@@Smdnght28 The sleeve is done quite frequently at my practice - probably just as often as RNY (Gastric Bypass @@mr1121 ). If you really want the sleeve I'd get a second opinion (your surgeon sounds a little old school).

I have heard several people state that they are taking less meds now. I would check with the doctor if you are feeling faint. You may not need it anymore. Would that not be wonderful. My SIL had bypass and she does not take her meds anymore.

Hello: First, congratulations! Second, any regrets? Any issues you want to share with someone who's considering bypass? What Vitamins and/or supplements do you take? Do you, or did you have #2 issues in the bathroom postop? Do you feel hungry much? Thanks for your time answering my questions. Sue -

Is it possible to prevent Band comps??
gcravener replied to Faytona's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My band was to loose then to tight Dr. Kuri loosened it and said he thought it was to lose, but I still cant eat Pasta, bread, most meats, cereals, grains and a lot of vegies like broccolli, carrots no salads at all or I PBing..Ive been drinking juiced vegies and boiled chicken thighs and sometimes they wont go down..I cant eat eggs no matter how they are cooked. I had kidney stones because of the band also....Ive lost 17 pounds since Dec. 2004 and fight to keep that off....I joined curves and go 3 times a week, haven't lost any inches, and Im having a problem with my heart beat now..because of electrolites...if it didn't scar me more Id have the band taken out. ..I feel like my last hope of a easier way to lose is gone now....I realize it was a tool to help me lose, but in my case the tool didn't work....I'm so happy for the ones that it did work for...maybe Id been better off with a bypass..to late now...I spent every penny I had on the band.........Guess I'll just be a big girl and keep doing the best I can do with a very low metabalism its going to hard.....Good luck to everyone and God Bless.. -
Hi: Joine the BC WLS website. This site is mainly for BC residents who have had gastric bypass or gastric band. Just post and you will get all sorts of information. You have to apply to be a member. Also, there is a monthly meeting of Gastric by pass patients all over the lower mainland and one monthly meeting for gastric band patients at the Lions Gate Hospital. You have to be very agressive with the BC Government. If you doctor recommends it, you could also be sent to Washington State. I know of a gastric by pass patient that went that route. By attending these meetings you will get all the accurate information your require. I had a BMI of 50 and now down to 40.5 and I could not get help so went private. If I waited any longer I would have died. Since the band, I have a cleaned our RRSP but I also have had my medications reduced considerably. You may want to try going private. Doddie

Day 5 of Optifast, 16 days until surgery
G2gomackenzy posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi all, my name is Shawna. I'm 41, a working mom and wife. I've been a "big girl" most of my life. Had a few good weight loss years but the weight always managed to come back again. I've always been very active but could never keep weight off. After having no kids to having my baby girl, then 2 step kids coming to live with us all in 7 months, anything about myself went out the window. Anyways, I'm in a much better mind frame now, love life but still struggle with the battle of the bulge. My doctor suggested bypass surgery back in 2012 and I finally agreed for her to refer me to the hospital. My first "session" at the weight clinic was in February 2013 which was the info session on your options and you could sign a sheet saying whether or not you wish to have the surgery. I signed "yes" and started the journey of Bypass Surgery. It took a long time to get here now in June 2014 but well worth it. I've had more info sessions, met with a behaviourist, nurse, dietician, the surgeon and finally the anaesthesiologist last week. I've had EKG, cardiograms, blood work, stopped drinking altogether, and given up a lot of "treats" but could not be in a place to have this done. I'm ready for the next stage, BRING IT ON!!!!!!:-) -
Hello Everyone!! well i had the sleeve on the 9th of last week, and i can actually say im doing fine. only thing is my left side hurts a little and my wound where the drain is tries to open up, word of advice, if this happens to you, swab it with some peroxide and put some gauge over it, everyday once after cleasing. i guess you could say im writing this because, this is a major surgery, a life changing event, if you have been overweight all your life like i have, this could be very dramatizing and very unfamiliar territory. i started with the weight loss in june (my dr was giving me phentremine) and this does work, i started off at 322!!! i am now down to 279 and thats with the 2 weeks and counting of the liquid diet i am currently on. its hard i must admit, but one question i would like to ask to anyone who has had this, is it ok if i eat a peanut or 5 (lol) im serious!!! i drink the water, the broths and i are at a constant battle of should i drink it or not-and needless to say i win. i was eating sugar free popsicles for a while, but the dyes in them will make you run to the bathroom everytime so i really dont encourage that!! after surgery i was a whimp i must admit, i cried and cried for the gas pain that was in my chest, i kept thinking, is this what they mean by gastric bypass? but that soon enough went away, along with the intense pain in my shoulder, needless to say the liquid vicodin gods are helpful. if anyone would like to just talk about it with me please feel free, i think i need more encouragement and inspiration, cuz if you havent had this, like i mentioned before, if youre not prepared its a big step and you can instantly go into a depression if your not ready. lets all be in this together. oh and by the way walking alot really helps, it makes it better. until later God Bless nae

