How long will I be off of work?
WebNerd11 replied to Pennykay's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had the Gastric sleeve in 2016 and let's just say mistakes were made*, I gained all the weight back. I decided to do a revision surgery to the gastric bypass, so this was a revision surgery and my second one. Fluids are no problem. I drink 2 protein shakes a day, plus water, though i dont think i'm getting 64oz in - but im close. thanks for asking! *absolutely stay away from carbonated drinks and stop before you get full! The new stomach stretches back out so easily. Nobody told me this prior to surgery. -
How long will I be off of work?
ZhivagosGirl replied to Pennykay's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm somewhat better and a little bit better every day. I'm still using pain meds at night for sleeping. I had my first post op check up today - I drove myself. They said everything looked good. The post op pain (pulling/burning) was/is normal for bypass - 1 to 2 more weeks of pain is also normal (according to the doctor). I still have no regrets. I am glad the days I've accomplished are behind me. -
Update On Me (Surgery: 5/19/21)
SummerTimeGirl replied to SummerTimeGirl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Well I had the sleeve so bypass recovery may be different than mine. But overall, I don't think my recovery was long at all. Just the not being able to sleep part was a pain in the butt. LOL But I read how others who had the sleeve were sleeping just fine right after surgery so it truly does vary. And the pain wasn't excruciating or anything. More of an annoyance mostly. As for work, I'm a homemaker/housewife so I didn't need to worry about that. I can say my husband had off like the first 4 days to help me out with the grandkids who I take care of during the day (they also live with us with my son and DIL) and I really didn't need the help. Especially since I tried to be up and walking around as much as possible. About the only thing I needed to worry about was the kids jumping on/near me and not lifting things I shouldn't. Otherwise it was pretty easy. As for vitamins, I still take two Flintstones Complete chewables (as recommended by my doc) but I think when they run out I will switch to something recommended on here (ProCare) that is truly just one a day. Just waiting on my doc office to get back to me with whether or not it's a good one to take and if it meets all the requirements I need. If it's ok, it also will meet my iron and B12 needs so that I will no longer need to take those as extras. I'm trying to get rid of taking as many things as I can/least amount of pills. LOL -
Update On Me (Surgery: 5/19/21)

wow!! thank you for being so detailed. My date is Sep 20, and im so scared of this pain you talked about. Im having Gastric Bypass. Also another thing that really concerns me, is; how much time did you take off work? Im going to submit FMLA paperwork but im guessing 4 weeks? I read all your pages and your recovery has been long, many surprises along the way, so im wondering if 4 weeks isnt enough? I work at home , but very long hours like 11hrs a day sedentary. Please keep updating, what vitamins are you taking? Sent from my SM-G973U using BariatricPal mobile app -
Revision surgery
catwoman7 replied to deannaculp's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
a DS has a sleeved stomach and an intestinal bypass (not a gastric bypass, like the RNY - but intestinal. It bypasses a big chunk of your small intestine). It's the most powerful surgery out there - but not all surgeons do it. Plus converting RNY to DS is a very complicated surgery that few surgeons do - but there a handful who DO do it - like Dr. Rabin and Dr. Keshishian in California. although since you have bad GERD, I'm not sure if this is your best option, since the DS involves a sleeved stomach. Sleeves can often make that worse. But it might be worth talking to a surgeon about. -
So frustrated, 1st appeal denied
Cia2020 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
My surgeon's office appealed with the EXACT same language as the first request to go from VSG to an RNY which was denied. Hello month wasted, of course they would deny it again. What's that line about repeating the same behavior expecting a new result? Sheer laziness! 😡 I'm currently waiting on a call back from the appeals department at my insurance for clarification on one of the points of the revision criteria: Weight loss to 90% or less of ideal body weight If my understanding is correct, since I only lost 27% of my excess body weight and I'm a good 55 pounds from my ideal body weight (not even my goal, but I'm 35 pounds from that too and only lost 24 pounds total) I could be considered for revision. What I find is ridiculous is I have a few cm sliding hiatal hernia visible on my upper GI literally every time I breathe, hiccups countless times a day associated with that, GERD no responding to PPI use resulting in mild (so far) esophagitis, and documented dysphagia just with liquids on a swallow study done plus I've had vomiting with foods like meats that got "stuck" because my esophageal muscles aren't working properly anymore. All of which would be resolved with revision to bypass. Add in I have family history with cancer on both sides, including with my grandad and aunt on my dad's side who had stomach cancer (removed whole stomach) and esophageal cancer (multiple bouts) respectively, and this scares the crap out of me. I don't want to be on a PPI for years, which is not safe, or wait until I have 4 months of documented severe esophagitis that could turn cancerous. Not to mention what this could do to my asthma and high blood pressure during this whole Covid era, neither of which were resolved by the initial surgery either. Why does insurance have to be such a 🤬 ?!! -
I just said "eff it, i'm doin it". So glad i did. The davinci was so easy! No pain at all. It has been a breeze. Now I find myself "wanting" to take walks to lose more. Averaging about 3.5 to 5 miles a day walking, and loving it. Just know the sleeve isn't as restrictive as the bypass. I eat everything I used to, just much smaller amounts. I can't tell you about coffee, because I never drank the stuff to begin with. I live on Gatorade Zero and Water now.

