    GERD a problem for anyone?

I have decided to go for the bypass.I am not cutting my stomach. It has been through too much band torture.I want a revision to the "Gold Standard"that's it.

How did you choose your doctor?

First want to say that people who have the band can share some of their experiences- good and bad. The band was not good for me but great for my dad. I think it's great to understand ALL options when gong in for a surgery. I went in with blinders as I didn't want anything that was going to change my insides and many say the same. There are plus and minuses from all surgeries and really need to be aware of options that's why they are there. By the way- I was handed 2012 lost 25 lbs gained back 3 times that amount and now revised to sleeve 5 days ago. Whatever a person decides on they should view and understand ALL.

No more Lap Bands in my future :(

Could you send it my way also Kit? I'm another looking at a revision. Have to do SOMETHING. I can't believe I'm back up exactly where I was when I got banded 8/05. The hopelessness is suffocating. I haven't seen any Penni updates. Are there some threads I'm missing? Did she disappear along w/ LaMadam & Vines? Kare

No more Lap Bands in my future :(

any updates? i was so frustrated after gaining 20 pounds in the first three months after having my band removed, i was ready for any re-routing, stapling, removing -- or whatever they might want to do to my body to get the weight loss bus moving again... then i realized -- i've ALREADY been through enough with my band surgeries. (in, revision, out). i know what to do and how to do this...i need to at least give it a try. i've been exercising 5-6 week and limiting carbs. i quickly lost five pounds...after that i've averaged only one-half of a pound a week....if that's not discouraging, i don't know what is... no wonder we all quit! but i persevere and the good news is, while some weeks i stay stuck, my downward trend continues.. AND, what's great is this weight, because i'm doing it in a more healthy way -- doesn't come right back on if i stray for a day or two...and all the band weight would come right back... i still have a long way to go -- want to lose another 50 pounds. went to my nutritionist recently complaining about the slowness...she said, "what's your rush." that kind of made me think. and, one final thing... i have to say the 10+ pounds I've lost somehow seems like so much more of a victory than some of my band weight lost. NOT to take away from the effort that's required to make the band work. SO...if you decide not to go the surgical route, as of today, remember you DO have it in you to manage the weight! Don't forget that. Good luck! Elizabeth banded 08-28-03 revised 03-10-05 removed 03-13-06
  5. Almost 8 yrs VSG and had severe GERD beforehand. It significantly decreased post op but I've remained on PPI medication the entire time. I was down to 1-2 total doses per week, however I had some regain over the last year and am up to THREE TIMES daily!! It's everything to do with how I carry my weight- all in my middle. While I was quite satisfied with the GERD being almost totally resolved initially, I'm fearful that even IF I lose the current regain it won't go away to the extend that it was in the past. I have been told by my bariatric team that a revision is likely the ONLY way to get the GERD to go away with 100% certainty. That sounds pretty good to me but I am quite fearful of surgery in general because I'm a nurse practitioner and we make terrible patients... I would love to know what the loss pattern was like for those who had the revision and can I plan to see awesome results? I mean, BESIDES the GERD clearing up? I am currently about 40 lbs about my ULTIMATE goal- I never reached that goal with my VSG, stopping about 12 lbs away from it...

    What about the boobies!?

I had implants pre-sleeve. The nice thing is that my boobs haven't shrunk visibly at all. In fact they look bigger now in relation to the rest of my body. The bad news is, my left implant has now become malpositioned due to the loss of real breast tissue above it and I will likely want a revision. Though I'm going to wait until I'm done losing for that. It's not really that noticeable. I notice it, but even my husband didn't notice it until I pointed it out to him. I was thin when I got my boobs. I pray they still look good when I drop these lbs.

I was thin when I got my boobs. I pray they still look good when I drop these lbs. I was "thin" too when I got my boobs. I had lift with implants done at the same time as my tummy tuck after having lost 90 pounds "on my own". But then I regained 80 pounds before I was sleeved. Now, post-sleeve, I re-lost those 80 pounds, plus 7 more. My tummy tuck held up GREAT through the re-gain and loss. My only issue is that I now have this malpositioning of my left implant. I don't know if re-gaining breast tissue pushed it around a bit and then it because obvious when I lost that new breast tissue again or what. All I know is that I will probably end up getting a revision. Not in a rush though. It's really only noticeable to me. My husband doesn't care and you can't possibly notice it if I'm wearing clothes or a bra.
  8. So it’s been a couple months are you going through with the revision?
  9. Elisabethsew

    Skinny time!!!!!

I have had my gallbladder out (lap), been banded (lap), and am now 5 weeks post-op from the VSG (lap). I have to say the VSG was the easiest of them all. I was worried about traveling home alone on a 6 hour flight but the pain was minimal. It feels like you did a ton of sit-ups and the more you move, the better you feel. You're both going to do great. WASA was sick when she had her revision and had a longer recovery but did great as well.

