Revision surgery: Sleeve to Gastric Bypass-Need Help
PerezL84 posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I am 36years old and after almost 7 years post-op from my sleeve surgery, I've gained ALL the weight back over the course of these years. I know..how? Well, I had two jobs and school and no time for "myself." Managing all three of these commitments, I also started by old eating habits in eating junk food and fast food since there was no time for cooking and meal-prepping. So after my first visit, I asked my doctor if it was possible to get a re-sleeve. He discouraged me and said he strongly recommends a revision to the gastric bypass. I am a little nervous since I've heard so many things from my friends about malnutrition, having to randomly use the bathroom any type you eat, and possible depression. Not sure if anyone here can help me in making this decision. I have a meeting with my doctor on July 7th and I want to be ready to tell him with confidence that I am ready to have a revision to the Gastric Bypass. Please tell me what should I be expecting, any concerns, any questions that I should raise? -
You Should Not Consider Bariatric Surgery if..
ribearty replied to No game's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
While I am new with the sleeve, I had a lap band for 6 + years which makes me a revision patient. When I had my band put in, I never thought it would have to come out. I planned on being a one time wls patient. I am so fortunate to have gotten a second chance. This has to wok for me for several reasons: because my insurance company only pays for one surgery unless there is a device failure or complication related to the surgery. Since I am a revision patient, I have the baggage of knowing that one surgery didn't work already, I am over 50 post menopausal revision patients tend to not lose as quickly as a virgin wls patient. I believe I have the right mind set and this will work. In my opinion it seems many people think I had wls, I am guaranteed to lose weight. I can continue to eat what I ate before but in smaller amounts. It amazes me when people are posting how they are eating foods too early. As a previous poster said if following their own opinion worked, why did they have to resort to WLS? I guess I fall into the mean category when I post replies to people on these type of topics of eating too soon. I tend to get a lot of flack. I am not perfect with my eating and do not profess to be. As Butter said during the honeymoon period it is easier. This is the time to make good choices and install the healthy eating habits that can get you to your goal at the end. WLS is not a magic wand or pill you can take and it automatically happens. It requires hard work and once you get to goal, then the works begins to stay there. As all of us have been on diets before and lost weight, you know the major reason we regained the weight and probably more is because we didn't maintain healthy eating habits and possibly quit exercising. I am off my soap box now. -
Got my date, 6/8/15!!! I'm a teacher so summer works best. I am 28 years young but have had bad diabetes since I was 18. The band worked at first, lost 80lbs from my highest weight...but I hate it now. Gained almost all weight back and didn't help my diabetes like I was promised. Was looking at the sleeve revision but my Dr recommended RNY instead...I am hoping RNY helps. Anyone else diabetic with some encouraging words?

Armygalbonnie replied to Dinks97420's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That was the first question I asked regarding surgery Drains? Fortunately, my Dr only uses them on those patients that are having revisions. I've had 5 drains in the past, and it is the worst pain EVER!!! I'm glad your are OUT and you are on the road to recovery. Best of luck with everything! Oh and BTW, Happy Birthday! -

Need to hear from VSG to DS revisioners

Good luck today! Wishing you a great surgery and an amazing post-op! The reflux seems to be a thing when I don’t sleep slightly inclined. The dr said it would subside over time but told me to get Pepcid complete chewable... LIFESAVER. I take one if it happens and it knocks it out immediately but it hasn’t been much of a thing the last few days. No bathroom issues yet... first poop (sorry lol) was last night and it was fine. Not real gassy or anything like that. But I haven’t eaten anything solid yet so only time will tell lol. I can already tell weight loss is slower this go round, because I kept a good chart with the VSG. By now I had lost 11 lbs and now I’m at 6, excluding the 11lbs all the hospital IV fluids put on me. Realistically, revision alone I expect maybe 75-100. With my trainer I hope to lose 150. I’m much more motivated to exercise now because I’m not doing this again. Whew, no way! I’ve already started back walking up to 20 mins approved by my doctor. Please give us an update when you can! -
Help with decision!:)

85% of people who get the Lapband later have a revision to the Sleeve. Research the statistics and they will tell you why the sleeve is a better choice. -
My insurance company has "revision" guidelines for WLS as a completely separate benefit so that may be something to look in to.

Forced to do Bypass
Losingit2018 replied to Christina.Rose's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I just revised from sleeve to bypass 8 weeks ago. Like you I was afraid if the. Bypass. I got the sleeve early 2018 ended up with large hernia and gerd. now that I have the bypass, I am very happy with it. As long as you keep up with having bloodwork checked, take your vitamins and eat healthy, there is nothing to fear from the bypass. you have to do this or deal with cancer. There is no other option. Please make peace with it so that you can get healthy. You will be glad that you did it I once it is behind you. My only regret is that I did not start out with bypass and avoid having surgery twice. hang in there and come here for support. Please keep us updated as well. You got this. -
VSG to Bypass (RNY) due to stricture and hernia
catwoman7 replied to 2B2B_2bs's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I'm not a revision patient, but I just wanted to say with the exception of iron (some people don't absorb oral iron well and have to have iron infusions - although the vast majority of us absorb oral iron just fine), malabsorption is pretty uncommon as long as you keep on top of your supplements. -
I had the sleeve in 2016 then had two babies and ultimately, regained almost all of it back. I have PCOS and infertility (had to do IVF), but no gerd. Will I be approved for revision from regain? I have BCBSIL PPO.

