    Sleeve or Bypass? Confused

i had the gastric bypass because of its severity and restrictions. i know two co workers that had the sleeve, regained weight back and have bad GERD. The sleeve seems too easy because of stretching and talking to my co workers. My gastric bypass was done Nov 1, 2021, down 76lbs to date. Sent from my SM-G973U using BariatricPal mobile app

    really struggling

One of the problems people face after surgery, especially early on, is the feeling that you have to deny yourself certain things that you've always enjoyed, when that isn't entirely true. If there was a favorite food you had, you can still have it - just a much smaller portion. Or look for an alternative like the previous poster described. I've loved pizza my whole life. My wife and I would order a large pie and I'd eat half of it. I haven't tried pizza since my revision surgery, but after I was sleeved after a few months I would occasionally have ONE slice of pizza which would fill me up and make me feel like I wasn't depriving myself. Sometimes I'd make cauliflower crust pizza which was pretty good once I got the hang of it. They now sell premade cauliflower crust pizza which can be very tasty if you get the right brand. One of my absolute favorite meals that I made after my sleeve was the Eggface Ricotta Bake, it's super easy to prepare and tastes like lasagna. https://recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-detail.asp?recipe=1793517 In fact I think I inspired myself, I'm going to make it this weekend!

all weight loss surgerys are "bariatric surgery" I meant more specific... If you notice 0n my sidebar it says Gastric sleeve. That is the surgery i am getting. Then there is Gastric Bypass, Mini bypass, Lap band and a few other minor ones. your info can be edited in your profile section under surgery.

    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hey! I have bypass on April 26th as well! Wanna be surgery buddies?
  5. I too was leaning towards the sleeve but my endoscopy showed that the Bypass would be a far better option. Fingers and toes crossed for you, I would cross my legs but I cant LOL

    Atlanta,ga?

Dr. Hart performed my sleeve in 2017. Yes, he’s quiet but if you go in with a list of questions, he will respond. I live in Cleveland, Ohio now. Im having a revision at the Cleveland Clinic to bypass on April 26th. I lost 65 pounds with sleeve. Never regained but stopped losing. Also developed GERD. So bypass is the next step. Good luck with your journey. I miss ATL!!!

    This is all overwhelming

Coop, this is a safe space! We're all in the same boat as you or were where you are now. Sure it's easier for some than others, but you can do this. We're here for you! We will help you as much as we can. That's what this community is all about, supporting each other. Sure eating after weight loss surgery is an adjustment, but you adjust. A lot of people say that your taste changes after surgery and you don't even enjoy the foods that you used to. As the weight starts coming off, and your clothes fit better, you realize that you've broke free from the grip that food had on you. I actually miss the restriction that my Lap Band gave me. I'm currently waiting for revision surgery. I had a Lap Band for about 8 years and had it removed last year and now almost ready to get a surgery date for gastric bypass. Best wishes to you Coop! You got this! 💪

    Brand new here

Someone asked me in this post what surgery will i be getting and honestly i have no idea as i mentioned my PCP put in the consult a few days ago thats about all i know at this point , i have a virtual interview April 1st. My wife as a matter of fact had gastric bypass 17 years ago and she tries to help me with what i could possibly be up against but it has been so long she does not want to mislead me or give me wrong information , anyway i am pretty scared because even though i have had both my hips replaced about 10 years ago i was told this surgery is more invasive i honestly do not know who to believe , i just know that i am uncomfortable in my clothes and if they fit they are extremely tight ( by the way i am 284 lbs and i am 5'7 } i am so obsessed with losing weight that i take all the weight loss pills and they do not work , i go on the cleanse juices, they do not work, i can not work out because i have a bad back, i am at my wits end it is so frustrating being heavy i am so self conscious of my weight i try on my clothes all the time, i apologize for rambling i am so tired of living like this , can anyone relate , thank you for listening , it helps. Coop

    Sleeve or Bypass? Confused

I had GERD and a hiatal hernia pre op which is precisely why I choose the bypass over the sleeve (I did not want it to remain the same or get worse). My hiatal hernia was fixed during surgery and although I am only 2 weeks post op, I have had no GERD.
  11. in most cases, gastric bypass improves if not outright cures GERD. Mine went completely away for 2-3 years. I do have issues occasionally now, but it's really minor reflux rather than GERD. Nothing a couple of Tums can't deal with (as well as not eating things that might set it off). And it's just occasionally - not every day like it was before surgery (and certainly much milder). P.S. I had gastric bypass almost seven years ago. Not a revision. I chose bypass over sleeve because I had GERD.
  12. I'm in the process of revising from Band to Bypass due to GERD. Good Lord, I hope I don't get GERD again after the Bypass. That's supposed to cure it. My sister in law has LPR, but she's not a wls patient. Her father had it and it led to his esophageal cancer. So this sort of thing terrifies me.
  13. Hi All, Does anyone here have GERD and/or LPR (Silent Reflux) after gastric bypass surgery? If so, can you please advise: 1. How long ago you had the gastric bypass surgery (and if you had revision from sleeve to bypass)? 2. When your symptoms of GERD and/or LPR started? 3. If you have managed to treat it? I have LPR and am struggling. So other people's experiences would be appreciated. Thanks all.

