    Newby with questions

I wasn't allowed to lift more than 10 pounds for 6 weeks. If people notice your eating habits have changed, just tell them you are just watching what you eat. My husband was definately against a bypass for me, but was very supportive of the band. Get your husband educated. Best of luck.

    Questions to Ask Before Surgery?

I’m sorry I just realized you are getting bypass. I was sleeve. I guess you could ask about the length of your bypass. if you have a choice in that.

I want to know your story!

Good morning everyone, My name is Robin Bartlett. I had gastric bypass surgery in 2002. Currently, I am completing my graduate degree in counseling psychology and am doing a study of the lived experiences of women who have undergone bariatric surgery. If you’re interested in participating, please send me a private message so I can give you more details about the study and the interview. Thank you for your time and consideration!
  4. Dumping is a term used for gastric bypass patients at least that is what my nutritionist told me. It's when gastric bypass patients eat to much sugar and their intestine cannot tolerate it so they end up sick, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea all that.

    June 22nd

I'm still pre op as well and trying to decide between sleeve and bypass too. My surgeon was no help to me as he thinks either procedure will work well for me. What do you mean by "People can go off a little mentally with bypass?" Sent from my SM-G925T using the BariatricPal App Like crazy. They're not sure why but it has happened. Not really frequent and it stands out for me because I have a depression and anxiety diagnosis so that's how it came up for me. Sent from my SM-G935P using the BariatricPal App Oh ok...well thanks for the clarification. I guess this just reinforces the fact that I need to make finding the right therapista high priority for post op life. Sent from my SM-G925T using the BariatricPal App Good idea I can't, He can, I'll let Him
  6. I need some advice... I had my Endoscopy on Friday. For quite some time I've been experiencing nausea and occasional dry heavie'ness. My G.I. tract tends to be a bit sensitive and a bout bronchitis back in November and the subsequent round of antibiotics seem to have set it off, and I have been having ulcer like symptoms. Before I left my doctors office, I was given the report his findings: my esophagus looked fine (yay!); however, I have a erosive gastritis, of which he took several biopsies; he removed a polyp, which will also be biopsied; and finally, he took a biopsy specific to check for celiac. My concern is the erosive gastritis. I'm hoping that it will not prevent me from having surgery. Has anyone else had experience with this? Thanks for your input!

    Hello

I have the typical story...got preg and married at an early age..of course it didnt work out so 1 son and 2 miscarriges later I was starting over. I started to lose weight then got remarried and bam here comes another baby I have gained 130 pounds since high school and I am beyond sick of looking at it. I have been remarried for 8 years now and am the happiest i have ever been except my weight. I have looked into the lap bad along with gastric, sleeve and many other options. I am confident that lap band is the safest and best for me so after years of researching and wanting I am finally doing it!! November will change the rest of my life. I want to be able to go to my kids school and eat lunch with them without worrying that the kids in their class is going to make fun of them for have a "fat mom". I am scared, nervous, happy and excited all at the same time. The "what ifs are playing in the back of my head..what if I dont lose anything...what if i have a bad reaction to it..what if someone finds out that i am doing this (no i have not told a single sole except my husband for fear of being judged)... So wish me luck that i can get more sleep and that this WILL work
  8. My doctor refused to remove my healthy gallbladder during the sleeve surgery. ....I asked her to, but she stated insurance would not pay for it. I also asked her to put me on Actigall and she refused, stating I didn't need it and it was mainly for bypass patients. If I get an attack, I will be pissed off and would find another surgeon if I needed surgery. I was psyched about my surgeon in the beginning, but has since "fallen out of love" with her. I feel she is only interested in the results her "procedure" brings, and not in the process of the actual journey I'm on to get the results. At my three month visit I realized I just didn't like her. Sad face..... sorry for the mini rant.

