Battling with dizziness/lightheaded episodes
catwoman7 replied to newsam1154's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
it's good to have it checked out, although this far out from surgery, the usual culprit is low blood sugar. I started having issues with that at about two years out. I went in for a workup and they tested everything - glucose, blood pressure, ears (it can also be due to an imbalance in your inner ear), even urine (not sure what that test would have been looking for with that, but whatever..). Everything came back normal, but I noticed it again about two weeks later. It was a couple of hours after I'd eaten a piece of cake at a retirement party. I usually just eat a couple of forkfuls, but that time I'd eaten the whole piece. So i let my PCP know. She said the problem was probably low blood sugar, then - it's just that my glucose level happened to be normal when I had the workup. She suggested I just eat something about every three hours - either a protein or, if a carb, then pair it with a protein. Seems to have resolved the issue for me. -
It's no different. I will, however, always dispute the well-worn myth that it's hard to get your protein in. I've never had an issue. Once you know what foods are your higher protein options (and there are many), it's no more difficult than lacto-ovo diets. There's so much available these days!

So sorry you are experiencing this. I think you need to find another bariatric surgeon & discuss your options. A revision to bypass will help you lose more weight (maybe not a lot but some) so yiu can look into knee replacement surgery in the future & it certainly will help with your gerd. You can not survive on shakes & protein bars. Besides not getting the nutrients your body needs to function effectively, the low calorie diet will be slowing your metabolism down more. You did lose 100lbs. That’s almost a third of yourself. That’s something to celebrate. Remember the average weight loss is about 65% of the weight you have to lose to put you in a healthier weight range. So, not knowing your height or what would be your healthier weight, I’d expect you may have been pretty close to that statistic. So your stall, which are very common & can occur many times, may have been you reaching your new weight set point & stabilising. I find it ironic that your surgeon complained your sleeve was too big. I mean they did the surgery so if the sleeve is too big that’s on them not you.

That’s probably a conversation with your surgeon. And it depends upon what hormones you are talking about. There are many hormones produced through out your body that have roles to play that are not related to your weight directly or indirectly. For most of us it is our weight that causes our hormones to be unbalanced, unless there is a medical condition like diabetes, over/under active thyroid, etc, so losing weight will help to balance out your hormones. Most hormone diets will advise you to lose weight by adopting a low processed whole foods diet, high in protein & be more active. This is what yiur post surgical plan will look like anyway. They often say manage stress & sleep more - both will be helped by losing weight. The surgery will reduce the amount of the hunger hormone ghrelin that is produced (it’s removed with your tummy) but your brain does eventually compensate by stimulating other areas of the body that produces hunger hormones (motilin in your intestines) & your hunger does return. The surgery will also give your metabolism a boost (but you have to keep it burning otherwise you’ll lose some of it’s effectiveness). Dietary changes will also help to better regulate your hunger & satiety hormones. There is evidence to show a diet of high processed food will increase the production of your hunger hormone & reduce production of the hormone that tells you you’ve had enough. Estrogen is stored in fat so as you lose weight you’ll first get a oestrogen surge & you may notice changes with your menstrual cycle & it can make you more fertile. It’s temporary. Your cycle stabilises once you get close to your goal as your weight stabilises. Though you may notice you don’t have as many issues or symptoms with your cycle. And may help stabilise your weight a little too. Losing weight will also help reduce any diabetes issues you may have & better regulate your body uses insulin.

Hey everyone, So I've finally come to terms that I may need help. I've tried to lose weight since I was a teen and I'm now 29 with no success. I've hit my highest weight of 250lbs at 5"3 and it's extremely depressing. I know I'd technically qualify based on bmi but every clinic I've called has said I need a referral even though I have a PPO through Covered California. Does anyone have any experience with covered california blue shield of California? I am meeting with my doctor tomorrow and in the off chance that she doesn't want to provide a referral, I want to know my options. Thanks in advance

neither harder or easier. It's just that it may be more challenging to get all your protein requirements in.

Pain When Eating - NOT Stomach Pain
fed-up replied to BrandiBird's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi Brandi , I am 6 months post op and I am still having the same problem .I am still only able to eat runny food .If I eat tuna, mackeral , turkey breast -even soft salmon , it feels like barbed wire going down .I pretty much eat cottage cheese , protein shakes , yogurts , soft berries , soft cereal and crackers .I don't have the solution .I saw a woman on tv eating chunks of apple !! how she managed it I have no idea .Hopefully someone who has managed to eat more normally will come on and share with us how they manage to do it !! Don't worry too much , you are still very very new and all could be well for you soon I hope . -
I've tried apps in the past, but figuring out the calories, carbs & protein and all for things I made at home I found very frustrating. During my pre-op clearance process (surgery is scheduled for 3 weeks away) I was placed in a weekly group session with psych. One of the things we discussed was keeping a food diary. We were told in the class that food diaries are the #1 best predictor of weight loss. What helped me was when I was advised not to focus on the macros, or calorie counts but to focus on what I ate, when I ate it and how I felt. I whipped up a spreadsheet on Google Sheets and just go to it on my phone and list it down, it was frustrating at first but I found it has really helped me these last two months that I have been doing it. I'm hopeful that it has helped me be on the right footing in my post-op "new life." I hope that helps.

