    Change of Heart

I've been looking into Gastric Bypass or Lap Band for the last 2+ years. I finally decided to pull the trigger. I was 110% focused on having lap band. Yesterday, I went in for my first consult with the surgeon, nutritionist, and dietician...and by the time I left I had completely changed my mind and decided on Gastric Bypass. I'm not usually so wishy-washy with big decisions like that. The only thing from holding me back before was the fact that there is a national average mortality rate of 1 in 200. That seems like a LOT to me. While I realize that a lot of surgeries probably carry that same mortality rate -- it still just kept me from wanting gastric bypass. I was very pleased to find out that my surgeon's entire practice has only lost 5 people in 9 years. All of those were due to that patient's own health problems that were not directly related to surgery. SOOO, with all of that being said - at this point I'm just waiting for my pre-op appointment and prior approval. There is a tentative surgery date of Dec 21!! :frown:  Words can not even express my excitement. I don't know why I put this off so long but I do know that 12-18 months from now, I'm going to be 100 times healthier. I aspire to be one of those skinny bitches I hate so much Anyway, thanks for reading for those that have. I just wanted to share my story so far! Soon, you'll be seeing a lot more (or rather LESS) of me as I'm sure I'll have a million questions I didn't think to ask before the surgery.

    Sleeve or Bypass?

I had the sleeve in 2014, didn't loose as much as I would of liked...an gained the weight back. So right now I'm 7 days post opp the gastric bypass. I think it's easier to "cheat" if you have the sleeve.. But talk to your surgeon.

    Sleeve or Bypass?

@ - Thank you! I'm just happy not to have any sagging skin on my face. I hope my body follows suit. @@mayasmomma - I am not anti-bypass. In fact the friend who recommended my surgeon had the bypass and has been very successful on it. She is 2 years post op and maintaining well. What I am saying is there really is a choice sleeve or bypass. Do your homework about pros, cons etc.... and take into consideration your own body makeup and needs before you make a decision.
  4. I found this website that has great information about sleeve vs. a bypass. This is only a guide and for information gathering only. https://www.obesitycoverage.com/gastric-bypass-vs-gastric-sleeve-surgery/
  5. I have chronic acid reflex and I have a hernia the surgeon wanted to remove the hernia and do the sleeve so that after surgery the heart burn that comes with the sleeve wont be even worse, but after my endoscopy the acid in my stomach is so much worse they don't think the repair of the hernia would do much so the bypass would be best for me I currently take up to 4 40mg of nexium a day to get by with heart burn
  6. Yesterday was my last weight in and the doctor called to say bypass would be best for me now so it has been submitted to my ins just waiting now

    Revision journey

Glad to hear your story. I am going to Mexico next month for my revision. I have not had the issues you had with your band, simply because about 4 years ago I had all the Fluid taken out. After fighting with fills, vomiting, etc. for 3 years, I just gave up. It sounds like you have been through hell. Hoping I don't have the thing embedded in my stomach. I have no pain or anything, so we'll see. Please keep updating your progress. I have a month to go, and am interested in your journey. I am taking a month off work (I'm self employed), so hoping that will be enough to heal before working again.

