    Drinking with Meals

the reason is so that the food stays in your stomach longer (liquids will flush it out). However, this makes more sense to me for bypass people rather than sleeve, since the pyloric valve is bypassed in RNY. Regardless, it seems to be a requirement for both surgeries.
  2. Yes, I had gastric bypass surgery when I was 50. I’m 56 now.
  3. Hi, I have had the lap band for a little over 10 years. I had lost 100 lbs but gained 30 back. I recently found out my band migrated. I was having severe acid reflux, regurgitation, and sleepless nights of choking and puking. I finally had some testing done & they found my band migrated and there was a hernia above it and my lower esophagus was having issues pushing food through. I got my fluid taken out on Friday & I am finally able to sleep again. I am really shocked about how strange it is to be able to eat things I wasn't able to for 10 years, I am also enjoying taking a drink while eating. I am going to revise to the gastric bypass surgery & was wondering if anyone has had better success after a revision from the band to bypass? I can't do the sleeve because of my acid reflux issues. I tried to avoid bypass, as to why I had the band to begin with. Something about moving my insides around didn't sit well with me. I also see horror stories about dumping and blood sugar issues. I don't want to gain all my weight back because of a band issue & also don't want to have a removal of one thing and nothing to replace it. I am not sure how fast this will all go, they said they could do emergency surgery if I was still having issues, or do it as a normal surgery. My insurance covers revision. Hopefully soon before I gain all this weight back. I'm enjoying trying different foods I had to avoid for the past 10 yrs. hahahaha.

    Surgery

Woohoo! Are you getting excited yet? November 15 is my brother's birthday, so I've always liked that date. Congrats on getting a surgery date!
  5. I have Sunshine Health medicaid and I have had to have a few tests done that they require, and am still in the process. An endoscopy, a chest X-ray, EKG, sleep study, that nasty swallow test, a stress test, and I have to see a hematologist because I have a bleeding disorder in my family so they want to make sure that the blood thinner won't make me bleed to death and that I also won't get blood clots. They have to figure out exactly how much they can or can't give me when it's time. I've had quite a few surgeries already and have been fine, but this one you get blood thinners after it. I already have the history of dieting, pills and exercise. I'm 53 and have gone from 350 to 245-250 on my own over the years. I also have to see the nutritionist two or three times so I can learn how to eat properly. I don't think my surgeon requires the liquid diet, but I do have to be on a portion control diet with high protein. I can lose weight but I'm stuck at this weight so I need a bit of help. I have already changed my way of eating. No fast food, no fried food, way less sugar, but no sweet treats at all. I mostly eat the way I'm supposed to, but I have cheated a bit with a few sodas. After surgery I'm never going to drink them again. Nobody needs that stuff in their body anyway. My surgeon said if all of my testing is finished and ok that I can have my surgery in November. I've already done some of the tests and Monday I will get my appointments for the rest of them. I'm so excited to be getting the testing overwith and getting started on a new journey. I'm 5'3 I am 250 approximately. Highest weight was 350 Type 2 diabetic but A1C is 5.8 down from 7.2 High blood pressure High cholesterol (should be lowered by now) I used to have sleep apnea but had my tonsils and uvula removed (when I was 50..talk about the pain) I have figured out that one of my new exercises is going to be hunting for pokemons or whatever they are called..lol I just started playing that darn game and now I'm addicted. I'll be going to the gym too of course.:)
  6. Hi Leebick. You still doing ok? My brother needs this surgery after his sleeve surgery as well. He is totally against being the bypass so hopefully his doc can do the HH repair with mesh as well.
  7. I have never heard of that. Interesting. I have heard of endoscopic revisions (no cuts) for the gastric bypass that take less than an hour that are successful. Best of luck and keep us posted.
  8. I am wondering how common it is to have a revision from bypass to sleeve? I see a lot of the opposite.. I had my bypass done 7 years ago and lost 125lbs, got down to 145lbs, then got pregnant within the 1st year. I am now up to 215lbs and the dr said my stomach is still the right size but the opening into the stomach is very large now. They have suggested and scheduled this revision from bypass to sleeve for Oct 14th. Hoping to find others who have had this type of revision.

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

Hi Tamika! Your story sounds very familiar. My dr. has recommended gastric bypass for me since I struggle so much with acid reflux. I am excited to get back on track and feel healthy.

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

So excited for you guys! I would love to hear more about you and your journey. I am 49, live in Austin and have struggled with weight my whole life. My surgery is actually a revision from the lap band to gastric bypass. I've spent the last three months researching like crazy and feel really great about this life changing decision! Sent from my SM-G981U using BariatricPal mobile app
  11. I am scheduled for gastric bypass on October 11th. So excited but nervous! Anyone else having surgery in October? Sent from my SM-G981U using BariatricPal mobile app
  12. I have my bypass Wednesday afternoon. I know I just had major surgery and don’t expect to be painless but I just wonder when it takes a turn for the better? I have hard time getting up by myself and the most pain isn’t near any incision, it’s to the left of my belly button where I assume they cut the intestine.

    Weight loss

Have you decided you want to have surgery? If so, are you planning to pay out of pocket or does your insurance cover it? Have you gone to your primary care doctor to get their recommendations? Have you researched the different types of procedures? Which procedures are offered will depend on the surgeon you see (the place I'm going only does sleeve and bypass). It is very hard to lose weight and if you have a lot to lose (like 100 lbs or more) the only way it's going to happen and that you'll keep it off (still not a sure bet) is through surgery. It's not "the easy way out;" it's still very hard. There are a lot of doctors visits and nutritionist, psychologists, etc before you can have surgery. I suggest checking out https://asmbs.org/ to start your research.

