  1. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it's your local Mini Gastric Bypass fan again! Yay! Someone asked the other day about MGB (also known as OAGB, Omega Loop, Single-Anastomosis Bypass) and I stumbled across this meta study. 26 studies were included (aka huge sample) Primary surgery was either version of the band or a sleeve gastrectomy (restrictive procedures) Mean BMI at time of revision to Mini Gastric Bypass was 45.7 Mean BMI at Year 1 was 31.5 Mean BMI at Year 3 was 31.4 Mean BMI at Year 5 was 30.5 That's right - they lost on average 14.2 BMI points in the first 12 months and kept losing weight up to the 5 year mark. So if you're considering revision, maybe give MGB a look? I love mine.

    Sleeve or Bypass? Apprehensive...

I had the same question and my doctor advised bypass due to my sweet tooth. Surgery scheduled on the 24th of this month. Praying for a positive outcome for everyone on this journey.

    Self pay questions

I did self pay in the Washington, DC area. I got a sleeve. I consulted with 3 places. I wound up going with a good program that was $19k (give or take) for the whole package, but it varied from hospital to hospital. If I had gone with the "big name" hospital in DC, I would have paid at least $26k for the same procedure (roughly, their communication sucked and I suspect my quoted number wasn't very accurate. I don't recall what the 3rd price option was. Price wasn't my driving factor - I liked the practice I went to best after the consults - but it was an added bonus. I don't remember what the bypass prices were. Anyway, the amount covered most things except additional pre-op testing like the endoscopy, chest x-ray, etc. I'd be careful about pre-op bloodwork. I wound up having to pay more than I should have if I had gone to LabCorp or Quest Diagnostics myself with the lab orders instead of getting them done at the hospital where my surgeon is based. The agreement included the surgeon fees, hospital stay for a routine procedure (up to two nights), anesthesia, all the random testing they do as a patient (i.e., bloodwork and such while admitted), food (haha more like broth and water), and follow up appts for a certain timeframe (I think a year, maybe 2?) It was all laid out in my self pay agreement. Honestly, it is the best $19k I have ever spent.

    Self pay questions

I'm self-pay. My package price basically includes everything from pre-op appointments with medical doctor, dietitian, surgeon, nurses - surgery and recovery - 2 years of follow-up including bloodwork. If you're paying yourself anyway, you have options beyond just sleeve and RNY: I have to throw in a recommendation for the mini gastric bypass. (Long-time readers are sick of hearing me tout its advantages, but hey ).

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

Good luck to everyone having surgery tomorrow! I've got my final pre-op with the surgeon tomorrow. I'm expecting to get my pre-surgery diet instructions. I'm not nervous... I'm anxious to get to surgery day. It's been a long 9 month process of jumping through hoops with very low expectations of insurance approving my revision. Now that they have, I just want to get on to the next stage. I am ready for this stage. I'm all in. It's hard because my partner is having a sleeve bypass 1 month after I have my revision and she's in a much different mindset than I am. She's like "after the liquid phase, well be able to have whatever we want, just a bite or two" and I'm like "nope, I'm making healthy choices, I've been through this before, it truly is just a tool that will help you start those healthy habits so they stick long term" My 50th birthday is two weeks after my surgery and she thinks I can have a bite of ice cream cake. I'm like, no. So we are having some of my favorite foods that she makes and my birthday cake Friday night. Still gonna have a bigger party actually on my birthday with family and friends but that's just to celebrate and the food won't be an issue for me. Wow lol that was a lot! I'm overdue for a session with my therapist. Lol
  6. Congrats everyone! I'm 16 days post op from gastric bypass and I can finally fit into the target XXL again. I was plus sized 2x/3x for a while there. Looking forward to XL. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app
  7. Hey. I'm about 16 days post op from gastric bypass so I have yet to know how this will turn out long term but to be honest, with this post op stomach, my hopes are high. Someone made a good point in the thread, with the surgery, you don't feel like your body is conspiring against you while trying to lose weight. The pre op diet was so hard because of my actual old anatomy and physiology. Now post op, I first off haven't felt real hunger since my surgery and when I do eat, I can actually hear myself and my body. It tells me when to stop or take a break. Obviously we have the ability to gain weight back but you have to also have faith and discipline, like everyone says it's just a tool. Mental health counseling has really helped me understand why I binged so much in the past. I don't think I'd be where am I today without my psychologist and psychiatrist. I had a lot of moments in my life where I thought I can just do it on my own, but every single time I was still binging when I was having off days. I lost about 70 lbs naturally in the past and then gained 100 lbs back because I never worked on the important part, listening to my body and finding healthy coping mechanisms. The rest of the time was spent miserably losing 10-15 lbs at a time on unstable crash routines. When I reached my highest weight and injured my knee, I knew I needed medical help. I saw a psychiatrist who was able to diagnose me and get me medicated then did 8 intensive months of counseling with a psychologist on my eating behaviors in order to prepare for surgery. I only lost 25 lbs before my pre op diet (that was a 8 month time span) and that didn't matter because the weight comes off post op. I'm now down 45 lbs total and have about 70lbs more to go until I'm in my ideal range. As long as you feel ready, you've followed your surgeon's orders, and you understand the commitment that this takes then do it. It's seriously an amazing tool and a privilege to be on the journey. I wish you luck with it and sending love to you and your husband on your journey. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hi! I signed up for the VSG on April 26th but recently decided to switch to the gastric bypass due to long-standing GERD. Now I’m impatiently waiting! I’m also doing it in Mexico (Tijuana) due to self-pay with bmi <35.
  9. I don't know your age, situation, weight, other health problems, etc. If you think you can do this without surgery, then do it without surgery. I am not being sarcastic. It is a huge, life-altering decision and if I could do it without surgery, I would. But the surgery isn't just another way of saying, "Eat right and exercise." I understand what your husband is saying: with or without surgery, you will have to watch what you eat and stay active. But I struggle to explain to people how the surgery changed me, in terms of my relationship with food. Bypass/sleeve doesn't just make your stomach physically smaller; it changes the hormones from your stomach. My cravings for food are so much weaker and different; I don't crave rich foods (I am much more likely to crave saltines than cake). More than any time in my life, I see food simply as fuel rather than a source of pleasure/joy. I choose foods as much for how they will make my stomach feel than how they taste (my stomach will find it much easier to digest fish than steak, so I am much more likely to order salmon at a restaurant than sirloin). It's easier to stay disciplined when you don't even feel the same tug toward the foods that destroyed your old diets.
  10. So I’ve been in preop phase for 8 months in prep for bypass. Long story short I switched doctors after 6 months with old doc. I love the new doctor and almost ready for surgery, just took some time to get all records from old dr. Now my husband is on board and he’s seeing new doctor to go through WLS as well. We went to our first support group meeting last night and now I’m very confused and I think he is too. We now have this mindset that “we can do this”. He hasn’t been one to read or research much as I do, and he was amazed at all the lifestyle changes and tools you use to rewire your head and to be successful. He says well if we can learn that now I think we can totally do this! He bragged on how far I had already come and changes I’d made and he said I really think we can do this. I’ve kinda had that feeling all along but then again here I am 8 months in and only 25lbs down. Tell me this is normal or tell me something, anything? Isn’t it only like 3-5% of people can actually lose the weight and keep it off without surgery? I’m just so at a loss on what to do now….
  11. check with your clinic. That could be symptomatic for a stricture, and you're still in the "window" for one (they almost always occur, when they're going to occur, between one and three months post-surgery (they're very rare after you hit the three month mark) they occur in about 5% of bypass patients. And they're an easy fix (I had two - at four weeks out and again at about eight weeks out)

