Was ready for sleeve, medically necessary for bypass, now need advice
liveaboard15 replied to JessiPhoenix's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi. So what are the results of the endoscopy that they changed it to bypass? Acid reflux/heartburn issues? -
Anybody recently post op and healing?
fourmonthspreop posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hey! I just got my bypass on Monday. Home from the hospital as of Tuesday. I'm pretty much just inside alone and in a lot of pain. I can tolerate liquids but like I don't want to drink anything. I'm making sure I check my clock every 30 min while I'm awake to take something in. I had my first bariatric vitamin this morning. Felt a little bit nauseous after but took some meds for that. I feel very lonely right now and I think a big part of it is the pain. It's making me not want to go and walk around my neighborhood. I also am having trouble speaking because my throat is very irritated. Anyone else feel kind of just like sick and isolated? I hate this feeling so much. Can't wait for it to pass. Was ready for sleeve, medically necessary for bypass, now need advice
JessiPhoenix posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi, so I am scheduled to have the sleeve done on March 17th. I had an endoscopy done this morning and because of the results, my doctor has changed my surgery to bypass. I've learned everything about the sleeve and have prepared for it. Now I'm going to have to start over and prepare for the bypass. I'd appreciate any advice on things to be prepared for, preop and post op, and anything else you can think of!! Thanks! -
Anyone develop Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR or Silent Reflux) after Gastric Bypass?
yesno789 replied to yesno789's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Just wondering if anyone else has this condition. My Condition still persists despite being on Somac (PPI) x 2 daily for many months now and trying all the tips such as skipping acidic drinks and foods, no food 2 hours before bed, keeping bed raised. Any one that has LPR or Silent Reflux post gastric bypass, I would love to hear from you! -
I’m hoping they’re basing this on your blood tests & you are lacking in B12. That rigorous of an injection regime does seems extreme. But your blood tests could be showing you are very low & need a more intensive regime. But I’d still quiz your GP further about what your levels actually are & what they should be if only for your own information. Out of curiosity, are you a vegetarian or vegan? B12 is found in animal products (meat, seafood, poultry, dairy) so if you don’t eat much of these foods it could be contributing. @catwoman7 is correct. Sleevers don’t tend to have the absorption issues those with a bypass can. I only had to take a multivitamin & no other supplements while losing. I gave them up at 8 months post surgery & haven’t taken any vitamins since then. Don’t need to as my 3 monthly blood tests show I absorb enough from what I eat.

I just got home from the hospital. My surgery went smoothly and my surgeon said I am at least risk to have complications so I'm happy with that. I did a lot of walking in the hospital and got fluids down. The most bothersome part of all this is the pain in my chest and throat. Something is weird and swollen in my throat causing me to sound nasaly but it isn't my noise. My esophagus spasms every now and then and I burp a little bit which is uncom. I also have a lot of pleghm I can't get out because it hurts to cough and take deep breaths. How long does the acute pain last? At this point I'm just looking forward to taking a pain pill and drifting off to sleep. Does sleep help? Thanks for the support also. It still feels surreal that I did this! When I had my lap band, I went alone to Mexico. My husband told his son and his friend (probably before I got off the first plane) which totally pissed me off. I am having a conversion to bypass next month. I’m telling people the hiatal hernia story as well. I would simply not say anything, but he would probably tell again. I told him if he does it to me again that he will be left without me and can live with his son and friend. I’m a private person and feel like it’s really not anyone else’s business. It’s truly difficult for me to trust him to be silent after the first time.

Bypass patients have to take B12 via either sublingual tablet or injection (although the vast majority go with the sublingual tablet) because we don't have enough intrinsic factor to absorb it in any other form. I don't think sleevers have that issue - I think you can take regular tablets (if you even need B12 in the first place - maybe so (I'm not a sleever, so I'm not sure about this)) it could be these people are thinking of giving you different doses (the twice a year one might be a much higher dose), but that's just a guess. And they should be going by your lab work. I've had to cut back - and then increase - my B12 supplementation a couple of times based on my labs (I'm several years out, though)
-
Presumably they are going off of lab tests and not a calendar, as with a sleeve you may not even need it unless there is something about you that makes you low (it's more of a bypass than a sleeve thing.) I've never supplemented it (other than what's in my multivitamin) and my levels have always been fine.

