  1. Adjustable gastric banding is much more effective long-term than a very low-calorie diet for people who are about 50 pounds overweight, a study shows. Medical guidelines support this surgical procedure — which puts a band around the top of stomach to create a feeling of fullness — in patients who are extremely obese, about 100 or more pounds over a healthy weight, or those who are almost as overweight and have serious medical conditions, such as type 2 diabetes. Researchers at Monash University Medical School in Melbourne, Australia, recruited 80 patients who were on average 52 pounds over a healthy weight. Half had the laparoscopic adjustable gastric band surgery. The other half followed a medical program that included a variety of strategies such as a very-low-calorie diet (500 calories a day) with liquid meal replacements, prescription weight-loss medication and behavioral therapies. Findings in today's Annals of Internal Medicine: • After six months, both the surgery patients and the low-calorie dieters lost an average of 14% of their starting weight. • After two years, the gastric band patients lost 22% of their starting weight. That was about 87% of their excess weight, or roughly 45 pounds. They also showed marked improvement in their health and quality of life. • At the end of two years, the dieters had regained much of their lost weight but were still 5.5% below their starting weight. They had lost 22% of their excess weight, or about 12 pounds. Researchers are still analyzing the weight-loss data. "I'm very happy that the gastric band patients are continuing to maintain their weight loss," says lead author Paul O'Brien, director of the university's Centre for Obesity Research and Education. Since the study, he received grants from INAMED Health, maker of the LAP-BAND System. In this study, the surgery was as safe as the diet program, but O'Brien notes the procedure does carry risks, and some may need follow-up procedures, such as readjusting the band position. The surgery costs $14,000 to $18,000 in the USA, he says. Insurance companies vary widely in coverage of gastric banding or gastric bypass, a more complex surgery that creates a much smaller stomach and rearranges the small intestine. Average cost: $26,000. Under certain conditions, Medicare covers both surgeries.

Post-Op 2 weeks and having complications

Thank you for the responses. I thought I'd stop in and give you an update. Her doctor did drain the area (he got 9 or tem huge syringes full of yellow fluid out). There was another area that was not liquified, he is planning on trying again next week. She did seem to brighten up after and was moving around a lot better after that. Mom slept in her bed for the first time a few days later, and the pressure of laying on her side made the area start leaking- ALL OVER THE PLACE! It was really disgusting and she, we both, freaked out. We called the doctor and went back in to see him the next day. He's concerned. He said if it doesn't stop leaking and look much better next week, he'll need to remove the port. He'd leave the band and tubing in- remove the port for a few months then reinsert it. The thought of more surgery scares me, but mom says shes in... She's invested this much this far... I like mom's surgeon very much. He's thoughtful and checks in on her often by phone. He's was the only surgeon willing to take on mom. She 60 years old and a revision from the intestinal bypass days of the 70's. We knew she was high risk, and she is having the complications that come along with that. I'm not however impressed with the facility he practices at. She had surgery the day of that awful storm here in St. Louis, the hospital's electricity went out for 10 hours AND the generator failed for about 15 minutes. Rain poured in around the window in her room, we had to move in the dark. It was bedlam, and our nurse did not handle it well. Very stressful. The thought of another stay there is an unpleasant one. I hesitate to name mom's surgeon, mom and I both feel he's very competent. I would hate for anyone to associate her condition with his skills in the OR or otherwise. This forum, I'm sure, is frequented by his patients and colleagues. Thanks again for your replies. Rebekah
  3. I was approved through Aetna today. Scheduled for November 9th!
  4. Hello everyone. I have had a lap band for about 15 years or so and it hasn't been filled in years because of all of the problems I was having. I have recently decided to have a gastric bypass. Saw the surgeon for an initial consult, but he refuses to remove the band and do the bypass in one surgery. He says I have to first have the band removed, then wait however long and then have the bypass. The reason, he says, is that there is a higher risk of complications if the lap band is removed at the time of the bypass. Is he right? I'm wondering if I should get a second opinion. However, I'm self pay for bypass so I don't want to pay for a surgery that could be aborted due to complications, which makes me want to follow his advice (and the lap band removal is covered by insurance). On the other hand, I really want to have the bypass as soon as possible. I know this is a marathon and not a race, but I'm anxious to start my new journey. Does anyone have any experiences, thoughts, etc. they can share regarding these issues? It would be greatly appreciated!
  5. File under the heading of no sh*t Sherlock. Though they refer to the band and bypass as the primary WLS's performed it is a logical conclusion that you should wait 12-18 months post-op to try and have a baby. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-20979355
  6. Was this her initial gastric bypass or a revision type surgery, I'm a bit confused.
  7. Wow! this sounds fantastic. I read about it too, but felt a little bit bad that i bet the surgery will be great but insurance won't cover it. i think it took a really long time till they would even pay for lap bands! they wanted everyone to be stuck with bypass surgery. i hope things move quicker with new operations!

