    October surgery friends??

I'm doing well. Sleeve was 10/18, I've lost 18# so far and have hit a plateau. Coming up on 4 weeks Monday, I use the Lose it app as it worked before surgery when I lost 60# by eating healthy and exercising. Of course I wasn't using it when I regained 30 of that 60. Anyway, with the small amount of food I take in as well as exercise, I'm barely taking in any calories. I'm curious if that's part of the plateau although I know everyone hits it. Anyone else hit that plateau?

    Jonesing for a Hot Dog

I am toward the end of my soft phase and decided I really wanted a hot dog. I have always liked Field Roast's vegan frankfurters. Lower in calories (190), no cholesterol, low in sugar and carbs and 20g of protein. I also discovered these Keto hot dog buns made from the Lewis Bake Shop that are not made with flour. 1g net carb, 70 calories per bun, low in fat and, the kicker, 10g of protein. I ended up only eating 2/3 of it but, MAN, was it good. I got my hot dog, got my protein, got my veggies and don't feel bloated or full. Highly recommend this combo.

13 years later and - I Love my band

For those who love their band and have had weight loss success would u mind sharing your meal plan what foods you eat what foods or drinks you avoid and meal sizes do u weigh or count calories?
  4. Hi there - when I got to that point (under 20 pounds from goal), my surgeon did recommend resistance training. Not in order to burn off calories, but to add muscle which raises your BMR. I adopted a beginner's dumbell routine (it was at the height of the pandemic so I couldn't go to the gym) and started doing it 3 times a week. Within 2 weeks the scale was moving again.

One Year Out, Looking For Advice

I am also at the one year mark and have about 15 pounds to go. I don't find myself snacking BUT my body is fighting to keep every ounce of fat on. Its a battle for me to try to cut back because then I am constantly feeling like I am not getting enough protein in or I feel "cheated" (and I am not really I just feel that way) if I try to cut back. I have never really focused on calories but instead on protein so to me its super hard to try to cut back because then I am afraid I am shorting myself something necessary...... I know in my heart of hearts I should focus on working out more but I am just not a fan of exercise ....that may be the answer for me and that sticky 15 pounds.

    Any December 2021 bypass people?

Hi! December 6th here, this has been a crazy long process for me, and I was afraid it wouldn't happen this year, but I'm slipping in under the wire, lol. I have been considering this surgery for over 10 years, finally got to a point where I am ready and sure of my decision (no easy feat for an indecisive and anxious person like myself), and have been seeing my PCP for a year and a half in preparation for this (insurance requires 6 months, but because of CVD it was hard to get appointments sometimes, so it stretched things out). I finally got the go-ahead from my surgeon and insurance company in the end of August, but was told they were canceling all elective surgeries in my region and they were booking out into mid-November, so I thought there is no way they are going to get me in before the end of the year with all of the cancellations, rescheduling, and not actually knowing when surgeries can be booked again, and I met my deductible this year. That mean that if I don't get the surgery done this year, it will cost me thousands more out of pocket, and at that point, I was giving up and going to Mexico. Well, surgery is in 25 days, and I am 5 days into my prescribed preop diet (which I despise, I have texture sensitivity issues and protein shakes are ick), and I was petrified. I am doing well so far, not as bad as I thought, I am allotted 5 Optifast shakes (can sub one of those for a bar or soup daily) and one food meal with 1/2 c. lean protein, 1-2 c. non-starchy vegetables, 1 tsp fat, and one serving of fruit, with unlimited (but reasonable amounts, the calories do still add up) sugar-free popsicles, dill pickles, cucumbers, and celery, no dairy, vinegars and mustard allowed, salt-free seasonings as well. It really hasn't been so bad, but I prefer volume at this stage, so raw veggies are my daily food meal, but I miss something warm and comforting in the chilly weather. I find that I'm not even craving junk food, like, a bowl of garlicky black or pinto beans would be so good right now, lol, but no starches, so no beans. Anyhow, those are my thoughts, if anyone cares to share as well. HW: 400+ (no scale at that time, highest measured weight was 399) SW: 384 CW: 338 GW: Healthy and active

Regrets for a Food & Wine Lover?

