  1. Banded in Boston

Wednesday is the day -1st fill

I was banded on 12/27.. Since then I have kept off 15 lbs but it is a struggle I am up and down a few pounds weekly , I feel like a roller coaster . I am as hungry as I was before the surgery but used weight watchers to keep on board and use less points as what I would normally do . so I am looking forward to this week . I however have had sticking already which I dont understand , Yes , perhaps I have eaten too fast and swallowed to quick without chewing , then again is that normal ? Rice , Toast , Some chicken .. it varies . vomiting is no fun and I am glad I know what it is like to "stick" I am just hoping that something isnt wrong . So , I am waiting for the "non" hunger and then satisfied on a small amount to find me and reduce me to smaller sizes while learning . Any suggestions ? Ideas ? How long before I see weight loss ? I am scared because I have been up and down for 6 weeks . Thanks and Happy Valentines day to all !!

    I need HELP...

Your surgeon should be able to direct you to a nutritionist (if he doesn't have one already that he works with) Barring that, if you want more structure, WW is a good weight loss program (and they offer 2 different diets now, I think)

    Celebrating a few small victories

My small victories: Getting over the fear of getting close to 199. AND Turning my power walk into a jog. One day, my power walk will be a 100% walk, just like I did before I gained all this weight. (I feel powerful when i jog for miles)

Telling people about the Lap Band

That's a tricky one. I think anyone has the right to remain private about their surgery, if they want to. But if it's a (potential) loved one you're talking about, you should probably tell him about it, if only in the name of "full disclosure." He needs to understand that you struggled with weight issues for a long time, and finally decided you needed some help losing the weight permanently. And it's working well for you. Explain that you're very private about it, so want to keep it just to yourselves, but that you wanted him to know the whole story, so he wouldn't think you had some sort of eating disorder. Good luck! Dave

  6. I read the thread about who has their gall bladders versus who doesn't, and I just don't get it. WHY do so many people have gall bladder troubles? Does it flare up with lots of weight loss? Thanks sara
  7. untfluter

    WHY gall bladder trouble??

It is very common w/significant weight loss to have your gall bladder go bad... so much so that there are a lot of surgeons who will take it out when they do your procedure to keep you from having to have an additional surgery should it go bad. Fortunately I had mine out years ago so I didn't have to worry about it...

    GRRR ettint Frustrated

I seen your thread and I understand how you feel. I was you 2 years ago. We actually have almost the same starting weight and goal as each other. I was one of the slow losers. I even stopped coming to this website cuz i was so frustrated at how everyone was speeding past me. Well, here is the benifit that you may not have considered. I have NO extra skin anywhere. I don't need a tummy tuck, arms done, hip or thighs, butt, or lipo. EVERYTHING is exactly were it should be. Well, I can't lie, my chest will never be the same, nothing a good bra can't fix though. Some of the fast losers are still trying to get rid of the last few pounds just as I am. It all seems to even out by the time you are 2 years out. I know that it sounds like a long time and truthfully sometimes it feels like it, but it is well worth it to me. Stick with what you know you need to do (exercise & eating right) and your body will respond. YOU CAN DO IT! It sounds like you can tell by the amount of exercise you can now do that your body is responding. BE PROUD. We like to have everyone notice our work and be able to see it on our body, it will come. Remember even if it takes 2 yrs. you have a lifetime after that to be told how FABULOUS you look. And I am confident you will look FABULOUS! GOOD LUCK!