    Jealous

Hi Solla: Be patient, and remember 1-2 pounds is what to expect with banding. Sure some people will lose more than this and some will lose less, but this is truly the average and it is a good healthy weight loss. We all need to remember that we did not get this heavy over night. And the weight will not come off like that either. I was told prior to my surgery by my surgeon that if I wanted immediate results that bypass would give that to me where Lap Band would be a slow but steady process. Your skin has time to recover with slow and steady. Therefore allowing it to not be so saggy. Just stick to the program and eating only healthy choices and excersie regularly and you will be a huge success I am certain of it. For me it is the long term that is my goal and I set mini goals for myself. Like hitting the next 10 marker. I am 4 pouns away from my second goal after surgery the 30# marker. Then it is not so overwhelming. When I look at it that way it makes the final goal more real for me. Remember you are retraining years and years of overeating and of making the wrong food choices and this takes time not only to achieve but also for our bodies to catch up. We are retraining our metabolisms as well. Your body will get the message and know it is not starving. I would recommend using something like FITDAY.com to log all of what goes into your mouth each and everyday. This will help you to eat between 1000 and 1200 calories a day which is what my nutritionist said the goal should be. I have trouble getting that much but I am losing very nicely I feel. Always eat your Protein first at every meal as well. YOU CAN DO THIS and YOU WILL succeed! Hugz,