It's been helpful to read the responses here. While I'm not exactly a foodie, I enjoy cooking and strong flavors. At home, I am still cooking new things and trying different recipes. I try to select generally healthy recipes and do additional tweaking with fresh and/or healthy ingredients. I'm still struggling with cooking smaller portions. We have a reservation at an all-inclusive in Mexico in January. I will be 13 mos. post op. I'm working on strategies to help me navigate. On the positive side, we have been to this resort before and know what they have to offer. It is a small, boutique resort and they are willing, within reason, to cook to order. The last time we were there we joked that it may be the first vacation on which we lost weight due to eating so much fresh seafood and grilled vegetables by choice. I think alcohol will be a bigger struggle for me. I realize that any of the syrupy, tropical drinks will not work. The resort is willing to make skinny versions of anything on request. But empty calories are empty calories. I've not had much to drink since surgery. It hasn't bothered me as much as I thought it would. I think that's because I want to maximize my losing potential in the first year. What I have had to drink, has not been as tasty as it seemed in the past. I was already at the age where I can afford to drink decent liquor over quantity, but even the reasonably good brands just didn't taste quite like I remembered. While I fully intend to give myself some grace to indulge within reason, I still want to make the best choices I can I'd love to hear thoughts and advice.
  8. I think you’ve probably answered your own question in that you realise you’ve gained a bad habit, and why. It’s going to take determination and willpower to break that habit and eat differently. If you’re now getting enough food and your weight loss has stopped, you don’t need to snack - it’s as simple as that. The stopping of snacking is not so easy, because you have to retrain your brain. It may be that you need to construct some other ‘habits’ by working out something to do instead of snacking. If you DO want to snack, put aside small portions of healthy snacks you will allow yourself, but only so many in the day. Calorie count them if necessary. Avoid making your snacks sweets and chips. You must have other, healthy things, you could eat. But don’t allow yourself to snack too much anyway - find a strategy. Sticking to it at first will be hard, but like with any habit, it can be broken and a new habit can be achieved. You do not want to start gaining again, because it’s demoralising and you don't want that. Your brain is telling you that you NEED these unhealthy things - you don’t. You can retrain it!
  9. Hello! This is my first post on a weight loss surgery forum. Just seeking advice for some developed bad habits. I am officially one year post op from my gastric sleeve. I am 5'1 and 133 pounds now and 10 pounds away from my goal weight. At this point, I've found it very difficult to loose more weight. I'm looking for advice on how to get back in gear. I've found that I'm eating through the entire day, and I'm constantly thinking about food. I didn't even do that before surgery. After my operation, I wasn't getting enough calories, at max 300-500 a day, even 6 months out. I just couldn't eat a lot during meals and never felt hungry. My nutritionist advised to snack(healthily of course) throughout the day, and I was able to increase my daily calories to 900 on average. About 9 months post op, I was able to eat enough calories without having to snack as frequently. But I find that now I can't stop snacking throughout the day. And I've gone to eating sweets and chips etc. Even if I'm not hungry. All my brain can think about is "what can I eat next". Because I had to force myself to eat more throughout the day, I feel like now my body has gotten in the habit of constantly wanting food, even when I don't need it. And I've been really craving junk food and snack food. What are some tips to help myself from getting out of this habit? I'm maintaining my weight now, and not gaining. But I feel like I will eventually gain if I keep this up, I don't want it to derail all my hard work. I still do want to get to my goal weight. I do a boot camp 3-4 days a week for 7 months now. But I haven't lost any weight in over 3 months. I know it's a mindset thing, but I would appreciate any tips. :( Thanks!
  10. DS patients malabsorb a lot more calories than other patients - so you'll likely be able to eat a lot more than your current 1500-1600. I'm not a DS patient and there aren't too many of them around, but I know a lot of them seem to eat a lot of fat - that would certainly bump up your calories pretty significantly... are you still in touch with your clinic? Maybe a dietitian could help with this? Or else check on one of the DS threads if they're still active and see what others who've had that surgery have done.

How do you stop losing after a DS/Sadi procedure?

