    ESG Surgery 03/14/23!

I like the Premier Protein Clear, they have tropical punch and peach, they are pretty easy to get down. Congratulations!
  2. I am definitely missing my marks on protein, mostly because I just want cold, sugar-free sports drinks and my energy is just fine so far. I have been forcing myself to consume more protein drink. If I were actually getting what I was supposed to, I'd be less happy about the effort 😐
  3. (surgery 2/22) I was indeed released on Thursday! I had the bright idea to go on a long walk outside on Friday which I realized was probably a mistake since I hadn't had much for calories and I also only made my water and protein minimums that day. I didn't measure the distance beforehand and it was nearly 1.5 miles and around 9 degrees outside. Saturday I met goals and working on that for today as well. I was ordered oxygen for sleeping (they said 75% get sent home with oxygen orders, but I am in Colorado so that may be a factor) and I'm also giving myself Lovenox/Enoxaparin shots twice a day. Today I'm able to get out of bed a lot easier, so I think my incisions and everything are healing well. My surgeon used anesthetic and Dermabond on them and I have had no issues with fluid escaping or anything. I'm back to pre-op weight on my home scale, the hospital weighed me much closer to my first appointment weight but I was fully clothed with shoes on.

    7 Months Out, Need Motivation

I think the best way to resist temptation is to avoid it as much as possible. Don't buy junk food. If it's not around, you can't eat it. I take it a step further and use online grocery shopping (pickup or delivery) so I don't even have to go into the store. I shop mostly from my favorites lists that only contain healthy foods. On the rare occasion I go into the store, all of the temptations are in my face and I find myself tempted to buy something I shouldn't, "just this once." The more you have to face temptation, the more mental effort it takes to resist and the more likely you are to give in. Another thing that helps is having healthy, delicious foods readily available. If you like to cook, go on Pinterest to find healthy recipes that you look forward to trying. I live alone, so I always have a lot of leftovers that I freeze in individual portions, so I have a variety of healthy meals that I can easily grab from the freezer and heat in the microwave with some cauliflower rice. I meal prep a bunch of salads every week and have a variety of Skinny Girl salad dressings on hand. I eat a lot of sugar-free Jello with sugar-free meringue (made with pasteurized egg whites so it's safe to eat raw), and sugar-free meringue cookies. I also eat protein bars (Built Bars are my favorite) as a healthy-ish treat. This is so important, and it's really easy to take for granted once you lose the weight -- to forget how hard it is to live with morbid obesity. I recently saw a guy at work who was so big that he looked like he was struggling to walk out to the parking lot, and my heart broke for him because I remember being that big. I don't really think about it much anymore, but there was a time that I dreaded walking to and from the parking lot or up a couple of flights of stairs because it was so hard when I was carrying an extra 200 pounds. And that's not to mention all the social stigma on being fat, which I never want to experience again.
  5. 'm so excited (nervous, anxious and scared too) that my ESG is in 15 days!! 🙌 I have put having WLS for soOOOo long, it's very surreal that it is so close. I have been stockpiling protein shakes, powders, soups and have all my supplements and medications in order. I feel as though I am ready for this but am still unsure how I will be able to abide by the strict protein intake for the 45 days as it (and I"m sure all protocols require everyone) me to drink 8oz of protein every other hour from 8am to 9pm and water on the off hour. I work in an office setting that doesn't allow me to have food liquids at my desk (secure location) and have to excuse myself to the break room for food. Breaks are not every hour and I can't imagine I can guzzle the protein drinks in less than 5 mins. I will have to be creative?! It's going to be a LONG 45 days! I'm thinking of using the protein waters, has anyone every had any of them? Any suggestions on any of them? Thanks! 😀

    7 Months Out, Need Motivation

I am lucky, I cant do fatty greasy foods. So a lot of take away food is off my menu. I have never been a cake or biscuit eater but I can eat chocolate, pop corn and baked snacks. I buy them small single serve packs that limit my intake. I ration myself to only have one in the evening if I have managed to eat all my protein

    March 23 buddies yet?

I can only have one small meal per day of 3oz protein, unlimited non starchy veggies, 1/4cup starch. The rest of the day is liquids and non-starchy veggies. Day 10, all liquid.
  8. Hey BigAndTall, glad to hear that your surgery went well. Mine was also 22nd and I came home from hospital yesterday. I’m doing ok with water but the food/vitamins/meds regime is a bit challenging. It seems like I need to be constantly sipping on protein shakes or water. And fit the liquid meds in too. I’ve written a schedule for it so hopefully that will help. I have some pain around my incisions but it’s getting easier every day
  9. @learn2cook I’m not doing to well I can’t keep down a protein shake but I’m only 18 and my mom won’t take me down to a doctor saying how I’m find cause she got a vsg in Mexico and came back better then I’ve been doing for the past month I can’t drink anything and it’s not good
  10. Hi Everyone, I've benefited immensely from reading all the content on here and am wondering if you guys have helpful advice for me. I'm 7 months out and have been losing nicely till about a month or 2 ago. My appetite and hunger have returned and I'm finding it very difficult to stick to my plan without cheating, reach my protein and fluid goals somewhat, and push myself to work out. Some days my cheating is so bad, it scares me. Obviously the scale hasn't moved downward, it only keeps fluctuating by a few pounds according to my intake. I haven't seen a significant loss in a while. While I'm so happy about my weight loss, I still really want to lose more and am scared about being able to maintain the loss if at 7 months out it's so easy to eat so much junk. I'm slowly building new habits, but at the same time, old habits die hard. I want to hear from you what helped you stick to your plan like glue, what motivated you day after day? How do I resist the urge to cheat? Any and all advice welcome. Looking forward to your replies!