Now thinking if canceling surgery 🥺

I also paid out of pocket. I then got GERD and an upper endoscopy showed that I had a hiatal hernia. I needed a second surgery. I could either get a Linx device put in, have a hiatal hernia surgery or have a bypass. since these surgeries were now medically necessary to fix an issue they were covered. I had the hiatal hernia surgery and paid about $400 total. Don't let the possibility of a side effect scare you!! Just because the first surgery is not covered does not mean the second won't be. I could have gotten any of the three surgeries covered and went with the one that worked best with my situation. Losing weight over the past 8+ months makes the issues I dealt with more than worth it. Edit: BTW, OTC medication helped alleviate all the acid reflux symptoms. Then, the reflux was gone immediately after the HH surgery.

If that happens maybe I'll be on social security and have Medicaid. Maybe it will pay for a revision surgery lol.
  16. My surgeon explained that a minority of people will have Gerd after surgery. He said that for the vast majority of those people, medicine alleviates it. He said there is a small percentage, I forget whether it was one or 3%, for whom the medicine does not work, and they need revision surgery.

Now thinking if canceling surgery 🥺

I am one year out and have not had heartburn once yet. So there are definitely people on both sides of it. That being said it is a possible complication that you have to be aware of. Their is no shame in postponing your surgery if you are not ready. But I’d talk to the doctor and see if bypass is an option. I went with sleeve because I am on medication that I was worried about the absorption issues however bypass is the tried and true surgery. I would have gone with it if I wasn’t worried about my meds.

Now thinking if canceling surgery 🥺

I was really worried about GERD, but there are medication absorption issues with bypass that made me a bad candidate for that. I am six months out and have had zero issues with GERD. Before surgery I would have GERD if I overate. of course, now it's hard to overeat, but even when I feel uncomfortably full, I still don't get GERD. You might decide to wait on surgery, but if you have other health conditions, you might be at risk. Just keep in mind that surgery may not fix co-morbidities, even if the surgeon says it will.

My BMI was 35 and the surgeon said he recommended sleeve for me and felt that bypass was overkill for me but said he would still do it if I was really adamant in getting it. Maybe if you explain your concerns your feelings would too.

I'm not big enough for bypass. I have health reasons to get the wls now. But my bmi is only 36

I was given the option of Sleeve vs Bypass but chose bypass because I didn't want the risk of revision if GERD and also wanted a surgery that had better statistics to back up given my history of PCOS. So have you considered of Bypass? I think out of pocket means it may little more expensive for you to get bypass but do give it a thought and do your research to ease your nerves. Also like others mentioned, you shouldn't get intimidated by certain some a experiences. If some have had not so great experience, there are also others out here who have found success and turned a new leaf in their lives. Every experience is different and not everyone is going to describe their detailed medical history here. So best option for you is to speak to your surgical team and see what they have to say about your dilemma.

Only you can decide if the risks are worth the payoff. It is especially acute when you are self pay, which I understand because I also was self pay. I'm also afraid of GERD, but the risk for me is worth the payoff. But, I have many weight related issues and knew the surgery was key for me making a major change. I needed to in order to literally save my life and make it past 60. I also wasn't comfortable with bypass, so I am taking a calculated risk. I know that GERD is a serious risk, but will deal with that if it comes. I'll be honest - if I were your BMI I am not sure what my choice would have been but this choice is so individual it is hard to give good advice. I would definitely have a frank and honest conversation with your surgical team regarding potential risks vs. payoff. If you still are nervous, then I wouldn't do it. Maybe give yourself time to process things, and reassess in a few months. This surgery really requires that you are mentally ready for it, so if you aren't, don't do it. Good luck!

Is there a reason you do not want to do bypass in lieu of sleeve? I started down the sleeve route and switched to bypass due to the whole GERD/hiatal hernia issue (I already suffered and did not want it to continue or get worse).
  25. After a forum from yesterday. The worry I had about getting GERD is a lot stronger. The thought of it happening to me scares me. When I do do acid reflux (which is not often ) it does make me sick. This is a out of pocket surgery for me. My insurance doesn't cover wls. So I can't afford this surgery and then have to pay to get bypass if I get GERD. My mood now is so different. I was so happy I made the decision to get the surgery. And after yesterday today I'm scared and sad. I need positive thoughts ❤️