    Frustration

When my weight stalled, my NP suggested one day of higher calorie/good fats (avocado, olive oil) - no processed or forbidden foods. Then back to a regular WLS diet. It seemed to work - my weight dropped a couple of days later after a 4 week stall. I had RNY and while agree with Ladybandito on nearly every point, I have been advised not to go longer than 3 hours between meals/snacks (I'm on a 6 times a day routine - 3 small meals and 2-3 healthy snacks). Maybe a difference between lap band and gastric bypass? I also hear a lot of talk on this website about the 5:2 diet (5 days of normal eating followed by 2 days of "fasting") but I haven't needed to get that extreme yet.
  10. Hey y'all! I'm starting my sleeve journey hopefully by the end of next month (June 2016). I've been overweight the majority of my life and am finally ready to be comfortable in my skin again. I'll be a self pay so everything is moving very quickly for me. I had my initial consult Wednesday, May 25th. During the consultation I learned the differences between the band, the sleeve, and the bypass and opted for the sleeve. I felt the sleeve would be the safest bet for me. I have a blood clotting disorder (Factor 5 Leiden) and had to schedule an appointment with a hematologist to get the all clear for surgery. That appointment is scheduled for June 7th along with my nutrition class. The nutrition class will cover the post op diet along with do's and don't's. Once I get the all clear from the hematologist, it should be smooth sailing. I was told I would be scheduled within one to two weeks after my hematologist appointment. I'm currently at 223 and my goal weight is 140. I'm so ready for this journey! I'll be updating my journal along the way. If you'll be having your surgery near the end of June please let me know so we can support each other! Just for fun, a friend of mine who is a photographer will be doing a before photo shoot in a week and an after photo shoot a year from now. I have also been stocking up on the cutest drinkware I can find in the hopes that if I can make the liquid diet fun it might be easier. I want to make it all as positive as I can. I apologize if I rambled, but I want to be able to look back and remember all the details. I'll be sure to post throughout my procedure and will check in with progress along the way. Much love from Alabama! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  11. So, I was banded 7/2008, got pregnant in 8/08. Didn't "use" band until my daughter was born, so first fill was in May 09. In November 09 started having bad symptoms - food coming out onto pillow when I slept at night. So, I guess you'd say severe regurgitation. I thought it was just part of being banded. Well needless to say I let my symptoms go and go and finally went in to see my doctor in March, he took some fluid out of the band, went back again in April and he took some more fluid out of the band, had an upper GI, scheduled a band revision for yesterday and low and behold I HAD A HIATAL HERNIA......please if you have any wierd symptoms like I did go and see your doctor don't wait. Ugg...
  12. I'm not a person to take risks and all I'm saying is, really; for me, going to Mexico is too risky. And expensive, out of pocket which is not an option for me right now. I'm half Hispanic/native American, I'm afraid they wouldn't let me leave. LOL And I'd get picked on for not speaking spanish. (no, i'm not illegal) But anyways, I was just stating an opinion. There's so many loops that we have to get thru for the insurance and surgeon and I don't mind them because I know I'll be ready. For example, Kaiser requires a full psych evaluation and group/individual sessions. I like that. Being able to vent to a psych who specializes in bariatric patients and has probably seen it all, is very comforting to me. CUZ I'm scared! I want to do it but I'm so scared about the surgical complications, not being able to stay away from my old eating habits, or gaining it back. There's a whole team I'm accountable to; dieticion, nutritionist, a nurse who calls me periodically to check in, the pshychologist and the surgeon. I was born with no thyroid so having this team, for me, is what I feel I need. I'm sure it's not everyone's preference. I was dead set against this surgery til a few months ago. Actually, I was set against the gastric bypass but then they told me about the sleeve and I jumped on board. I've watched so many youtube videos of people who have had the courage to do this and they inspired me. As for the money, I know they all make a mint, here and all over the world.
  13. Sasicas, I will never be ready to eat small amounts of food. I can never do it on my own. I will be having open surgery anyway, with them repairing my hernias, so as the surgeons said.....lets just do it once and for all and get it over with. I know I will be neurotic. It will be major, major for me, but I am at that point in life where I feel like im literally going to die and something needs to be done! I keep having hernias which get stuck, then winds up to be a bowel obstructions and they cant go in anymore. I have no muscle left holding anything together inside. If I have this surgery, and make it out alive, I will have no choice but to do it. Im not doing it any other way. Iit's very scary, as im sure we all experienced. My sister had the gastric bypass 5 yrs ago, and claims she is eating as she used to pre-op....so, I know its alllllll in the head, and I know there is no going back. I also know it didnt quite hit me totally yet!!! Anyway, thanks so much for sharing. You r so right in what ur saying, and I realize it has to be a 100 % commitment! Keep up the good work and thanks for all the thoughts and info

    lightweights around 200 pounds

I am also glad to have come across this post. I will be losing my band in 2 wks. Dr. said that I need to convert to "sleeve or by pass" b/c I still have diabetes and H/P. My weight is 212 right now. I started at 248 4 yrs ago with the band that has to go now. I am worried about doing either one. I have now ruled out the bypass. After reviewing these posts and seeing that there are others out there in my shoes, I believe the sleeve is the way for me. Thanks

    Newbie in Dallas

I live in Mansfield, near Arlington. Just had gastric bypass on Aug. 5th. I know it's not Dallas, but close enough right? I don't know a lot yet but I'd be happy to share what I do know. Which surgery are you going to have and when?

Help Calories, Carb and Fat Intake

The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. Weight loss is achieved after surgery through volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as Protein shakes. So essentially, the approach is not counting calories, carbs and fats during the "Weight Loss" phase. Eventually after several months you will slide into the "Maintenance" phase, and the approach in that phase is different and you can go back to counting calories, carbs and fats.

