It really depends on what your doctor says. I had my surgery on the 20th and right now I am still in the clear liquid stage (no shakes yet). I sip a drink every 10-15 minutes. However, this week, I can begin to add pudding and yogurt. Each doctor's recommendations are different as I have seen others start right way with some pureed foods. -

Hello everyone I was just sleeved 9/19/23. Currently in the liquid diet stage. I am drinking a protein shake. And really not getting enough liquids so I’m working on that, but what can we have? Broth, sf jello, water, but I see some people saying they are eating pudding and yogurt? Is that allowed? -

I highly recommend G. Hughs brands..low cal, no sugar low carb, I personally love their thai chili dipping sauce (if you find it buy several it sells off the shelf quick), teriyaki and pineapple ginger sauces taste great as well! Their yum yum sauce is a huge seller, I think its #1. As far as soy sauce, I personally wouldn't - too much sodium. Instead try something like Braggs liquid aminos, gluten free or coconut aminos they taste just like soy sauce or as Nicolechip said lemon with seasonings! I've also used Greek yogurt with season packets like ranch... -

Have your team ruled out a stricture ? Any time that liquids are being vomited back up, alarm bells should ring. It is a easy fix I believe. Lots of us have issues with nausea and not wanting to eat foods and drinks that were our go to ones before surgery. I didn't do Protein drinks but have read on here that there are ones with sugar substitutes that really give people problems. My husband is diabetic so we have lots of sugar substitutes and every one of them make me vomit. I use real sugars if I need any. Lots of us find we are intolerant of dairy, nuts etc. Our new stomachs are really fussy. I also had a filthy taste in my mouth from the ketones for months. I still take Lansoprazole 30mg twice a day and when I need it Gaviscon I could not face the puree stage, just thinking about the texture made me heave so I missed that stage all together and stayed on homemade soups, yogurts, cream cheese, pate until I could go on to foods that were squashed with a fork. One tip that I was given was to have my drinks warm. My stomach accepted them better. I never drink plain water, I have never liked it. I add a little fruit juice or add Bovril or Oxo stock cubes. -
First, great job on the weight-loss. I've noticed I can eat more and I'm starting to get my appetite back. It's so important to follow the plan... get in your protein (and some extra if needed). I aim for 3 oz per meal or about 80+ grams per day. Keep it lean- chicken, fish, shell fish, and plant protein. Make sure you're getting your veggies in. Cut up a veggie tray for the week and enjoy with a tablespoon of hummus or guac. Low fat cheese and yogurt. Keep measuring your food. It's so easy to overeat. Fluids are really important to stay on top of. Another thing that helps is to stay busy and keep your mind off food when you're bored. Exercise is also helpful to boost your mood and metabolism. Just be careful of the after workout munchies. It's totally a thing for me. A once on awhile treat is important too. My nutritionist said that if we always deprive ourselves, we'll regress back to old eating habits. So, for example, I love onion rings. And we we go to dinner that my husband orders them, I'll have one... or whatever I may be craving. Small amounts of something special once a week is totally within the plan. Everything they taught you before surgery is for life. Focus on not deviating from that too much.

It took me for ever to reach my goals. Like 3 + months. They just told me to do my best. Protein yogurts were my saviour, 2 of these and a pint of milk a day and I had all my protein. Drinking seemed to take all day and all my waking night too. I had my surgery in coldest winter, so hot drinks were easiest for me to manage, although they did get cold before I drank it all. After meals if I found myself thirsty, I would suck a popsicle , its a fluid. Once you can drink your ounces you will feel amazing. Its really worth while persevering, it does get easier soon I had to keep going back a stage because eating 'normal' foods was so difficult for me -

I could not do the puree stage, too grossed out. I made soups with lentils, bacon, carrots and sweet potatoes with mild chilli/curry flavours. I could regulate the thickness with stock or milk, add yogurt or cream cheese. I had lots of milk with banana and peanut butter blitzed in -
Hello All! So grateful to have found this forum. I’m 5 days post-op. My dr didn’t recommend anytime on a clear liquid diet and instead put my straight into a purée diet. I’m feeling pretty nauseous and also just malnourished and constipated. I feel gross. I’m not actually repulsed by food. My husband had a plain sandwich that looked AMAZING. I tried pureeing a few recipes but have found that the easiest thing just seems to be blending up some plain Greek yogurt with some berries or 1/2 a kiwi and adding some high quality protein powder. Does anyone see any issue with me doing this each meal? I get grossed out by the prepackaged protein drinks and this feels a bit healthier. Any staple puréed meals I should try? Thinking about trying some oats.

How to get all my protein in?