I was sleeved 08/2017. It's been a constant struggle. I was told by the surgeon that I wasn't progressing as well compared to others. That my sleeve is bigger than he wanted & my metabolism is slow & I needed to work harder. I do have severe GERD but I have learned to work around that. I found out I have tachycardia. Also then & even worse now mobility issues. I couldn't vigorously exercise due to having grade 4 Osteoarthritis in my left knee. I stuck to the program & went from 323 to 223. I stalled & went into a deep depression. I wasn't losing unless I ate 800 calories or less. I gained all of my weight back due to decreased mobility & depression. I fell off the wagon per say. I now need a hip & knee replacement plus my right knee is almost just as bad as my left. I'm in chronic pain. For me to have surgery I need to lose weight. Nobody would do the surgery a few years ago when I was thinner stating I'm too young blah, blah. My quality of life has dwindled the last 2 years and I gained it all back plus 20lbs. For the last 8 weeks I have been using my fitness Pal to login my food diary. I'm eating every 3-4 hrs mini meals. Substituting 2-3 meals with protein shakes/bars to obtain my protein goal. I would lose weight 1 week than the next gain back & forth. I don't understand. In 8 weeks I've lost 12lbs. I went from 343 to 328 to yo-yo 331. I have experimented & it doesn't seem to matter if I eat 800 calories or 1000 or under 1200. I gain/lose weight. I always eat no more than 1200 and no less than 800. Does anyone have any tips. At this point I am beyond frustrated. Sent from my LM-G710 using BariatricPal mobile app

Hi there! I had my VSG + hiatal hernia repair surgery on March 7th, 2023. I am 13 days post-op today, and at my one week-check up, I was approved to eat soft foods, take medication whole, and start gentle resistance exercises. I am having moments of pain when eating certain foods. It hasn't been often. The first time was when I tried soft scrambled eggs, and I've since paused eating eggs because they just don't feel good going down. I've since eaten various types of soft foods - refried beans, pudding, soups, and tuna fish. The latter is one that I really enjoy and it goes down well. It's also how I try to get a lot of my protein in for the day. Today, though, I was eating some tuna and a little mayo, and it hurt. It felt like someone was poking me in upper center of my chest and it went through to my back. It's the first time I've had the sensation of feeling like food was "stuck" and that it might come back up. Luckily it didn't, but it was super painful for about five minutes of deep breathing. I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this, and what might help? I can accept some foods not going down well for now, but I haven't had a problem with tuna until now! Any advice?

Fairlife were really the only ones I liked. Most of the others made me nauseous. I didn't use powders to drink, I used premade shakes. I used powders to add to things like soup and I mainly used the Isopure unflavored. Whey protein isolate is what you want, not whey protein concentrate.
-
Jeaniebug, what brand of protein powder/shakes did you use?
-
Because I was so scared of not meeting my protein goals, I just drank 3 shakes a day. Anything else was just extra, but I was relying on the shakes throughout my entire liquid and puree stages.

Sleeve surgery March 13th 2023
PRRNThickChick replied to aph0313's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@amandarara 3/13/23 surgery here too. You’re allowed to eat cottage cheese and chicken?! Does that hurt at all? I’m struggling so bad with my protein. I liked them before surgery when I could break it up with Food. But now I get nauseated from the first sip because they are too sweet. Cottage would really help a lot if I could have it. But I’m told to wait 3 weeks 🤷🏽♀️ -
Hi 👋🏼 did anyone use the Robard high protein low carb products for their pre-op diet? I need to pay $200 for my two week pre op diet and just wondering if these products help or I should just do it on my own 🤷🏻♀️ Thanks!

Hi Jay. So glad you aren't experiencing any issues. I'm slowly learning my body. Protein shakes are a no go for me however I am able to to have protein in yogurt, cream of wheat, water,. Also learning my "hunger pains" are often me being thirsty. Keep us posted on your progress -
I am 6 weeks post op and on soft foods. I have already found out that beef and couscous make me vomit. My problem is protein shakes. I have tried many and many flavors but keep gagging when sipping it. I wish I could just gulp it down. I now add unflavored whey to my soup and Wendy’s chili. Tonight is my first time going out to a Hibachi restaurant. I will order a side order of hibachi chicken. The veggies are too hard to eat. Would hibachi noodles be ok?