Just starting the Bariatric Process surgery in 4 months
Lisa MK posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I am looking for some friends to help me succeed with this journey. My name is Lisa and I am having gastric bypass in 4 months. I have already lost 11 pounds in less than 2 weeks. I need to lose a total of 130 pounds. I welcome any tips for before and after surgery and someone to talk to when I have questions or concerns. -
I have suffered from GERD for years, some times bad some times terrible, I have also been in ER many times thinking I have a heart attack because of chest pains. I love spicy food and sometimes I had to choose between eating and sleeping. After the bypass, it has been gone, but it may be because I am only in the liquids phase. I had another issue, pain in my legs, like chronic, I have not lost that much of weight, I think what I have lost is mostly water but those pains are gone, I was worried I was not going to be able to take Ibuprofen ( which I know contributed to my GERD) but I am surprised I have not need any during the last 2 weeks. I am having problems to eat slowly, to recognize when I am full and stop before over eating, That hurts and makes me feel sick but each meal is a chance for a new test. I can't get out of my mind to eat all that is in the plate. ( Mommy did a good job on me ) I have some pain still in 2 of the incisions but it gets better. It is a good exchange for GERD and legs and back pain.

revision Gastric Sleeve to SIPS
RickM replied to tracey1027's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No direct experience, as the surgeons I am associated with primarily do the "traditional" BPD/DS, but the process would be the same. As to whether or not the sleeve is redone as part of the revision depends on the surgeon's preference and what condition the sleeve is in. The surgeon who has adopted our local support group only does the resleeve if it is needed, if there are any problems or defects with it. There were a lot of sloppy sleeves done in the early days of the VSG (say, 8-12 ago) as surgeons worked up the learning curve getting their techniques right ("twenty years of doing bypasses and they think they know how to do a sleeve...." to paraphrase one prominent surgeon.) As with any revision, count on weight loss being slower and less than with a virgin WLS (I like to think of it this way - our stomach was originally 32-64 oz capacity, and after WLS, even with some stretch and adaptation it may hold 6-8 oz,, so don't expect as big of a change the second time around.) If you are doing the revision for additional weight loss or correcting regain, try to seriously get a handle on why the first one had problems and correct those before proceeding. Good luck ... -

Meg3722 said everything I’ve been thinking in such a poignant way. Good luck and may God be with you! My gastric bypass date is 3/7/22. Please everyone, keep me in your prayers. God bless and keep each and every one of you-those who’ve had surgery and those with upcoming surgery! -
Has anyone on here had a revision from Sleeve to SIPS ? I have an appointment next week with a surgeon about it.. Just wondering to they make your stomach smaller again or they just do the rest of the surgery? How long to recover from this surgery? Have you lost any weight since the surgery?

Post op medication absorption
lizonaplane replied to Myrandalynn06's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
It depends a lot on whether you had sleeve or bypass. I was told to avoid bypass because it could cause more issues with my medications for bipolar disorder, and I know that even with sleeve extended release medications often need to be switched. Definitely discuss with your surgeon and the prescribing doctor. -

Yeah I do have extra skin but it’s easy to hide under clothes. Maybe someday I will get the extra skin removed. i am still actually losing weight… I haven’t stabilized yet. My goal weight was 195 but I just kept losing. My intake that I can do seems to be more in line with the limited quantities of bypass patients rather than sleeve. But everyone is different, so who knows. i am told it is impossible to lose “too much” and that the weight loss will eventually Peter off and stop. I revised my goal weight down to 165 pounds which would put me at ten pounds more to go. the way my body seems to work is I stall for a long time, then drop a ton of weight quickly (ten pounds) …. Then stall again for a while… then drop more…. i have sensitive skin and the excess skin does cause rashes to occur. I get them under my breasts, in my midline area by my belly button and with the skin overhang in the pelvic region. They say that if you have documented skin conditions like I do then they will take care of the extra skin… but it’s recommended to wait a couple years. I think it also has to be overhanging by a certain amount. (I think I remember my pcp saying it has to hang lower than the pelvis bone) -

I am a few days away and so excited and nervous all at the same time. Thank you all for sharing and keeping us updated. It helps so much for us who are waiting and have questions. My surgery is a revision from sleeve to bypass due to Hiatal Hernia which my surgeon will repair, GERD and never getting to goal with some weight gain. 2017 HW 284 I’m 5’3 LW after sleeve 194 after I juiced for three days to break the 200’s. Then two years ago I gained up to 224 and I turned vegetarian. Got down to 187. Then COVID hit. I have gained and lost the same 30 lbs for the last few years. Now my current weight is 225. My revision is set for Thursday, 2/17. I am hopeful all my efforts will get me to goal this time. I’m scared to end up the same. Wish me luck. -

Hey! I made it! just had my gastric bypass today. I will say when I woke up in recovery from anesthesia I was incredibly nauseous and threw up 3 times. The nauseous I felt was only from the anesthesia. Once they gave me good meds and I slept for 3 hours I woke up feeling like a new woman. I'm already doing laps around the hospital and am drinking liquids, eating ice and Jello. I'm about 8 hours post op I will say for anyone who has ever had a bit too much to drink, it feels like a bad hangover mixed with an intense core workout... that's the best way I can describe the feeling but you feel so much better with time. I dont regret it at all. I thought I'd feel depressed about being in a hospital feeling sick but the nurses are so nice and my room is cozy. I'm considering it a self love retreat. It's not so bad! You will all do great! Sending prayers. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app -

