I was able to drive a few days after both surgeries (I had sleeve, then revision to bypass). I'm surprised they're sending you home the same day of the surgery however. Regardless, by Monday you should be OK to sit at a desk and answer the phone, just make sure you schedule some time every two hours to walk around a bit. -

I did sleeve to bypass revision. Same number of incisions, except they had to put a drain in for a week after the bypass. Same level of pain/uncomfortable, which was not a lot in my case. I only took the painkillers for two days and stopped because I didn't need them. I think I felt worse immediately after surgery when I had the bypass, but that may be because I was out for a longer period of time so I was more groggy. That was just in the hospital though, it felt about the same when I got home. -

While it is indeed standard practice to repair hiatal hernias with a gastric sleeve operation, I don't think any doctor can guarantee you that your hiatal hernia will never come back. The things I've read indicate that the gastric sleeve seems to make your stomach MORE likely to herniate (since a sleeved stomach is narrower and therefore can slide up through the diaphragm hiatus more easily than a normal stomach). I know for a fact that there are some gastric sleeve patients who have had multiple hiatal hernia repairs after the surgery (and others who were told to convert to a bypass because of their hernias). As far as the acid reflux issue, worse acid reflux is a known risk of the gastric sleeve. Some people are lucky and have no issues, but others do develop acid reflux for the first time after the sleeve or have much worse acid reflux after the sleeve. I would definitely ask him about why he thinks that this is not a concern in your situation and what his plan would be for how to deal with it if your acid reflux does get worse after the surgery. (If he tells you that you would just take a PPI for the acid if it gets worse after surgery, keep in mind that PPIs are not enough to control the acid for some people who have really bad acid reflux after the sleeve). You are smart to be thinking about these issues before your surgery. Personally, I deal with both acid reflux and a hiatal hernia after the sleeve (and no I didn't have a hiatal hernia before the sleeve - they looked for it when they did the sleeve). Knowing what I know now, I never would have gotten the sleeve. I think the bypass has stood the test of time better than the sleeve has - after decades of experience with the bypass, surgeons know the risks of the bypass and are better at managing them, whereas problems with the sleeve are often handled by just converting over to the bypass anyway. I’m starting the revision process because of gerd. Can anyone tell me if the pain from the sleeve surgery is comparable to the full bypass??

it is more of a problem with sleeve. Some people who are not willing to take the risk go with bypass instead. -

I actually don't think I qualify for the bypass surgery. But no I don't want the bypass. My acid reflux doesn't happen everyday. So I don't consider it a problem. But it's to my understanding it can become a problem after wls. -

My goal is 160 but I am a little taller than you and I also have bipolar and statistically we do not lose as much weight. Have you even considered bypass if You get heartburn already or is it really infrequent and the doctor thinks your fine with sleeve? I wanted bypass because you lose a little more weight but the doctor advised against it because of medication absorption. Well he left it up to me but his first choice for me was sleeve. They are both really good and relatively safe surgeries. -

I know that weight loss with revision is typically slower and somewhat less. Also if you weigh less on surgery day your loss will be less because you don’t have as much to lose. -

I had a revision from sleeve to mini bypass over two weeks ago and have followed everything to a "t" including daily walks and have lost like 3lbs!!!! When I had my sleeve 7years ago I was prolly 15 lbs down the first two weeks!!! Can someone say something to make me feel better ❤️🩹 -
Hey! I'm 23 days post op gastric bypass and feeling good. I can drink and eat without pain EXCEPT when it comes to water. It's a new thing, wasn't happening before but now when I drink even the tiniest sips of water about 20 seconds later I get cramping in my intestines almost like I need to go to the bathroom. Why is your surgeon keen on one rather than the other? Perhaps he's not as confident in the more complex intervention of gastric bypass? Ask, but rather than forcing the issue, perhaps see a different surgeon for another view.

Yeah, it's almost like we're more likely to need them. I keep saying this - the second we understand obesity as something other than a moral failure, this whole system needs to be revised top to bottom.

