  1. Hi All, I am almost 6 weeks out from my sleeve surgery and I have a call into my surgeon. From the moment I came home from the hospital, my appetite has steadily diminished. Last week I completely lost my appetite. I have to make myself eat and I usually gag it down. I can barely look at protein drinks and when I try to use them I cannot finish them. I am only meeting about half of my fluid requirement and obviously not meeting my protein goals either. I guess I'm just wondering if this has happened to anyone else. I certainly didn't mind a diminished appetite but the aversion to food is freaking me out a bit. I am hoping my surgeon will be able to shed some light on the subject but I thought I would bring it up here.
  2. Born in Missouri

    Absolutely no appetite.

I had a bypass on June 13, 2018. I have had virtually no appetite since day one. Appetite Zero. I'm not even close to meeting my protein and fluid requirements. Dismal levels of both, really. I probably take in fewer than 250 calories per day as well. This is not on purpose. The only thing I am able to maintain with any regularity is my vitamin regime. And because I have more malabsorption issues as a bypass patient, I take the risk of deficiencies very seriously. Taking vitamins is effortless. Eating not so much. I've been told not to worry, so I am not stewing about my protein, fluid, or calorie deficiencies any longer. I've been assured that this is temporary. How long is temporary? How many more days, weeks, months? My "problem" is not about gagging or restriction or any of the other reasons suggested. It is only my appetite. Food is an afterthought. I only think about it in terms of "I guess I should probably try to eat something today." It's not that I've forgotten the look, taste, and enjoyment I received from certain foods in the past... Chipotle's hard-shell chicken tacos with tomatoes/cilantro, sour cream, and extra cheese come to mind... but I just don't have the craving to follow through with cooking favorite foods or seeking them out (like Chipolte's where my daughter has always offered me with an endless supply of gift cards for an occasional eating-out treat.) I'm a scratch cook. I can cook just about anything I put my mind to... but I have little interest in cooking anything now. I have an empty nest which means fewer mouths to feed. It's just my husband and me, so I mainly cook enough to satisfy his primitive "need to eat", but, for me, it's become a mindless chore and a bore. I have replied to other posts on this forum with pretty much the same words... mainly because very little changes from day to day. I know there are those who struggle with something at the other end of the spectrum: intense hunger. I can understand the frustration with that problem, too. Perhaps I should feel "lucky" that I have no appetite. I don't actually feel lucky, but I'm willing to accept my lack of appetite as temporary and a version of normal.

    LCHF?

I do LCHF. About 50% of my calories come from far, 25% each from carbs and protein and I try to keep carbs under 70 gms since I'm in maintenance. While losing, I kept them under 42 gms. I love it. It keeps me very full and my blood work has been great over the last 15 months since surgery.
  4. I was sleeved Dec 1. I got out Friday from the hospital. They gave me liquid pain meds. I have not taken any today. I usually take it at night so I can sleep easier. Are you able to shower? The warm Water does wonders. My stomach is rumbling too. My surgeon told me to take chewable pepcid twice a day. I can't wait until I can switch to prilosec. I feel hunger today even after I have my Protein shake. I know it is not real hunger, but it is driving me crazy. I can't wait till next week to have cream soups and applesauce. I can also have yoplait whips on full liquids. I know all of this is higher on carbs, but a couple of bites will be nice. I have been thinking about meatballs since I read Tiffykins 18 month post. I also want chili. I font know if anything really helps with the thoughts until we can start eating. At least the thought of greasy food is not appealing. I can't wait until Wednesday do I can have creamed soup!!

    What am I doing wrong?

Hello. I am about 6 weeks post op and have lost 21 lbs. I realize that I am losing slowly but still losing. I have some medical conditions that are contributors to me losing slowly and I am ok with that. It's a process. We will have good weeks and have not so good weeks. Keep your protein and water intake good and maybe start tracking your food. I have started exercising this week and have only done two days, but it's a start. Slow and steady wins the race.

    LCHF?

I follow Atkins. sugar free, low carb, regular, full fat food and drinks, high Protein. I learned from Atkins that often when a food is made low/no fat, they replace the fat with sugar to make it taste good. Compare labels and see. Sugar is my trigger, I must avoid. I've never heard of the diet you describe so I am about to google, lol.

    Kims final swim!

OK , on June 14th I was about 30 pounds out... today on November 7th I am about 10 pounds out... I mentioned I was feeling a little cheatiy...well now I just call it normal life. I watch a little, I have what i want a little, I write it all down, and I lose. Its fantastic. Lately I have added some carbs (90-140 a day) , and calories and it jump started my losing again. I'm up to about 11-1400 cals a day, 60-80 proteins, 4-5 days exercise. Love it.

