Hi, my bypass was 1/23/23. I was nervous as well not knowing what is going on with my insides healing. Very scared at times navigating drinking clear fluids and protein shakes. I couldn't gage how long the liquid took to get through the swollen areas of the surgery. I wished I had superpowers of xray vision ha! I have had surgeries before that I'd gage my healing on visible scars and inflammation. This was new and different. I want to validate your feelings of fears as I too had these anxious moments. You'll start to get better learning your new organs function as with everything new it's going to take time. I'm starting my new phase of soft foods(from pureed) and will have to figure out again how my healing is going. (Secretly hoping for those xray vision superpowers, ha!) Cheryl

Pureed diet need new ideas
The Greater Fool replied to Stephy2014's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I sure felt like a whiney baby post-op. My surgeon said no baby food. Babies have different nutritional needs than adults. Pureed options are easy. Let's see, what did I puree? Prime rib, Thai chicken, Curry chicken, Chicken alfreado. The list goes on and on, I ate my favorite proteins and big flavor foods. Good luck, Tek -
Second Round of Restriction???
The Greater Fool replied to Jeanniebug's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm about 20 years post-op. From 6 weeks post-op to now my meals are 3-4oz of protein, 1oz of veggies. I eat until I get full or complete my meal, whichever comes first. Forcing it just causes discomfort and even pain, so I don't do it. There are days when I take a bite or two and get the signals that I need to stop. I might try again in an hour or just say "f-it" and go on with my day. My pouch is the boss. Good luck, Tek -
Anyone super shaky one month post op?
summerseeker replied to susanjane111's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had this when I was not drinking enough, and eating enough calories because of a swollen suture line in my new tummy. Then I had it again when I had dropped a lot of weight and needed to come off my blood pressure medication, I just didn't need it anymore. I had it randomly yesterday morning when I got out of bed too quickly and got busy. I ate some yogurt and had a large milky coffee and I was fine. When I am out I always take a protein bar in case this happens when I have skipped a meal -
Questions - Contemplating Surgery
BriarRose replied to Devi's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am so glad that you are working with a therapist and have a great working relationship with them. I had a sleeve a dozen years ago in my mid 50's. I am now (well - next month !) 67 years old. I struggled with my weight my entire life. Had this been an option years before, I would have done it ! I am also a mental health professional. The problem with depression and/or anxiety is that you can be those things when you are obese, and losing weight .... well... you may weigh a lot less, but you can still be depressed/anxious. If you are using medication to help modulate your mental health symptoms, you might check how those medications work with your specific surgery. Weight loss surgery will not "make anyone happy" - but it will help you to lose weight ! Personally, I have panic attacks. They started about 20 years ago for no good reason. My weight before, during and after weight loss has had absolutely NO effect on them. Some years are better than others. If you have weight re-gain, you have to get to a emotional/mental place where you can concentrate on going back to basics of how you lost the weight in the first place after surgery. I did experience weight gain at about 6 to 7 years post sleeve. I lost my mother, brother and father in a few year's time. I did not pay attention to what I was eating. I became a caregiver and mourned those losses. I had too much on my mind to "see" myself. When I got myself back together, and could see past all those events; I made a conscious decision to re lose the 40 pounds I put on. ( I had lost 140 ) I took a couple years to lose the weight. I realized I did not know how to maintain my weight. So each time I lost 10 pounds or so I would stop losing weight and work on maintaining THAT weight for a couple months. Once I had that down, I would lose some more. I needed to be INTENTIONAL. And make the way I eat work for me. I got back to where I was, and then kept it stable for another year. A few months back I decided to lose some more. My thought was 10 more pounds. I have lost 12. I am at one of my maintenance phases right now. Try not to let your weight define who you are, who you want to be, and know that there is NO time line for being your best self ! Congratulations on saving up that money to give yourself the BEST way to lose weight, and to be successful. -
So I pretty much tell anyone who will listen about my upcoming surgery. I explain the year of pre op requirements I had to meet, the diets I need to follow (pre and post op), the potential of food intolerances that I may gain. The life long vitamin deficiency that I have to address. And so far, for me, the nasty aftertaste of pure death I get from cheap protein shakes. I explain what the surgery consists of (amazing how many people think sleeve is the same as a lap band). Lol, lazy way out, cheating. Let’s just take a look at the rules, while they are looking for the rules that show we are cheating, I’ll be moving on with my new, longer life. Screw em!

The ones who’ve never been fat or the cringed medical term obese! But you should have just exercised. Hired a whole trainer because I thought the same thing 18 years ago. Oh if I don’t lose it by then…. I am going to figure what I did wrong and start over. For me gastric sleeve was a blessing because I NEVER realized how bad I eat even with fruits, veggies whole grain and protein.

