And Now The Waiting Game
lizv123 replied to Shelli_d's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh yay, we're together!! My 6 months was up on the 6th of November and I have Anthem, too. The waiting is killer! Let's keep in touch!! -
I was actually approved for November! I was sleeved 11/4. Because my clinic is out of network, I had to pay upfront and will be getting money back but am still waiting to see how much they pay. I'll update when I know exactly how much I was out of pocket!

Sleeve or mini gastric bypass
elcee replied to KelseySig's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
From what I have read the mini bypass also has an increased risk of reflux. RNY is generally regarded as the best option for reflux although it's still not 100% -
So I'm new here. I had gastric bypass surgery on February 7th 2012. I had decided about a year prior that it was the best decision for me. At that point in my life I had attempted every type of weight loss aside from illegal drugs or starving myself. I was a gym addict. Portion controlled. No snacking. I was seeing a dietician. I had been checked multiple times to see if there was anything health wise that was hindering my weight loss. Nothing. Couldn't lose a pound. So at age 23 and 311 lbs. I had RNY. It was difficult at first. I remember the miserable feeling when I woke up that next day. The first time I tried to eat something my stomach didn't agree with post surgery. But I knew I would be a happier me after all was said and done. I struggle with depression still. Not from the surgery but just in general. So it hasn't been easy for me. But now, here I am, 4.5 years later and I've hit a plateau at 180lbs. I'm me. More me than I've ever been before. I work my butt off. I hike and swim. Practically lived in a bikini all summer when I wasn't at work. I'm at the gym religiously. I eat right and take my vitamins. The worst part still is meeting someone. My self esteem didn't change with the weight loss. I had dated someone for 6 years up until a year or so after I had the surgery and it ended suddenly. I've dated on and off since then but I struggle. So I'd like to meet someone who is on the same playing field as me. Someone who understands the emotions and struggle associated with this new lifestyle. Just looking for a friend.

Sleeve or mini gastric bypass
Ed_NW replied to KelseySig's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Hopefully you have a good program that educates you about the different options. You should along with your surgeon be able to make a choice that best suits your medical needs. I had a class that I had to attend to start things off that gave me two options, sleeve or gastric bypass. The surgeon spoke to the class with illustrations on a projector and took questions about both procedures. I then went home and started a 6 month diet that was laid out in detail by a nutritionist. During the 6 months before my face to face with the surgeon, I had lots of time to think about the pros and cons of both surgeries. During the 6 month diet, I would become dead set on the sleeve then read or hear something that changed my mind and I would start feeling like the bypass was the best choice. It kept going like that for about 2 or 3 months until I watched so many YouTube videos and read so many articles and forums that I decided on the bypass. Whatever you do, make sure you go into this educated and you are not pushed into making a decision based only on what one doctor says. I don't know if it will happen but I would like to go the rest of my life without another major surgery. I was determined to get this right the first time. Take it slow, do your homework and make sure you are putting your trust in a reputable center of excellence. -

Hi everyone! I have been lurking around many WLS sites for months, this is my first time posting. I'm having the Roux n Y bypass on March 12th. I can't believe how close it is! I'm getting nervous, but I'm far more excited than I am nervous. A little about me...I'm 37 single mom of a 12yr old boy and 2yr old girl. I have struggled with my weight pretty much since I can remember. However it has really spiraled out of control these last 10 years. I'm 5'2 and a 1/2 (lol) and 270lbs. I'm looking forward to a much more active lifestyle, I have a long list of "first's" to complete. Most importantly I want to be a better example to my children, as well as be able to physically enjoy time with them outdoors etc.. -

Hi Everyone, I live in North Ga. I went to Dr Daly at Northside. I was banded on July 2nd. The Hospital stay was great and they also have a support group there. I just love Dr Daly. He did my Mom's bypass surgery 8 years ago so I did not want to go to anyone else.

