Parents with young kids out there?

I recommend sleeve or bypass not the band Sent from my HTC Desire 626s using the BariatricPal App -
I had gastric bypass surgery on May 19th. I'm sure you know just to get to the surgery is very long and stressful at times. One of the suggestions I would recommend is when you do start your pre op diet, make sure you stick to it. Otherwise you could be turned away on surgery day. I would recommend setting goals for yourself as well. When you are in the hospital you really really really need to walk after your surgery. It's the fastest way to heal. I'm 6 days out and I'm at the pool and going to a concert. I walk multiple times a day. You will recovery so much faster. I also wouldn't stock up on protein shakes because sometimes your taste buds change after surgery. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask. Good luck in your new life!

Got approval from PCP today!!!
k2k07 replied to DecemberRose's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My psychological exam was a very long fill-in-the-bubble type test. It basically wants to know whether or not you are suicidal and if you'd be a candidate that can adhere to the band and all that comes with it (diet etc). As far as your question of when? Each doctor is different. My doctor requires 5 nutrition classes before they even send anything in to insurance. I started this journey on June 25th (first appointment), and it looks like I'll be scheduled for October (hopefully) or November (the latest). Like I said, every doctor is different. -
Getting the Band in November 08
Jaculin412 replied to colettes's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Colettes, I'm right there with you, my surgery is scheduled for November 24th. I think I'm more nervous about the approval process. My info will not be submitted until early November once all my requirements are met. I hope there are no problems with the approval and it goes through quickly. Once I have the approval I think my nerves and excitement will heighten for other reasons. It's so exciting but so nerve wracking!!! :wink2: -
One thing to consider with a band and no insurance is after-care. With a band, you have to have fills or the band does you no good. Many surgeons offer fills for a period of time in their fees, but after that, you are on your own. Fills can cost a few hundred dollars per. My surgeon wants me to have an Upper GI each year. That would be another cost. Bands are not a set-it and forget-it procedure like bypass is. Should you have a complication down the road and need the band removed, such as erosion, it is another full surgery. If your band should slip, treatment starts conservatively, but can end up back in the operating room. If all goes well, banding is cheaper than bypass. I've seen amounts around 10K in the states for a band, I don't know what after is included in that price. Bypass would be substantially more as the procedure takes quite a bit more time to complete. There are many self-pay people here who are extremely happy with their choice. But be sure you can afford the aftercare. If you cannot have fills, then it isn't worth it. And empty band is like an empty gas tank...it just sits there going nowhere fast.

Hi all. My name is Linda and I am new to this site. I was banded on 05-16-07 and to date have lost 105 pounds. I was doing great until October, when i began to have serious stomach problems. My fill was removed in November adn i had finally decided to have it put back in and BAM the stomach problems are back. My problem only happens at night after i fall asleep. I wake up with a mouthful of bile or vomit. ( I know YUCK!). It seems to go on most of the night. I have tried harldy eating adn not eating at bedtime. Any one out there with suggestions, I would appreciate it.

Hi Mlevel. Does that mean Midlevel??? I agree with the last person. Do your reading, research the band and the gastric bypass. There's several sites which describe them all, and then you can narrow in on a procedure and check out individual sites too. One place with some helpful info is obesityhelp.com This might help you on your path to control! Best wishes! Cat

Sleeve or Bypass? Decisions, Decisions
Dubai Scouser posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Dear All, I am a newbie to this website. I have previously had lap band surgery in 2008 which resulted in extreme pain and discomfort from acid reflex. Eventually my band slipped due to the constant vomiting and was removed in March 2011. Since then I have not suffered at all with acid reflux however all my weight and more has returned. I am now considering further bariatric surgery and I went to see a specialist in Dubai on Monday. I was swaying towards Gastric Bypass as I am 33 years old with no medical issues at all and I wanted the 'Gold Service'. I don't take any medication but weigh in at 147.9kgs (very lucky my weight does not affect my health). My doctor wants me to have the Gastric Sleeve as it is less invasive, less complications down the way and I don't have any illnesses that need to be resolved. I, on the other hand am very worried about the acid reflux (that I experienced with the lap band) returning and eventually having RNY surgery. I want this to (hopefully) be my last bariatric surgery. What would you recommend??? -
I am having the sleeve done in Mexico in November 18th and I am getting nervous. I have a low BMI 30.4 and I know this surgery is usually done on heavier people but i have struggled for the past 6 years with my weight like a rollercoaster and I am tired of all the fad diets. I am hoping to hear some postive comments about this surgery and maybe even some comments from people like me who do not have a high BMI and have done this surgery. I am going with Dr. Ramos Kelly at INT and would like any info or comments. My sister and I will be recording our "adventure"and sharing our experience in Mexico and our journey to hopefully more healthy and beautiful bodies. Any posts would be appreciated : )

The serious conversation "oh snap"
WishMeSmaller replied to Betty1971's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had bypass, but the first two weeks my kcals/day ranged from 50-500. 500 per day at two weeks is great! Some of us WLS folks struggle with 300 kcals at week two. I have also seen a good number of folks on here that stay at 500 kcals until they reach goal. You are doing awesome! 💕 -
You look awesome! I was banded with plication in November. You rock!

