I do like the premade shakes…but not the Gatorade protein water. Disgusting doesnt even cover it. -
March 23 buddies yet?
Christi Hawkins replied to ceri84's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Day 6 Post-Op for me!! I had my sleeve surgery on March 7th. I agree with most of what has been said so far but I had quite a lot of pain for the first 3 days. They ran some tests, which showed nothing, so I imagined it or have turned into a big baby! I thought days 1-3 were brutal but in hindsight, I probably should have done a few things better. 1. Do exactly what your nurses tell you to do as soon as they tell you to do it. No matter how you feel. If they don't get you up and walking, you ask. My first nurse had me up on the first day and we walked twice. The next day was his day off so no one offered after that. As I was laying in bed miserable every time I looked up there was a young lady with pink hair and a big smile on her face making lap after lap. So I got approval to do it on my own 2. Start drinking the moment they tell you. It will look gross but it will make you feel so much better and SIP DO NOT GULP!! I could only get down water and didn't really even try to until the 3rd day 3. Have a game plan for recovery. I'm not sure why this happened but I woke up feeling very strange about what I'd done. Several moments of Buyer's Remorse and I remember just feeling sick about it. Almost like I hadn't expected it or the surgery happened by surprise. I can't really describe it but it was very strange and I didn't snap out of it for at least 2 days. So pull in your support group as quickly as you need. So now it's Day 6 and I almost feel back to normal. Pain is gone, I'm having no trouble getting all my protein and liquids in. I'm a little more tired than normal but that's it, really. I think the rest is going to be mental, so I'm trying to get my expectations in a realistic position. Please don't doubt your decision, or feel alone. We're all in this together and we can lean on each other when we need -
One week post-op/ Staple removal
SemperVeritas posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi all, tomorrow I will be one week out from my bypass. My recovery has been a bit bumpy, I spent about 24 hours over the weekend puking (I don't know where it all came from!) and in pretty severe gas type pain. That calmed down, and know I'm just trying to increase clear fluids, and not worry about protein. It was scary and painful and I don't want to overdo it again! It's kinda weird thinking I've had virtual no calories for a week, but since I'm able to use the bathroom and everything seems normal there, I'm just going to press on and hope for more each day. Anyhow, my surgeon closes incisions with staples, and I'm scheduled to have them removed this week. While I'm looking forward to having them out because I think they are gross, I'm honestly super nervous! I've never had staples out. Could anyone share their experience or insight on what to expect? -
It really depends on how you heal as a person, I would imagine. I led a group of teenagers around Europe 4 weeks after surgery. My surgeon said that was the minimum amount of time he wanted me to wait before leaving the country (I think it was more in case I had medical issues in healing or with my gall bladder). Everything went fine. I packed protein powder, made sure I ordered only approved soft foods at restaurants, and drank water all day. Stopping in grocery stores along the way to pick up yogurt or cheese or premade protein shakes was also helpful. (I was super tired of that protein powder flavor by the end of the trip, though.) Good luck! Sent from my Pixel 4a using BariatricPal mobile app

Today is day 5 post-Op for me and yesterday/Day 4 post felt like a physical turning point in terms of being more mobile. I did some short slow walking laps at a park across the street from me though I think the chafing against my shirt material may have irritated my center incision on my stomach where it looks like there is a keloid scar now so I am being more careful going forward. I went into the kitchen today to keep my body moving (my arm muscles feel weak when washing my hair for example) and I made the Kaiser recommended recipe for Butternut Squash soup. Eating that now for lunch. Yesterday I got less than 400 cals but did get 60 G protein in and I felt discomfort at night (hunger? My stomach makes noise all day long so it’s hard to tell what each new sound means). So today I am aiming for 600 cals/75 G protein instead. The soup tastes actually decent, even after adding in Isopure zero carb powder in it. I’m keeping up with my skincare, grateful for veggies being added to the mix and using this time to listen to audiobooks and color on my iPad while I eat. Days 1-3 were horrific for me - I couldn’t eat because everything tasted super off and I was fading. So for all those feeling a little down after surgery I think with each day there’s a new experience and the body does heal and recover physically, emotionally, mentally. 🤩

I've been sampling proteins in preparation for surgery. I found that I like Fairlife chocolate (premade) the best. I'm waiting for the clear proteins to get here to try. I have also seen protein shots on Amazon. Not sure about flavor, but they may be easier to get down in a few, approved, gulps. I feel ya. Protein drinks are not great. I haven't tried flavorless protein powder to add to foods-maybe that's an option for you. -