    Help from new bands, please

I had my surgery on September 1st and so far have lost a little over 30 pounds (pre surgery diet included). I'm finding that with every little bit I lose I can move more freely - are you finding that yet? I think a big part of the weight loss is from being able to be more active - what you eat and the caloric intake is just part of the equation. Also - a friend of mine who had gastric bypass was putting back on a lot of weight and her doctor told her to cut out the liquid calories - ie. coffee drinks. It sounds like you're very conscientious about your caloric intake but in case this is something you've overlooked, worth cutting out or cutting back on. And one last note of encouragement - if it comes off a bit slower it will stay off longer, right?
  18. Kristen: Welcome, I'm from Ct, too. We have a Ct group on the forum. Connecticut - Lap Band Talk Forum - The largest forum for Lap Band Surgery Discussion and Lap Band Surgery Support We are close to the same height and starting weight, but I'm twice your age! I was banded end of November and have lost slow but regularly. I did not have to do a liquid pre-op diet. I do not have good restriction yet, so continuing to lose is taking a lot of willpower ( which is fading). What part of CT are you in?

    Feeling Defeated...

i had surgery in 2009 started off fine lost 40 lbs within the first 4 months i was excited! in Novemeber of 2009 i moved to nyc (from MA) i lost insurance and everything went down hill! i stayed steady at my weight 230. Got my insurance and looked for a new DR and no one wanted "someone elses bander" in March of 2010 i found out i was Pregnant Gained normal pregnancy weight climbed to 260. The last filled i recieved was in december of 2009.During my pregnancy i wasnt unfilled. December 2010 i gave birth to my first child healthy little girl!! Finally in January after complaining of having trouble eating i was referred to a DR that would take me. She Did a swallow study and it showed that i have a dialated esophogus =0( i was never treated for my lapband during my pregnancy. i have about 4cc's in my band that i learned to eat around. Im not gaining besides the weight i gained while pregnant but not loosing either. After 3 years in nyc i decided to move back to MA and am going to see my DR who banded me on April 19th. Im ready to do what needs to be done i admit i cheated alot but have cut that out and started making healthier choices. In ny i was offered the option of switching to another form of surgery which i objected to. i love my band and it worked for me i guess im just wondering if theres any one out there who has dealt with or is dealing with this similiar dilemma? IS another surgery (bypass) the only option?! I feel like a failure and feel ashamed that i have failed my lapband by neglecting it. please feel free to get in contact with me i could use a buddy or two!

    need suggestions on fill

Oh and I dont' know how much you have lost, but remember, the lap band goes much slower than bypass. My doc says that 50 pounds in one year is what he hopes to see patients get to. So if you are anywhere around 25 pounds lost than you are on track. Also, tell us what you are doing and maybe we can give you some pointers.

    Banded 1/18.....2 questions

I was banded in November, and remember every single bit that you are going through. The shoulder pain is probably from gas. Mine seemed to move around alot and finally went away about midway of the second week. The gurgling, it's probably not as loud and you imagine, but you are more alert on the sips you are taking. But yes, It seemed loud and awkward to me too. Congrats on the progress of your journey!!!! John
  22. I had colectomy for the whole colon and I got approve for bypass next month. I talk to my surgeon and he said YES of course $$$ for them. Anyways I want to know if anyone else had the same both procedure done and what are the drawbacks and complications. Thanks

    Monthly Weigh-In

Month of November - minus 7.1 lbs.
  25. Hey, I was banded July 31st I was the same way as you september-november...I just went up and down 3-4lbs...than I got my 3rd fill at the very end of november and had good retriction for 2 weeks and dropped 8lbs but now Im back to losing and gaining 2lbs..havnt lost any since the second week of december. I lost alot of weight the first month which gave me a nice boost but its alot slower than I thought. I am even going to the gym 3x a week and trying to watch what I eat. I think exercise is the key to be honest...especially when you dont have alot of restriction...I have my next fill in 2 days and I am hoping that helps me lose some more weight again...I think you already know your answer about what you need to do...but if you need someone to talk to ...just message me and we can exchange email or whatever works for you. I could always use someone to talk to when times get rough and someone to share the good stuff too! Hang in there and try to keep postive and change some of your ways by adding exericse in!