Thanks @Arabesque, I appreciate your advice. I definitely don’t have a small frame, I’m 4cms wider than the wide range for females lol! I’m up around the 1500 to 1600 calories now and still losing but am struggling to eat more than that in a day at the moment. It’s so strange to have this problem when it’s been the opposite my whole life!! I’ll take your advice and go shopping tomorrow to find some higher calorie protein bars and healthy snacks to introduce throughout the day. Mr Newman dressings are the best!! Thanks again
  12. No stupid questions here. It’s the same way for all of us - just slowly up your calories until your weight loss stops with some fluctuation. It can take time to stop losing. I added snacks (combinations of yoghurt, protein bar, cheese sticks, hummus, chia pudding, multi or whole grain crackers, nuts, fruit,) still tried to keep low fat (except for salad dressing - damn you Mr Newman), low sugar, only a few good complex carbs & everything, bar fruit, with protein. I don’t eat as many snacks now as I can physically eat more in a meal. And yes, I did feel like I was eating all day. I was also s still seeing my dietician for the first 5 months of maintenance (stopped with COVID) so she was checking what I was adding & made a couple of suggestions. The calories I need to maintain will be different to what you need. I consume about 1200 - 1300 calories (I’m shorter than you, have a small frame, am in my mid 50s, not very active & maintain at a lower weight). Others can consume a lot more. My surgeon & GP initially told me to put on a couple of kgs but I weigh less now & they’re both happy with my weight.
  13. Hi everyone, This may seem like a stupid question but for those of you in maintenance, what foods and how many calories do you consume each day to maintain? I’m asking because my doctor told me to stop losing and go into maintenance a few kilos ago but I’m finding that I can’t eat enough at the moment to get to maintenance. If I try eating foods that are too high in calories and fat, it seems to flush out even more and more quickly. I don’t digest breads and pasta well so just cranking up on those carbs won’t work. I would love to hear about your tips and tricks or meal plans to stay healthy and maintain your weight. Any help would be appreciated as my doctor isn’t very helpful in that area and I don’t have a nutritionist. Thanks in advance
  14. Mushrooms! You've gotta blend the crap out of them, or chop them super tiny...but mushrooms are so good. Lots of protien, lots of fiber, low calories. I liked mashed potatoes after surgery. They were on my surgeon's list...I know some programs forbid them...but they were wonderful with olive oil butter and my dietician was cool with them. Sweet potatoes, too. Nut butters without the sugar. Coco wheats and oatmeal were also ok on my surgeon's list. I love coco wheats because they have tons of iron. Soups with beans, potatoes and mushrooms were big favorites for me.

    Going back to work

I'm with @catwoman7 - Joe Schmo gets told I'm protein-first and calorie-restricted (believable, and these days my calorie count is 1000-1400 a day, which is strict but not "omg you're gonna starve"). But other obese people get the truth. And the one person who found out and then confronted me for lying got, "Given how you just reacted to the idea of the surgery, are you surprised I didn't want to tell you?"

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

I’m feeling great. Finally getting all my water in. I’m looking for stuff to eat that’s not crazy in calories. 600 calories a day goes super quick. I cannot drink another shake.
  18. I don’t match either but much of what you will experience is individual anyway. We’re all different in how we recover, our pre existing medical conditions, genetics, age, gender, starting weight, length of time being overweight, etc. There will be similarities but also differences. @lizonaplane is correct. The amount of hair you lose & how long it persists is individual. Your natural hair loss cycle is accelerated from the shock of the surgery & weight loss & your initial low calorie intake. You really just have to ride it out. Keep up your protein (breaks down into the amino acids which grow hair & nails & aids skin health). Biotin only may make your new growth hair stronger not help your body grow more hair. How much loose skin you have is influenced by factors like age (skin loses elastin as you age), how much weight you lose & how long you were overweight, & genetics (luck of the gene pool). It won’t all go away. Once your skin is stretched out, & after whatever bounce back you may get has passed, that’s it. Think of an old hair band stretched out from overuse. Your skin is the same. Some say weight training can help to fill in the loose skin with muscle but depends on how much muscle you want. I carried my obese weight for about 3 or 4 years so not really that long. When I got down to my usual overweight range I had very little loose skin (little pinches) but when I got to my lowest weight I had lots more (big pinches). Still not a lot really especially considering my age & it’s easily hidden under my clothes including body con dresses. No surgery for me. You tend to lose weight in the same way you put on & carried your weight. If you carried more of your weight in your tummy it will likely be the last place you’ll lose it in comparison. I carried my weight pretty evenly: thighs, butt, tummy, breasts. Benefit of an hour glass figure I guess & I lost it much the same even way. Take regular body measurements to track your weight loss too. Sometimes it shows on a tape measure before it does on the scales. I went from a 18E to a 10E (pretty empty upper breasts now though). Remember an E cup on a size 18 is much bigger than a size 10 one so while the cup size is the same my breasts are smaller.

How to Stop Grazing? Please Help!

