Hi everyone, I have been dealing with severe constipation (third week since surgery). I did a bit of research and found something that is actually working for me, it is called Fiberex, it is basically concentrated prune juice with fiber. I tastes like concentrated sweet prune juice. I drink one little scoop (comes with it) in the evening and everything is fine the second day. I do not know if it will work for others but I thought I should let everyone know. Of course, before you start it, please consult your medical professional. I was just sick of taking other pharmaceutical products and tried to find something natural. Also, I put together a list of veggies, legumes that have high amount of protein and that might help you when you start incorporating them in your diet. Please see below. I hope this helps some of you. I Am Not Really Seeing The Weight Loss I Was Expecting

I will add a little math to the equation here: You lost a bunch of weight pre-diet, of which, a very large portion of was water weight. Once you get past that, it can be broken down into a simple calories in - calories out (this is too simplified, but it will get the job done). I went to a website (https://www.garnethealth.org/news/basal-metabolic-rate-calculator) and made some random assumption as your gender/age/etc, and got a resting metabolic rate of just over 3100. Add on another 900 for activities during the day and you are at a nice round 4000 calories burned each day. If your intake is around 600 calories in, then you are at a 3400 calorie deficiency. A pound of fat is roughly 3600 calories, so everyday you should be losing 3400/3600 ~ .95 pounds. So just under a pound a day. That being said, water and other factors can make this fluctuate day to day. Also, all of these numbers are averages and vary from person to person. So if you are noticing less, then maybe your BMR is a little lower than 3100. I was at 307.6 the day of my surgery, and 285.1 3 weeks out or 22.5 pounds down. Since then, I have been consistenly loosing about .6 pounds per day. Not every day, but on average. Stick with the diet your doctor/nutritionist gave you and give it some time. It takes 12-18 months for all of that weight to come off. -

Hi ChewChew! I, too, am told to do the 2 week liquid diet x2 weeks to shrink the liver. They are also doing a liver biopsy on me at that time while my surgeon is there (well, plus I have liver dx.). You're right about everyone having such different plans. Interesting. I wish you all the best! And congratulations to you as well! 💟 -

Hi Aimee! I have surgery one week after you. We have some things in common. I, too, worked in healthcare. I retired from nursing many years ago to get my degree in counseling. So LOTS of research on surgery options...for years. It's finally good to move forward. I have two friends who had the sleeve almost 2 years ago. Watching their incredible journey is inspiring. I start my liquid diet on July 13th (x2 weeks). I'll look forward to hearing about your progress. Feel free to reach out. Hopefully we'll be back here to share our wonderful experience. 😊 I'm excited, too. I'm a young-ish grandma (62), and I'd like to have my health reverse in as many ways as possible. I went into this doing a ton of research. I knew to expect the week 2 or 3 stall. But man does it suck when your experiencing it. I haven't got the scale to move in about six days and it just feels so discouraging. I'm only 16 days out from surgery and I know there's so many new things my body is trying to adjust to. I just feel so bummed right now. All the hormonal changes aren't helping with that either. Ugh I cant wait to get past this little plateau.

I managed to go to a conference all of last week and still have energy to hit the Disney parks in the evenings. I had 20k+ steps every day. I wasn't afraid of not fitting in rides (even the kiddie ones), I didn't feel like people were looking at me and judging me, and I managed to loose a few pounds even with the crappy food provided (kids menu were just fast food and at sit down restaurant massive 4oz of steak, 20 baby potatoes and half a head of broccoli) -
yes it is tough - and I agree with everything Arabesque says. It's a struggle just to maintain my weight (eight years out). I try to eat fiber, healthy fats, and plenty of protein every day to try to keep from getting too hungry (all three are filling). I also keep sugar free popsicles, sugar free Jello, and raw vegetables around (and fruit, too - although that has more calories) so that there are "safer" things to eat if I can't control my hunger. But I know it's still a challenge.

Welcome, @DeeLCee! You made me think. I hope to bypass that buyers remorse and replace it with gratefulness, at least that's what I'm telling myself. But I realize this is all new and we're in the process of changing our mindset. I haven't begun packing up clothes yet. My surgery is in late July. I wasn't planning to discard of my current sizes until after surgery. I imagine myself trying on clothes and hoping they no longer fit,,,and then remove them from my closet. I think that will bring much satisfaction. But that's me. I can also understand the desire to take the time now to clean out the closet. As my surgery date gets closer I may want to start getting rid of things. 🤷♀️ I'm still trying to wrap my mind around smaller sizes. I haven't put too much thought into that since my main motivator is getting the surgery to improve my health. Getting into smaller sizes will certainly be the bonus, and I should start getting excited about that! Those are my thoughts. I wish you all the best on your surgery - you're a week before me. 😊 💟 -
Hi I am three days post op- heading into the fourth. The first 24 hours was rough to be honest. I took hours to come around from being knocked out. I was drugged to the eyeballs which helped a lot. I did regurgitate water for the first 30 hours which was a little frightening and unexpected but was told it was totally normal. I got home yesterday. I was fine moving about and actually drove myself home. I went to bed afterwards a few times as I am still a little tired and not getting a full amount of sleep. Honestly though no pill or drug is as good as the one you get when you walk back through your own door. I’ve seen some people say they feel a bit down afterward. I haven’t had this. I don’t regret this at all. It was a conscious decision for me and my health and honestly I would do it again. I am on two weeks of liquids at the moment and finding it difficult to get most in but doing my best so happy enough. Each day I have improved.