Thinking about Gastric Bypass
GingersnapMI replied to CarolMcca's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Ditto! I chose RNY bypass over sleeve due to: 1) RNY gives slightly better results, statistically, and seems to be more commonly recommended for my age group (I'm 58). 2) I'm a twenty-year GERD sufferer, even when at lower weights. The sleeve can cause/increase GERD symptoms (you will find a fair amount of people here who had revision surgeries from sleeve to bypass due to GERD). I also had an older sibling who was a long-time GERD sufferer and ended up dying at age 61 of esophageal cancer. I decided to take no chances. 3) Bypass is reversible, sleeve is not. (Though there are very few instances when a reversal would actually be needed/done.) 4) I actually wanted the possibility of dumping as a "reminder" to stay on course with proper eating over the years to come. 5) RNY procedure bypasses some of the small intestine which causes mild malabsorption of nutrients/calories. This means that lifetime vitamin use is absolutely necessary (which is also recommended for sleeve recipients) but it also means that occasional digressions from proper eating won't be as detrimental to overall results. -
Six Months out, 113lbs down overall, 75 since surgery, a few questions:
NovaLuna replied to FINFAN3DP's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Congrats on your weight loss so far! You're doing great! 1) Yes, I get hiccups sometimes when I eat too fast. It hurts! 😢 (my surgery has a VSG stomach. Just with the intestinal bypass bit added that makes it the Loop DS) 2) I do stagger sometimes, but I also have arthritis in my knees, hips, and back so I always attribute any staggering to that. But, honestly, you've lost more than 25% of your weight. As the above poster mentioned, your center of gravity may be a bit off and you should be able to adjust over time. 3) Well, I was a 34 in jeans when I was at my highest weight (389 pounds) and my shirts were 6xl. I had clothing from about 15 years before when I was a 26 in jeans and some shirts from high school that ranged from 3xl-4xl so I put off buying clothes for quite a while lol. I went from those 26 jeans straight into an 18 (that I luckily didn't have to buy because my Mom wore this size so she just gave me a few of her pants). I also bought a few xl shirts around that time too. They were all on sale lol. Then I waited and bought 14's when the 18's were sliding off. I also bought a bunch of shirts since I figured I was close to my goal weight at the time so I bought a bunch of larges. I'm now in a size 12 in jeans and wear both medium or large shirts depending on the fit. Personally, I'd say buy a few things off the clearance rack if you can't stand how big your clothes are, but since you'll probably grow out of them pretty fast, don't buy a whole lot. -
Help needed to add another ticker and change surgery status
Katja posted a topic in Website Assistance & Suggestions
Hello Friends! I had a lap band done years ago and have a ticker here showing that and my status as lap band patient. I now have had the revision from lap band to bypass and would like to add a new ticker and change my patient status. Can anyone give me the directions on how to change all this? I can't find it anywhere and don't remember how I did it 14 years ago! If anyone from Bariatric Pal sees this, please include an instructional section to the website. Thanks! -
Some Surprises I didn't expect with WLS
Katja replied to Holodisplay's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm now 3 months post-op. I am having the worst problems with constipation. I have an underachieve thyroid so constipation is a tendency but not like this! I take 2 spoons of fiber at breakfast, try to eat fiber at all 3 meals, take 3 stool softeners after dinner and a 1/2 dose of Miralax before bed. If I take any more laxative I get leakage and my entire intestinal track hurts. The stool softeners give me a belly ache for at least an hour after I take them too. I think I am also losing the natural urge and signals to go. I also get very uncomfortable - bloated, pressure and a funny feeling in my intestines and stomach when I haven't gone for a day. I have made an appointment with a gastroenterologist - maybe they have my answer, but I'm not very hopeful. Has anyone else these problems? Will this ever go away? Will it get better when I can introduce more starches? I don't want to take stool softeners and laxatives the rest of my life! I'm so tired of tummy and intestinal pains.. I am really sorry I had the bypass done, but needed to as my lap band was giving me too many problems... sigh. -