Sleeve_Me_Alone replied to SamDS100's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Have you tried premade shakes like Premier Protein or Fairlife? Those are often a little more tolerable. You could also try protein waters, like Protien2o, which are clear and more like a Gatorade than a shake. Lots of folks cut the shakes with water, milk, or even coffee in the beginning, which can help, too. It is very important to hit your protein early and often, but keep in mind it will be VERY hard in the beginning; you work up to it. And in time, most folks no longer need to supplement with shakes or bars (although some choose to). But you will likely get to a point where you get all of your protein form your meals. -

hello! so i'm 2 weeks post gastric bypass at the moment and I've discovered that I cannot stand protein powders (tried multiple) so I'm panicking now because protein is going to be such a huge part of my life basically forever and I'm stuck on what to do, when I can start eating normally I love chicken so I can eat protein no problem but im 100% sure I'm not going to be getting enough and everyone uses protein shakes or drinks/yogurts and I just can't stand them I've been looking at protein supplements and you barely get 1 gram of protein per tablet so that's not viable like I was hoping unless I take 40 a day. I should of thought about the protein shake problem more but I was just concerned with 'get the surgery and get healthy' and now I'm left wondering what I'm supposed to do any advice would be greatly appreciated, im feeling like a grade A idiot at the moment sam -
Hi All , thanks so much that valuable info .I dread trying to get an appointment with my G/P - as anyone in the UK will tell you - it's a miracle if you don't just get the nurse or pharmacist . The dietitian told me that gentle Iron , Feraglobin , and Bariatric Vits won't do it for me and I need to get a treatment plan off my G/P .Yeah like that's easy . She is sending me to be re-tested in a month .I have found it nigh on impossible to stomach ANY food that isn't soft ie I live on cottage cheese , shakes , Oatabix ( when it's soft ) and yogurt plus Protein water .I have really tried to digest proper food but it kills me going down .I can manage chocolate and am tempted to have some very dark chocolate every day to get my iron up .It doesn't give me the runs . Memoryissues - you are so right .The dietitian will only do so much .I wish I could have an infusion but I'm likely just to be put on Ferrous Fumerate which hasn't worked so far . Thanks for all the tips everyone re caffeine , spacing out my iron pills, the Vit C etc .I can't have V8 juice unfortunately as I have a stoma ( have a colostomy ) and veg juice would play merry hell with it .My stoma must be male 'cos it's very loud , embarasses me in front of people ,and never shuts up 😒😆

Since about 5 days after surgery I have been mixing my protein with my iced coffee every morning. I use powdered protein, had too many gross bottle of premier with chucks... But it is my everyday start now.

Trust me I understand. I was crying last night as well. Today, I can barely walk. Just going to try these different options and hopefully find a good remedy that works for me. Sent from my LM-Q730 using BariatricPal mobile app

Protein coffee was a staple in my diet as well for a while. Got sick of the someday though.

I started following a VSG/WLS influencer on Instagram and decided to try her recipe for protein coffee. My life is forever changed. 16 oz - Cold Brew Decaf 1 x 11.5 oz bottle of Premier Protein Caramel Protein Shake 2 Splashes of Jordan's Skinny Syrup - Salted Caramel This helps me to not miss my lattes and frappes! If you're like me and live under a rock and haven't made a protein coffee (and you like coffee) - you need this in your life!

Vitamins for stopping hair loss. Yes or no?
qtdoll replied to happynewbie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was taking 100% of the vitamins I needed to take, taking Finasteride, getting my full protein intake & I still dealt with hair loss around the 3rd month. It's nearly unavoidable. -
I used to often make chia seed pudding like @Tomo regularly but haven’t for a while now. Funny how you get out of the habit of making/eating something. I’d just use vanilla as a flavour & would add a spoonful of milk powder to the mix for extra protein too ( it can make it extra sweet though). I have a spoon of mixed seeds cooked in with my porridge every morning.
-
I'm on day 13 of the liquid diet pre-op & I just read on my surgery papers that says not to take flaxseed 5 days prior to surgery plus some other stuff and I've been adding flaxseed to most of the protein shakes I've been making lately (maybe 3-4 days now) and my gastric sleeve surgery is Tuesday... Should I be worried??! 😬

