Ok I’m on my last month with dietician visits & last doctor visit. Bloodwork, psych done & Doctor letter of approval finished. The end is so close! I started this journey thinking only about the sleeve. Delays from Covid made this process longer and the more research I did, the more I came across sleeve conversion to bypass. I’ve had a change of heart and looking more into bypass because of the long term success rate. I’ve spent this entire year reaching for this goal and suddenly I’ve changed my mind on surgery type. Anybody else feel this way? Love any feedback right now. I’m 36 years old, can’t have anymore kids and I want the long term help to be successful at weight loss.

I had my first appointment with Dr. Robinson and his Assistant on Monday, and I am shocked! This process seems like it is going to fly by! Here's how it went: I was scheduled for 2:30 but got there at 2:00, so they sat me down with paperwork to fill out. It included all the expected questions, including lists of failed diets, weights throughout your life, co-morbidities,etc. It took about ten minutes, and then they took me in early. The Physician's Assistant (to be called P.A. from the point on) took my blood pressure with a cuff that actually fits me, and it turns out my blood pressure is pretty darn good for a 300 lb. girl! 126/74. They weighed and measured me. We discussed the potential risks of banding, why I wanted the band vs. bypass, etc. It was all pretty straight forward. Then doctor Robinson came in. Dr. Robinson is a man of very few words, but I am not going to him for emotional support. I am seeking him because he seems intelligent, honest and open. He told me right off the bat that I am going to need a boob lift and lower body life after surgery. He also implied that if I mention later on down the road that my boobs sagging cause back pain, and the if I start getting rashes under my extra skin, that I will be able to get both procedures covered by insurance. He then laid me down on the table, looked at my belly, and told me to loose 20-25 lbs. beore surgery. He told me he wants to see me in four weeks for a follow up. If, at that 4 week followup, I have lost 10 lbs, then he will schedule me for surgery. I was told that we're looking at the first week of August, possibly!!!! I left with a to-do list that states which tests I have to have done, which medical records to have transferred, and how to pay the program fee. I have to get an upper GI, see the nutritionist and the psychologist, have a sleep study and have some blood drawn. All of those except for the sleep study can be done on the same day, I was told! Now I am just sitting here at home, waiting for the phone to ring with my appointment dates from his secretary. I am SO ready to go!!!!! Tomorrow is the lap band support group, and I am really debating going!

Went in to see my Doc today..Great News!!!
Mimilou2004 replied to CaliGirl626's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Congratulations, Sooner, on your improved health. Your weight loss is good, too. I was also banded on 10/7/08 and have lost 28 pounds. I wish it had been more but I actually gained 11 pounds before my first fill in November. Mimi -
Hey guys, I'm wondering how long after my bypass I should wait before I can start to do some mild upper body work with dumbbells? I've had a personal trainer for years up until about 9 months ago (when I had an illness AND moved country) so my technique is pretty good. I just want to do bicep curls, some tricep work, shoulder presses, some vertical rows - even with light weights. Any experience or tips from you gents? Cheers, J

How did this turn into insulting bypass people? :faint: Thirty-seen pounds in two months is fabulous. Why in the world do you think it's not? I "only" lost 23.2 pounds my first two months. I've never had an 18 pounds lost month and I don't consider myself a failure, a slow loser or anything else other than a success. It's really important to focus on the positive, on the great strides you are making towards good health and what you've accomplished that you've never managed before. Enjoy the journey instead of stressing over what you cannot control. WOrk your plan and your plan will work for you.

This doctor has been brought up many many times before. Search him name and you'll find lots of posts. In short, he has an agenda to disparage the lapband so that patients will get the mini gastric bypass from him. It should be noted that this is a procedure that is not well-regarded amongst bariatric surgeons. In fact, I think you'll even find a post from a surgeon somewhere around here that talks about that fact. Anyone that advertises on youtube and has such an incredibly awful website should give you a pretty good indication of what he's all about. Oh, BTW, the 'studies' that he references are not at all comprehensive and are extremely limited in their scope.

How do I get the taste of whey to go away!
cloud9 replied to cloud9's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Closest Nutrishop is 5 hours away but in a town I will be visiting in November - so will put it on my Go See list while there!! I also tried to purchase online but they do not offer such - darn it could not find it on Amazon either. Thank you again! -
Even though it is just around the house I've been walking and walking and feeling better. I think I slept much too long last night in just one position which didn't help much. I only stayed one night in the hospital and between those things on my legs pumping up and down and the blood pressure monitor and all the interns I got NO rest, so I made up for it last night. I'm happy to say I'm feeling better...have no gas, and not hungry. I have absolutely no regrets over having this surgery. It is something that because of this forum I was well prepared for. I have had 5-way-bypass surgery and the pain from that can't even compare to this. I was 6 mo. recovering from that excruciating pain. I know my age isn't helping much either, but I'm going to do everything I can to make this work. Thanks all for all the support. God Bless, Dody