3 Weeks To Go! Here Come The Nerves!
kansasgirl replied to DDFinn's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Who was your coordinator.i was going to be using christi but she just emailed me and said that she no longer works with Dr. Kelly which is who i want to schedule with she said this: I would be more than happy to assist you in your weight loss journey. Unfortunately, I no longer represent Dr. Kelly as a surgeon. I have had numerous complaints from patients of being charged for things they were not supposed to be charged for. In November, I personally coordinated 11 patients for Dr.Kelly, of those 10 of them were charged extra for hotels, additional surgical costs and hotels the night before their surgeries that were supposed to be provided in their surgical packages. I am not saying anything against his surgical ability, but I could not in good conscience send patients to him and have him pull out whatever additional charges he feels like for that day. It was not what I want to represent and he had no intention of changing this practice, there have been other issues as well on the business side Anyone else hear of this? This had been through a lighter me. I need to find a new coordinator i guess because i would only feel comfortable with Dr. Kelly doing my surgery. -
Surgery Date Taking Too Darned Long
Ldimples replied to CocoPebbles1030's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Did a lot of planning, making sure my family would have enough food for the month of November. Now that I have finish planning and have nothing but my thoughts, I am feeling a little depressed. Not sure why, but while I was running around trying to make sure that everything was set for my family, I didn't have to really think about much. But now everything is done and I feel like focusing on myself is making me depressed. I saw a woman at my job yesterday eating a bag of chips and I thought to myself I'm going to miss some salt vinegar chips. I'm scared, I'm scared of not being able to eat the foods I want to eat, I'm scared of the pain after the surgery, i'm scared of something going wrong during the surgery, I'm scared of not being successful. Having second thoughts. Just woke up feeling like I wanted to cry. Not to mention I am hungry and I don't feel well. The waiting for the surgery is the worst. The days ate going by so slow. I keep looking at the calendar. -
Victoria, BC Canada Support Group?
rainbow_runner replied to Curlycat3's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Su. Yeah, I'm not surprised nobody at Dr. Amson's office got back to you. Their office admin is a mess - in fact it's one of the reasons I gave up on having gastric bypass. All worked out in the end, though - I am deliriously happy with my band and soooo glad I didn't go the RNY route, even if I did have to pay for the band myself. Worth every penny! In any case, it's possible that the support group offered specifically for Dr. Amson's patients might not accept patients who have had lapband or bypass done by another doctor (Amson only does RNY). However, there have got to be other, more generic bariatric support groups in your area, and it's just a matter of finding them. Hopefully if you can reach someone at Amson's office they can give you some info on that. Are you aware that there is a bariatric conference going on in Victoria the weekend of March 27-28? First of its kind on the island, apparently. It's called Beyond Bariatrics, I think, and anyone who's had any kind of bariatric surgery can go. Registration fee is $120 and includes dinner Saturday night. I'm attending. Google "beyond bariatrics victoria" and you'll find the link. -
Last appointment with dietitian today....
gabbykittyvsg posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So, I had my last appointment with the dietitian today. She said she'd try to get the note done and sent to the coordinator by the end of the day (or just an email to say the note is in the system). I did some shopping after the appointment (pre-op diet stuff) and when I got home I checked my online patient portal and found that her note was indeed DONE!!! My appointment was at 2:30 and the note was done and in the system by 4pm. So, insurance submission happened today or it will be done first thing in the morning!!!!! Oh, and since I'm a sleeve I don't have a 10 day liquid diet like my surgeon's RNYs do, I have a 10 day low cal high Protein (750-800 cal/day) diet. I'll be on full liquids for 3 weeks after. when the coordinator called me yesterday she said that because my primary insurance is Medicare I may have approval in just a few days!! I thought there was no way my surgery would be before Thanksgiving, but now it's looking like it will be as early as mid-November. I'm not worried at all about being on full liquids or purees during the holiday season. There may be some awkward explanation going on but oh well, that's what we call life. -
HOLY BANANAS!! Fast Track and I am still debating
cmandrews13 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So I met with the surgeon's office today. Had the first meeting with the dietician, filled out the gigantic pile of paperwork and met with the doctor. Got some super amazing news from the coordinator of the program, which is not only does my insurance pay for the psych eval ($200), but also pays the program fees for the meetings and everything ($600). I was blown away. Then the super awesome amazing news - while my insurance carrier normally requires a documented 6 month dietitian/food class, my particular group does not. So that requirement is waived. On top of all that, when I went to check out and make my psych eval appointment, the nurse said - "Can you do today? Like in 15 minutes? She has an opening and she is right across the street." I said "sure!" and off I went. So in one day, I got my first appointment, first dietitian meeting, most of the paperwork and the psych eval done. Basically, I just have to attend one informational class/workshop/meeting and I am good to go! I feel like I at the wheel of a speeding train! As far as the debate, I had pretty much decided on Sleeve. I didn't like the idea of the bypass and I knew there were more complications with that procedure. But I do have Type 2 Diabetes and the RNY is this particular surgeon's gold standard for bariatric surgery. They said ultimately it is up to me, but now I am not sure. Anyone have any thoughts one way or the other? I am 44 years old, have approximately 150-170 lbs to lose and plan to live at least another 50 years. So for me it's mostly about the long term effects and while I know there is way more data about RNY, I just get skeeved out at the idea of re-routing my guts. -
Not if the procedure is done laproscopically. It sounds to me like her surgery was the old style where they "open you up" They don't usually do bypass that way any more, nor "lap band" (the name comes from that ... the lap refers to the surgery type, laproscopic) They make a few (1-6)incisions, insert instruments/camera through those incisions, do the surgery, remove camera and instruments, and close up the incisions. Recovery is much faster; many lap band patients go home the same day or day after.

