    Revision, anyone?

I am also nervous on the risk for revision but like you feel the benefits outweigh them. I'm just praying my dr can do the surgery all in one and I dint require 2 depending in what he finds out from the band once he gets in there.

    Revision, anyone?

Hi there - I'm getting band to sleeve revision surgery on June 16th. No one can (or should) tell you not to worry about complications - there are risks for all sleevers, but unfortunately the risk is higher for us revisioners. We have scar tissue that has to be removed, along with the band, and generally the longer the surgery the higher risk of complications. I'm worried about this, but I think that the benefits clearly outweigh the risks (for me anyway). I know that I can't maintain a healthy weight on my own, and my risk for a range of serious health issues will just increase over the years. Statistically, my longterm outcome looks much better with surgery than without - but of course any of us could land on the wrong side of those statistics and be the one in hundreds/thousands that has a really bad outcome. Just like - I could have a heart attack next year if I don't do it. All we can do is look at the evidence and make the best choice we can. I wish you the best!
  5. hi.... was hoping for some feedback on what just happened. i am 3 wks post op - just went for followup today and down 19lbs, all looks great, and getting first fill in less than 3 wks. followed the liquid diet to near perfection, and have really been motivated and felt good. no issues, other than some occasional cravings and some gassiness if i drink or eat too quickly. now, after all that positive stuff, i've screwed up and just ate way too much. i was running late today and only had 1 Protein shake prior to leaving, and nothing else all day. bad idea, i know. just was busy and didn't plan well. got home from grocery shopping and proceeded to eat over a cup of mashed potatoes, 4 oz lf cottage cheese, a small sleeve (!) of crackers with some hummus, and 4 mini bags of miniature M & M's. what the hell?! i know better! but i let myself get too hungry and just blew it!! i completely bypassed mushies and plunged ahead into junk food all in like 20 minutes! and to top it off, i've truly never been a "binge" eater! feel way too full and very, very guilty. it's been over an hour and i haven't exploded or vomited, but i certainly don't want to compromise my lap band site and the healing process. dr just said today that its normal for many to not feel restricted at all yet, even though from the postings i've seen on here - that's not the case with everyone! this is just the healing phase postop before the first fill. ~sigh~ i would love to hear from others who may have "messed up" too. any repercussions? back on track!
  6. My doctor ALWAYS recommends the most expensive option first. He's pushing the 40k duodenal switch, then tries to negotiate bypass at 30k, then grudgingly agrees to do the sleeve (he does not perform lap-band). He does this with everyone starting at the information session regardless of BMI, co-morbidities, age, or any other factors. The cynic in me says it's a money thing, but he always shows the numbers where the more extreme the procedure, the greater the weight loss is (although sometimes not by much). Just try to remember that doctors see statistics, not necessarily individuals. *You* know yourself, and you have to do the research and figure out what is best for you. I personally did not want the nutritional deficiencies, and since I'm young, have no problems with mobility, and don't have any co-morbidities, I went with the sleeve anyhow. And I'm VERY happy with that decision.
  7. Shellyd88 did you have the sleeve or bypass? I agree, it is my decision. I weigh 229 and can't drop below 219 or I won't be approved. I have like 100lbs to lose. Thank you both for your replies!
  8. I quit smoking a year ago after 43 years. Using a vape with 0 nicotine worked for me. I used it for a couple of months and now seldom think about it. I got my sleeve in Mexico and I will tell you there was a woman who had a band to RNY revision and she and her husband were both smokers. You might get the lecture in Mexico but it probably won't affect whether they do your surgery. If you can get off the cigs before your surgery you will heal better. Good luck!

    I need some Advice!

I would go ahead and schedule the consultation. If possible, go to a Center of Excellence. At or after the first consultation, if it's a good program, they can help you navigate the insurance requirements. By the way, I see that you posted to the bypass forum. Since this is your first consultation, I recommend that you be open to exploring all the options and work carefully with your surgeon to choose the best procedure for you. Best of luck. You are embarking on a life changing journey.
  12. Hello all! I am Ericka, 35 from Chicago, and I am new in this process. I have only had my first consultation, and I just got referrals to see the pulmonary doctor and psychiatric doctor. 14. "A large liver prevents your surgeon from visualizing certain anatomy during the procedure. If the liver is too large, it then becomes unsafe to perform your gastric bypass surgery. Surgery, may then be cancelled and rescheduled to a later date." I know we are all doing the Sleeve here, but the surgeon still has to reposition the liver in order to make the sleeve, so having a shrunken liver will help decrease complications. If the liver is accidentally nicked or cut, it can cause internal bleeding. Stick to high Protein and low-carb, that is the gist of it. Many people do not follow a pre-op diet, and they are still fine. It is just a precaution to make things easier. I am sure your surgeon is highly qualified and even if your liver doesn't shrink they should do great.