Hi. I don't have an exact date, but my surgeon told me it will most likely be in November. I just have a few tests I have to do. Have already done some of them.
  15. I'm 53 and am supposed to have my RNY in November. I have been through menopause. I got thrown into it when I had a TAH with OOPhorectomy. I had a uterine ablation and it didn't help me at all. I had some major issues though. My sister was the same way. It failed her too. I used to be able to lose weight...100 pounds at a time, but that was so long ago.
  16. Hello! I am also scheduled for 9/20. I am still awaiting approval though, which is super frustrating, but I am hoping this all works out. I am not getting bypass, but sleeve. Yes, it's been a long process, but I feel blessed for the opportunity and excited for the changes to come!
  17. April 29th 2019 at 44 with lifelong chronic illness/disability, already had hysterectomy at 35, metabolic disorders, inability to exercise due to post exertional malaise from M.E. I was already utilizing tools of low carb low calorie yet my weight skyrocketed and I was just lost. Finally came the tool of Gastric Bypass (had to have my gallbladder removed at the same time) I was strict, eventually found it helpful to keep a daily log of weight, food, calories and protein. I reached goal by March 2020. As a lifelong tool it is very beneficial. I do not think age is a factor. Perhaps menopause can be in some ways for women but otherwise this is the Gold Standard ... never see it as a diet but a change for life and it will take you far.
  18. I am so excited to be at this point. Some times it feel like it took forever to get here, other times I feel like it flew! I am on day 4 of my liquid diet, and I am finally starting to feel more like myself. Day 1 and 2 I was so weak, tired, sore, headache... but most of that has subsided thankfully. Down 8.8 pounds so far since Monday! Anyone else schedule for bypass on the 20th? Looking to surround myself with a support system. Thank for reading, and good luck to you all!

    Update On Me (Surgery: 5/19/21)

UPDATE: So today I got some blood work done that my gp requested. He had me do a CBC, Basic Metabolic, Triglyceride, LDL and A1C tests. Everything came came back good and/or improved but for a few......... LDL: On 3/11 it was - 151 Today, 9/9, it was - 135 Triglycerides: On 3/11 it was - 322 Today, 9/9, it was - 141 A1C: On 3/11 it was - 6.7 Today, 9/9, it was - 5.8 And my iron shows as low. Lower than in March and May when they checked it but I'll wait til I see him next week to talk about this. Otherwise I am soooooo close to having everything back in the NORMAL range!!! In November I'll have more blood work done for all the vitamins and stuff the surgeon is requesting. On other note, not sure why but for the last week or two I have stalled again. And in fact my weight has gone up 3 lbs from my lowest (my lowest was 253.4 on Aug 28th and has now been staying around 256/257). Not sure why. Nothing has been different but for me regularly walking on the treadmill (30 min a day, for two weeks now) and I have started to incorporate an upper body, full body and lower body routine (Mon, Wed, Fri) and the upper body part has me using weights (started this week). Otherwise, eating the same, bathroom has been the same, etc. I am due for my period in the next 8-12 days. So maybe that? I don't know.

    HELP!

Hi, I am so sorry to hear that you are having a difficult start to your recovery due to Ida. Hoping you & your loved ones are all ok. I found this website with a meal plan that looks similar to mine as well as many others I have seen online. The link below will tell you more about what to eat during the different phases. You can also do searches for other examples. Most advise 64 ounces of liquids & protein daily, but that goal may be hard to reach those first few weeks. We're you given vitamin recommendations? Those are also part of the follow-up plan. Wishing you well with your recovery from surgery & Ida. OBESITY COVERAGE MEAL PLAN https://www.obesitycoverage.com/the-big-gastric-bypass-diet-guide/#week 1

    445 lb. Anyone else?

My highest recorded weight was 392 (in 2017). I was 389 when I started the program to have WLS and since my program required a 6 month monitored weight loss I lost 68 pounds during that time and was 321 on my surgery day. I'm currently 178 pounds. For reference... I had the Loop Duodenal Switch/SADI-S/SIPS surgery. It's a gastric sleeve stomach, just with the added intestinal bypass bit.

    Psych Meds after Gastric Bypass

Lizonaplane, My daughter may be atypical, but she is bipolar and had a RNY bypass over 10 years ago. She was on three meds; antidepressant, psychotic and anxiety. They tried crushing the tablets which made her throw up, so they changed her to Epilim as it was a liquid. Part of her weight gain had been the bipolar drugs. After her surgery she started to lose a lot of weight. Unknown to me, she weaned herself off the drugs, going cold turkey with the anti anxiety meds, because she started running. She found the endorphins from running made her feel good and moderated her condition. At her peak running she was doing 2 marathons per weekend many weeks. She is highly unusual as a Bypass patient in being able to do this! She injured her hip, and couldn’t run, so now she lifts weights. She was determined to take control of her life in every way. She has been drug free for years and is fit, healthy and active. I wanted to share because her psychiatrist at the time said the Bypass would not help her with her mental health, and refused to sanction the op. We paid a psychiatrist to assess her and they concluded she was sane enough to make her mind up. As a person who had previously attempted suicide on more than one occasion, she is an example of the positive outcome possible from gastric surgery. It saved her life, literally, and has given me my daughter back. I wish you all the best.