Here is my suggestion for a natural breakfast smoothie with around 25g protein, which does not rely on protein powder and can be made dairy-free: 1/2 c Greek yogurt or soft tofu (about 10g protein) 1 Tbsp hemp seeds (3g protein) 12 oz milk or soy milk (12g protein) 2-3 oz frozen spinach (gets you some veggies!) 4-5 oz your frozen fruits (tastes yummy!) Blend, blend, blend, and you're done. I'm pre-op but this is what I have been having every morning for the past month or so, along with a big lunch salad with chick peas, black beans, and salmon in it. I like that smoothies don't require a lot of thinking and have no added sugar or anything artificial. Personally, I add a scoop of whey for an additional 21g protein, so if your nutritionist is cool with that, I highly recommend it. You could do pea protein if you can't do dairy. I honestly don't see many ways to reach those goals given the restrictions you've been given and how little you can eat right now, so definitely talk to the nutritionist for a reality check on those numbers! -

Two days post- op from my gastric bypass. The abdominal pain is the worst part particularly in bed finding a good sleeping position. I don’t take pain meds at night but they probably would help. Sipping water and getting proteins in is a full time job but I’m getting the hang of it. My favorite drinks so far have been the unjury vanilla premade drink and the unjury chicken soup. I plan to try yogurt with unflavored protein powder in the next few days. Best wish to everyone wherever you are in the journey! -
Just had my second follow up with my Dr. (who I'm not very impressed with anymore) and would like some help figuring out how to get all my protein needs in. I am supposed to get 80g a day but only eat 3 times a day 5 hours apart, no snacks, and I can only physically eat 4oz at a time Not allowed cheese or protein shakes, I don't really like yogurt. No added carbs that aren't already in food ( which isn't that big of a problem). I am also supposed to be adding vegetables in but don't see how I can eat vegetables and get my protein. I just requested a meeting with a dietician and hope they can help. Just a little discouraged after my appointment and needed to vent.

Today marks 4 weeks from my surgery date. My incisions are largely healed, and the surgical glue/scabs have fallen off. There is clearly more healing happening inside, where I can't see. My surgeon calls this 'surgical stuff'. The spot just under my left ribs is particularly tender. Is it my stomach? My hiatal hernia repair? It doesn't pain me too much.
My weight loss slowed down a bit the last 2 weeks, with the addition of purees. I've enjoyed things I never thought I would ever eat, such a dish I'm fondly calling 'tuna pudding'. Buffalo chicken dip with canned chicken is amazing. Surprisingly, ricotta bake was meh. Yogurt is still a staple. I've started experimenting with decaf tea. I would LOVE a cup of coffee, but no word yet on when I can have it. Soft foods are just around the corner, and all I can think of is tender, flaky white fish. And some soft asparagus.
I haven't had a ton of energy. I have to sit a lot and my walks are short and slow. I'm hopeful that when I can eat a little more I'll feel more athletically inclined. Next week, I'll try the commute to my office two days a week, which involves a lot of walking, stairs, and carrying my laptop. We'll see how that goes.
I had an overnight trip this past week, and packed a small cooler with my pureed foods. It was hard to be around others eating delicious things while I slowly spooned down curry chicken salad puree. Fun fact, not drinking while you eat curry chicken salad puree is a fun game. Play with your friends. I resorted to serving it with a bit of greek yogurt on the side to cool my mouth down. Driving multiple hours without caffeine or road snacks is also a new thing.
I've tried on some old shorts and work pants, to see if they fit yet. Some do, and some very nearly do, which is exciting. At least I won't need to source smaller clothes for a while. I'd saved all my favorite things down to about a size 14. Hopefully they are all still in style.

"Tuna pudding." 😂 But I have to say that the buffalo chicken dip does sound good!
On my program, caffeinated beverages are allowed, so I've been slowly reintroducing caffeine. I've started with unsweetened tea, just 6-8 ounces, and that has not upset my stomach. The first time I tried straight up coffee, my stomach said, "Nope!"
Wishing you good luck with work. I'm back to work, and move kinda slow. Colleagues there have begun noticing my weight loss; I've only told them about the hernia surgery, and that I am going through a physician-directed weight loss program. I'm not ashamed of having surgery, I've just always tried to keep my professional and personal lives separate. We had a luncheon yesterday and I pointed out how many carbs were in all of the items, and how I'm not allowed to have them in my program. Then broke out my 2 ounces of hummus and some miso soup with soft tofu and pretended like that was what I really wanted.