    Bypass scheduled for Aug 6

Hi there! My gastric bypass is August 13th. My hubby went first (April) so I've got a pretty good idea what I'm in for. His recovery has been pretty uneventful. I just want it over and done with and hope mine goes just as smoothly.
  9. I spoke with him and he said that since i don't have it frequently and its a good sign that my reflux went away after pregnancy. He looked at my upper GI and it said no reflux was indicated during the procedure so he thinks the sleeve would be the best option for me. That when I lose weight it will also relieve more pressure off my stomach and its even lesser percentage that i would develop it. So I'm gonna stick with the sleeve and like he said if it gets bad we can always do the bypass. Sent from my SM-G965U using BariatricPal mobile app
  10. Hi. This is all new to me & I’m glad you’re all here to reach out to. I’m having gastric bypass in October & must also have lap band removed. Any body have that sitch? Any complications or problems?
  11. I just recently told my mother and she had a fit at first. But the I had to explain that it was not the gastric bypass . My husband has been soooo supportive and telling me how much better I'm going to feel . My mom is going to my preop appt to my surgeon with me . I just have her permission to tell my dad n ordered h to keep his mouth shut because he is a gossip box. Andy oldest sister just dropped the phone when I told her. Funny !! She said if anybody has researched this , u have. I'm not telling coworkers because the talk n can b caddy. Not even my best friends.. I'm just gone say I changed my eating n got a personal trainer. Which wll b true. They don't need to know right now. Sometimes ppl act funny knowing u r making better changes in your life . Ppl get scared that you will no longer be the fat girl in the group ??????©???®???‚! Well So long to being a fat girl !
  12. I was nervous about telling my husband about it at first, but I asked him to come to the orientation meeting with me and he was good after that. I just wanted him to be able to ask the questions he wanted answers to right then because he always thinks of questions I don't have :-) After, he told me I should do it if it was what I wanted to do, he wasn't going to make the decision for me. He has been my biggest supporter through the whole process. At work, we have someone who has had gastric bypass so that's a conversation we are used to. I told my close friends at work as i was going through the approval process and they were all very supportive. After that, I didn't tell anyone else in my family until insurance approved it. Surprisingly the overwhelming response from all was that they were proud of and excited for me. Now, a week and a half post surgery, I tell people as it comes up. I've found it's easier to tell the truth (when I'm drinking a shake for lunch at a birthday party rather than pizza) than to lie. I'm so excited about it that I think even if my friends disagree with it they don't show it :-)
  13. Not finding anything specific unfortunately, at least nothing "new" or recent (or clearly outlined). Rebound rates aside, if you've got a slight reflux now, it will be amplified with the sleeve and reduced with the Bypass, based simply on what the surgery does. And in the off chance that you end up with a major problem... there is no going back after the sleeve, 90% of your stomach is rotting in medical waste somewhere (or been incinerated), with the bypass, everything (for the most part) is all still in there. The sleeve is ONLY a restrictive surgery, there isn't any reduction in caloric intake caused by the surgery itself outside of forcing you to reduce your intake, but then there are all the "slider" foods etc. I made the mistake of choosing the lapband back in 2011 because I was under-educated about the bypass, and well, I didn't want to make any permanent changes, which is ironic, because, I didn't get any permanent weight loss. So, second surgery to remove the band and revise to the bypass in March and I really couldn't be happier... I really do wish I went with the bypass from the get go. A personal (in real life) friend of mine had the sleeve, and he's getting it revised to the bypass because of the lack of progress. Just things to be aware of.
  14. Are you having the sleeve 4 bypass Sent from my SM-S727VL using BariatricPal mobile app
  15. My surgeon does not require a pre-op diet. is this normal? it seems everyone is on some type of liquid diet prior to surgery. Thoughts? P.S. I have a slipped lapland and is being converted to bypass, not sure if that makes a difference. Thanks, Maggie

    The Honeymoon is Over

YES IT WORKS!! NO, it's NOT magic! Comon guys--remember the ol' "tool" jazz. Is it easier to pound in a nail with a hammer or with a rock? With a hammer of course--but you STILL have to POUND! I am relatively new to the band, but in my experience life is consistent. There certainly are people who have gastric bypass and gain weight back. Do you seriously think you can get rid of the fat demon forever? I believe with all my heart you CAN win the war--but don't think for a second there won't be lots of battles! Thinking the band will do it all, or gastric bypass, or lipo or phen/fen or whatever is just setting you up to let your guard down when the demon raises its head. IT WILL. Get READY for those times! By being here DeLarla's enlisting help in her battle--and thereby all of our battles. You never know what one thing you might read herr will get you out of that "I've gotta eat!" struggle. This band is a great opportunity. Please overcome your fear and grab it for all you're worth--but steel yourself to WORK at it and come here and share your failures and your successes and Celebrate everyone of them! You COULD fail--but there is a VERY GOOD chance you CAN SUCCEED! ANd what the heck would it be worth if it were easy? Sorry....hope I don't sound like I'm preaching. I've just been around for awhile and I've seen what works and what doesn't. And work is what it takes--and sometimes there is incredible joy in that.
  17. LMAO Thanks BJean even though I never thought of myself as uppity or superior.I often find myself in a pickle because I come in and smack them old Bitches around for picky on the newbies, seriously I don't care how long you have been banded you just have one band or in rare instance you may have needed revision and had a two or three,my point is this your band and your weight loss experience means little to me and my journey the same as averages. We are all unique in our own way,and if you are having a moment and you come in here hungry and feeling let down by your band or your doctor we should not attack you with (how many carbs,Proteins ,calories or exercise did you do.)We should recognize this as what it is *venting* and say something encouraging and supportive and not beat you over the head because we lost weight and if you didn't then you must be doing something wrong.Well sorry didn't mean to rant but I think most will get my drift. If you don't then don't waste your time bashing me cause trust me I do not giva-sshit either way.