Vitamins for stopping hair loss. Yes or no?
catwoman7 replied to happynewbie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
as the others have said, there's really nothing you can do to help with the hair loss other than keep on top of your protein and supplements so it won't be any worse than it already is. Hair loss is due to the surgery's trauma to your body (It can be a side effect of any major surgery - (or childbirth, too)) plus the super low calorie intake we have the first few weeks post-op. By the time it starts falling out, the "damage" has already been done. It'll stop after about three months and will grow back. Fortunately, I lost very little hair, so it wasn't noticeable. But some who lose more go for a shorter cut or wear scarves or something to take the focus off hair. A few people have heavy enough loss that they buy a wig - although that much loss doesn't seem to be that common. -
Vitamins for stopping hair loss. Yes or no?
Arabesque replied to happynewbie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The hair loss tends to last about 3 months +/- for those who take theses additional vitamins & supplements & about 3 months +/- for those who don’t take them. As to whether you’ll lose less or more hair by taking them or not taking them no one really knows as you can’t compare your experience with someone else. Most supplements to promote hair growth or prevent loss contain the vitamin B family, vitamins D & E, zinc & iron which are usually found in your multivitamins anyway. I say save your money but it is your choice. Take your multi vitamins, meet your protein goals & your hair will stop shedding in its time. -

Iron Deficiency 4 years after surgery
Recidivist replied to Recidivist's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Thanks for the very helpful comments. My doctor didn't mention ferritin but I will ask him about it. I'm also going to see whether an infusion would be an option. (Medicare for all in Australia, and it can be difficult to get approved for some treatments like that.). Meanwhile, he is running tests for possible explanations for my anemia, other than malabsorption due to gastric bypass. -
March 23 buddies yet?
GeorgieLynn replied to ceri84's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am on day 2 post op as well however I am still in the hospital. My bladder has decided to become quite lazy after the anesthesia and is refusing to begin work again quite yet so am having to be straight cathed every few hours u til it begins to respond to its own signals to empty when I am ready. Other than that, water and my shakes (Orgain plant protein) is going down fairly easy without too much difficulty in 2oz medicine cups every 15 minutes that I am awake. I do still have considerable bloating due to the CO² in my abdomen/torso and have not been able to pass any but my body is absorbing it slowly. I am walking the unit almost every hour while awake however at times I really do feel exhausted but I still feel it is worth it not to lie in the hospital bed. I still have a very sore throat and am very hoarse from the tubes down my throat during surgery but I have been gargling with warm salt water which feels good and should speed up the healing of this area. Regardingvpain after VGS, (laparoscopy) I can say that I am uncomfortable but not in pain. It is tolerable knowing day to day is is going to ease and all be worth all of the struggles when I reach my goal. It will only be a memory. I am thinking of all of the others who have had surgery this week and those who have their's coming up rapidly and offer encouragement to not be anxious. It is not horrible, nothing to fear. Just ve diligent about working your program and following all of the recommendations put to you from your surgeon and / or your WL clinic to stay disciplined wirh your diet, walk, walk, walk, and use your support systems. Do not be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Allow your body to heal. Bless you all. 🙏 20230311_002443.heic -
It’s Day 2 Post-Op for me - my surgery was on March 8th (robot assisted sleeve gastrectomy - Da Vinci machine). I’m doing okay on getting the liquid amount recommended to me but unfortunately it’s either water or vitamin water. The Premier Clear Peach flavor tastes salty to me so not doing well on the protein count but trying not to panic. I also tried broth yesterday and it tasted SOUR and I had it confirmed that it was not sour by my fiancé. The amount of gas in my tummy is going down slowly making it easier to drink liquids without a sharp pain. Wishing all the March surgeries a speedy recovery!!! To better lifelong health.

Your welcome! I tried apple sauce, I found out I don't like apple sauce with cinnamon anymore. I have to be on this phase for 4 weeks! I need ideas because I'll get burnt out haha. I can't stomach protein shakes anymore lol.
-
Honestly at the pureed phase I literally just pureed whatever my family was eating with some extra gravy or sauce! Honestly the most delicious meal I had - possibly ever - was the pureed roast lamb dinner with veg that I ate a few weeks after surgery. I still remember that flavour explosion after 2 weeks of liquids. Never had another protein shake EVER after that. Proper food FTW! Best of luck!

Hello, Just started my liquid diet! How MUCH WEIGHT DID YOU GUYS lose ON IT? I was able to have a bunch of premier protein shakes and Jell-O, and some broth. I seasoned the hell out of that broth! I am so hungry.haha