    Two weeks out

I'm glad you're recovering well. Keep us posted on your progress with the revision.

    Recovery time

I could have gone back after 2 with my bypass (I had a desk job)

    Recovery time

it depends on the person - and also what kind of job you're talking about. I had bypass - and a desk job. I took three weeks off, but I could have gone back after two.
  15. it does for most people (not all - but most). I had bypass - hunger comes back from most bypassers sometime during the first year post-op - I'm not 100% sure about sleevers.

    Two weeks out

Today is two weeks past surgery. Recovery has gone well with no complications. My surgery was a revision from sleeve to bypass for hernia and GERD issues. I've dropped 10+ lbs in the two weeks which seems right in line (I was only at 227 on date of surgery). Per my surgeon's plan today we could progress to soft solid proteins, so it was great to have an ounce or two of sliced deli meat for lunch. Only downside is that they do an internal stitch to hold things together and that pain is real. I'm told it'll go away 4-6 weeks following surgery but until then it's the only downside to an otherwise good recovery so far.

    Dr Sanborn - Chattanooga TN

Hey! Just seeing this - didn’t get notification. So happy for you! How are you doing with surgery next week? I got in with Dr. Sanborn who was also nice and said I’m a candidate for bypass or sleeve so I’ll need to decide🤷🏽‍♀️. I’m 1/2 done with my pre op / insurance requirements. How long did it take to get you scheduled for the surgery?

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hi All I go in on March 21 for gastric bypass starting my pre op diet.
  20. I had stage 2 (lipo) done today. I'm feeling good. The leftover Percocet from stage 1 is a blessing. Dr. gave ok to use it instead of the typical prescribed Vicodin. I will probably have a small amount of loose skin on the thigh gap and love handle areas but nothing that a tiny nip/tuck won't take care of. I'll post pictures in a couple of months when most of the swelling is gone. As far as the TT recovery (7 wpo), I can now ride my bike; cough/sneeze/laugh without tearing up; but still no heavy lifting. I consider house cleaning heavy lifting (wink, wink) so I guess hubby will have several more weeks of maid duty. I was still wearing a compress garment 23 hours a day even though I don't have to wear it more than 12 hours. Dr. said the longer the better and I don't mind it since it's not summer yet. Now I'm back to wearing it 24/7. Dr. said plan on the scar revision this fall and my scar is healing nicely.
  21. Really, really look into the weight loss with mini gastric bypass, also as revision. There's studies out there and they're all in favor of the mini. Weight loss is greater in every. single. study. Also, I know it really isn't meant as such, but it's kinda condescending to call RNY a 'full' bypass (not that you did that). It's just as much of a bypass as RNY

    Skin

Okay after a long and hard 3 moth decision I've decided to get the bypass after I read about the side effects of my GERD possibly getting worse even cancerous. Anyways my question is when I'm losing weight how do I prevent myself from getting excess skin?

    After Care

Hey everyone, I have some exciting news, I got approved for gastric bypass this past Monday and, my surgery date is next month on the 22nd. I was also wondering what types of food did you guys eat after 2 weeks like what could you guys tolerate and, very lastly what can I expect before, during, and after my surgery?
  24. I have acanthosis nigricans which is the very unfortunate side of PCOS, anyways I was just wondering if anyone who had the bypass and has this skin condition how does your skin look now? did you guys have to have some type of laser, or any other treatments afterward so it can fade?