    Protein Intake

I use the Isopure drinks (40 grams Protein). The punch tastes just like Hi-C, but I dilute it with water. I also crush up some ice in my ninja and add the isopure to the ice...takes on a slushy texture and the taste isn't as strong. I've had no luck with protein shakes/powder either. I'm much to finicky.
  10. I switched from one employer sponsored plan to a different plan choice. I didn't realize that the new company would only cover follow-ups and fills for 1 year after the surgery. Since my new insurer didn't pay for the lap band, I had to fight them to get to pay for my fills for the first year. I am fortunate to work for an employer that offers several options for health plans. During open season for 2014, I will be reviewing my plan choice. DH takes several name brand Rx's and even if I pay out of pocket for fills, we are still ahead because of my current plan's Rx benefits. If they change to a percentage based co-pay for name brands, I will switch back to my original plan.

    eating too much?

I don't and never have counted calories or carbs or fat. For the first few months I just concentrated on water, protein and vitamins. I keep track of my fluids in my head as the day goes on so I know I'm getting 64oz. I have a 30-40g protein smoothie everyday. And other than that it's pretty much like LindafromFlorida said.... I eat when I'm hungry and I eat a healthy, balanced diet of protein, veggies, fruit and whole grains. I am active but I don't exercise. I weigh once a week so I have something to put on my ticker and I never worried about stalls. I'm 17 pounds under my surgeon's goal and 7 under personal goal. I couldn't have asked for a better life. Don't get too hung up on numbers.... Just trust the process and enjoy the NSV's.

    Protein Intake

Try putting your whey protein in soup. I would usually put 1/2 scoop in it. If you are able to eat yogurt, put some in that too. Both of those solutions are what helped me get my protein in for the day. I'm 15 days out and still can't drink the protein shakes either. I've seen where people are taking their protein shakes and freezing them like a fudgesicle. I haven't tried that one yet. Good luck!

    hair loss

My hair is really falling out now. Thank God I have a lot of hair. Has anyone tried something that works for them to keep it from falling out so much. I'm still having 2 protein shakes a day just because I like them and all my vitamins.
  14. What's up guys just throwing it out there that I'm 2 weeks away from my date finally since working towards it since my August '16 seminar. I know everyone's doctors do it a little different but I'm just trying to get the consensus for what you all think my diet is since my paperwork got ruined a while back and I don't get my new one until tomorrow at my pre op appointment. Obviously I know it's no solid food but I should be drinking protein shakes, broth, sugar free popcicles and jello right? I'm doing good on my diet, I'm steadily losing weight here's an update. Liquid Diet starts today!

Yes, I had to do the same. I started a month ago replacing one or even two meals with premier protein. I had to wean myself off of bread & sweets and it took a month to get it out of my system & eventually it stopped my craving for... Wait for it.. Strawberry cheesecake( it was a major sweet tooth). I really didnt know if I could work myself off from it but thank God it worked. I figured I needed not to stop cold turkey but gradually work myself far from it. My pre op diet doesnt officially start until July 3. So, now I know I wont struggle as much because I needed time before I officially start my pre op to get rid of those sweet tooth craving. It takes some self control& praying & motivation & not going grocery shopping when youre hungry. I read about how you should never grocery shop while hungry & I used it & it works. I will continue to use that to help me. This definitely is a process & I knew how bad my sweet tooth was & so I decided to work on a pre- pre op diet to prepare me for my pre op. I lost 10 lbs doing it. I just wished premier protein would be in my pre op since I am using it now. Keep working that pre op. You can do this! You got this !!!!!! Liquid Diet starts today!

Sorry to hear that your struggling. Day 3 and 4 were hard for me mentally. Are you drinking 3 shakes a day? I drink 2 or 3 a day, I seem to alternate. If I drink one at breakfast (early am) then it's 3 but some days I don't have anything until lunch. I rarely eat breakfast - will have to work on that definitely after my surgery. What I have added daily so I make sure I get a min of 70g of protein is Premier Protein Clear, its fruit punch flavored water with 20g of protein. I have to water it down because it's way to sweet, but I sip on it all day at work and alternate with water. I think that and the 90+ ounces of water daily keeps me feeling full. Good luck.

    Liquid Diet starts today!

I'm in the thick of it BMC blogger. In the middle of day 4 of 14 haha it feels like its never gonna end. In my opinion I'll be super hungry and have a protein shake and for about 30 min I'll be satisfied and then about an hour later I'll be hungry again. It sucks but in my mind I would rather be feeling like crap right now before my surgery rather than having to deal with this on top of my surgery. I feel like I'm laying the foundation for the next month where I'm not going to do anything but a liquid diet so that in 10 days when my surgery comes around I'll be somewhat used to this diet and I'll have a better chance for success post op. That's just the way my mind works. But to answer your question with the short answer, the hurdle is both. It's mental in the fact that you want to EAT something, and also physical because you are hungry for food which is normal but your body just isn't used to getting nutrition in this form. If that makes any sense. I'm not an expert I can only speak on the way I feel lol I hope it helps

    Liquid Diet starts today!