True Results-Houston
browneyedgirl89 replied to SwissMiss's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
i was banded at true results houston on june 10 2011. I HATE my band and the nurses always piss me off. everytime i went it it seemed i had a pouch. so i would be put on a 2 week liquid diet, go back, and still had a pouch. after doing that for about 8 months i finally hit my breaking point and decided to start talking about revising to a sleeve. i have been absolutely miserable with my band, severe acid reflux, vomiting, you name it, i have it. i had all my liquid removed in november, and they sent me to dr holliss office in pearland to talk about revision. i just think it is funny though that before i got my band, they said nothing but negative things about the sleeve and bypass, yet now everyone i talk to that works at true results and dr holliss office say nothing but horrible things about the band. im like, why the hell didnt you tell me this before i got banded?? one of the PAs at TR even told me she had the band and wished she would have got the sleeve instead. its ridiculous. and it really bugs me that they never really talked about all the negative things that could happen with the band before surgery, they made it sound so easy and simple. basically, they are all full of sh99 and i advise ANYONE who has not been banded yet to run and get the sleeve! -
lap band revision after slippage
tyler13 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Had a revision surgery done on 10-16-10. Wasn't sure my band could be left in or not. But with great luck I was able to keep it. They did a endoscopy to make sure my stomach tissue was still ok. So now its starting all over again. No fluid in band now, will see maybe in 2 weeks they will put some in. Although can't eat a whole lot now anyway. Question for all banders out there, did any of you suddenly start your monthly cycle after surgery. I am mid cycle and am having a period now. Also anyone having trouble taking oxycodone pain meds? It makes me not able to focus my eyes. -
male only Help guys -- Band or Sleeve? I'm scheduled for band Feb.1
outlaw posted a topic in The Guys’ Room
I've done a ton of research all over the net and here, but I'm getting cold feet at the moment. I've read of lots of people that are happy they did the band, have lost a lot of weight, happy now, etc. I understand that its just a tool, and it will take work, lifestyle change, exercise, etc. I'm 48, 330, 6'1, and am determined to finally do something about my weight. In my 30's, I went from 283 down to 211, but have slowly put all that back on plus more over the last 20 years. For as many 'happy' band stories that I read about, I see as many or more disasters: slime, dumping (whatever that is), a lot of pain, slipping, having to get the band removed, etc. Almost all of these disaster people have said they needed WLS, and revised to the sleeve. Every one of them wished they had gone with the sleeve in the first place. I know there are risks with both, and issues with both, but can that many people be wrong, wishing they had just done sleeve first? Help with advice please people, I'm scheduled for band surgery in three weeks, and am considering either going with sleeve or forgetting WLS altogether. -
The Fat Girl Wakes Up
Tiffykins replied to BZButterfly79's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The system showed that you quoted my reply on this thread, but I'm not sure if that was your intent. But, I wanted to clear up any possible misconceptions. Both of my surgeries were covered by insurance. I was referred to the band surgeon, and all was fine until I started complaining about pain and issues with my band. I did seek out my revision surgeon, and since Tricare doesn't cover VSG outside of MTFs, he was my best option with his experience level, and stats I felt confident in surgeon choice. I could have self-paid, but honestly, it wasn't realistic for me to do so with a husband in Afghanistan. -
Help with decision!:)

Hi, I'm no expert but my doc says he won't put any more bands in. He does bypass or sleeve only. Says its because he's done too many band to sleeve revisions over the years. -
85% convinced. How do I get to 100%?
marysminute replied to Tootles1975's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
It's just if/when the meds fail (which I think they are starting to) the next step is having brain surgery. The brain surgery is way worse than stomach surgery. There's lots of revisions and needing lots of more surgeries... I could potentially have wls and still need brain surgery... But time will tell. -
male only Help - scheduled for Band on Feb 1, should I do Sleeve?
outlaw posted a topic in The Guys’ Room
Any thoughts and advice are welcomed. I've done a ton of research on various WLS options, and have heard both success and horror stories for both Band and Sleeve. What made you decide to get the sleeve? Did you start with the Band and revised to sleeve? If so, why? I know that both take work and a lifestyle change - I just want some honest unbiased opinions on why you think one is better than the other. -

Help - scheduled for Band on Feb 1, should I do Sleeve?
qdh replied to outlaw's topic in The Guys’ Room
Well I have a band. I am here because I'm hoping to be approved for a sleeve revision. I'm not the typical band horror story (I.e. erosion, slips, reflux, etc). I was banded 09/2008 and still haven't reached any type of consistency. I can eat a meal today and it is fine...Tomorrow I can go for leftovers and not be able to keep any of it down...SAME MEAL. My story is only my story. Plenty of people have done well with the band...just not my case. I'm not in the convincing business, but if it helps...regardless if my insurance approves a revision to sleeve, I'm definitely getting this band removed. It gets annoying in social settings having to excuse yourself. I'm still noticeably overweight and some people that don't know I even have a band have rumored that I have an eating disorder. Now that is kinda funny, but not really. My reason for getting a band vs. bypass (didn't know too much about the sleeve when I was in the market for wls) was the fact that my body would remain as close to it's natural state as possible. Now for my 20/20 hind sight...I just don't think the band was a good idea. AND my health is still at risk... But again...that is my PERSONAL opinion. Another thing to consider...that I didn't...is life evolves. I never knew I'd keep getting promoted and my job has moved me 3 times since 09/2008. Some surgeons won't accept patients from out of town. I've been with my job 12 yrs, but another thing some may want to consider is if you switch insurance companies. Some companies won't cover band fills from a surgery they didn't authorize. None of that has been a problem for me, but I'm 31. It is very rare for most people my age ( well in these days, any age)to have the same job and insurance for 12 yrs. I'm not trying to come across high and mighty nor as a know it all. You asked. When I reach out for opinions I don't like people to hold back. I was just trying to throw some things out there for you to consider. Or....you could be a total band success and negate everything I've said...lol Good luck
