I chose the sleeve because I had no medical reason to need bypass. I was healthy with no co-morbidities. I was active so it wasn't imperative that I lose the weight as quickly as possible. I didn't want the higher risk of dumping that is often associated with bypass, nor did I love the idea of my intestines being rerouted. With the sleeve, I knew that I would most likely be able to eat whatever I wanted within moderation. (WRONG! Bread sticks like a b!tch, rice and Pasta make me vomit as does high quality ice cream but I am OK with it. It keeps me on track.) I felt like this surgery was less invasive and I loved the idea of the little grehlin factory b eing shut down, even if temporary. I love my sleeve. I am thrilled that I did it. The sleeve was the best choice for ME, but I would never tell you what's best for you.

9 months post op and still can't keep food down
catinaadams replied to GinaSq's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Gina, you need to get a dr to perform and EGD. I had the same issues and had 8 EGDS done one the first 2 years post op to learn After switching dr's for the last one that I had scar tissue that needed to be removed after that I was able to keep food down due to him "cleaning up that mess". Then bad news followed over the next 3 years I started to gain weight, developed a n ulcer and now a hiatal hernia in my new pouch. I am 6 years post op and getting ready to undergo a revision to remove the ulcer. This is something that you should now ignore. Please talk to your dr asap and if nothing else get a second opinion. -
6 months post RNY, mixed feelings/results
Roggr replied to bostonmama's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Do not blame your food cravings on emotional issues, Bostonmama. A good non-surgeon bariatric specialist can evaluate to see if medications or surgery revision is needed. Please do not beat yourself up for the cravings. Your struggles may be as much physiological as psychological and can be addressed by the right medical specialist. Yes, see a nutritionist and psychologist but there are a lot of experienced, talented obesity specialist medical doctors in the Boston area. -
Hey folks, Next Friday I'm off to paradise. Paradise for me, being the sunny white sandy beaches of the Maldives (staying here if anyone is interested). It's the first actual holiday the hubby and I have had since getting married five years ago. Usually when we go away, its to visit my family (which leaves us more tired than when we left lol) or for work conferences. Whilst it truly sucks that I'll just be on mushies there, something tells me their mushie fish will be nice and fresh hehe. Anywho, because of the revision surgery, I now have the fresh incision sites again. I know those aren't meant to be sunbaked, but does that mean simply to put sunscreen over them or to put bandages over them? Thanks in advance!

I think people can vary and doctor can take more or less out based on each case. I can eat a lot. I eat a Taco Bell beefy crunchy almost daily for lunch. Bad I know. But that is about what I can take for size. Weight loss has slowed but now am having to try more to lose and avoid snacks. I just went on a 7 day cruise and was able to eat with the family and it wasn't obvious during meal that i had surgery so am happy about that. I fear gaining weight. A guy I know had a bypass and later a sleeve and is still or again rather 100 lb over weight. Another friend had bypass and is 50 over weight up 75 from low as he was 25 under normal at point. A girl I work with had same doctor and did it in November and still can't eat but a half slice pizza and doctor is concerned that she has already lost 130 lb since November and looks thin but gross. Moral of story if you can eat a lot be careful what you eat so you don't gain. And if you can't eat much eat a bit more often and get nutrition in. Just because the answer on what you are able to eat Is different from someone else doesn't mean something is wrong.

Trying To Learn Everything I Can...
vanb0052 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello all!! I have been pursuing these message boards for a couple of weeks now and finally decided to join. Here is a little about me...I recently turned 30 years old and am currently at 370 lbs (I'm 6', and carry my weight pretty well). Luckily I do not have a lot of medical complications due to my weight...yet! I just found out that our company is changing insurance plans next year to Medica, which will cover bariatric surgery. I've already signed up for an information session with Park Nicollet, which is next week. Currently I'm still in debating over the gastric sleeve or the RNY bypass. As I'm just starting, I'm really looking for any information that you think would be helpful. I'm not even sure if I know what questions to ask. Thank you all in advance for your support and help! -
Now I'm confused. In one post NoJess says she is a revision from a band to a bypass and in another she says it's RNY. Are both considered a bypass? As for taking 7.5 warfarin a day, do you have clotting issues or is the warfarin for afib? I'm on long-term coumadin (generic for warfarin) therapy and I don't take that much, although yours may be higher because you're at a higher weight. I was actually recommended sleeve over gastric bypass because of the malabsorption issue. Because of clotting issues, I also had a filter/stent installed before and removed after surgery. The filter caught 2 clots, so it saved my life. I still think that Lacie has been very clear and very fair in her postings about what happened to her at Hospital MI. She has not made any aspersions against Dr Garcia's abilities as a surgeon. I agree that she posted "in real time" about her experience in Mexico. Maybe it wasn't sanitized to the sweetness and light some wanted about the hospital, but it was her real and honest experience. I can honestly say that I'd have raised cain had someone approached me wanting to reinsert the needle she showed. I actually cried before my filter removal surgery because they had such a tough time finding my vein. I had 6-8 sticks before they got one that actually worked. Had I posted that day, I'm sure people would not have liked my post either. I'm also certain that I was somewhat dehydrated on the day I had that last surgery, which made it more difficult for the nurses to find a usable vein. BarbieB, I think you'll be well cared for when you go for your sleeve surgery, no matter which surgeon you choose. I also think that Lacie's experience and willingness to speak out about it will help others in the future.

