    3 Slips, No More Band.

He said that it's possible that it could go back into place, because it has in the past (but granted it wasn't this bad before), but he said it will probably keep happening over and over again. He said the band itself is malfunctioning and it wasn't my fault. I don't blame the band entirely, but from the number of personal friends I've known who have had the same thing happen, it can't be just US. KWIM? I go in on 8/1 for the results of the EGD and I think that is when they will schedule the removal. I'm going to INSIST on another fluoroscope so they can see it and determine if it really does need to come out. I know, he said it does right now, but I'm praying it corrects itself. Even then, for some reason I get the impression that he's going to start limiting the amount of new bands he does, and strictly focus on Sleeves and Bypasses. He made a good point in saying that people who have had weight issues all their lives really do need a PERMANENT solution, and although LB was supposed to be permanent, it's proving not to be. He said he just got back from a conference and the general consensus of all the doctors were they are appalled by the complication rate with the bands that have been in 2+ years. I haven't researched a lot on the net, but my little circle of people I know who are going on 2+ years with the band, out of 4 of us, 3 have had slips and 2 need it to come out. Thanks for all the comments, everyone. I bawled my eyes out all the way home yesterday, and then drowned my sorrows in a bacon cheeseburger and fries last night (emotional eater much?!). I know, it wasn't the best choice. OK, it was absolutely the worst thing to do (and my body is reminding me all day what eating crap feels like), but I was sticking it to the man!! Won't be doing that again. LOL
  3. The nuclear stress test is the most accurate, but most insurance co. Will not pay for it unless you have a Hx. They inject a radioactive isotope into your bloodstream and then have you lay on your back while the machine takes photo's of your heart from different angles. The isotope shows up as a bright red/orange in your cardiac arteries showing the blood flow to the heart. Then you get on the treadmill and the goal is to get you 85% of your max heart rate for 5 minutes. They immediately give you a 2nd dose of the isotope and take a 2nd set of pictures. Before and after, the after is with your heart under stress. They compare the 2 sets and can determine any cardiac arterial blockages, and what %. I have had cardiac surgery (angioplasty) to insert a stent in one of my arteries based upon my stress test results. A severe blockage would have meant cardiac bypass surgery. (open heart) A cardiac arterial blockage will most likely result in a infarct if gone unattended. I now have a stress test every year. This was before being banded, and all a result of being obese. The Anesthesiologist is the one who is most paranoid about cardiac clearance before putting someone under.
  4. I have been researching this form of bypass and am leaning towards having it. Is there anyone on the forum who can give me more information ? Anyone who has had it done or know someone? Much appreciation.

Hi! I had lap band in 2008 and I’ve now gained my post op weight back. I lost about 30 pounds but never got to my goal weight. I have PCOS which doesn’t help. My surgeon is recommending plication with my lap band or mini gastric bypass. I’m leaning towards plication to go the less invasive and less expensive route. Anyone have both lap band and plication experiences to share?
  6. Happy Healing, i have heard revisions are becoming more common ( from the sleeve). im excited and nervous i have the sleeve and i barely eat as is.
  7. I have heard that they have to put a date in when they submit to insurance, but that that date is/can be later revised once the approval is in.

I had surgery on Oct. 9th, 2013 by Dr. Chandra Hassan. RNY Bypass. I also worried something would go wrong on testing day, it didn't! Don't worry about something that hasn't happened yet! My surgery stay was of normal, the staff of Dr. Hassan's is excellent. You will be happy with everyting, I promise you, they are simply the best!. You have a great support system there. I myself could not handle the pain, so I had called and three days later was back in for pain management. Don't let that scare you though, everyone is different. I am not sorry I did this and am well on my way to being in better health. Any other questions,, ask please....You will be great!
  9. Camille, sorry to hear you've had such a hard time. Life can definitely set you back. Just start with the next meal. Keep the sweets out of the house. You can do it. Why can you not eat sweets with bypass? It doesn't seem it would be any different.
  10. That is a great idea! I will keep this list handy while I am waiting as well. Found out I have to go thru the dietary classes and psych eval again. I am revising from the band to RNY. But while I am going thru this..we found out I have a hiatal hernia and a small stricture at the top of my stomach. Going for an EGD soon. May have to have band out now and wait 6 mos for the bypass. Depends on the damage to the tissues. Hoping all goes well and I can have both at once. Don't want to have 2 surgeries to recoup from. So glad to hear others moving forward on their journey's. It has been quite an inspiration to see other's work thru struggles, and sharing their victories. Keep up the good work and don't worry too much, this will be a great thing for you.
  11. I'm a 33 year old married woman, and I have been obese my whole life. At my highest, I was just over 400 lbs. At 30, I was diagnosed was with diabetes, and I've been trying to conceive for over 8 years. I recently decided I had enough and moved ahead with the journey to weight loss surgery. I chose the sleeve because bypass seemed too altering. My consultation with my surgery was on Oct 28th. and I weighed in at 388. I was lucky to get my nutrition appt that Friday, November 1st. (385.5) At my next nutrition appt., I get my surgery date which I'm gunning for January or very early February. So far I've been pretty good. I feel like God has been taming my appetite and backing my will power. The last I weighed myself I was around 379.6. I have been tempted of course, but i've been holding out. People have noticed the changes. I do a Protein shake for Breakfast. I eat lean protein first then the veggies, very little carbs for all other meals. I did a serious cleanse of my normal diet. I'm very proud of myself. I feel better. I sleep better. i need to start the exercising soon. My concerns are these: if i want to get down to my ideal goal weight of 150 is the sleeve ideal? my surgery said not really but exercise and diet would be very vital. i've been diabetic for 3 years, on insulin for one. I'm worried with the sleeve I will still be diabetic. I just hate to have hind sight bite me in the butt!
  12. Hi Happy2BMe1 Like you I am a bit worried about the mortality rates for the VSG. However, I have still decided to have the sleeve instead of the band. My surgeon who is one of the leading bariatric surgeons in the UK said that he hardly does bands anymore. They have too many complications and a lot of people need additional surgery. I think the VSG is a good alternative and not as dramatic as the bypass. However, there is still a risk, but hey what's the risk of you staying at 345 pounds. You are relatively young and might not get any problems with your weight, but problems do often come up when one gets later. I've just weight up the pros and cons of doing the VSG vs doing nothing and the VSG won even though I've got very young kids (and I certainly want to be around to see them grow up). In the end, only you can make this decision though.
  13. Had my hiatal hernia repaired at the same time as bypass.