Well, here we go again
Dave In Houston replied to Tufflaw's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
If you have a history of GERD, I would think the surgeon would suggest the gastric bypass. You might want to ask him about that. I first started thinking about weight loss surgery when my voice doc suggested it after I told him I wanted to get off the proton pump meds he had been prescribing for me for 20 years. -
Hi all. I had my consult last week with a surgeon. He is willing to do a bypass, but wants to remove my lap band first - by doing a separate surgery. For those who had a separate lap band removal prior to WLS, I would love to hear from you so that I can know what to expect. My questions are: Was your removal done in an outpatient facility or in a hospital? Was a hospital stay required? How long did the surgery take? What was your experience after the surgery? Lots of pain? How long did it take you to recover? Was your removal covered by insurance even if WLS is not? Thank you in advance for your comments, thoughts, etc.

Surgeon Requiring Separate Surgery for Lap Band Removal Before Bypass
JCF replied to devotion's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had the lapband conversion to gastric bypass in one surgery and was very thankful to have it done that way. To do this, I had to choose a specific surgeon who is capable/specializes in the conversion. However there is always a chance it might turn into two surgeries anyway if is a complicated removal. My lapband was also in for 15 years and unfilled due to issues w it. It turned out it added an hour and a half to surgery as was very embedded. The con of this was recovery was a bear! Because of all the manipulation on the left side to remove lapband I was in very bad pain for weeks and in hospital for 4 days. I am still very thankful it was one surgery and over! I hope this helps. -
Surgeon Requiring Separate Surgery for Lap Band Removal Before Bypass
devotion posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello everyone. I have had a lap band for about 15 years or so and it hasn't been filled in years because of all of the problems I was having. I have recently decided to have a gastric bypass. Saw the surgeon for an initial consult, but he refuses to remove the band and do the bypass in one surgery. He says I have to first have the band removed, then wait however long and then have the bypass. The reason, he says, is that there is a higher risk of complications if the lap band is removed at the time of the bypass. Is he right? I'm wondering if I should get a second opinion. However, I'm self pay for bypass so I don't want to pay for a surgery that could be aborted due to complications, which makes me want to follow his advice (and the lap band removal is covered by insurance). On the other hand, I really want to have the bypass as soon as possible. I know this is a marathon and not a race, but I'm anxious to start my new journey. Does anyone have any experiences, thoughts, etc. they can share regarding these issues? It would be greatly appreciated! -
I can sooo understand and sympathize with you! I have almost exact issue. I’m 54, 5’1”, insulin resistant, was always on restricted calories and barely lost no matter what I did. I started 2 week pre-op liquid diet at 198 lbs. I lost 5 lbs in two weeks of optifast 800 calories only. No cheating. So SW was 193 on 5/27 (Bypass). In this past 2 months I have lost 14 lbs. so now 179. I was having 600 cal of pretty much all protein first month. (70-80) but absolutely no energy! In fact I’d call it fatigue! So no exercise. Nutritionist said for my size I was right on target...nothing wrong. Met w surgeon and he said first month body is whacky and “they don’t actually pay attention to weight loss”. If I I tried upping calories to 700-800 and kept up w that good protein and add some good carbs I should be fine. I have finally gotten some energy back and started walking and bands. But the fact remains...I’ve only lost 14 lbs and trying not to be dejected. I’m soo happy for everyone losing at great rates and having that amazing feeling. I just feel no matter what I do, even having my guts rearranged, I’m doomed. I’ve been scared to get on scale in a week cause it’s so painfully slow and that the surgery may not work on me. This is supposed to be the golden losing period. I worry about after the year is up. Will I be back to same? I keep trying to talk myself off the ledge and just keep chugging and trying my absolute best and think slow and steady wins the race!!! If you’d like to talk more, PM me. Try to be positive and just keep going! Really what choice do we have? Hehe. Thanks for letting me vent.