My mom had gastric bypass a few years ago and when she came home she had medical plastic bags that collected fluids from her open surgery scars. I am considering getting a lap band and was wondering if these bags/ pouches were attached after surgery? Thanks

Stomach made too small from surgery
Babbs replied to kellyann311's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
With the sleeve surgery, not likely. With the bypass, it's not the size of the pouch but the malabsorbtion that usually causes an issue. -
I have always been riculed about my weight. I finally decided to do the ultimate. I have been to the seminar and after talking with friends who have had bypass I have decided to go that route. I will see the surgeon on July 3 and will get the ball rolling. I know I qualify but I am still nervous. My family will support me but my husband does not want me to do this. I just need some positive support.

Day 2 of liquid diet
CherieRyde replied to flmommyof2's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yeah ... days 2 - 4 sucked. But day 5 was MUCH better. Take everything one day at a time. Also, most (if not all) of us have had moments of "CRAP!! What did I DO to myself" moments. I just went though almost a MONTH of that, but am fine now. Remember .. if your surgeon is skeptical about a fill, then listen to him / her. Mine was skeptical, I still wanted it, so he gave me a half-fill. I should have listened. I spent a month only being able to eat certain mushies and soups. Last night was the first time since my November fill that I was able to eat solids without it getting stuck two bites in. -
Only someone post-WLS will appreciate this pic

And what are some of these yummy meals? That's an awesome idea!!!! Are you banded, sleeved or bypassed -- just out of curiosity? I was sleeved April 2014 and now maintaining at 150ish (although I may still try to push myself to my stretch goal of 145!) I love Pioneer Woman and often tweek her recipes to double the Protein. Yesterday I made skillet chicken lasagna but I doubled the chicken, added an extra clove of garlic and put 1.5 teaspoons of red pepper flakes in it as I found the original recipe a tad bland. It's easy to make and delish! I stayed away from carbs early on but started eating a small portion of Pasta once I hit my goal weight at 10 months out. Another staple I make is Pioneer Woman Hamburger Soup. The first time I made it, it turned out really bland. The next time I tweaked the seasonings until it had more flavor to it. It's loaded with meat and vegetables and reheats nicely. Both recipes can be found by googling Pioneer Woman and then the recipe name. Super easy to make. I store them in the ziplock 1 cup plastic containers which stack nicely in the freezer. -
Signs that my pouch is full? and other questions

Pre op diet day 7....help!
vickyd replied to enchilada72's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You should be fine but my suggestion would be to go ahead and stop drinking them now since you can't drink it after surgery. Also, you will most likely have headaches due to withdrawal from the caffeine and you would much rather go through that now than when you are recovering from surgery. I haven't had a diet coke since November (when I started my pre-op diet) and I took a sip of my son's yesterday and I told my husband that I couldn't believe that I used to be so addicted to it...it actually tasted horrible! -
Gastric Bypass Surgery is a Pre-Existing Condition
snowfie9 replied to crosswind's topic in Insurance & Financing
I can totally believe that. There are a lot more long term complications to gastric bypass than is common knowledge. It's just one of the many reasons I'm opting for the sleeve. -
Hello all, well not sure how all this works, today is my first day on the site... pretty cool stuff! i am 35 yr old female, live in missouri. I have been going thru the steps for insurance qualifications for about 4 months now, getting closer, yeahhh...will possibly be banded end of november.