Normal people just don't get it!!!

I made the choice not to mention this to others. I avoided the negative feedback. I am doing the bypass for my health and live a healthier lifestyle with this bypass as a tool to help me. I tested this out by saying, what do you think of my friend who is going to have a bypass to help her lose weight for her health? All the response was negative.
  20. Umm...I think that's exactly what the band was designed to do...keep us from eating too much. That's exactly how it worked for me when I had restriction (due to still being a bit swollen) after surgery. I was able to eat solid foods 2 weeks after surgery, but the band kept me from overdoing it. I pretty much had to bypass bread completely. Even now, with no restriction but 3 cc's in my band, french bread is a no-no. When I had restriction, I would stop after a small meal because of the fullness/sense of pressure caused by the band. It really has nothing to do with hunger for me because I've never had a hungry day in my life. It's more of quantity control. Something needs to remind me to stop or there will be *immediate* consequences to pay. .

Should or shouldn't. Is it worth it?

I revised from RNY to SIPS. I had it done due to medical issues.

Should or shouldn't. Is it worth it?

It's your choice but I have heard a lot more choose sleeve and some that had bypass wished they did the sleeve!

Just venting ~ WLS not work ?!?

Yes it will continue because my meeting that I had to attend at the doctor's office we were told your big friends are going to be jealous and hurt your feelings before anyone else. My reply would have bee "If you don't feel we have to work at it why don't you come on and get banded with me and we can do it together". Then send her to a seminar first. She will see how much work there is with this tool. Hang in there girl Another thing I have a problem with is people that are not even doing any of it comparing me to people who have had gastic bypass. I tell them I'm not even banded yet but there still will not be any comparison because my is expected to take longer so I don't gain it back. LOL

    Opinion Needed...Band or Sleeve?

In the end only you can make the best choice for yourself, it's your body. But, I chose to do the band because I wanted to lose weight slower, I also liked the idea that it was adjustable and that I'd still be able to eat anything I wanted (but limited amounts of course) without becoming physically ill (other than a few stuck episodes from time to time) what I mean by sick is with the other surgeries you could get very ill from eating certain things, or by having too much sugar. I liked the idea that I wouldn't have to deprive myself of some of my favorite foods like when I've "dieted" a million times before, doing this in the past only caused me to fall off the wagon and binge eat. Now everything is in moderation and I'm still losing. Another reason, I had many reasons lol.. I didn't want them removing anything, cutting me or re-routing anything. I did not like the idea that the sleeve and the bypass are not reversable, if something goes wrong with my band they can take it out, they can't give me back my stomach once they remove some of it... I also did not want to risk some of the side effects from those other surgeries, malabsorption, dumping syndrome ect. I felt safer with the band. My boyfriends sister had the bypass and she regrets it because she is always sick, since surgery she has become anemic, gets sick after eating alot of foods, her hair falls out and its very thin and brittle now. But I also have another friend that had bypass and she's doing great. I do not know anyone that has had the sleeve, so it's hard for me to form a personal opinion about it other than me not wanting to have part of my stomach removed. Everyone is different, but it scared me too much to have such an invasive surgery and by seeing some of the potential effects first hand. If for some reason the band does not work for me, and I had to do something else I might consider the sleeve as it seems to be better than bypass in my opinion. But let's hope that doesn't happen! So far I couldn't be happier with my decision, but it was a chance I took just like anyone else. There is no guarantee this will work for anyone, but we have to try. This is my attempt at taking my life back and so far so good. I'm loving my band, so far! Good luck you!

    Help! Weird Symptoms (slip?)

Thanks for the advice. I am pretty sure it has really slipped. I am burping down low in my stomach now and I can feel it when liquids struggle to get through the lower band. I know when it happened. I know why it happed. I know that what I did after the intial slip probably just made it worse as I choked the next five days on food. Now on Monday they will tell me to get an X-ray. My doctor will tell me I should just get a gastric bypass. I will see if my insurance covers it. I will do what he says UNLESS my insurance covers only the fix for the slip. Then I get set back three months. All my job interviews go on hold. All my volunteering goes on hold. I have to find someone to take me 100 miles to the hospital for emergency surgery. I am REALLY depressed. And the whole time I just look like a lazy fatty who can't control her eating to my doctor. That is unless of course, he did a shoddy job to start. > It's going to be a tough weekend.