I had the gastric sleeve surgery on December 21, 2016 and lost over a hundred pounds in about five months, then a few more, bringing me from 315 pre-surgery to 196 at my best. It was amazing, it was like magic. I posted here a lot and my whole story can be found in my profile. Then I had a series of personal setbacks including but not limited to losing my job, having a child diagnosed with a medical issue, starting my own business and then losing my own business. Along the way I have ballooned up to, as of today, 296 pounds. I'm horrified and ashamed of myself. I worked so hard and was doing so well, and I completely blew it. I've been feeling that way for a while, and finally decided to do something about it - I met with my original surgeon today and am officially on board for revision surgery. Under my old insurance I had to wait 6 months from my first consultation, under my new insurance it's only 3 months so he said it should be in early November. He doesn't know which type of revision they will need to do, he said they need to do an endoscopy to see if the original sleeve is still in good condition or if it's stretched out (I think he used the term "dilated"). If it's stretched they can re-sleeve. If it's not they would need to do the bypass. I've had GERD for over 10 years and I've heard the bypass cures it so I wouldn't mind. I know what I need to do because I've done it before. I also know what I need to watch out for because I screwed up before. Part of the pre-surgical requirements is to speak with a psychologist, but I think I'll find one and start going regularly to help me work through a lot of the issues that caused me to be in this position again. I didn't want to have to re-take this journey but I'm excited to be back on the path to recovery.