you have a bunch of phone calls ahead of you i thought most insurance companies require a 40+ BMI not 50+ do you have any co-morbities? can't figure why the surgeon isn't willing to do your WLS be persistent with the insurance company i would definitely talk to another surgeon if cigna is in your corner most insurances cover the lapband and gastric bypass WLS the sleeve has slowly emerged and being covered more often don't settle............it might take awhile but................ good luck

I fought for just about 12 yrs to keep the weight off only to slowly actually gain (you know 20 lbs down...30lbs up). I find myself at 5'4" and 270. I used to be an active person, until migraines became my new daily struggle. I was one of those people who said "surgery is for cheaters, or its the easy way, its even its gross and not needed..people just needed to try harder". I would honestly say i tried harder then anyone i knew personally to lose weight. I worked out so much and tried so hard and EVERY TIME I FAILED...i got right back up and tried again. I told people "you only fail when you quit trying". Well i can tell you i had finally worked my way through all known diets, exercise programs, and trainers known to man kind. I was still at it but feeling...vexed. concerned, depressed and like a failure. About this same time my mom secretly had gastric bypass. then my step father did too. I insisted it wasnt for me, but though...i guess it might be good for some people. I tried WW and fell off again. Honestly at that point i felt like a person who kept falling off a damn horse, sore, tired, hurt, afraid and drained. I felt dumb and/or lazy because i could not do this. And i had my moment...I cant do this alone, can i. That is the first time i heard those words in my head. I did some research and looked at all the surgeries and surgeons i found one i thought looked good and supportive and had great sucess. I went to his seminar..that is the best thing i have done (as for my weight) to date. I left there KNOWING this was for ME. I am some people and i deserve this and i learned why its so hard to lose weight (your body remembers its highest weight and constantly fights to get back to it). I learned it is not a cure for being fat, but a tool. Its like i was trying to fix a car but missing that one tool. I havent had the surgery yet. My insurance will cover in 10 more months and i am waiting (impatiently). But i will not waiver, i know..i know...i know this is what i need. this site only ever strenthens my feelings and spirit. Isee more sucess and i know even more. There are so many other surgeries out there but a seminar with a surgeon who does each of them, priceless. go to obesity help and view the surgeons postings by patients. When you hear about your surgery, you will know which one is for you. Love and care! -
Band Getting Removed on 11/30
teachermommy832 replied to teachermommy832's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
How interesting...my surgeon is Dr. Garth Davis! I am sorry to hear that you are having a similar experience. I only received one fill, and from the moment I got that fill, the hell started. My surgery was June 12, and with the exception of vomiting that kept me in the hospital overnight, I was fine. The first month was great--I lost steadily and had no problems with eating. I started having problems keeping food down soon after my fill in July, which caused them to remove 2 of the 3 CCs they put in. I continued to get worse, so in September, they completely unfilled me. You would think that I would be able to eat, but instead, I developed severe reflux and vomiting. Most days, if I can get a half-cup of Soup down without vomiting, that's an achievement. Dr. Garth wanted to put me in the hospital Thanksgiving Day, but I held him off by going on all Protein shakes until my scope procedure on Tuesday. He suspects that I am suffering from "band intolerance"--apparently my body isn't liking this band at all. He wants to revise to RNY, but that scares the crap outta me! I keep trying to tell myself that this isn't my fault, but it's really hard to accept that the one method that has actually worked in my weight loss battle may be making me very sick. I appreciate the feedback everyone, and I'm glad to know that I'm not alone, particularly in my saga with the Davis Clinic. -
Trying To Learn Everything I Can...
Oregondaisy replied to vanb0052's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There are many reasons that the Sleeve is better than the bypass in my opinion. I would not want to have my intestines rerouted and have to be diligent with taking all sorts of Vitamins and supplements for the rest of my life. I know people who have had the RNY and have to have Iron infusions regularly. Also, the gastric bypass pouch is very stretchable and weight regain has very high statistics. The sleeved stomach is made from the non stretchy muscular part of the stomach and stretches a little, but not nearly as much as the pouch left after an RNY. Also, when you have the RNY, you can never take any type of anti inflamatories such as Ibuprofen. The sleeved stomach is a normal stomach, just smaller. Weight loss is just about the same with both surgeries. If you do a search up above in the right hand corner in the search menu, you'll find many explanations about this. Hope this helps some! -
Hey Fab, I was very sorry to read your story. But I have to tell you that I am jealous that you're scheduled for revision and I'm not. I can't wait to get mine out and no telling when I'm going to be able to afford to have it done. There is a patient in my doc's office whom I've befriended who had the same symptoms that you have. She had a revision to a sleeve and she is one happy camper!! I hope that everything goes well for you and this is the answer to your problems.