Went for 1st fill and didn't get one

my doctor actually tells his patients to let him know if they are going on vacation so he can give them an unfill. he said there is a lifetime to be on a diet like this one, so you should enjoy your vacations. (he doesn't force and unfill, but he will give one if you want one. ) just so nobody thinks i came up with that on my own. it's good to know that you went 5 months without needing one though. i will reassess when august gets here and if i'm still losing, i may bypass that fill as well. we'll just have to wait and see.
  16. I'm considering a revision with Dr. Aceves and am also considering going on my own. Do you think that would be OK?

    Beginning my journey ????????

Hi I'm back, I chickened out two years ago and guess what I'm exactly the same weight ????... I did weight watchers for a year and a half and at most lost 35lbs.... I went up and down the last two years playing with either same weight loss.... Now it appears I have GERD WHICH FEELS LIKE A FREAKING HEART ATTACK.... I am too afraid to eat so hopefully the pre op weight loss will be easier.. I'm confused because after my GP referred me I was told the surgeon would call me with a phone appointment... Don't know if this is a good thing or bad thing...... I hope it means the process is faster! Just want to get the ball rolling... Bypass here I come!
  18. I'm on month two of my supervised 6mo diet. I had originally planned on the sleeve but, I have now opted for the bypass. How are you feeling so far?
  19. My spleen was scarred by the lap band and was nicked. Couldn't stop the bleeding so they had to take the spleen too. So got a bigger scar and annual vaccinations with my bypass. Talk about freebies. Still in hospital. May leave tomorrow or the next day. Sip, sip, sip!
  20. My surgery was 7/26 and the gas is killing me!! Summer Gonzalez bypass: 7/26/16
  21. My first and ONLY stuck episode was also with chicken. My nurse told me chicken is one of the worst for this problem with band and bypass patients. It is just a VERY dry meat. She recommended always adding something to chicken like salsa, marina sauce, gravy, or spaghetti sauce. I know it was a scary thing to have happen. I cried and told my husband to stay away until I got it unstuck. It was definately a learning experience. Best of luck to you on NEVER experiencing this again!
  22. Actually, that was why the sleeve was initially developed. They found that so many patients did so well with the sleeve that they didn't have to go in and do a bypass for many of them. If you have a skilled and experienced surgeon, I would listen to his advice. His primary goal is to keep you safe and alive and to perform a successful surgery. I started with an extremely high BMI and was sleeved April 20. I couldn't be happier.
  23. Hello, My Dr. recommended I switch from the Gastric Bypass to the Gastric Sleeve today, he wants to do it in two parts. Gastric sleeve first to lose weight and then to the Bypass later on. Have anybody had this done? He also said if I am satisfied with the weightloss from the sleeve I can just stick with it and get the Bypass. My surgery is Monday 12/28.
  24. Thank you! I have looked into as much as I can without calling...checked my insurance packet and info on my portal and know that my insurance does cover it and the surgeon I'm going with is in network, but I haven't called for the details and requirements. I definitely need to get on that! There are definitely many that you listed that I haven't heard of before! ...and that's with what research I've done (which I thought was a lot, but apparently not, lol). I do know that the website of the surgeon I'm going with mostly gives general info about the lap band, gastric bypass and the sleeve gastrectomy. I personally know two of his patients and both had the sleeve gastrectomy. There have been a lot of things that I have been considering, but some that I hadn't thought of, like divorce. My husband knows and while he's not a fan of weight loss surgery as a general rule, he has seen all of the work in the healthy lifestyle I have been living with little results and is supportive of me in this because he understands the frustration and knows that this will be a tool for me. As of right now, I've only talked to a very select few...and probably more than I really want to know already, at least at this stage. I just don't want the static of everyone's opinions. I don't think I mind those closest to me knowing eventually, but not yet. We'll see. I'm sorry to hear about the divorce. I actually have some of his videos saved on my watch list! I will definitely be sure to get started on those! Thanks again for all of the wonderful info! I sincerely appreciate it!