    exercising

My doctor cleared me for whatever exercise I wanted 2 weeks post op. I've been doing boot camp 1-3x/week since, and I go fishing at least every two weeks. I've started doing a little yoga, and I've been using my Wii Fit Plus now that I under the weight limit on the balance board (yay!) Be well…
  10. I got my band in 2006. And I did really well and lost 100lbs. I still had about 75lbs to go. Then in November of 2007 I got pregnant! I actually lost weight during my pregnancy and 6 weeks after my son was born I was down 10lbs. Then I started gaining weight so I went to get a fill. My Dr. told me I had a slip but gave me a fill anyways. I had terrible heartburn for about 2 weeks but then I was back to eating normal. It did not fill like I had any resistance at all. My son is now 22 months old and I have gained 40lbs in the last 2 years. I went back to the Dr to have another fill and was told I had to have the slip fixed first. My insurance did not pay for my band and it does not pay for my fills. I contacted them about my slip and they will not pay for that either. I can't afford to pay for surgery again but I also can't afford to continue to gain weight. I am getting really depressed about the whole situation. I worked really hard to lose the weight and now I am gaining it all again! Does anyone have any suggestions?
  11. hello folks! my husband and i will be traveling to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia soon to meet the baby girl we are adopting. my doctor and i are considering unfilling my band for the trip for a couple of reasons...1.) the high possibility of getting sick and throwing up, which could cause a slip. 2.) medical professionals there have no idea what to do with the band, so if i were to having problems, i'd be out of luck with getting help. has anyone else done this while traveling? does the hunger come of fast? i have 6 cc in a 10 cc band and have lost just over 80 lbs. i'm scared of gaining weight, but near as scared as what could happen in Ethiopia with my band if i got sick. any advice is greatly appreciated!

    jogging didn't hurt!

Good for you! Isn't it a great feeling? I just started running in February. At first just knowing that I COULD run was enough to make me want to do it--now I actually enjoy the running, too. You're doing this the healthy way--not waiting to lose weight before starting an exercise program. You might want to check out Jeff Galloway's book, Running: Getting Started. I found it helpful as a beginner. Way to go!

How do you know you need a 1st fill?

It's a combination of things 1) are you losing weight (no, fill might be the key) 2) do you feel satiated between meals for at least 3 hr (if not, fill make be necessary) 3) are you eating large volumes (ideally no more than 1 cup) (if yes, there may be inadequate restriction - fill time) 4) are you having symptoms (frequent regurgitation, acid reflux etc) if so fill is not warranted Your doc takes all this into account and will advise you on what is appropriate. Also, even if a fill is warranted how much volume is also up for debate.
  14. Hi, I was banded in Jan 19th, 2009. I was doing really good and lost 71lbs by my bandiversary, but I got sick. The weight lifting and exercising i was doing tightened my band by itself to the point I couldn't even get liquids down. In Jan this year my dr. unfilled my band so that we could start readjusting it. My life got complicated and I never went back in for the readjustment in Feb. I had noticed that some of my weight has came back on, so I made an appt to see my dr asap. I went Thursday 08/12/10 to get my fill. I found out i had put back on 41lbs of the 70 that i lost. I don't know how I let myself go backwards so much. Right now my dr has my band tightened so i can only get down my shakes, but I am already feeling like hope is lost. Has anyone gone through this? :cursing:

What is correct for me? Need advice

At 5'9" 160 pounds this seems just right. 1200 calories is low enough to continue to lose weight. If you can try to stay at this caloric intake(or of course more). Glad that you are on the road to recovery.

    Newbie question

i dont think they do anything you just maintain your weight from then on.
  17. Chickie

    Newbie question

I had a total unfill because I couldn't stop losing. I have now maintained with an empty band for 19 months now. But that's just me. Most people need to maintain their fill level to maintain their weight.
  18. I was banded in Dec, lost 48 up until April or so and then only 5 pounds over the next 1 1/2 months so, I went in for a fill last Tues. As always, my surgeon is fairly aggressive so I got .5 cc. Now I have lost 1.5 (!!) pounds a day (!!) since Tuesday. So, 7.5 since Tuesday! Should I call the doctor. I can keep some food down, can drink smoothies and nuts and am exploring what else I can eat. I am comfortable but eating very little.
  19. Somebody help define this for me. When somebody says they have lost x% of their excess...does "excess" just mean the pounds that put you out of the BMI normal category? Or does "excess" mean everything you want to lose? Because, for instance, I have lost 81% of the weight that puts me out of "normal" for my BMI. But I've only lost 58% of what I'm wanting to lose. But I have chosen a number that puts me at a relatively low BMI in the "normal" range. If I wanted to settle at the highest number that would make me "normal," then I could say I've lost 100% of my excess when I hit that number rather than saying I've only lost 72%. Does what I'm saying make sense? I'm just wondering what the stats are based on when they say patients lose x% of their excess weight. My surgeon never set a goal for me. I don't remember if I was asked what I wanted to get to. I think they'd be satisfied with "healthy." LOL

