  1. 1. Premier Protein Chocolate Almond Cereal (it is actually whey protein isolate flakes), it contains 20g protein in one cup of it. I like to mix it with Failife Nutrition chocolate shake (30g of protein). 2. Premier Protein Pancakes (I bought it in Sam's club) - I like it either with crunchy peanut butter or sugar-free raspberry jelly. 3. Oikos Pro yogurt (20g protein).
  2. It's very frustrating! I am considering an appeal or what my other options are. Its good to know that I am not alone. I am considering self pay at this point. I will check out your posts. Thank you!!
  3. This is exactly right. I have contacted my employer and crossing my fingers regarding a rider or them adding this. At the same time I don't want to hold my breath. Exploring my other options and trying to pick myself back up.

The oats are high protein because I add protein powder to them. The oats are just oats.

What brand of high protein oats do you like best? This looks amazing!
  6. My surgery is on March 8th so I'm a long way off from eating real/regular food but as I was in my nutrition course I really did feel healthier prioritizing protein intake. Just felt like I always gravitated towards carbs naturally previous to my nutrition course. That being said, does anyone recommend higher protein alternatives to foods they used to eat? I'll start with some! I do like how crunchy and textural chips are so I stocked up on Quest Protein chips - usually b/w 17-20 g protein for a small bag. Definitely not the same but an interesting alternative. Then I recently came across Magic Spoon - it's a 13 g protein bowl of cereal. I have not tried this before and wondering if anyone else has? Any other alternatives to recommend?
  7. The withdrawal from caffeine, sugar, etc. can be awful. Headaches, shakes, cold sweats, …. and the craving for them can be greater. Thankfully the first week is usually the worst. My surgeon recommends different diets for different patients but the all shake diet is known as hell week in his office. I’d done the shake diet twice before (two shake meals & one low carb, low fat meat & vegetable/salad meal) so I was much relieved when the dietician said I was to do keto for the two weeks. No calorie requirement or macro goals just high fat, high protein, low carb, low sugar. (She also said keto was a good way to kick start my weight loss but not as a long term diet.) I lost about 5kgs.
  8. I had protein shakes (I think 4 or 5/day, unlimited broth, SF jello, tea coffee). The limited choices of liquids was actually liberating, for some reason....
  9. Omgosh, on day 13 your surgery got post poned?? That must’ve been frustrating! I’m really happy you were able to have the surgery eventually. Do you remember what you had for your liquid diet? Was it all protein shakes or other? I’m thinking I may move to liquids the last three days. Just wanted to see what helped you 😊

    Feb sleeves unite!

LGS 2/15/23. I’m struggling mentally with all of this. I have regrets and wish I never had this surgery. I’m probably grieving about all of this. It just seems so miserable to watch everyone else enjoy their food and while I can only have pureed eggs and such in such small portions. If not I’ll end up sick. I’ve not had nausea or vomiting but trying to time things where I’m not eating and drinking at the same time and waiting 40 minutes after a meal to drink and trying to hit the hydration goals and trying to get the 60 grams of protein in. It takes eating all day to hit the protein targets but if I’m eating all day I fail at meeting my water goals and the reverse is true when trying to get my protein in. I’m allergic to artificial sweeteners and dairy products so I cant do the shakes, the water based protein drinks make me feel ill, and I’m not at week 4 where I can have soft foods. I’m just hoping all of this will be worth it and it will get better. I completed 2 years of therapy before having the sleeve and started at 211 lbs with a bmi of 37. I think I probably could have chosen a less restrictive option and accomplished the weight loss goals. I need encouraging. I’m not happy ever when I have to put food or drinks to my lips. Additionally its difficult because you cant heat food in the microwave but eating slowly causes it to be cold and so it’s just a struggle I didn’t anticipate which frustrates me terribly because I’m always hungry and always turned off by food because of all this. Pureed food is better than the liquids but Im just not happy and need a safe space to vent. Otherwise things are progressing as expected my t week post op appointment I was down 15 lbs so that’s a win but again I hope this gets better. Is there anyone at least 2 -3 months out from surgery and how’s it going?

    Feb sleeves unite!

Had my sleeve surgery 2/28/23 4 days post op today definitely less pain from day one. I agree with everyone else on here saying they were able to tolerate the shakes before surgery and now are struggling. They’re very thick and taste plant based to me. I had my first cream soup yesterday and it kept me full all day. Im not getting in all the protein and water intake that I need because i get full so fast. What are some of your favorite soups & shakes? I can not wait to hit the pureed stage.
  12. No you are fine. Yesterday I barely got 2 ounces of protein in. Well today I got 60 grams in plus my fluid. I think we are doing good. The restriction will come when we start to eat. Sent from my LM-Q730 using BariatricPal mobile app

    March 23 buddies yet?