    Second Guessing Myself

anxiety before surgeries (any surgery) is pretty common...I always freak out before any surgery I've had. And they've all gone off without a hitch. first, morbidity rates on weight loss surgeries are really low. It's 0.3% for bypass, even lower for sleeve (not sure the exact percentage for sleeve since I had the bypass - but sleeve is lower). So there's a 99.7% chance (or greater) that you're NOT going to die - and those are excellent odds! Even better than hip replacement surgeries, which people get all the time. Weight loss surgeries have improved tremendousy over the years and they're no longer the scary, risky things they used to be. They've really become pretty routine at this point. I don't think most surgeons use catheters for weight loss surgeries, because unless you have other issues going on in there that they have to deal with, the surgeries are short. My bypass took a little over an hour - sleeve surgeries are typically even shorter. I DID have a catheter for two of my plastic surgeries, but then I was under for over four hours with those. The catheter wasn't any big deal - but no, most of us don't have one for weight loss surgery. the surgery won't fail as long as you follow the rules and guidelines. It'll work like a charm. But you do need to get the binge eating under control, because that could sabotage your efforts. They'll probably have you meet with a psychologist prior to surgery (that's very common...), but you may want to continue meeting with a therapist even after that because the binge eating WILL hinder your results if you can't get on top of it. Many of us have worked with therapists and found it very helpful. I can't speak to the being too young part, since I had surgery at age 55 - but like others, my only regret is that I didn't have it sooner.

    Tired of it!!

I understand this as well. At times I wish I had not told anyone except my immediately family about having surgery. People do watch you like a hawk. I've gotten so when people ask me how much I've lost, I tell them. Then I also tell them that it is not like gastric bypass surgery. It is much slower and safer. Then they usually act like embarassed and it shuts them up.

    Kaiser Wls Patients

I did sleeve with Kaiser. No it will not un qualify you. I asked the same question. Had to lose 20lbs. pre surgery. Lost 26lbs. They go by original weight. Good luck. I just hit my goal of 175 from 297. I love my sleeve and have had NO problems. I don't even notice I had surgery except for the amount of food I can eat is so little. Just what I needed. I love the fact that sleeve lets you eat anything you want. The portions was my problem and now it is solved. Bypass surgery restricts you from Dairy and sugers . Not to mention ALL the problems they seem to have after surgery. I think Sleeve is the BEST option out there, Best of luck to you and your new Life/figure/. LOL!

    Newly Single Mom

It's scary for me too. My son will be two in April. My divorce was finalized in December and I had my bypass in January. Everything happened so close together. But you just have to stay positive and know that life will work out the way it's supposed to. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  13. Hi guys. Guess I'll start by introducing myself. I'm a norwegian male, 39 years old, married, father of two kids, and are working as a Engineering manager in the oil industry here on the west coast of Norway. I'm one and a half week away from undergoing gastric bypass, and are in the final pre op diet. So far I have lost 13 kg since i started the diet, and needed to loose 7,5 kg so are in good shape. So how did I end up here?. I have always been heavy set, and spent my teens and early 20 playing ice hockey, power lifting and martial art. I went to serve in the Norwegian army, and served for three years, before I went to college studying engineering. I was used to eat large portions , but kept the kilos away, due to the simple fact that worked my ass of as a soldier. That kinda changed when i started studying for twelve hours a day. Then the kilos crept on, and they haven't left me since. I steadily gained weight. I tried everything to loose the weight. Low carb diet, calorie counting, nutrition shakes, you name it, I've tried it. Lost weight but it came back, plus interest. So a couple of years ago, I got diabetes 2. That was the last drop. I realised that i needed, help, and went to my primary physician. He agreed that Gastric bypass would be the best solution for me, and referred me to the hospital for evaluation. The whole process took about a year, and I'm as I said one and a half week away from my surgery. 21 of oct is the date.

    Can you start over?

You can definitely start over! I did after about the same amount of time as you! I was banded 5/07 and initially lost 40 pounds. Then I had 2 surgeries about 1 year apart and totally fell off the wagon. I gained all the weight back (plus some). Finally I made the decision to call and schedule a fill. That was 6 weeks ago and I have recommited to the band and now track every ounce of food in and excercise more. Over the past 6 weeks I have lost 28 pounds. I am so glad that I started over, even though my family members were all convinced that the band was not working. Realize that it is not the band that's not working -- it's YOU! Once you get back on track, you will feel better and your confidence will rise. Call and make an appointment for a fill. My surgeon said that he thinks it is time to talk about bypass but I said that I was ready to work the program now and give me a chance. I went back and he said that he was glad I was working it now. You can do it!!

    Would you do it again?

If I had to go back, the only difference would be I would get the surgery that shapes your stomach like a banana, more invasive then the band, less invastive then bypass. But I would get surgery of ANY type- and would have done it sooner!!!