Let us talk loose skin and muffin tops
GreenTealael replied to omrhsn's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
The pain from plastic surgery was a lot more intense than laparoscopic weight loss surgery for me (however to me it was comparable to a caesarean). I also didn’t think I would pursue skin removable when I started because I was so focused on health. Honestly I could have gone either way but what pushed me over the edge was someone asking when was I due. I was not pregnant. I booked a plastic surgery consult less than 6 months after that. I see a lot of sleeveless compression tops for men and that might be I lighter layer option to consider. -
I love Premier Clear Peach (haven't tried the Tropical Punch flavor) ! They are very refreshing and a welcome change from the thickness of the protein shakes. I have not been able to find them on store shelves and have had to order online. If anyone knows of a store which stocks them, the information would be greatly appreciated!

My surgery date is March 8! I started a low-carb liver-shrink diet today. I’m so excited…not nervous at all! I’m going to do the Premiere Clear for the first week to keep my protein up and then the second week, I’ll add in my Fairlife chocolate protein shakes…they’re my favorite! I haven’t tried the Premier Clear yet, but from what I’ve read, it’s got good reviews…has anyone here tried it?

Sucking on hard candy during clear liquid phase
hills&valleys posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Would these be allowed during a clear liquid diet as long as you do not chew and swallow the hard candy? After surgery, your mouth is dry, throat is sore and stomach is queasy....seems like a good option to address all issues. The only objectionable factor I foresee, might be the sugar alcohols causing more gas but one or two pieces shouldn't contribute unless a person is highly sensitive to sugar alcohols. Any experience or opinions would be appreciated. -
Amazing! It’s great to hear this side as well thanks for sharing. I think it provides a good balance. It hasn’t been all bad for me Infact I think it’s been mostly good. The pain was intense and still comes from time to time (I’m nearly 2 weeks post op) but that’s probably because I’m doing a bit more with 4 young children. I don’t know how you’re managing to hit your protein goals. I still struggle with mine but I’m not yet at the purée stage so watch this space. Water is especially difficult to hit 700ml never mind the 1.2litres I’ve been told I need daily. I’m definitely hitting my 90 minute walking target so that’s a plus. And I am starting to feel my jeans fall so an additional yay!!

October 2022 surgery support

I feel good most days but if I'm falling too far behind on protein or not drinking enough water I find myself getting terrible migraines that last for days. I'd say I'm not doing my best at eating real "meals". I work 10 hours a day and mostly just pack my lunch bag with high protein snacks. Cheese sticks, turkey jerky, cottage cheese cups, mixed nuts, kind bars (I buy the protein version), dried edamame beans, yogurt smoothies (the brand Two Good makes low sugar yogurt drinks with 10 grams of protein) those are a few favorites in my daily rotation. One of my favorite things to make for dinner is turkey taco meat. I mix a can of red beans into the meat for even more protein and top with 1/4 cup of shredded cheese. -
My surgery was Oct 5th, but I started my weight loss May 9th. Down 105lb but I still rely on a protein shake a day to get my protein in. I use either premier protein or fairlife, like them both. I have had a few stalls along the way but eventually a few pounds come off. Overall, so happy I had this done and wished I would've done it sooner.

Was sleeved on October 11th with a starting weight of 205. I am at 149 today. I agree about the shakes! Pre-surgery I loved the fairlife protein shakes but they make me so sick to my stomach post-op. I've tried different shakes and they all make me nauseous, so I'm also trying to reach my protein goals strictly through food. -

Great job. In October I had the surgery and was 295lbs. I am now 230lbs without 1 protein shake yet. I could not drink those. So protein is tough to get in everyday but weight is coming off well. -
Let us talk loose skin and muffin tops
Smanky replied to omrhsn's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Yeah, I'm unlikely to be able to afford skin removal surgery. I'll try saving and see how I go, as I'd certainly take that option if it was available to me, but I'm also realistic and refuse to hang my contentment on a surgery that may or may not happen. I like myself just fine now, loose skin and all! Sure, I could probably escape on a strong gust of wind like a sugar-glider, but I'm calling that my superpower. 🙃 -
A had a LOT of yogurt and Turkey chili. This combination sounds weird but I also had cottage cheese with marinara sauce and heat it up in the microwave. Cottage cheese is much more satisfying for me than ricotta and it was just as delicious. I also had a lot of Aloha protein bars, they’re my favorite and they’re soft and not too chewy.