    Other's opinions

I've reached an age and a place in my life where I don't give a dang about other people's opinions. I told everyone and when I got that look from a couple of them, I just shrugged it off. I expected some folks to not understand, and I really understand them not understanding!! A couple of years before I even heard of the sleeve, my husband suggested the bypass and I gave HIM the look - how could he even suggest such a thing?!?! Just do what is comfortable for you.
  15. My friend used Dr. Spivak for gastric bypass, and if I hadn't found Dr. Kirshenbaum in Denver, I would have used him, too.

    shocked

I couldn't imagine living in the spot light and being open about my weight struggles and surgeries. She's very brave to continue to let people into her daily life and struggle but I think unfortunately people use her as an example of why wls is a waste. I feel bad that she is still struggling but I never understood why she went with the lap band. I think she's a spokes person for them. If I was her I would of revised to a DS and not the lap band. It's sad that she's only managed to lose 30 pounds in the year that she's had it in :/

Regaining is a big fear of mine- and I am assuming everyone else's here. That's why I stay on this board, keep my lifetime membership (and make time to work out), take the stairs, eat Protein first, and the minute that scale says 170 I cut back- and get back into the 160's again. (that's my sweet spot) I know first hand 5 lab band failures- almost all weigh as much as they did, if not more, and 3 gastric bypass failures-- gaining and can't stop, including a 550 pound patient that goes to my support group as well. I feel like we got lucky with the sleeve-- and thank goodness my surgeon talked me out of the band, and signed me up for the sleeve! Maintaining for more than a year now!

    2 questions....from a pre op newbie

If you eat too much sugar and your digestive system responds with a surge of fluid and it cause inflammation and nausea as well as tachycardia and sweating and a lot of pain. It usually happens with bypass, rare in the sleeve as our food is still digested normally..
  19. It's prob easier if you do a quick search and then scan the images of full bypass VS mini but mostly it's less surgery time, less invasive (only one new connection to make) easier recovery and less risk of complication with just as good and most believe even better weight loss. The stomach pouch is longer (like the sleeve) but they do bypass a little more of the intestines (around 7').

Did anyone like the band better?

HATED my band. Caused me so many issues. I am 1 month out from my revision to sleeve and I love it. It does everything for me that the band didn't. 3-5bites and Im done. I never had that with the band. It just made me throw up all the time.

Did anyone like the band better?

Nope! My only regret is that I waited so long. I have had the "effects" of a slipped band for about 2 years...and today is 2 weeks post-op for my revision. I'm just getting to advance my diet to pureed today...haven't had any heartburn, "stuck" feeling, am able to sleep with my head completely flat... Good luck with your surgery.
  22. I was approved for bypass this week and have a tentative date of January 8th. It took a long time to get my approval and during that time did a lot of additional research and now feel the sleeve is the right choice. Has anyone been approved for one type of surgery then after insurance approval decided on the sleeve? I'm not sure what to do. My current surgeon doesn't do the sleeve so I will have to find a new surgeon too.
  23. Has anyone had this done? What's the pros and cons of it over lapriscopic? My surgeon decided to leave the practice and now ill be seeing the other surgeon (which things happen for a reason) and he does both lap and open but prefers to do open. He's pretty honest and reather do open so, that's what I'm thinking of going with, partly because he sutures and they disolve with open instead of staples being in my body forever with lap. I just wanna hear if anyone has any thoughts on this. I know its one long cut (which I'm ok with) instead of 4-6 different little cuts. Anyways just curious because surgery is going to be in april and wanna decide before this on what may be better. I am definitely leaning towards the open though, also what's the down time for both?

    The Price of Mexico

Hi Star and welcome! Dr. Aceves total cost is $9500USD for first time sleevers (meaning not a revision). That price includes all pre-tests, one night in a resort, the surgery, the anethesia, and 3 nights in the hospital, all medication and all post-op tests. You also get a copy of your blood work, your chest x-ray, your GI xray and your operative report when you check out of the hospital. It also includes transportation from San Diego to Mexicali and Mexicali to San Diego. He is running a special for July of $8950.

    never lost weight

I know at 2 girls here that had surgery the same month as me that have not dropped the weight both have tried and we've shared ideas together. They were/are very committed. One went to have the bypass done and the other one just posted last night and is still trying. It does happen at no fault of the patient but it is rare. I would still recommend this procedure over any others.