1 Year Surgiversary! I can't believe it.
STLoser posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I considered wls for many, many years, but never seriously. When I was a new RN in 1997, it was fairly new and I saw people die from it, so I was always scared of it. I also never had insurance that concerned it, so I knew I'd have to pay out of pocket, and I was overall healthy, so I figured I could do it on my own. I had my son in 2010, and that's when I really started to gain a lot of weight. I had done WW before I got pregnant and had lost 45. I was down to 263. After he was born, the weight started piling on. I was sick all the time and got diagnosed with asthma. I was in pain all the time. My liver enzymes increased slowly year by year, until 2020 when my doctor decided I needed to see a liver specialist. That same January, I had my gallbladder removed and that surgeon offered to biopsy my liver and it showed Non-alcoholic Steatohepatitis, with hepatic fibrosis. As a nurse I had seen people die of liver failure and it is awful. This scared me to death. That surgeon recommended wls, and he was one of the only doctors who had ever acted compassionate and non-judgmental about my weight. He told me I had very little chance of losing it and keeping it off on my own. I took his advice and made an appt. That day with a bariatric surgeon. I saw him in March and he recommend gastric bypass. I started getting the required testing and had just had my EGD when the hospital decided to let a bunch of staff go due to COVID. That surgeon was one of them. I decided to go to a different hospital and surgeon and this one recommended Loop DS. I had not heard of it, but he said I was a perfect candidate with a BMI of 69.9 and since I was paying for it myself, as it was a newer procedure that insurance didn't usually cover. I researched it and decided to go with it. My high weight was 393 pounds. I am 5'3". I was 368.8 on the day of my surgery, July 23, 2020. As of today I am 226.4. I never thought I'd be even close to this weight again. I am hoping to lose at least 200 pounds total. I am getting close. I was close to borderline diabetic, had just been diagnosed with hypertension, and had liver disease. I could barely get around or keep up with my active 10 year old son. My hypertension is gone, my blood glucose is normal, and my liver enzymes are now normal, so I have reversed my fatty liver disease. I turn 50 on August 2nd and this will be the best birthday ever! I am so happy I had this surgery! I can't get my befores to post right now but I'll put them here once I do. Here is me today. Sent from my Nokia 7.2 using BariatricPal mobile app -
Pregnancy and Gastric Sleeve
Sleevedupgirl1995 replied to merraculous's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I got sleeved November 2019 never got a period after found out I was pregnant January 2020 I delivered august 2020. From surgery to my due date I lost almost 80lbs then once I delivered I lost another 40 about 2 weeks postpartum. I was scared to see my surgeon when I first found out because he said to wait a year. But everything turned out great and it was my easiest pregnancy. Good luck! -
I knew I would do best with the RNY. My doctor tried to talk me into the sleeve. After the endoscopy he was shocked at how bad the Barrett’s, GERD, hiatal hernia was and agreed that the bypass was best for me! Thanks for starting this thread @TinDe. My date with surgery is August 12, if insurance agrees. I’m a teacher so I’m concerned that the start of school is so close, and I hope I heal enough by that time. I’m more concerned about the insurance to tell you the truth.

13 weeks post sleeve to bypass and have been stalled with weight loss...haven't lost for three weeks. I can't find anything that addresses this type of stall, so here I am! I've lost 35 since revision and was hoping to lose a little more. Having my three-month check up on Tuesday...thanks!

Hello everyone my name is Luna and this is my first time ever on this forum and website. I'll start by saying hello, and I hope all is well with everyone during these difficult times. I am a night shift nurse tech in a hospital. Almost 5 years ago I was 450 pounds. I had gastric bypass and I got down to 170 pounds, which was 20 pounds from my goal weight of 150. Three years post op I began working night shift and I have steadily, over the last three years, gained weight back until i was my highest weight since, of 244 pounds (Two weeks ago) I have since then begun eating better and drinking water and am now down to 234-235ish(it changes from day to day) but I am having such a hard time staying motivated and keeping myself from slipping back into the emotional and stress eating that working night shift and my job brings. I have a short term weight loss goal of 10 more pounds which I have decided I am going to reward myself with a new piercing, and I would like to lose twenty more pounds total before my trip in October, and just be more fit in general, so that my back, feet and ankles dont hurt when i walk around disney as bad this year. Long story short, im pretty depressed about my situation which really causes me to, ya know, stress/emotionally eat things i know I shouldnt, and begin to slip back into my bad ways. Looking for penpals, real life pals, online people I can become friends with to keep me motivated, as my support group is small right now due to the amount of hours i work. Feel free to reach out if this hits home. Maybe we can help each other!

Preparing for Band to Bypass
devotion replied to Ange6012's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Thanks, Sandra! I hope you are doing well. I am glad I'm not the only one. I am self-pay for bypass, but the removal is covered under my insurance thank goodness!