    Tilted ports and fills

until recently, my fills have always been problematic due to a tilted port. to clear, it's not flipped, just tilted downward. since the first few fill experiences were so bad, my surgeon finally did the 3rd one under flouro. that confirmed that the port was not flipped, but it didn't really help my doc stick the needle in. in fact, i was in the xray room for nearly an hour with 2 radiologists and my surgeons who all attempted to fill me! here's the strange thing. after several attempts and finally shutting down the x-ray machine, my doc gave it one last try. he pressed deep into my side, had me roll over slightly, raise my left arm (my port's on my left side) and he slipped the needle right into my port's sweet spot. since then, i've had two fills and he's hit my port on his first try each time. i'm not a dr., but i don't think it's necessary for everyone with a tilted port to have revision surgery. fwiw, my advice: try flouro first so that your surgeon can "see" your port. if s/he can get a feel for where it is and record a sense of the degree to which it's tilted, fills might get easier. best of luck.
  11. I am still here. I went home for 2 days but am back today they were prepared to do a revision tomorrow but we have decided to do a few more tests. The doctors are dumb founded at my condition and have never seen this happen before and my doctor has been in Bariatrics for years..,
  12. The docs came in today and said that if my swallow study doesn't show a problem that it may be a sign the my earlier issue with my sleeve being a long "J" shape may be the culprit. They think it may be twisting on itself when I eat or drink. If this is the case a revision surgery to a bypass will be necessary. Please continue to pray for me as I appreciate it and I will keep you updated - Kali

September 11Th Kaiser - Dr. Zane

Oh congratulations! Where are you having your surgery? Had pre-ops today and met with my doctor. I am a revision and he did say that if the scar tissue is really bad, he would remove the band, but I would have to wait a year to be sleeved. Hoping and praying everything is good and I will come out of surgery bandless, portless, and sleeved! Sunnymama10, are you on a pre-op diet? I was told to continue normal eating until 24 hours prior to surgery. Then it is full liquids and then nothing to eat or drink after midnight.
  14. I had my band to sleeve revision surgery on 5/23. I am doing well; healing, gaining some energy and progressing well with solid foods, but my weight loss seems extrememly slow, compared to others. I know "compared to others" is the problem and that we are all different and not supposed to compare, but you can't help but notice that some people seem to drop 50-60 pounds in the first few weeks. My SW was 225 and I lost 8 pounds on my two-week pre-op diet.and another 15 since my surgery date. I'm only down a total of 23 pounds. What am I doing wrong?????? Is anyone else who is a band to sleeve revision also experiencing slower-than-expected weight loss?

    Slow weight loss?

Hi I too am feeling like I am losing slowly. My mom keeps asking me why I am not losing weight, but I have lost. I was 239 before pre-op diet, then I was 126 pre-op and now I am 212. My surgery was on June 2, 2014. When I was banded I started at 280 that was in 2009. I weighed my lowest two years ago after my knee surgery which was 185, I had problems with my band and as you see I was back up to 239 at the time of my decision for the revision. I think as previous band patients we lose bulk of our weight then so when we have a revision it seems to move a lot slower. I feel somewhat discourage but I know what I have to do to make this tool work for me. I afraid of going to work next week and getting all my Protein in as well as eating relaxed and well. good luck

Age, menopausal and under active thyroid

I'm looking forward to joining you on the loosing side too! I am 53, also have hypothyroidism/Hashimoto's and had a full hysterectomy in December of 2014. I'm revising from LapBand to VSG-just waiting on insurance approval/surgery date. I'm hoping that VSG will finally give me the opportunity to get to a healthy weight. I was down to 200 and stayed there for almost three years with the LapBand, but since I started experiencing swallowing issues, my weight has increased back to 235. I'm okay with losing slower, I just want to lose. I have an entire wardrobe of smaller sizes that I can't wear anymore and I really liked the way I felt and could move, etc. You know, they say 50 is the new 30:)
  17. do your research and don't depend on comments from anyone . each person has to make their decision based on how they think they will do. The difference is how drastic you want to go. Lapband is no walk in the park either and unless your are sure you can be pretty compliant you may opt for something else. I did not want to have a radical rearrangement of my intestines or removal of my stomach. My husband had esophageal cancer last year and keeping his nutrition up was a major problem. Had he only had 20% of his stomach I doubt he would have survived. long term thinking is important. Lapband is revisable or removable if necessary. the other surgeries are for life.

    Slow weight loss?

I have learned your body is going to do what it's going to do. I'm 7 months out and am down 45 lbs when a lot of people have already reach goal. I'm also a revision patient, had the band in 2007 and converted to sleeve November 20, 2013. Just stick to the rules and you will lose, slow sometime and sometimes fast. I will give you an example, for the past 3 months I have not done anything as far as weight loss goes, I've bounces around with the same 5 pounds for months. Everyone says after month 6 it slows down and I was really worried because it was already slow but suddenly from month 6 to 7 my weightloss has done the opposite and I'm almost down 10 lbs this month, so everyone is different. Focus on you and your journey, that's what I have to keep telling myself as well because it's easy to compare yourself to others. Best wishes to you!
  19. It is just a pipe dream at this point, anyway, because the insurance company specifically said that I had to be at a 40 BMI for 5 years. I've been reading that the mini gastric bypass is not as expensive in Mexico. That might be the (only) option if I want a revision.