I take ages to eat a meal - 30 to 60 minutes or more - so in a way I graze. It allows me to eat that little bit more so I can maintain. I also snack. Fewer times a day now then I initially did when trying to maintain because of the prolonged eating. If we’re honest we all experience times when we just want a little mindless munching. Guess the two things to consider are what are you grazing on & why are you grazing? I snack on foods that contain between 5g (a cheese stick) & 20g (yoghurt) protein not including fruit & are good sources of essential nutrients. On those days when I want something (usually salty) I ask myself why I want it. I also try to wait 30 minutes &/or look for something to do to take my mind off the craving. You may find this helpful if it is boredom that’s driving you to munch. (By the way, what is it about the afternoons & eating? My time between eating dramatically decreases as the day passes.) I also ensure there’s nothing in the cupboard that’s a temptation or empty calories. Easier of course if you don’t have family members to consider. If I do weaken I only have multi grain rice crackers or roasted fava beans in my pantry. It’s not always easy to find what best works for you. You may find grazing on many little meals, grazing on one meal for a long time or snacking a way of ensuring you consume the calories you need to maintain.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

I feel a similar way, not hungry at all throughout the day, but get hungry late at night… which we know is not the best time to consume all your calories even if it is through a shake and broth.
  21. Thanks for the replies. All of your advice is noted Quick update ! I increased my lunch by 100 calories which was a lean meat protein salad. And wow it made a difference, didnt feel tired or as hungry by the end of work. Gonna look into decent salads and use the energy to do exercise. I have had a couple of blood tests since WLS and nothing stood out...anyway gonna try again with the vitamin gummies, melts, patches.... anything is better than nothing I guess.
  22. LIke @Jaelzion, im a grazer. Its what i've got to do as I am limited as to what i can eat at one sitting...both during weight loss phase AND in maintenance (but more so in maintenance as a need to keep calories up) I'm 3 years post op (and been maintaining my current weight consistently for almost 2.5 years) and this way of eating hasn't (yet) resulted in any unintended weight gain. For ME it doesn't seem to matter how often or what I'm eating...just total calories...so it doesn't matter if eat 2000 cals in 3 meals or if its spread out in 15 small snacks throughout the the day....end result is still the same.
  23. I'm not there yet since I just had surgery last month, but my restriction post surgery is so high I won't be surprised if I can only graze. I get maybe an ounce down and I'm too full for anything else. Spreading your calories out is smart and better for your blood sugar anyway.

How to Stop Grazing? Please Help!

Grazing has become my normal way of eating. I rarely sit down for a full meal. Instead I eat around six mini-meals throughout the day. It's the same number of calories because I am not grazing AND eating meals. I'm spreading the day's calories across a longer time period. And of course, I'm eating on plan, nutrient dense, protein-rich food and not junk. I start with protein coffee in the morning and generally finish up with a Dannon Light & Fit yogurt before bed, eating something about every two hours. So far it works for me.

    Post op day 2

Post op day 5 after sleeping most of the day yesterday I woke up early with my 5.5 year old and let my husband sleep in. I ready to get up anyways because I guess of maybe reflux. I’ve never had it before but something in my sternum area was bothering me. my belly button incision is still pretty sore while getting up, bending over, and to the touch. It doesn’t, and never did require anything more than Tylenol (which thankfully I have the dissolvable). I had little meltdown involving some tears over trying to stomach yet again another protein shake I hate. Everyone’s beloved fairlife can go straight to hell. So I haven’t even reached 10g of protein yet people, imma die. Also I need to find another multi vitamin. so I pick myself up and brush my tank teeth (all this fake sweet stuff in protein waters/shakes/vitamins/chewable gas x/dissolvable Tylenol/sugar jello/sugar free popsicles is giving the worse taste in my mouth). i did manage with no problem 32 oz of water, 1/2 ounce at time using a med cup, spaced 3 min apart sometimes longer if was doing something. My goal tomorrow is to increase that by another 16 oz, we’ll see. Ok so after feeling like I was being a major baby about the cussing protein shakes I decided to white knuckle it and do 1/2 oz shots with 5 min in between. I had a cup of water for rinsing my mouth out and an empty cup to spit the rinse into between shots. And I managed 2 oz. and the after taste was STILL after the rinse. I had a sugar free popsicle for the first time, and even though I am totally over artificial sweeteners, it felt nice to bite into something. hungry and desperate for something that was palatable, I sent my husband to Panera to get 4 cups of different soups. I chose to strain the broccoli and cheese soup and water it down to slide off of spoon. I ate 1/4 cup by toddler spoonfuls every 3 min. I had to reheat 3 times for 19 sec. I wanted to eat the entire cup, but atlas I did not. I was satisfied and then passed out for a nap. I will be having that for dinner as well. Healthy? Not really, but I need some motherfarten calories, ANYTHING that doesn’t make me gag. today was better than yesterday. I took a lovely shower and did my hair. the end.