I like Premier banana cream ready made shakes, Premier caffe latte ready made shakes, Fairlife chocolate ready made shakes, Atkins chai ready made shakes, SlimFast mocha cappuccino ready made shakes (all shakes are protein shakes and some also have fiber). I like chicken, beef, and veggie bone broths (and I add corresponding bouillon cubes to deepen flavors). I like sugar free popsicles (tropical flavor). I like the blue protein gatorade. I like Premier peach protein water and also their tropical punch protein water. And I like sugar free protein puddings (specifically banana and chocolate ones). That's going to get me through my 1 week pre-op liquid diet and my 2 week post-op liquid diet (that's how long my doctor has us do it). -

@Neka87 every POUND counts. Be patient with yourself. Im 5 weeks post surgery THANK GOD im doing well. Yes sipping on something warm will make you feel better. I've been doing that since I came home from the hospital & I truly believe that's what helped me GREATLY!

I agree with everyone. Do not reduce your calories. Everyone is supposed to slowly increase their calories as they progress until they reach a point of maintenance. I also suggest you get back in contact with your surgeon & dietician. Personally I think it’s terrible your surgeon or a colleague who does their follow-ups hasn’t seen you since month 3. (I saw my surgeon regularly to begin monthly then two monthly. From 6 months & my goal I had three monthly appointments with his colleague in their rooms. At three years I started 6 monthly appointments.) The other consideration is you may be at your body’s set point. Your goal weight is one you chose not what your body chose. Remember not everyone gets to their goal weight. The average weight loss for sleeve or bypass is about 65% of the weight they are to lose to put them in a healthier weight range. You have already exceeded the average which is fantastic. Also could you update your profile with details of your surgery weight, etc. It helps those of us who respond get a better idea of your situation & offer more appropriate advice & suggestions. -
I've been on metformin 500 mg twice daily for a bit over a year for pre-diabetes. I had some digestion issues at the start for about a week (not unusual with new medications) and even lost about 8 pounds. It's done a good job at keeping my blood sugar closer to normal.

I sure hope so. I read somewhere that it can take a few weeks to see weight loss in some cases cuz your body might need time to adjust. Btw do you think sipping something warm will help you feel better?

Going to a formal wedding in about three weeks & have been worrying about shoes. Sad I know. Wasn’t happy with what I thought I’d go with though gorgeous shoes. I’m wearing a bias cut 1930s influenced gown. At about 12:30 this morning I suddenly remembered I had the perfect shoe & had them for years. I’ll wear them with black micro fishnet hose. My dress. Yes black but look a print. And I have opera length black leather gloves to wear as well.

I’m scheduled for surgery July 3rd,(2023). I am excited and nerves at the same time. I’m on a two week liquid diet to detoxify they tell me.

This sounds exactly how I felt the whole first week after my surgery on June 2. It was so much harder emotionally, mentally, and physically than I was prepared for. I had issues with dehydration/diarrhea, incision area allergic reactions to the liquid bandage stuff they used, it was hard. You will get through it, please just keep that in the back of your mind! I started sipping a little caffeine (some coffee with my protein shake) and it helped me feel a little more like myself. Each day I had a little more energy. Now I feel almost totally normal! It will get better, just hang in there until it does!

I’m so sorry to hear that. It will get better. I had my surgery the same day and that first week was rough. I know that walking really helped me and I got out the house yesterday and went to target. I was wore out later but it felt good. Call a friend. Pick a show to binge, think positive and it will be all worth it. It will get better.

Same! I can drink a lot as well. Last night my husband made soup and I had 2 (small) bowls of the broth and almost a whole sweet potato… I mean it took me almost 1 1/2 - 2 hrs of stopping and drinking but I still feel like I should have felt at least uncomfortable and I was perfectly fine… 2 weeks post op today.

I’m 55 and had sleeve surgery just about 4 weeks ago and have only lost 9 pounds. The dietician says I’m doing everything right and it will happen but I’m so disheartened.

I agree that you should reach out to your surgeon for guidance since they all have different plans and ways to do things. Personally, I think you are not eating enough calories. As per my doctors guideline I was 600-800 calories at 3 months post op. Now I usually do 1000 with exercise and I have not plateau. If I have a slow week is because I did not meet my fluids a day or two of the week, or I consumed too little calories. -

I agree with the person above. Even at 800 cal/day people need to be under medical supervision (which technically we are the first few months after bariatric surgery). And five months is too long for a stall - you're in maintenance, whether intentional or not. How far are you from a normal BMI? The closer you get, the harder it is to lose weight, so that could be what's going on, too. Are you still tracking/logging your intake? -

Structures aren’t that common & not everyone has plastic surgery. I didn’t have a stricture & neither did my three friends (one also in her 50s, one in her 40s & one in her 20s) who had surgery. Only one of us has had plastic surgery - the younger one. She lost more weight than the rest of us. She had it because it was affecting the activity she wanted to do & she was having to buy larger size clothes simply because of the excess skin. They will do cardiac testing before your surgery but make sure you tell your team about your breathing difficulties especially after anaesthetic & maybe ask for some respiratory testing to be done as well. -
Eating Too Fast

You gotta take your time. Five week out (7 weeks for me), we're still learning our new eating habits and what we can tolerate. It's definitely a learning experience. I measure everything - about a quarter cup. I know I can comfortably eat that, so if I do eat too fast, I know I should be okay as far as feeling too full. If I'm still hungry after that, I'll eat a bit more and take my time. Another thing is to CHEW everything as much as you can. I have found that if i dont chew well, I 1. Get full too fast and 2. My stomach is super unhappy. Being over full or stomach upset is miserable after wls. I have learned the stomach is boss. Hopefully, that improves as time goes on.
