Hi Robyn: I am fron the boonies North Vancouver, BC. I can't seem to find many people banded out here so I thought "what the hey, I try and hook up with someone from another province and see how they are making out." Afraid I am an older bandster. 63, retired, married and love to travel. I was 299 when banded and now 268. When my weight goes down, I think the airplane seats will be more comfortable. Doddie

Hello everyone, I'm new to this site. I have been considering Lap-Band surgery for over 2 years now. I finally decided to go through with it in January, but have had problems getting all the paperwork correct and to my surgeon. I have BC/BS of MI, they require all this paperwork in order to pay for the surgery but will not decide whether they will pay until after the procedure is performed. I'm a little scared they will reject my claim and I'll be stuck with astronomical medical bills, but I'll deal with that when the time comes. I hope to have my surgery in late August or early September. My surgeon requires 5 different medical evaluations by different doctors, a sleep study, exercise 30 min per day 5 days a week, and Opti-Fast diet for 4 weeks prior to surgery. Right now I'm working on all these requirements. I'm curious if you all had such strict requirements form your surgeons? I have not started the Opti-Fast diet yet but it seems like it will be Hell on Earth for 4 weeks. So I guess I should just say Hi and please send me good luck and any words of encouragement, 'cause I'm really gonna need it in the weeks to come.

Introducing Myself I Am Newbie Here: Future Sleever

I have Ind BC and Personal Choice BS in the PA/NJ area and they covered it. In the beginning of the process, my dr had me call and ask them a million questions about what is/isn't covered and requirements for surgery. I think that was the best idea. I knew exactly what I had to do to get approved. When it came time, I was approved almost immediately. Now I am on the two week pre op diet waiting for surgery on Oct 1. Hope this helps!! -
I have worked in managed care for more than 20 years and must say that the EOC (evidence of coverage) usually lists more procedures under the exclusions than the plan will actually deny. You see, they CAN pay for more than they say they will if they have a policy to administer the coverage equally among their insured, or have good reason for making the exception. But, if they don't offically exclude it, they open themselves to having to pay for it. The coverage guidelines, intended for internal use and for the providers and delegated authorizing entities, would be helpful here. Good luck with that though, your best chance of getting it covered would be to have the doctor submit a request for the service with support of medical necessity. If it is denied, you should receive appeal rights (could vary by state). Usually, if it is denied and your appeal is upheld it will go to a 3rd party for a final decision (again could vary by state). Out of curiosity, did they cover your surgery or were you self pay? If they covered they surgery, that is a good indication that they may consider PS. Especially since, based on what you posted, your policy shouldn't cover WLS period. I have BC of CA (HMO) and they covered my surgery. They will also cover ab-plasty if certain requirements are met, after surgery. Plans vary greatly, even within the same insurance company. It really comes down to the individual policy you hold.

Hi FairyFacade....My BC/BS insurance policy reads the same. What made you decide to do the surgery knowing you don't have coverage for complications?

I was banded on 4/11/11 & I too have had an ordeal with all of the sicky, icky, sweetie tastes & smells. A friend brought me an 80 calorie Creamy chicken Soup mix from Herbal Life that has 16g of Protein per serving. I mixed it with the chicken borth & it was a very nice taste difference PLUS since I was now able to keep some protein down I have felt "fed" & so much better. There is a medical grade Protein powder called unjury that come in flavors, but also comes "unflavored" & in a soup also. It is real nice, dissolves completely & immediately. I mixed it in some milk & was satisfied as well. Hope this helps you.

I do not know any clinics other than Canada and specifically BC. My note was regarding being careful when leaving the country. I know there are excellent surgeons in Mexico but I worry about complications occuring so far away. Just do lots of research!! I am sure it will be great!! Rhonda

Just had my initial consultation with True Results in Austin, TX. So beings my journey. Want to also thank everyone in advance here since has been my primary source of information with regards to deciding to undergo WLS, and specifically to go with Lap Band. Based on my roadmap my surger date will be in March 2013... seems so far, but I imagine time will go quickly. Anyone else here been to the True Results in North Austin? I have BCBS Fed insurance which will cover based on my BMI, but I am not sure what my total out of pocket will be.

Every relationship is based on forgivness. Each relationship has up's and downs. But it is certianly up to you to continue to forgive someone, about there " bs" .. However if your ablity to LOVE is hurting you more you need to re-evalute your relationship. A relation w/ another person should be valued not a job or task or headache or daybreaker, you should gain happiness, self satisfation, comfort in that someone. Just ask your self .. are you hurt are you happy. Why is this person of value to me and finally is the comfort and satisfaction given back or are YOU constantly making that effort between you too.. and Can you forgive?.....

I used to live there. Look for Barton Springs Pool. Natural spring fed pool. Hamilton pool. (beautiful natural park). South Congress, for cool shopping. Congress Bridge, where the Mexican Free tailed Bats live. They fly out at dusk. awesome to watch from the Austin American Statesman parking lot. Music on 6th street. Hope this helps. Have fun!

Hi everyone. I'm seriously considering getting the band in the next few months, but I have a question about eating "real" food. I know that my more successful dieting attempts have included being able to eat "real" food just in smaller quantities. I try to avoid a lot of fake sugar and overprocessed low-fat things. (I'd rather have 1/2 an oz of "real" cheese than eat a ton of low-fat.) I'd rather go without sugar or have fruit than eat a lot of artificial sweeteners. Is it possible and reasonable to eat whole, real foods with the band? I don't mind picking leaner options as long as they're natural foods. (Ie, we're looking into buying local grass fed beef, eggs from local pasture raised chickens, veggies from local farms, etc.) I have a little one and we're trying to start eating whole, organic foods as a family and try to develop some good eating habits as he grows up. I know that there's a period where shakes/smoothies are necessary, but I'm wondering how many people end up living off of "diet" food and supplimental food after the healing process is done.