    CRAZZZZY! (about diet)

I do the same. I am not on a 'diet' as such - I wanted the band so I could get away from obsessing about diets. But while I am still a 'newbie' I have been watching my calories and try to keep it around 1000 - 1200. This also helps to tell me if I need more fill. Don't obsess about the weight loss it will come once you start getting your fills - just use the time till then to heal and experiment.

    Grits

ewww with sugar?? no, no, no. you eat them with butter & a pinch of salt. Or maybe some cheese or red-eye gravy. To the Aussie: do you have Polenta down-under? It's the same thing. As another poster said, do take it easy with grits, they're not weight loss friendly, they're ground corn and corn is a high glycemic food (ie, it tends to spike your blood sugar and then when the bld sugar levels drop.. you get hungry again faster). In general, grits are not high protein. However, if you add some cheese (preferably 2% or even lower fat), then you will get some protein. Pre-banding I LOVED my grits. Nothing better with eggs & sausage in the morning..or with fried catfish at night. Now I rarely eat them. They are a treat rather than an everyday food. Here's some info on a brand I sometimes buy. If I'm gonna indulge, I want the good stuff. With cool weather coming on, it might be time to have a little. I think it's been 6 months or more since I had any. 22. This is my first post ever, I've been a lurker. I'm feeling like I haven't made the best use of my band. I was banded May 2006 and have, in general, been successful. I've lost 85 lbs. The problem is this, I'm a horrible eater. I guess in the last 2 and a half years I've figured out that ice cream never gets stuck, therefore I eat ice cream almost daily. I use the excuse that I can't eat much of anything else. That's a lie, of course. I've become lactose intolerant since banding... so the ice cream kinda comes right back out... I think thats the only reason I haven't gained the weight back. Help! I want to get back on track!!! Currently, I weigh 193. My goal is 150. I want someone to be accountable to and vice versa. Even though I'm struggling with my eating habits or really, its a eating disorder, I think I can be supportive of other banders too. My eating is emotionally based, I need to remember that and stop reaching for the ice cream instead of dealing with my anger, fear, depression, etc. A little about me, I'm 39... almost 40, ugh. I live in South Saint Paul, MN. I work fulltime in adult mental health. Also, I'm currently attending college to get my Master's degree in Social Work. I have 3 daughters, twins that are 18... their out living on their own and my youngest is 5, she just started Kindergarten. I'm married and we enjoy boating, camping, etc.
  23. The detailed description you gave of your Father with respect to how he regards women is answer enough. If appearance is the most important attraction and feature of a woman to him.....then would his support be genuine....or just as shallow as his regard towards women? Only you know that answer for sure. There could be many different reasons that you are losing weight.......does he, or any one else really need to know which method is working for you.....quite frankly, its no one's business but your's. I understand the need to share your experience with someone, or a small network of support individuals who you can express your excitement, your highs and lows, etc........be very selective and choose to tell only those who will be there for you in a strong positive way for the long haul. For those who you wish not to know but ask questions and comment....just tell them that you are working very hard at being careful and sensible with your eating habits and make it clear that you are living this minute by minute every day and don't wish to dwell on it...end of conversation........they don't need to know anymore than that. Good Luck Carol

    Another Newbie

Welcome! I was just banded on Tuesday, June 8th. This website is amazing. It helps me get my mind on my goals and is inspiring. I feel so relieved to know I have this tool that will help me get the weight off and stay off! Good luck with your tonsil surgery!! Ashly
  25. Just curious how many of you have lost a bunch of weight and kept it off for a good bit of time. What is your maintenance plan like?? Congrats to everyone who has lost and kept it off. I expect the maintenance to go fairly well and I have about 35lbs more till I will be on maintenance. I can't wait.