Day 1 I was fine. But day 2 & 3 I had mental hunger. I talked myself out of eating fish both nights. I figured if I was going to eat something I would be protein and good for me. Never ate it though and I'm so glad. I had to stay away from the kitchen those evenings. Now I'm on day 7 and I have yet to even start drinking my shakes today. I am drinking so much tap water, I'm not hungry. Be strong, it will be worth it. I haven't done any SF pudding, popsicles, jello etc but all are allowed as snacks. Just shakes, protein water and water for me. You can do it but head hunger is a b*tch!!!

    Long termers...

I have come to the conclusion that the work is never done. I have to "tow the line" most of the time.... but not ALL of the time. I want to eat to deal with stress, and go ahead and do that sometimes. I also have developed some activities that give me the "good feeling" I try to get from eating (and never really lasts more than a minute or two) I find that nature is my salve. I kayak, walk, bird watch, drive around in the country, work in the garden. This does more than almost anything to make me feel better when Im stressed or down. I also dance, which has helped me in many ways... body awareness, fitness, developing a community, confidence... I have worked these things into my week, every week, maybe 4-5 days a week... and I cherish them for all the pleasure and relief they give me. I cook. When I take the responsibility to cook my own food from scratch, some self grown, organic, Vegetarian.... I can take more control over the Protein content, the type of carbs and fats involved... and its an art as well. I share with others. I can my own jams, pickles and such. This eyes open involvement in the process helps me to really enjoy my food, and bring it to a level that reveres the taste and textures and where the food comes from, and all those complexities involved. I like to think about and experience food... but when I engage with food unconsciously, like I'm taking a drug or something.... and look for satisfaction... its not there. i try to be grateful.... its satisfying. Meeting and talking to people here can be satisfying. I learn so much here, I gain how to be myself better, How to relax and move forward to find answers, to sit with failure and see how it is a learning experience... to get back on track without self hate. I still have not really dealt with the "fat me". I look at photos of myself in wonder. I feel so sorry for her... its hard to take to heart that its me. I was so unhappy with my looks then... I really felt I was such a failure in that area. I was so successful in many ways except that one. I was brave then, and tried many things... I dieted, exercised, tried so many approaches to getting my body the way I wanted it to be, but none of them really worked. It felt like a curse. I am so grateful that I am still close to goal (surgery over 3 1/2 years ago), and seem to have a set of skills to stay there... although I know that could change.
  21. My surgery is on February 25th. I was put on a high protein diet, to shrink the liver for surgery on February 15 when the surgery was scheduled. I have lost 8 pounds since I started the pre-op diet. I was not given a certain amount of weight to lost but just told that the weight loss would shrink the liver and make the surgery easier.
  22. It took me until my 3rd fill to keep me from feeling the crave all the time. I am at 5cc's right now. Most of the time I am full for about 3-4 hours, just depends on how much protein I get of the morning. Plus the heat outside seems to make my band feel tighter as well. Just portion your food out, eat your protein first and go from there. Unless I do that, it's really hard for me to know I am doing everything right and helps me determine if I need another fill or not. Good luck to you.

    Smoking / Drinking

I would avoid both at that point. Youy stomach incision will be barely healed at that point and the alcohol can be very detrimental to your new, healing stomach, and cigarettes actually impede healing. So the reasons to avoid so soon out are really to avoid leaks and ulcers rather than the usual "empty calories/not good for you" reasons. I had my first wine at 3 1/2 months out and it really didn't affect me at all. But, if you really feel like indulging on the 15, I would maybe experiment in the safety of your own home beforehand to make sure the alcohol or cigarettes don't make you hurl or something. As for non-Water things to drink, I used Mio and Dasani flavor drops, drink dilute organic juices, Propel Zero, Sobe Lifewater, K2O, and Vitamin Water. And of course lots of Protein drinks.
  24. Thanks. I am on the pre-op 14 day shakes from New Directions and it sits in my mouth and I have a hard time swallowing it - this is pre-surgery lol. I found that Muscle Milk isn't banana cream that you get in the grocery store milk area is about the same and I bought one and had that for lunch. I have 10 more days of this and since I'm not liking it, it's going to be rough. Luckily after surgery I can go back to Pure Protein 100% Whey Protein, but I was thinking of trying GNC's unflavored one to add to things like instant mashed potatoes & Cream of Wheat for the mushy phase!

    Cruise dining

I went on an Alaskan cruise before I had my surgery and lost weight as there was more Protein, fruits and veggies and I didn't have to prepare food. I'm sure they will do smaller plates for you. We ate Breakfast from the buffet as well as lunch so I could sample more things and determine my own servings. I sure didn't starve!! Not sure if that is a help, but some ideas.