Hey everyone, I just wanted to take a moment to share my experience and vent a bit about the difficulties I've been facing after my gastric bypass surgery. It's been tough, and I could really use some support and understanding right now. Firstly, one of the biggest challenges I've encountered is the loss of taste. It's incredibly disheartening to try different food and drink options, only to find that nothing tastes good anymore. I've experimented with various yogurts, protein powders, shakes, and even crystal light flavors, but unfortunately, the enjoyment I used to get from eating has vanished. Even something as simple as finishing a bottle of water has become a struggle for me. To add to this frustrating situation, I've been dealing with a persistent metallic taste in my mouth. This unpleasant sensation affects how everything tastes, making it even more difficult to find pleasure in eating or drinking. Despite my efforts to maintain good oral hygiene by brushing my teeth four times a day, the taste persists, and it's incredibly discouraging. On top of these physical challenges, my energy levels have plummeted, leaving me feeling depleted and drained. It's hard to stay positive and motivated when you're constantly battling fatigue. Unfortunately, this has taken a toll on my mental health as well, and I find myself struggling with depression. It's a heavy emotional burden to carry, and I often find myself crying myself to sleep at night. I apologize if this post sounds like a downer, but I really needed to vent and share my experience with people who might understand. If any of you have gone through a similar situation, I would greatly appreciate any advice or encouragement you can offer. And to those who are willing, please keep me in your prayers. The support means the world to me during this challenging time. Thank you for taking the time to read my post and for being there for me when I needed to let it all out. Together, we can get through the tough times and find strength in each other.

Not sure what you mean by gross ingredients? I mostly went with broths and some cream soups in the 3rd week of clear liquids, I'd mix one can broth to one can cream soup. My fourth week sent me into soft foods which was mostly eggs, ground sausage or beef and some fish. Week 5 I moved into chicken. Chicken being so very dry it seems harder to digest than anything else, ground beef was so much easier. I can't much do the protein shakes, the only way I've been able to choke them down is to literally put in a blender with some extra protein powder & yogurt and ice and make a smoothie/milkshake thing and top with keto whipped cream. I use it more as a dessert bc I can't drink all that sweet stuff in the early morning. Not much of a breakfast person but since this surgery I wake up famished but I guess 3-4 oz only takes so long to digest and if I eat at 7-9 pm by the time I get up at 9-10 am it has been a long time. I got the Walgreen's extra protein shakes, small town, limited choices around here. -

Hi everyone, I’m new here & hope ur all doing well. I had gastric bypass on 8/15. I did well overall. I had never been under general so that was a bit off putting when it was hard to take deep breaths after. They jumped me right into stage 2 and sent me home the next day. I’ve been meeting my fluid goals and doing mostly ok on my foods bc I’m good about eating super slow. I had a couple of unpleasant experiences. One was dehydration bc I took an extended shower and I must have missed my timer-that was scary. The other was that my husband measured the baby food a little over 1/4 and I felt overly full. ffwd to today. I was excited to begin stage 3 since I’d be taking my vitamins & trying textures. I was told to have a poached egg & 1/2 cup greek yogurt for breakfast (seemed like a lot but ok I’d try). The egg took forever but I ate it (this was around 7:45 am).The yogurt was not going to happen but I thought it could wait. I soon started to feel horrible. I felt (still 3:15 pm)feel like I ate a truck of concrete. I hear gurgling noises and even water feels like I can barely take it in. I called and they tell me I need to “wait it out” (??) Nurse says I should have eaten the egg in 1/4 increments ( I was never told this), as I said it took me forever. She told me to chew a Gas-X and use a phenergan suppository for nausea.She told me she is not so worried about how much (or little) I eat today, but I must stay hydrated. TBH, I can’t think of eating a bite! I am terrified of that “dumping” syndrome. Has this happened to anyone here? I have other health issues-I have MS. This is stressing me out & I can’t even rest bc I am so uncomfortable. Can anyone share wisdom and/or hope that this will pass & improve? I am feeling fearful & wondering if this was a bad decision Thanks for reading my long msg Emme

I'm scheduled for bypass on Sept 7th....I start my 7 day pre-op diet Thursday. I was a little anxious about doing the liquid diet but my surgeon has a different plan. i will be having a protein shake for breakfast, one serving of fruit and a light Greek yogurt for mid morning snack, protein shake for lunch, a string cheese or hard boiled egg for mid afternoon snack, dinner is a lean cuisine or healthy choice frozen entree with a good source of protein (approx 300 cal) or 3oz of lean meat/fish and a serving of non starchy veg and an evening snack of a string cheese or hard boiled egg, and drink a minimum of 64oz of water. No liquid diet at all! -
So I have an appointment with my nutritionist on the 29th. I will make sure to make this a priority question on my list for discussion. I know the “manual” and Google says no snacking. But meals and protein shakes are getting old with me REAL fast. And before I force myself to eat a meal or shake and feel crappy after? Id rather a snack like fruit or chickpeas makes me feel better and accomplished for the day. I seem to be doing really good with cabbage beans and peas. Seafood such as shrimp and salmon. And fruit such as melon. My current prepackaged snack items have been babybel cheese protein yogurt pickles sugar free pudding and jello. I recently added probiotic soda poppi. I open it and wait for it to get flat so I can safely drink it without the gas problems that follow it.

I agree with @The Greater Fool. It doesn't have to be eggs. It can be soft/shredded chicken, tuna, or beef, a protein shake or high protein yogurt, or even oatmeal with added protein powder. I would cook my oatmeal til it was a little dryer and then add 3-4 tablespoons of my favorite flavor of protein shake for added protein.