2 weeks post op and failing :(
Makulafamy replied to RNmomtothree's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
It gets better, but I wouldnt place all my hope on your first fill. It took me three to feel a difference. You have to change the way you are thinking! You are failing bc you ate 2 pieces of pizza. We all have those times where we eat too much or make the wrong choices. however, you have to keep reminding yourself what you want from the band, why you went through the surgery, paid money for it, etc. When you binge or make poor choices over and over...you aren't doing yourself any favors. You want this band to work. You have imagined and dreamt of all the good that can come from it. GET IT GIRL! During bandster hell is sucks ass...this willpower business! But dont give up and don't move backwards! -
Hi Everyone, This is my first post on my new laptop - the key board is much different than my regular computer. I am in the process of going for the Lapband procedure. I have already met with the doctor and she indicated that I was a excellent candiate for this procedure. The insurance has already been approved and now I have to go to my first meeting in Mar, hopefully I can have the surgery in April. If it were up to me, I would go now. I am so fed up with failing at all diet plans. I have been trying to read everything that people have posted, its all a little overwhelming. In the paperwork they gave me gave me no indication that you have to be on a liquior diet two weeks before surgery. Maybe they will explain all this to me a my first meeting. I am having the surgery at Hershey Medical Center, PA., Dr Shoppe is the surgeon. Can anyone give me a step by step on how they went thru the procedure, i.e. before, during and after surgery. I did watch the surgery on line live, it was being performed at Hartford Hosptal, Hartford, CT. You and go to their web site and watch the surgery. Any info would be helpfull. Thanks, Eileen

Learning in Alberta, Canada.
Devana replied to Jackson's mom's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hello 2fatt and welcome to LBT! Holy smokes, Alberta health care covers banding? That's great. BC health care sure as heck doesn't. It covers more drastic forms of gastric surgery but not banding. Lucky you. Go on to the Canadian forum and I'll bet you'll find Albertans who can help you out. Good luck with your plans! -
tell me how this surgery has impacted your life
melinda_205 replied to mejusme's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hey Me! I am so scared of pain that I do anything to avoid it mostly scared of being put to sleep! However I have had my tubes tied in the past and this surgery/ recovery was much easier than that surgery. I also had a hernia repaired at the same time. I wasnt on pain meds but maybe 2-3 days, after that it was liquied tylenol when I needed it (I still have some in the bottle). I had surgery on 7-1-09 and so far, I think it was one of the best decisions that I have ever made. About a week before the surgery it hit me...OMG I'm getting this done and its gonna hurt and I'm gonna have something inside my body. I almost backed out, but at that moment I thought "no way, I'm doing it". I had to quit thinking about it....I studied more school work that week than I have since going back to college. The morning of surgery I started crying and my mother looked at me and said "if you want this, dry it up, if not get your ass back in the car. This was your decision, its your life but I cant let you go in there if I think you are making a mistake, so what do you want to do" I looked at her with dry eyes and said "let's do it". I have never regretted my decision. I sometimes wish that I could lose faster, or wish that I could eat something, but today I am 2 months out and I have lost 28 pounds and I'm not scared that I will put it back on...just ready to see more go. When my mom was telling me just how things needed to be done, my husband was willing just to talk me into getting back into the car. He has diabetes and now while I am trying to prevent health problems he sits around eating sweets and junk food and watching T.V. I think I made the right decision but you have to decide for yourself. I am pretty new at this also, but if there is anything that I can help you with please let me know. This people on this site is your best source of information....most are more than willing to be open and honest even during those times when you just want someone to agree with you so you will have a reason to screw up. It is also bc of those same people answering questions and giving me information that I knew what to expect...not something sugar coated by a doctor or nutritionist...but the real stories! Good luck on your journey. -

ahhh so nervous! what do people think?
beckynash3006 posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hiya!I am new to all of this! Basically this is my story - I am 21 years old and have always had a problem with my weight I am a binge eater and a total comfort eater - i go over the top and then try to lose weight and go really strict and controlling on my food and so I am always yo yoing. I have spoken to the doctor and I have such a negative mindset (which I hate) I stress over the way I look and how other people view me. I am anti depressants and my weight completely controls my life and I have got to the point that I am fed up of trying and putting it back on again and that the only way I can get my life back is with the band! However I am sooooo nervous!! I have always had such bad eating habits that I am scared and dont trust myself - what if I still eat crap? have any of you found it different after having the band, I am motivated to lose weight by thinking of all the dresses I could buy and could get noticed for once but I am petrifed, what if I have this done and nothing changes, and my emotions still make me want to eat will i still binge or is that physically impossible. what did everyone else find? I just can't stress how nervous I am - I know this is the only chance I have to do something wihtout things getting out of hand and doing something silly but like everyone says its not a miracle cure but i was hoping that with exercise (which i do about 3 times a week anyway) would fall off just because my stomach makes me eat less?!?!I just can't imagine carrying on this way I just want to be able to live my life and enjoy going on nights out without getting scared and comparing myself to others!help?!?! (sorry about all the negativity my mind is just in overdrive!)Becky xxx -