RNY Revision issue anyone?
iamworthit replied to QbnMomof3's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
15 since august 15th seems pretty good to me. I was revised from band to bypass on june 12th and have lost 26 since. I would expect slower results with a revision at least that's what I was told. Good luck with everything! -
My friend has N.A.S.H. it has somthing to do with sorisis (sp) of the liver, from either drinking or being overweight. In her cause it was overweight, and had got to the point to where it couldn't be corrected, but by losing weight it wouldn't get worse. She had gastric bypass last year and is doing great.

6 days post op gurgle
Frustr8 replied to ifishedmywish's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well,I am a bypass, don't think we gurgle as much, I could be wrong, I am only A week, out and just got, promoted to Stage 3 ( Hurray for Me) . What I got and I think it's equally weird, I was told since I was doing well , I was longer bound to an ounce a time on fluids, first time I tried 2 ounces I got,a swoosh, rather felt like the vacuum sounded when it picked up one of the cats soft play balls. So I guess,my stoma is patent like it should be, but it sure felt FUNNY -
Hi, all. I've finally reached my breaking point. I've done the Weight Watchers thing and regained the weight (more than once). I'm sure a lot of you know that old, sad story. My brother had gastric bypass; no way am I going there, but I've had my initial appointments/counseling about banding. I'm not sure whether to tell a lot of people. I'm inclined to not go there; I hate the judgmental looks/snarky comments. Funny, though, I did tell my boss, who is also a friend. When I did, her eyes lit up; she's considering it, too. I know my future holds diabetes, hypetension...I want to get a handle on it now while I'm still just a cranky, but fairly healthy, middle-aged woman rather than becoming a sick, feeble, bitter old woman. I'll have to self-pay. I'm not quite "fat" enough, and it seems silly to eat even more to reach the magic 40 BMI. Plus my insurance only does bypass, not banding. So, I'm a newby and looking forward to the advice and support I can get from y'all. I have one question for those of you who've done it and are into the normal eating part of it. How do you manage the work-related food functions and lunches w/ the office gang? How did you get over the "clean plate club" mentality? OK, that's two questions, but you know what I mean. Thanks. Kat

The only option: Revision sleeve to bypass!
mocha2871@yahoo.com posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had my sleeve surgery in 2013 and have had GERD 6 months after the surgery. I have been on omeprazole for 7 yrs. I went from 40 mg once a day to twice a day. My surgeon now feels that a revision is necessary to resolve this issue. I just meet with him on 10/14 and I am scheduled for surgery for 11/19 upon approval from my insurance company. I will have the revision and repair the hiatal hernia I have too. I did not think it would be this soon. I'm a little worried but looking forward to not having to worry about taking these pills and the effects if I dont. Alot of my family does not know I had the sleeve so now Im concerned about Thanksgiving when I will still be on pureed foods. Not sure what I will do but just praying all works out well. At OCC - lots of waiting
SoCalDixieGal replied to SoCalDixieGal's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Yeah, I kinda figured they'd time manage the patients better. But I guess things can change based on how folks medically stack out. There are a few here not in the best health today. I've all by electronic toys spread around me so I'm content. There is one girl who is shocking the other patients. She's thin. I thought she was here for plastics but nope sleeve. Although I heard revision but it's not band. She really looks great. The other patients are doing eye rolls but heck, we don't know her story. I didn't want to pry and ask so we've chatted about other things. Perhaps a bypass to sleeve revision? Is that even possible? -
I have UHC. It was a very simple process. Took about 10 days to get my approval once everything was submitted. I didn't have to take any health/nutriton classes. I had my very first consult with the lapband doctor on Sept 26, 2009 and had surgery November 1,2009. I only had to submit a referral from my primary MD because my BMI was lower than the "required" 40. Hope all goes well for both of you