I’ll start…. bmi of 30.6 self-pay Surgery in Tijuana, Mx in April (hello….hot surfer dudes!) I live in a bubble on the gulf coast family freaked out at first, but overall supportive. I chose surgery (gastric bypass) as this was recommended to reduce or eliminate my 15-year history with GERD. Also bikini body would be nice 🤔

Thank you so much And welcome! So in general, bypassers seem to drop more rapidly at first, and then taper out - whereas sleevers in general do seem to have a more consistent weight curve during Year 1. Within these averages, there's a LOT of variance. It seems like you're doing everything you can, so definitely don't stress about it. Are you tracking your food?

Good luck! I had gastric bypass on Monday -no complications so far! Have been in a great deal of pain because they kept giving me the wrong kind of pain meds. Finally got percocet and it has helped a lot. Will be going home today, Lord Willing! My very best wishes to you!! -

Hi! I was sleeved in 2017 and converted to bypass in 2019. 1) Your reasons for conversion from the sleeve to bypass. I wish I did the revision as soon as my symptoms started (GERD) Instead of waiting couple years but I didn’t understand that I was actually experiencing GERD. I just kept trying to rework my diet to see if the symptoms never occurred to me it was something that I could not fit without surgical intervention. 2) What was the post op period like compared with sleeve? It was a easier than when I was sleeved, I don’t know why but I’m grateful 3) What is the best and worst part of having the bypass? To me the bypass is almost exactly like having sleeved, I can’t tell the difference Until I remember the difference in restrictive feelings during eating. With a slave restriction was high in my chest almost near my throat. With the bypass I feel the heaviness disinterest in food. Some days if I eat and dryer proteins source (like grilled chicken breast) I can feel both types of restrictions. 4) Any dumping issues? Yes I do experience dumping although it’s well managed now. I do have a few additional food restrictions than I did it with the sleeve. I cannot eat really sweet things. Or if I do it is literally one bite and I’m done. I rather not feel terrible over food if I can prevent it. -

I was sleeved in Dec. 2016 and did extremely well at first - I dropped about 120 lbs in about 6 months, reaching my goal weight. I had some personal/professional issues including losing my job, starting and losing my business, health issues with my kids, etc. and I slacked off and just started eating like crap again and gained almost all the weight back. I had GERD both before and after the surgery but was maintaining it with esomeprazole. I got the revision to bypass in Nov, 2021 and as of today am down a little over 65 lbs. and the GERD is gone. As for your questions: 1) Your reasons for conversion from the sleeve to bypass. - My doctor said I was eligible for a second surgery and that he needed to do an endoscopy to see if the sleeve was dilatated (enlarged). If it was, I could resleeve or switch to bypass. If it wasn't, I'd have to go with bypass. They checked and it was enlarged so I could get either one but he recommended the bypass due to the GERD and potential future complications with long term use of the medication or effects to my esophagus from the GERD. 2) What was the post op period like compared with sleeve? - About the same. I think I felt a little worse right after the surgery because it was longer. My sleeve surgery was 26 minutes, the bypass was about 3 hours. It was supposed to be a little over an hour but there was an issue with one of the stapling devices not being able to reach a certain area so the doctor had to suture by hand which took longer. I believe I felt much groggier and a little more nauseous, but after the first day it was pretty much the same as the first time. 3) What is the best and worst part of having the bypass? - Best part is losing weight again and feeling healthier. Worst part was having to go through the surgery again due to my own screw up. Also this time they put a drain in my stomach for a week which wasn't fun. 4) Any dumping issues? - Not even once. -

Had my original surgery 21 years ago. Scheduled for revision on the 21st. Also in the midst of the pre-op diet. Lost 7lbs already lol I hate that my Dr wants me logging my weight every day.

No mostly just GERD. I never made it to my goal weight with the band, so hoping to lose more weight with the revision. I just had my first appointment about a month ago to start the process, and I have one more visit with the dietician next week and then I see the surgeon for a pre op visit and I'll get my date then. We're thinking it might work out for the end of April tho. -
Oh interesting! Other than GERD, where there other reasons for the revision? I'd like to consider that myself. When are you scheduled?