    Revision

I'm right there with you. waiting on a surgery date right now. I am on Dexilant, Protonix, carafate and Zantac Athough it may seem impossible, my reflux NEVER EVER stops. It is worse at times than others; eating is hell. Scared to death of bypass but I don't have any choice at this point. I had Bravo testing done and my DeeMeester score was 85.5. Anything over 14.72 indicates reflux so mine is really high. In the words of my surgeon "if acid were cancer, yours would be a stage 4."

    Revision

Yikes! So sorry to hear that and i really feel for you. I can relate to you w/all the surgeries, as this will be my 5th one in 3 years. Most recent was gallbladder, which was a breeze for me, but I also had an open hernia surgery in June 2017 that gave me a lot of problems. I see why you said that you're scared of the bypass, if that's what my resolution will be, then I think I will have that same feeling...among other feelings. Mainly, one more surgery to get through just sounds exhausting. The whole entire process, including more medical bills and stress on an already stressed body. Ah, well, now I am just complaining. Something tells me that you understand though. It is like you said, sounds like you don't have much of a choice other than to go the revision route. Yes, I will let you know what the doc says. Let me know when you get a surgery date as well and take care until then!

    Dumping?

I don't mean this offensively, but you are reading completely incorrect information. The Lap Band doesn't cause dumping because our stomachs are fully intact and our intestines aren't rerouted. Dumping is common with Gastric Bypass because the intestines are rerouted, resulting in the rapid passage of undigested food into them. This isn't the case with the band and it's not a side effect of the band. Perhaps you're confusing Gastric Bypass with Gastric Banding, I don't know, but whatever you're reading is completely incorrect.
  21. My surgeon also recommended bypass, which was actually my first choice. His reasons were simply that the bypass is sort of the gold standard for WLS because it's been around so long it has proven its success, whereas the sleeve is promising but just hasn't been around quite as long. I wanted bypass, because I actually wanted dumping syndrome because I was afraid without it I would sabotage myself and eat sugery/fatty foods till I gain weight back. But my surgeon said that he could only do the bypass if it was safe to do so, once he opened me up. He said there may be a lot of scar tissue, and if there is, he won't do a bypass because he wouldn't risk my health (whether I want bypass or not). When I woke up from surgery and learned I had the sleeve, I was devastated actually. He explained to me that my stomach was a mess from the band--prolapsed and pouch dilated and erosion and all those things that tend to go wrong with the band--and VSG was the safest thing he could do. And though I was EXTREMELY disappointed at the time, so far I'm very happy with the sleeve! I'm only 7 weeks post-op, but already I can eat a better variety of foods than I could with the band. The sleeve is exactly what I wanted: let me eat whatever I want, but just stop me after a small portion. So if you want that piece of birthday cake with your son, the sleeve is the way to go. I must admit, it's actually a relief to not have to worry about dumping, and be able to enjoy those kinds of treats on special occasions. I'm like you, and wonder if a little bit is a healthy, balanced, joyful, part of life! As long as it's not excessive and preventing you from maintaining a healthy weight. I think it's great that you're consulting with two different surgeons. Get both opinions, maybe even a third if you're still confused. And then do what YOU feel is right, for YOU. Good luck!!
  22. This happened to me - 1st surgeon i went to told me that since i failed at the band i would fail at the sleeve. I went down the path of the bypass, researched, started the preop process and just decided it isn't what I wanted. I went to a surgeon who believed in the sleeve, even for "failures like me". I have had what i think is remarkable success for a revisionista, but i know that not everyone has this happen.

    Sleeve with high bmi

At the top of this page click on Resources - Information - Which surgery is right for me. Then at the bottom of the page you can click for extending to the rest of the article about the different kinds of surgery. As for me, I did not want a bypass because I did not want to re-route my plumbing. I did not want a band because I did not want a port on my abdomen. So I chose the sleeve and am happy with the result so far. At ten months out I have had no dumping, no more reflux and sleep a lot better. I think it awesome that you are doing your home work. I wish you good luck and good health.
  24. Lots more money made on the gastric bypass. Hate to say it but it is.. Mr Dr said pick whichever you like.. I was gonna do the band but decided on the sleeve.

    Sleeve with high bmi

@@Miss Mac - I was the same. I didn't want to do the Bypass and reroute my plumbing. I was also told the band was the least successful and many end up having it replaced with the sleeve. I hope everyone does their own homework and decides what works best for them.