:huh2:Hello everyone, I am just starting to look into Lapband surgery as an option for me. I happened to be blessed with heart disease (six bypasses at age 38), sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes. Weighing in at 270, 5’8”. I am currently taking a lot of insulin (160 units of nph and 50 regular each day) that I can not lose weight at all. I have done the diet and exercise bit. Spent a ton of money on a personal trainer and I am/was the most fit 270lb person I knew, but could not drop the weight or keep the diabetes under good control. So my exploration into LapBand surgery has begun. I would like very much to hear from others with my similar conditions who have had the band “installed”. How has it changed your meds, diabetes, apnea and cholesterol etc. I am searching and reading the site (that could take a year in itself). Any feedback from others would be appreciated. Thanks Archer

Hi Everyone- I am brand new to this forum (or any Lap Band forums for that matter) and wanted to say hello. I am 9 mos post op on the 3rd of July and haven't regretted a single part of the decision to have the Lap Band placed. It's not without its struggles, as you all know, but it's been so incredibly worth it so far. This really has been the tool that I needed to get my weight OFF!!! I am in Boston, MA (had my Band placed at MGH) and would love to see if there are more Banders out there in my neck of the woods. Most of the patients at the MGH Weight Center are Bypass patients and it's been great getting to know them as well! I'd also love any general thoughts or advice or tips that anyone has to share. Anyway, just wanted to say hello to everyone  I look forward to getting to know this Forum a little better. Best, BeantownDiva diva71575@gmail.com

Greetings from Maryland! It is never to early to start researching. I was banded in March and I have been coming here since November. You can learn a lot here. Read all you can. If you can, start going to the Lapband support group at the hospital you have chosen. I started doing that last summer. You will meet people at all stages of pre and post op, hear about their issues, and ask lots of questions. The better informed you are, the better decision you will make. I felt like I could almost do the surgery myself by the time I had mine! You can get lots of tips here, so ask away. Good luck on your journey.

Hi everyone! My name is churchmouse and I was just banded last Friday, the 21st of November 2008. I'm 53 years old and wish I had done this years ago. My highest recorded weight at the Dr.'s office was 253. I weighed in at 204 the day of surgery. I'm looking so forward to a new lifestyle and a whole new life. This is the best thing I've ever done for myself. The only pain or problem I've had so far is the sharp upper chest pains associated with gas. I'm talking "take your breath away" pain. Can't wait for that to go away. Anyway, just wanted to introduce myself. Wish me luck, Churchmouse

jsm - I am one week out and I also was very scared - still a small amount. But I can tell you this. I've gotten to two different restuarants with my kiddos and hubby and I'm not even interested in their food. I've lost 22.5 lbs in two weeks = one week preop and one week postop. I believe this sleeve will work for you if you follow the program... Now I have a friend that had the complete bypass a week before myself and she's gained weigh but in talking with her she's been eating small amounts of food the first week - hello... my doctor doesn't have me eating pureed food until three weeks out. You must be completed and work the tool. Hope this gives you some insight.

Weds October 24th will be my 6 month post op day. Currently I am down 100 pds from surgery. I couldn't be happier with my results and my decision to have my sleeve surgery. I live life 100% normal, the only difference is I eat a LOT smaller portions than I use to. I have a friend who had bypass about 8 weeks before my surgery and he has had nothing but problems. So happy I choose the sleeve. If your thinking about the sleeve do it! So glad I did!

Over 200 pounds down!
reallyrosy replied to Dashofpixiedust8's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Dash....me too. I get on the scale and automatically say 306. I still dont trust that I was ever in the 'onederland'...I was! I have witnesses to it. I want to believe I will get back to the ones and I did this novembe r during my trip to israel. I hope to get back to the ones end of this month when I visit in fla. But it never stays there. Invariably I get a cold or something requiring prednisone and I go haywire. Hard to accept this as the status quo but better than 3xx or 4xx -
Dear Nathalie, I heard that from the professionals in my program as well... including doctors, nurses, and therapists... however, RNY was a definite NO for me, so they finally agreed to do the lapband. (Though I could tell by the looks I got that they didn't think it would be very successful.) I was going through some major changes in my life as well and had struggled (and I mean struggled!) to get just nine pounds off before the surgery. (They would have been much happier with more weight loss before surgery, and I probably have "not very compliant" written somewhere all over my charts! LOL) Well, I am eight months out and down 91 pounds and still losing! YAY! YOUR determination is what will make it work for you. I didn't want to compromise my health with the RNY and I AM SO GLAD I didn't. My "gut feeling" (no pun intended! LOL) was to do the lapband. Everyone is different, and many do better with bypass, but for me, I KNEW I didn't want to go that route and I was determined to make this work and it is! YAY! It really is YOUR decision. Their advise is helpful and certainly to be considered, but in the end it is YOUR body. SO, READ, READ, READ everything you can get your hands on so you can make an informed decision for YOURSELF! Blessings to you, Mary

Hey everyone. I had bypass surgery on 7/28 and am almost 3 weeks post-op. Lost 30 pounds from surgery date to first appointment afterwards, only 10 days! Handled clear and full liquids pretty well, finding it challenging to get enough fluids, however, just not that thirsty. Anyone having trouble with cravings? I'm not hungry, so it's clearly in my head. Any tips on keeping it off my brain? I have no problem during the 60+ hours away at work, it's just at home. Thanks!!

Had Gastric Bypass Surgery on 9/11/14
Calvin "Casey" posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hello Everyone My name is Casey, I have been on my weight loss journey since April 72014. I lost 100 lbs before my surgery. I had my surgery at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center in Baltimore Md. My surgeon is Dr. Christopher You. I am on day 9 and everything is getting better. I had a couple times where I could not believe I did it and got a little depressed. I sometimes feel like I am never going to be able to eat normal foods again instead of liquids. One of my favorite places to eat is Chipotle, and I like the rice there. Has anyone tried to eat chipotle rice after surgery? -
I was just wondering if anyone could provide info as to pain level after conversion from band to sleeve? When I had my band installed I was up and walking around within hours. Night nurse that took care of me said only way they knew I was that patient was because I had an iv in my arm. I am tired of this sore port that I have on my belly and I'm almost positive I am going to get sleeved. A little nervous about the removing of my stomach but only other option is full bypass.... Anyways if anyone could help with info that would be great!!! Thanks
