma can make! I can still eat some steak or pork chops, just not as much and I have to eat it a lot slower (PB's are no fun), so I enjoy every bite instead of enjoying a lot of bites. I'm not a complete convert though. I still cheat once in a while (in that way I don't feel so deprived) with a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup Blizzard™. I get both of my absolute favorite dieter's failings in one fell swoop! It really is possible to have your cake (or in my case, Reese's Peanut Butter Cup Blizzard™) and eat it too!

Final Appt - what to expect?
pattychat replied to socaldixiegal's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I hope and pray your final appointment wasn't like mine. At my final appointment, 6 days before surgery and one day after my pre-opt, I was told I had to pay the part my insurance didn't pay before surgery. I felt that was unfair so I walked out. Tuesday, Oct. 9th would have been my surgery day so you all PLEASE keep me in mind and pray that I'll find the strength from somewhere else to NOT let my weight control my life anymore. Also pray that Dr. Mejias will see that his policy is wrong, that he will tell people upfront they have to pay what insurance does not pay, and not put anyone else through what I went through. I sacrificised my surgery for a cause I felt strongly about and to send a message.... let's just hope someone hears it. -
I am reading "Weight Loss Surgery with the Adjustable Gastric Band: Everything You Need to Know Before and After Surgery to Lose Weight Successfully", and I am finding it very useful. It is by Dr. Robert Sewell. He is a surgeon that has a practice that handles lap band cases. There is quite a bit of information that was given to me by my doctor, but it is nice having a book to reference. It also has stories and pictures from some of his patients.

To be honest, the "Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies" was very informative, especially if you are just getting started. Has insurance information, diet information, etc.