    Low On Iron

I don’t understand why your doctor wants you to speak to your dietician about your low iron levels except to maybe review your current diet & see if something is missing or there is something extra you could add. Has your doctor has you to arrange an appointment to discuss your results & prescribe or recommend an additional supplement or an infusion if needed??? Unless your level isn’t that low & dietary changes should be enough??? 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’ve heard it can take some time for your iron levels to go up again too. Low iron levels seems to becoming more common these days for all women not just bariatric patients. I have several friends (none have had surgery) who need to take iron supplements or have transfusions because of low iron levels. Never knew one 10 years ago. PS - I have a protein absorption issue thanks to my gall removal. Not related to my sleeve. (Also stopped me absorbing my HRT meds - God bless the patch.)
  12. Had my sleeve on 2/22. Excellent experience so far. Manageable pain, am able to get fluids down, and I can definitely feel the restriction. By biggest issue is the lack of savory options I see out there. So far, just microwaved broth which is pretty good but I can't wait for the next phase. No head hunger nor stomach hunger that my liquid diet isn't satisfying. Down about 29 pounds since Feb 1st when I started dieting before my 2 week pre-op LRD.
  13. Doing good over here. I find it a bit hard to get all the protein in and all the fluids

    Sipping all day long

Hey there. If you're only a few days post-op like me, your body is probably still retaining fluid from when you were on an IV in the hospital - it will take several days for that to disappear. I was sleeved on 2/21/23 and have been struggling with the liquids too - but the system I'm using seems to be working well. I just have a timer going off on my phone every 15 minutes while I'm awake reminding me to drink. It is a very slow path, but it will get easier over time. I was lucky to get in 50 g of protein and 50 oz in one day for the first few days, but now that I am getting up and moving around more it seems to be easier. I promise it will get easier - just stick with it. It would be awful to be dehydrated and nauseous at the same time.

Where did you buy unjury protein mix? Never heard of it. Today I got creative and made a soup from the list of allowed items. I sautéed some mushrooms celery carrots and green onions with garlic and threw them in some chicken broth, simmered on stove for a few minutes. Honestly delicious and filling. I forgot I can have zucchini too so I’ll add that next time. had a protein shake for breakfast and then some baby carrots for snack. 2 16 oz bottles of water and then maybe for dinner lll do a tomato and cucumber salad with just some lemon juice squeezed on top It might not be so bad after all

I’m drinking premier shakes, caramel. Yes, a bit chalky. I also have premier protein water. I also have Unjury protein mix, chicken soup flavor. Pricey but very, very good. It is savory. pother than that…Deer Park water…64oz per day. Knowing that I would be drinking A LOT of water, I invested in a water cooler and have 5gal bottles delivered monthly. In the long run, it will be cheaper than slugging bottled water.

Thanks for the encouragement! What are you drinking? All these protein shakes have such a nasty chalky aftertaste which makes it hard for me to want to drink even water afterward because of the gross taste in my mouth i Think I’ll ask my doctor if sugarfree mints or gum are allowed

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

No regularity issues recently. However, I add the Kirkland fiber to my Gatorade (Zero with protein 50/50 water dilute) when I'm at work. I've also been eating salad kits with cabbage lately. So, that'll work too.

    Urea Level is High

make sure you're drinking lots of fluids - that can help flush things out. Even for those who aren't having potential kidney-related issues, lots of fluids are recommended if you're on a high-protein diet. I just read that being obese can also affect kidneys and their related values - so it could be that your urea level was high even before surgery (did they do a baseline on your blood values prior to surgery, including your urea levels?). I also read that having WLS normally improves all this. I agree with Arabesque - we sometimes have abnormal readings of certain values (high liver values seems to be a common one, for one) when we're in the rapid weight loss phase. They usually normalize after a few months, when weight loss slows way down. But your surgeon and/or dietitian should be aware of that. I hope someone gets back to you on this - if nothing else, for peace of mind.
  22. Collagen peptides, you get about 15g of protein pre 8oz serving of water. I have some that are berry, berry lemonade, pineapple-orange. The clear protein drinks are also available, basically the same thing just pre-mixed and varies flavors. I also put unflavored collagen peptides in my jello when I made my own, I used 2 scoops to 2 cups of jello for a 10g pre 1/2 cup serving of jello. Even though it unflavored it does give the jello a bit of a flavor. Hope that helps.

    Muscular Weakness after Bypass?

I haven't heard this one before, and I've been hanging out here for eight years. People do lose muscle as they lose weight, but getting enough protein and regular exercise keeps will keep you from getting too weak. And you're right - you would think nutrient deficiencies would show up on your blood tests. I agree with toodlerue - this is kind of baffling.

Only allowed sugar free drinks, water, protein shakes and for snack a few choices of vegetables its been really rough so far/ how bad would it be if you cheat? i just want a boiled egg or some tuna salad. I’m so not a sweet person I need something savory. Even plain Greek yogurt will do