If it is not too difficult or stressful for you, I say go and enjoy yourself but drink your protein prior and enjoy sipping on your teas, broths, etc while they eat and you all socialize. I am on day 10 of 14 and took my son to dinner for his birthday last week with family and did exactly that and was so glad that I went and enjoyed myself. It didn't bother me at all nor anyone else as they understood (many of whom I didn't feel the need to explain the full situation but simply if asked why I wasn't eating I explained I had an upcoming medical procedure and was on a very limited diet. No questions asked. Enjoy yourself! You can't stop living! This is only the beginning of life-long changes when we will not be able to eat as others do. Good luck and be strong. This is your life, live it! ❣️
  14. I know that a lot of programs do things differently. My program calls for 2 weeks post-op liquids only, followed by 2-3 weeks of pureed, before moving on to soft foods. I am near the end of my second week, and have been using beef and chicken bone broths along with cream soups to keep some flavor sliding past my pallet. My question is - Why does it feel like I can have an endless flow of liquids going into me? How does this tie into actual food, where I've been told that I will be able to eat a maximum of 2 tbsp of something like scrambled eggs? Maybe I'm not understanding how liquids don't rest in my pouch anymore? I'm getting in like 70+ oz a day between protein shakes, gatorade zero, water, and broths/cream soups. I feel like this is too much - am I doing something wrong?
  15. My insurance didn't cover it either, as Catwoman mentioned, your employer needs to add it to their plan, and I was told no going around that. I ended up as self pay, and using my HSA savings. Because I have a high deductible plan, I figured even if I was able to go the insurance route, it would cost me 7K in my deductible, and I would lose months and months of time jumping through insurance hoops. There are clinics I'm sure all over the country that specialize in just bariatric surgery, I went through West Medical in LA and had a great experience, it was $10K and only took 3 weeks from 1st consult to surgery. Mexico clinics start around $5k, and while I know some have had great experiences that route, I just wasn't comfortable. It's very possible you have a local bariatric Dr. that takes self pay. There are also financing options with credit cards like Care Payment that offer no/low interest rates. Don't let money hold you back!
  16. I was sleeved 2/23/23. Overall I feel pretty good, no issues with nausea. I am constantly sipping something all day long to get my protein and water in, but am still concerned about being dehydrated. I feel weak and tired until I get enough in during the day. My only issue has been a little cramp/stich on the left side. It hurts when I take more than 2 sips, or not enough time between sips. I wasn't going to weigh myself so soon or so often, but seeing a pound come off everyday has been encouraging. I know some others have issues with weigh ins, and I know the mind game that happens when the numbers are't what we want to see, and yes, I know I should be focusing on helathy habits. But for ME... right NOW... it's exciting.
  17. Hi, I am 3 months and 2 days since my gastric sleeve. I try not to weight myself often but keep finding that I do. I know that there will be stalls and slows but I wasn't expecting to lose only 6 lbs in the entire month. I have not been exercising regularly but i have been following everything else: drinking enough water, getting all my protein in, keeping a low carb diet. I realize that i have been not eating much during the day but tend to get my food in the evenings. Could that impact my weight loss? Any help is welcomed!
  18. Is RNY not an option? If GERD is a concern but bariatric surgery is the goal, I would consider RNY and see if that fits your needs.
  19. So frustrating! I'm so sorry. Maybe see if an appeal is possible? Sometimes the squeaky wheel gets the grease.... I did self-pay in Mexico and had a WONDERFUL experience. Feel free to read some of my other posts for additional info. I know that's not an option for everyone, and many don't feel comfortable going that route, but it's worth looking into.
  20. My primary insurance thru my employer (united healthcare) does not cover it. Im fortunate my husbands new insurance (Aetna) does have bariatric surgery coverage. But before he got this insurance I was seriously looking into going to Mexico for my surgery. There's some financing options available too.
  21. Is self-pay an option? I found a great surgeon in Alabama because bariatric surgery was excluded from my insurance as well. I had very few pre-op requirements and the cost was $8995. You could always go to Mexico too which is the cheapest but I was too nervous to go that route.

    February 2023 surgery dates!

I found that gatorade zero with protein, and the premier protein clear drinks are a nice change from the protein shakes. They aren't bitter, and when I serve them over ice and let the ice melt a bit it waters it down a little and it tastes like juice.

2/21/23 Sleeves - how is your recovery going?

I would definitely touch bases with your nutritionist about the protein part. Staying hydrated is the most important thing. My annoying phone alarm trick helped me. I just kept a medicine cup near me, and filled it every 15 minutes and just kept sipping. It's really challenging if you're feeling tired and resting/sleeping a lot.

2/21/23 Sleeves - how is your recovery going?

I set an alarm on my phone to go off every 15 minutes for a few days. It got me into a routine of constantly sipping. My dietician said if I'm not getting the protein shakes in to make sure I'm at least getting water to stay hydrated. It will help with feeling nausea. After a few days I just kept doing it. It gets a little annoying at first to have the constant reminder to sip, but it helped me. Stay hydrated my friend!
  25. most insurance companies will cover it, but it's usually not part of their "core" coverage. In order to offer it, employers need to buy a rider for it. So although her company uses Cigna, they probably decided not to have their policy include the optional bariatric surgery rider.