No one really gets it

I am also 22 and had gastric sleeve on April 5th. I actually posted concerns like this on here about a month ago but have had not one complication since my surgery. The only thing that happened after was I threw up from all the pain meds and anaistesia. I don't do well with pain meds. I will be straight honest with you that it will be a very big challenge for you in the beginning but I am 3 months out and struggled terribly in after but am now doing better and do not regret my decision. I did horribly the first couple months but I truly know I would of ate myself to death if I did not choose this option. The struggle is all mental and I still deal with anxiety and depression but I have always had it but masked it with food. I am now forced to face my demons head on and not hide behind food but I feel like that I really did need that. I have lost 35 pounds so far and already have so much more energy and no pain in my back and neck. It will be scary at first but I promise you will make it through. 4 members of my family had gastric bypass and are 10 years out with no complications. If you ever need someone to talk to you can message me ❤ Sent from my 0PM92 using the BariatricPal App -
No Special Pre-Op Diet?
Jengo825 replied to Johnnyrud's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just had a Lapband revision to Gastric Bypass on July 5th. I was not required to do the diet beforehand. At first I thought it was strange but figure it was because I did not regain my Lapband weight loss and have been doing low carb for about 18 months. He said day before surgery, have a very light breakfast, lunch, and only clear liquids after noon. Nothing to eat or drink after midnight. -
I'm quite the baker, but thankfully I prefer the act of giving away baked goods rather than eating them myself. I might have a spoonful of dough on a particularly tasty recipe, but that's about it. My sister, on the other hand... well let's just say she's eaten more dough than actual Cookies. (She's now had a bypass and is doing better!)

I cant stop thinkng about it.
mrs kaje replied to Chelsea E's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm envious - I have a whole year to wait! In Australia there is a 12 month waiting period (for major things) when you get health insurance, so I was going to just pay for the procedure using my superannuation. But the surgeon said he has a six month waiting list to do it, so I figured I may as well wait the extra six months and get it mostly paid for by the health fund. I first rang in October and couldn't get into a seminar until 27 November; I then booked by first consultation with a couple of surgeons and those appointments are in February and March next year, as that was the earliest they had available. I'm obsessed at the moment but I'll get over it in a few months, then the time will probably go quickly (at least I hope it does!). -
Can you be to overweight for lap band
YouGotBiggie replied to catherinecon's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I started out at 440lbs, Most people still don't believe I was that big, I am 6'1' so I carried the weight well. My Surgeon wanted me to get down to 400lbs before he would operate. It took me a month and a half to get there but I got the surgery. I was Banded September of last year and after a few months of maintaining, I have started to see the weight come down. It took me a little longer to get restricted because my port flipped in November and I couldn't get in to fix it until January. I have since lost another 30lbs. As long as the Morbid Obese realize that it is going to take longer and also that it is a learning experience then we should do fine. My family always ask me if I can eat certain foods and my stock answer is, I don't Know but I can give it a try. -
Stopped taking Metformin -- signs of low blood sugar
MKinVA replied to MsC's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have Type 2 diabetes as well. I remember seeing an interview on 60 Minutes a couple years ago where they were interviewing a group of people who had gastric bypass surgery. They mentioned that one of the effects of bariatric surgery was immediate "curing" of diabetes. It seems that the removal of the lower portion of the stomach causes a hormonal change which has a positive effect on blood sugar and how your body processes it. I think I am remembering correctly. -
I'm considering having gastric sleeve surgery
FishingNurse replied to laiovyn's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was scared of the malabsorption with the gastric bypass, and I didn't want a foreign object in my body that could corrode my stomach like the band. I think I would have definately lost more with the Gastric Bypass but over all I am very happy with my results. I am about 3 years out from VSG. -
Hi. I'm in the UK too and up until this morning, I was having my band removed and a sleeve performed on 10/10. However, I've now decided to go for the bypass - same date, one day after you. Let me know how you go.

Hello uk sleever .. Will do and please keep me updated on how you get on too its nice to have someone going roughly down the same path as me ..what made you opt for the full bypass instead of just the sleeve ? .