5 Pounds lost in 6 weeks?
RaiderRhode replied to RaiderRhode's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm getting my multi and calcium as my team prescribed. I keep a journal on baritastic and I have a follow up with my surgeon next week. I do think I've lost .. girth? I've had to tighten my pants up (been wearing jeans with a drawstring since surgery). It's just been hard seeing everyone lose so much more in the same time, ya know? I've been following the surgeon and dieticians plan, they say at this point that's how much I should be getting and taking 30 minutes to eat it. Admittedly I don't always finish the whole meal, so my pups have been very happy about it. I think I'll try to get more protein though, maybe switch to just powdered in the coffee instead of pre-made shakes. -
ESG Surgery 03/14/23!
kmacintosh replied to Notingreenbay's topic in Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty Forum
@L. Knight You know what, I hadn’t thought of that, only because I’m afraid of losing more of the pill “dust” since some of it is already lost in the crusher. But you make a valid point! Today has been a better day- still going good on the fluid intake- had a protein soup (16g) was horrid tasting but manageable. Not much of a celebratory birthday dinner but you manage!? Lol -
5 Pounds lost in 6 weeks?
Jonathan Carlson replied to RaiderRhode's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree that you could be building muscle. Measurements might help allay your concerns. I had my bypass 2 days after you. I don't mean this as a criticism at all, but I am wondering how you can eat 4-5 oz of chicken? The most I can get down is 2 boiled eggs, or half a can of chili (200g). In terms of your protein it's a good thing, especially since you are working out so much. Calories probably don't matter too much either, even though i think that's more than a standard serving size. When's your next visit with the nutritionist? I'm curious what they might say? Hang in there! -
5 Pounds lost in 6 weeks?
mcipanda replied to RaiderRhode's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Im sorry the Facebook group was so harsh. Maybe everyone is having a rough week or something. I’d brush them off I’ve learned the body needs a base level of protein to function and more if you want to build muscle while working out. Based on what you’ve said, it’s possible you need more protein to support your workouts. You didn’t mention vitamins or supplements. Are you getting all of those in as well? The sleuth in me would keep a daily journal (for at least a week) of everything you’re eating and an honest assessment of calories and such. I’d also start taking body measurements with a cloth tape because you could be trimming up even though the scale isn’t moving much. Finally, make sure you have a dietician or time to review your food journal with your doctor so you can work together to understand what combination of macros would be best for your new lifestyle. Im always a little bothered when people try to sum things up in black or white (”it was the bbq sauce”, “you’re eating too much” or “you’re working out too much”). Our bodies are just too complex for that kind of minimization. Anyways, I’m sure others can weigh in here too. There’s so much experience on these forums -
I had bypass on 2/13, I've always followed the plan very closely. I managed to lose 70 pounds pre-op on the dieticians plans and working out and then 20 pounds on the liquid diet. Since surgery I've only lost 5 pounds. I thought I was doing very well but I guess not? I stick close to the diet plan, though I admit my calories can go over but my main goal has always been to get to my protein goal before anything else. I've been working out 4-5 times a week for a minimum of 30 minutes. I do a lot of strength training because I am into strongwoman stuff, so its been weird staying in the weight restriction. I also hit my water goals alongside my protein goals. I made the mistake of posting this on a facebook support group and.. wow. I don't think I've ever felt worse about myself, there was almost no support and a lot of telling me I'm doing something wrong obviously. A lot of people there were blaming the scant amount of bbq sauce I use or the single string cheese. Most were telling me I'm eating far too much. Others were telling me to stop working out entirely? I don't want to be skinny, I want to be healthy and I want to be strong. Am I eating too much still? When I don't work out I get 600 calories, and when I do its usually more around 800 to be honest. I don't feel like I'm making the wrong decisions. Meal 1: Oikos Triple Zero yogurt to take my meds with. Meal 2: Fairlife elite core protein in my coffee. Meal 3: 3 oz turkey lunch meat 1 oz of cheeze and mustard. Meal 4: 1 String cheese. Meal 5: 4-5 oz of chicken with bbq sauce (its not sugar free, I live in the country and the rural grocery store doesnt stock sugar free and the next closest is over 50 miles away). I'm so confused and heartbroken.

I've been having the same problem with soft foods. Whenever my stomach is feeling off or upset I just go back to purees or have a shake instead. My favorite so far is to just get a can of chunky soup and puree it with some unflavored protein powder. Its super good (Jambalaya has been THE BEST).

The first couple of days were really difficult, but today I liquified cream of wheat (recommended by my surgeon) and it was a game changer! It’s nice to use that for breakfast and have cream soups for lunch and dinner. I’m currently struggling with drinking so many protein shakes throughout the day because I’m not hungry.

Post op calories per day?
ChubRub replied to mcipanda's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just chiming in to say that I also was never given a calorie goal in the beginning. I was loosely given a protein goal, but even that the nurse said no to worry about it in the beginning as you are taking in such small amounts, it's hard to get it all in. More importantly, congratulations on your surgery and welcome to the other side!!! You are probably still full of IV fluids, so once you start peeing your brains out, you will be shedding weight like never before!!! Best of luck to you!!!