I had surgery at 55 years old. That was 12 years ago. I only told a very small handful of people. My boss at work, who had wls 2 years before I did, and was my weight loss/surgery mentor; and three other trusted people.. I lived 53 years of my life being fat, being called names, and put down for my weight. I was NOT going to share this journey with just anyone. I "hugged" it to myself. It was my gift to me. To health, to longevity and not to impress anyone or anything else. I needed a tool, a way to be successful. And my gastric sleeve was it. I have almost lost half of me. From a size 30 to a size 14 petite. And 12 years later I have more energy now at 67 then I did in my 40's and 50s. When asked how I lost so much weight, I admit to "the sin of omission". My answer is that I eat less and move more. That I eat protein and vegetables and fruit and less carbs. All true. If a very obese person asks, and at some point, I feel like I can trust them, I will share. But it is not my idiot cousin's business nor is it my nosey neighbors. I like wearing normal size clothing. I love fitting in every chair. I don't just tell people about my medical procedures - why would I start with this one ? You do not owe anyone any explanations. It is like asking someone who has blue and pink hair .... "Did you dye your hair ?" "Did you lose weight ??" "yes, thank you for noticing. I love your sweater" they forget they asked, and tell you about their sweater.

MGB 2 WEEKS POST OP… I THINK I REGRET IT
SuperGuuurl replied to SuperGuuurl's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Thanks for the tip. Yes I never thought I’d ever say that but water is hell somehow… I bought some instant broths which you dilute in hot water. They’re perfect and I can add some neutral protein powder in to get something at least. -
I am just out of soft foods. I made individual baked ricotta, tuna salad with the flavored tuna pouches, refried beans, pea soup, black beans, turkey taco meat (cooked with a small amount of water in the pan to make it softer), chicken stewed in tomato sauce (may be too acidic for some), deviled eggs, tilapia in foil pouches with lemon, protein oatmeal, chicken stewed in coconut milk and thai spice base, shepherds pie, and I am sure I am forgetting a lot. I was on soft food for 2 weeks and was supposed to eat five 2-3 ounce meals a day. I get bored easily so I did a lot of experimenting. Here is the baked ricotta recipe I used. I found some ramekins on Amazon that had 2 and 4 ounce measurement marks and used those with 2 ounces in each. Perfect size. https://bariatricbits.com/single-serve-baked-ricotta/

Low Energy Levels after bypass?
Mia the Pug replied to AmPriSi's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
( I had gastric bypass surgery on January 23,2023. Right after my surgery I was able to walk the halls of the hospital and get a thousand steps in at a time. When I got home reality hit and I felt exhausted! I know I had pain meds during my overnight stay- but- when I got home, I’d sleep all night, wake around 8 am, and then nap from noon to 3. This was my first week home. I barely was awake enough to drink my protein shakes, and sincerely considered trips to the bathroom or to fill my water bottle exercise. The second week I walked almost everyday- one trip around my pond- 1,080 steps. When I’d get inside, I collapsed into my recliner to warm up and rest. But- I still felt tired and not peppy, nor did I see massive weight loss. I am at the end of week 3- beginning of week 4- I’ve lost 20 pounds, am getting my protein requirement I, and 60 plus ounces of water a day, I take my vitamins- but, honestly, I still don’t feel energetic. Oh, I also had a 5 cm hiatal hernia fixed at the time of gastric bypass surgery. I am letting my body sleep when it needs too, respecting that I must exercise , feed and hydrate my body and am just…allowing this journey to unfold at its own pace. I want to be thin, healthy and active, but at this stage- I respect that my body must heal from the trauma of surgery- which is a big deal. I am just grateful to be on this side of surgery, grateful that I had the opportunity to go through it and looking forward to the wonderful life ahead, being healthier, enjoying my family and experiences without unhealthy co morbidities that haunted me before gastric bypass. These are just my thoughts! -
2.5 years post op and gaining like crazy
pintsizedmallrat replied to LAJ23's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First of all, give yourself a break; being 2 1/2 years out and having maintained most of your weight loss is a win, so give yourself credit for that. You said yourself you're under a tremendous amount of stress. Any of the options you mentioned (your surgeon, your PCP and your OBGYN) would be good options just to rule out anything that could be contributing (menopause, stress levels, or even just taking a good hard look at where you can make do-able changes that would help). Maybe even all 3. I know you occasionally hear of people doing what they call a "pouch reset" where they follow an abbreviated version of their initial post-surgery diet (i.e. doing only liquids for a few days, then moving on to purees, etc), but I haven't done it and can't speak from experience how well it works. There's information out there on Google if that's something you'd like to read more about.