    Band to sleeve - reflux

Hello, I have had the band for 12 years now. I did initially lose 80 pounds but have gained 30 pounds of that back. I have had no fluid in my band for a few years and still suffer horribly from restriction and re-flux, aspiration, heartburn.. list goes on. I have an appt in 2 weeks to see a surgeon who will hopefully take it out. I did find out that my insurance will only cover 1 procedure. So if I am wanting any type of revision then now is the time to do it. I am considering the sleeve but hoping that I dont still have all of the issues with re-flux and heartburn. Let me know how things go.

    Band to sleeve - reflux

I had reflux at the end of my band life because it was too tight and needed to be removed. I'm now starting my 4th post op week with my revision to sips DS and haven't had any kind of reflux or anything similar. Band to SIPS/SA-DI/LOOP DS 8.8.17 HT: 5'6ish HW: 242 SW: 226 CW: 207 GW: Healthy

    DS vs Sleeve

Hi Paxie, Some surgeons only offer and promote what they can preform. It does not mean they are not excellent but they have a vested interest in keeping you as a patient Money. Please do your research first. dsfacts.com is a great site. There are 2 surgeons in Mexico on that list neither of which offer discounts. Some times you get what you pay for. I am not implying anything negative just check out all your options. It's your life. Get all of the information you can. With that said. I revised from RNY to DS Dec. 2012. I was considered a light weight (which seems unreal) at 240 and 5'6" and 39 BMI. I now have a BMI that fluctuates between 19 - 20 DS is a very complicated surgery. After care is a life long commitment to supplements and eating high Protein and fat. Not doing so is not an option. But it is a very effective WLS. I am happy with my choice. Make your carefully. Best, Whit

    RNY November 2017

Hi all! So I had Lap Band surgery in 2014 and lost about 100 lbs. Only to start having chest pains that my doctor said were caused by my band. So the fluid was drained, and back came all of the weight lost (except 10 lbs.). I asked for revision, and was denied by my insurance, but after writing a letter asking for an appeal, they have reversed that decision. Yay! Now back to life. Surgery for revision to gastric bypass is set for 11/07/2017. Excited scared!
  24. Hey folks, Next Friday I'm off to paradise. Paradise for me, being the sunny white sandy beaches of the Maldives (staying here if anyone is interested). It's the first actual holiday the hubby and I have had since getting married five years ago. Usually when we go away, its to visit my family (which leaves us more tired than when we left lol) or for work conferences. Whilst it truly sucks that I'll just be on mushies there, something tells me their mushie fish will be nice and fresh hehe. Anywho, because of the revision surgery, I now have the fresh incision sites again. I know those aren't meant to be sunbaked, but does that mean simply to put sunscreen over them or to put bandages over them? Thanks in advance!
  25. Hi, everyone! I can't believe I found this forum after 8 years banded! Looks like a lot of wonderful info and people are here! I'll try to be brief with my overview.... Heaviest was 364. Banded Dec. 2008. Currently, 258-264 (depends on the scale's mood). Lowest weight was 200 in 2014. After reaching that lowest weight, I had 4 major knee surgeries within 2 1/2 years (long history of knee issues after an accident at 9 years old). Those surgeries included 2 knee replacements and a full revision of one. I've lost range of motion with one knee and can longer do some of the things I once did. Thankfully, I can walk again and workout every single day. I also still journal and even weigh/measure my food. So, here I am... 60 pounds heavier than my lowest weight and the scale is just NOT budging. What the french toast??? I made an appointment with my surgeons office to see the NP and the nutritionist. I still feel restriction but could probably use a tiny fill since I no longer have the morning tightness. I have been eating 1400-1800 calories a day because I'm quite active. After a brief telephone conversation with the nutritionist, I'm going to alter my intake to 1200-1400 calories until I see them early next month. I keep my protein 75-100 grams a day and am doing all the things I'm supposed to be doing... with one exception. I drink water or unsweet tea with some of my meals. I'm a big water drinker and I eat healthy, natural foods. It's rare that I consume anything processed. I love my band and have not a single regret at all. I know that my metabolism is a bit wonky and I'm trying to get it fired back up again. For those that workout, are you working out in the morning? Evening? Are you eating before you workout? After? I'm trying to switch to early morning workouts before I eat. That seems to have worked for me in the past and hoping it does again. I'm open to hearing and trying new things! I'm also curious to know if anyone still journal's and if so, what is your caloric intake daily? Any thoughts, comments, suggestions are welcome! Thank you for listening and I'm looking forward to contributing anything I can to help others! ~ Jodie