First--Hello LBT Ive been reading forums and blogs for a few days now and I feel like I know all of you already, a feeling that I love. My nerves have been a wreck lately so I was extremely grateful to find this site and even more relieved that I can blog about my experience(I love to write!) Sighhh. Ok so lets get started. I was born without a thyroid gland. I have been fat since birth lol. Although I think this 'worked' for me as a baby and toddler(I think I am the cutest baby since sliced bread) When I was about 5 I remember starting to hear relatives comments about my weight and they never seemed to stop. I have been what I consider 'skinny' for 3 times in my life. In 8th grade, In 12th grade and then again at age 25. Each time seems to last a little under 6 months. The weight always comes back with a vengeance. Im now at age 29, my big 3-0 is right around the corner and I do not want to enter my 30s with the same problem. I really want to be able to be 'free' of diets, even though I know this upcoming diet will be the queen of all diets but thats ok, because I think the LapBand will really help me. I know its not a quick fix and I believe in myself that I can follow the diet afterwards. I notice something I always wish is that I could have a do-over with my body. I started considering weight loss surgery approximately 6 months ago, at the urging of my endocrinologist and even an urgent care doctor, who took the time to talk to me about my weight and seeming like he genuinely cared about me. One thing I will say is that I have been blessed with awesome doctors so far, and they have often moved me to tears. So I considered gastric bypass, the sleeve and the lapband. All 3 have about the equal amount of terror for me. I had my seminar Thursday and I was hoping that it would ease my fears and it did a little but not as much as I had hoped. I think what Im most afraid of is that I am going to get a bad band. I seem to have bad luck in every area of my life, and thats ok, but this bad luck will be in my body and wont be so easy to fix. If I could get a good band, I think I will be ok. Soooo...tomorrow is my consult. Im so nervous. I know I will probably have to lose 10% of my body weight but how on earth will I do this? Its going to take forever. Also, how long does the pre-auth take, how many times do I have see a counselor, do they recommend a counselor for you? How long does the process take, from the consult to the day of surgery? So here I go...wish me luck :)

Hello, 10 days post revision to gastric bypass. Long time constipation sufferer, tried many products. Miralax not working, neither is milk of magnesia, which almost always helps. Did a Fleet early this morning. Severe pain, feels like I'm sitting on a rock....it is right there....waiting to come out, just too hard and big. Sorry everyone. Refuse to do mag citrate, too harsh for tummy this early out. Considering trying Dulcolax, anyone know the size of the suckers? (Gel tabs to swallow). Can't take big pills, need to be hole-punch size or smaller. Thank you.
-
@mylighthouse how's the water intake? Water intake is critical to preventing constipation. I was prescribed Colace (generic Dulcolax) post revision to bypass, it's a small pill, smaller than an M&M. I'd work on LOTS of water uptake at this point, just to be safe! And clearly communicate with your surgical team.