Food tasted really weird to me for at least 6 months post-surgery. I googled it and apparently a percentage of folks who have sleeve and bypass surgery experience a change in tastes. I expect it has something to do with the GI hormones, but I'm not sure. Nothing tasted right and I thought I'd never be able to enjoy food again. Not so! First, don't expect anything to be the same (or similar to "before surgery") for about six months. There are so many physical and hormonal changes taking place. You may not "go back to normal," but you WILL find a new normal and it is wonderfully functional! Right now, just treat yourself as a beautiful child who is learning and growing. Do the program (make sure you are getting plenty of protein and water), and you will be able to eat again, and even enjoy it. PS- I discovered quite a few of my "favorite" foods pre-surgery weren't enjoyable after because a part of eating them was to overeat them. Overeating now doesn't feel good and sometimes (even still) hurts terribly. I now have my taste buds back, enjoy what I always did, but have learned to eat them in small quantities. Wishing you ALL THE BEST!!

Revision from VSG to RNY with hernia repair
southernbanded replied to shriner37's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I am happy to hear you are seeing much success since your revision. I received notice that my biopsies came back showing Barretts Esophagus. Insurance is still denying saying that it was caused by acid reflux which was a complication caused by having VSG. As if I wanted to have Barretts Esophagus when I had VSG... ridiculous. -
Revision from VSG to RNY with hernia repair
mae7365 replied to shriner37's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I have Aetna, and my revision due to GERD and esophagitis was covered and I was not required to meet any of the pre-surgical bariatric parameters like diet, psych eval etc. I also had hernia repair, but the primary reason for the revision was the GERD and esophagus damage. I did have to have all the medical tests that proved I had GERD and esophagitis. The RNY revision was medically necessary and insurance approved and covered the surgery. I have lost 60 pounds since the revision surgery which has been a very pleasant side effect of the revision. Being able to sleep without acid in my mouth has been wonderful! -
Fallen off the wagon at 3 months post op
lizonaplane replied to ac0181's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree with trying to see a therapist, but that can be very hard to find if you didn't do your surgery with a big surgery center in the US or where you live. I've heard that places outside the US (especially Mexico, Turkey, etc) don't provide much support after surgery, and I know from experience that finding a therapist trained in weight issues can be very hard. I would try to work on things like figuring out what you are feeling when you decide to order take out. Are you tired, bored, sad, angry, lonely? If any of these things are the problem, eating take out is not the solution. If you wait until you are over tired or way too hungry to eat, you are more likely to make bad choices with what to eat. It's not hard to keep better choices on hand. Try keeping low sugar flavored Greek yogurt, tuna, protein shakes, cheese, fruit, etc on hand. I travel a lot so I eat out, but I try to choose the best possible option (high protein, low carb) and when I'm home, I make something with ground turkey or chicken like chili, taco meat, ground turkey stroganoff, etc and divide it in portions to freeze so I always have something that takes two minutes to heat up. It takes much less time than ordering take out. I don't wait after drinking to eat (my surgery center said we didn't have to) but I definitely don't drink after eating - it's painful to me, plus we were told it would just flush the food down our stomach and we'd be hungry sooner. Try to get yourself to track, even if it's only every other day. You said you've been working since May 2021 on getting this surgery. There's no second chance after this. Even if you have a revision surgery, you may not lose much weight. It's now or never. -
After surgery am I doomed to a life of throwing up???
huskymama replied to Jersey Girl in Tampa's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I will be 8 weeks out tomorrow and I have not thrown up yet other than right after surgery. But i have eaten a bite or two to many and it hurts like hell but im still learning my new tummy {I had the sleeve) and its limits. I didnt eat much red meat before surgery so no biggie for me but i honestly tolerate tuna or other fish better than any meat. Again Im still a newbie post op. I wish i could have done this weight loss with diet and exercise but once you get a certain overweight exercise is hard especially since I have severe arthritis. Since post op Im moving better - been grumpy the past few days I have no idea why - but honestly Id take never eating meat over being obese any day of the week. Its a big change for sure! But its worth it. I am down 35 pounds as of today! i threw up the first 3 days post op but this is pretty common but not everyone does this. My sister is 25 years out bypass and her daughter is out 2-3 years bypass they never throw up. SW: 227 Todays weight: 192 VS surgery: 12/22/2022 Total Loss 35 pounds -
Sleeve or Bypass? Apprehensive...
catwoman7 replied to MissNicole's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
actually, only about 30% of bypassers dump. I, unfortunately, do not ("unfortunately" because it'd keep me from eating a bunch of sugar!). But you're right, most people who dump can have SOME sugar - just not a lot (or at least not a lot at one sitting) or they'll set off the dumping "feature".