It's the first couple off days when you go through cold turkey but keep focused on your goal and think just a small part off your life but I know how hard it was done it when I had my band fitted still hate milk now but got to go through it again for my bypass -
Hello all! I am having lapband surgery tomorrow morning and am scared, worried and unsure :rolleyes2:. I am terrified of surgery (scared I wont wake up & when I do how much pain there will be). I am worried that I wont lose the weight and be a failure statistic, and unsure that I am making the best decision for my weight loss. I have thought about weight loss surgery for the past 10 years, since my mom got gastric bypass. I have always been the "skinny one" in my family at 5'2" and 214. My mom, sister, aunt & cousin have all had gastric and have had success and are happy with their decision to have surgery. I know I WANT this but scared about all of the "what if's". I am private pay and worry too about additional need for surgery to correct problems. I guess I am just looking to connect with lapbanders, perhaps even in PA where I am from, to help me through the jitters. My Doc's office has a lapband support group but because of my work & school schedule I have been unable to attend. Thanks to everyone for your posts! They truely have been an excellent way for me to stay informed and feel positive.

VSG to RNY - Not excited
I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡ replied to stpatty's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I have a theory that since VSG is having so many issues with revision due to GERD, that Mexico is now picking up MGB as a new surgery option. But what the hell do I know? 🤣 Hopefully the future successes with MGB in Mexico will catch on here in the US. -
I am little over 100 lbs. over weight with a BMI of 43-44. My insurance covers lap band and gastric bypass, but I don't know which to choose. I want to get pregnant in the future. I don't know if I will get discouraged not loosing weight as fst as you would if I had gastric bypass? Please help me decide. any advise would of great help.:whoo:

Questions about bypass in Mexico?
Berry78 replied to whitneyisfab's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I am also deciding between sleeve and bypass. (Don't want a mini since they aren't common in the US). I'm pretty set on the sleeve because it can be converted later if necessary. The bypass is one and done, but what if it is more than I need? The sleeve has a pretty good weight loss to complication ratio, and I am willing to entertain the notion of a revision later. The RYN bypass is definitely "one and done". I wouldn't entertain a revision later from that. Good luck! -
Lapband To Sleeve- Have Some Questions :)
Threetimesacharm replied to BrokeMyHalo's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am going for my revision on Monday. A couple of answers for you: they use a special sizing instrument so no, they can't not take enough, 85% of your stomach is being removed. No need to remove more later. I am going to Mexico and paying $5500.00 for revision, and endoscopy. What is a net around the stomach never heard of this........................... Hopefully you won't want bread and butter...............you won't be able to eat copious amounts of food ever again. Kind of like with the band, my eating since having it has never been as much as it was, just not able to. They also say that your food preferences change hopefully you won't want bread and butter. -
Lapband To Sleeve- Have Some Questions :)
BrokeMyHalo posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have had my lapband since 2005. My starting weight was 230, my lowest weight was 174 (lasted about a month) and now I am at 265! My band is unfilled because I never felt full. I just felt pain when I ate (unless it was soft foods or liquids)...this was no way to live. I had a unfill and found out my port is tilted (most painful adjustment ever!!). I really want to lose weight and live a fuller life! I have been researching the sleeve and am hoping it will work for me! Any help with these questions is MUCH appreciated! -I read a lot of people saying sleeve doesnt work after having a lapband :/ is this true? I am SO scared of making a wrong choice -Is it possible to have a band and sleeve? -Why do more surgeons not offer the "net" around the stomach to help prevent stretching? -Weight loss aside; are you able to drink a small amount of alcohol (like a glass or two of wine)? -Do you feel like you get enough energy from what you eat? -Do you find yourself craving carbs or did the sleeve help kill that “I gotta have some bread and butter!!!”. Because even when I stuff myself with other foods, I still have that mental “but you didn’t have what you really wanted” feeling. -Since this is removing some of the stomach, do you feel like some surgeons are better than others? Like it’s an art? I am curious why some people fail and some succeed. Could it be the surgeons don’t remove enough stomach or do it wrong? I also ask this because I would consider going out of state (not out of country for a surgeon more experienced with lapband to sleeve. -Do you believe WLS is like breast implants, where you should prepare yourself that you may need to have “maintenance” done on it? Whether that be revision or additional surgery to correct complications? I explained to my boyfriend I always knew it was a possibility that I may need my band fixed or removed because I saw many patients with slips and port issues. -Can someone have the sleeve done 2x if they gain weight back? -My lapband surgeon is charging 22k for band removal to sleeve. Expensive! I already paid 19k out of pocket for my lapband, and it didn't work out. And I REALLY did try. This would be a 41k investment-- sigh. Many of my question stem from my fail with my lapband. Thank you for everyones replies... I have read this site over for days and finally wanted to post! -