My Dr. Tried To Sway Me To Gastric Bypass/sleeve...help
Cocoabean replied to Mrs. 2012 Banded's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
http://www.thinnertimes.com/weight-loss-surgery/wls-basics/weight-loss-surgery-comparison.html Above is a chart comparing various WLS procedures. Bypass and sleeve have a higher excess weight loss percentage than banding. They are also a "set it and forget it" procedure, not needing the aftercare that a band needs. On the flip side, they have higher rates of severe complications. -
My Dr. Tried To Sway Me To Gastric Bypass/sleeve...help
NickiHill replied to Mrs. 2012 Banded's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Girl! Go for the surgery that YOU want. Its nice that he put those options out there for you but there are a lot of other MORE serious health risks with those surgeries also. I chose the band because honestly, I have seen NEG NEG NEG about the sleeve and bypass is DANGEROUS from the research I have done. I was banded 8-12-11 and have lost 58 pounds -
My Dr. Tried To Sway Me To Gastric Bypass/sleeve...help
Mrs. 2012 Banded replied to Mrs. 2012 Banded's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you for saying that! I thought my dr. had some sort of bypass quota to meet or something. Knowing that other dr.'s suggest that makes me feel better! -
Sweet eaters - what was your story with gastric bypass?
Djmohr replied to salubrino's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had bypass 9 months ago and prior to surgery sugar was critical in my life. Following the pre op and post op liquid requirements I broke that sugar habit. If I even smelled it would make me shy away. At first I told myself that sugar would make me dump but over time I learned that I get very very mild symptoms from dumping only if I over indulge. I am also very sensitive to artificial sweeteners of any kind so I use regular sugar and/or honey. This means I have to be extra careful or the sugar monster craving will come back for me. If I am truly having a craving for something sweet I will make sure that I have a bite or two but only after I have had my Protein and veggies. Then, there is little room and a bite of two satisfies me. I don't make a habit of it but every once in a while I will have a few bite of ice cream. I have also had a small piece of dark chocolate or a single cookie but for the most part it is rare. In 9 months I would say I have done this maybe 4 times for special occasions. I do eat pudding on a regular basis. Non sf, full fat in the small cups. If I need something sweet that is my go to and it does the trick. I have even baked for my husband and children/grandchildren. It just doesn't pull me in anymore. I would rather have some nice meat and veggies. -
Any January 11th Sleevers?
learningtoliveright posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Everyone! This is my first post since discovering this website. So far since my decision to have the gastric sleeve, my journey has been extremely easy compared to other posts that I read (thanks BCBS). My consultation appointment was on November 19th, and all testing is done and approved except for my upper endoscopy which is on the 20th of December. My surgery is scheduled for January 11th. I would really like to hear from others who are having surgery that date so that we can follow each other post-op. Please get in touch with me:) -
Anyone lose 150+ pounds with the sleeve?
AgentShepard replied to aliciac's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Yes, it's totally possible. My four-month surgiversary is next week and I've lost a little over 97 pounds, 73 of which were since surgery. (I'd love to hit 100 by then!) Obviously I've got more to lose than you do, which helps it go fast at first, but I've had outstanding results so far with a very smooth recovery. Also, since the surgery, my bad knee is down to the occasional twinge and I've been taken off two prescriptions, and my bloodwork results are A+ across the board. I also have a lot fewer painful issues (food hurting, throwing up, etc) than my friend who had bypass. I'm early yet, but so far, so good! -
I've known a couple people who had gastric bypass and had a lot of hair loss post op. I'm really hoping that this is just because they were being non compliment or something. Has anyone else known this to happen and does it happen to everyone?

Nervous.... Lap Band or Gastric Bypass?!
Manda87 replied to jenndubbd's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was 327 when I was banded. The reasons why I chose the band were: 1. It's reversible. 2. I have control. My band can be adjusted, and I won't have to just simply "deal" with just a smaller stomach. 3. Bypass patients will gain weight back. 4. I know a couple of people who had the bypass and they don't look too good. They look saggy. They lose weight too fast and they look saggy and sick. 5. I don't have nutritional deficiencies. 6. Lap Band patients don't have dumping syndrome (google it if you don't know what it is) 7. Surgery is minimally invasive. I have all of my organs and nothing had to be "rerouted." 8. If bypass patients want to make "adjustments" they have to have another surgery. I.e. doctors have to go in and restaple their stomach. 9. I'm sure the ladies that I know that had the bypass are not just losing fat - they are losing muscle. 10. Bypass has a higher risk of complications. Here's another list: Compare LAP-BAND® to Other Weight Loss Options | LAP-BAND® -
i was dx with pcos when i was 16 and discovered on my own i was IR went to my doc and educated her she agreed to put me on metformin. I took that for years but it never worked then i tried rezulin but like previously stated rats died ....... Last year i started Avandia and cha ching blood sugars started coming down. Then in November I started Lantus(24hr Insulin) it was a god send. now my sugars are less than 120. i have started decreasing units since i have surgery weds. Last Minute Change To The Sleeve
Nate replied to Nacol's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I got ya all beat LOL I went into the operating room for bypass surgery and woke up with a sleeve! Turns out my liver was still a tad large, so my Doc's first option was to cut me wide open and perform the bypass like that. But upon inspecting my insides with their handy dandy little camera, they discovered that I had a large amount of scar tissue and mesh in my abdomen from a hernia I had repaired 5 years ago. So opening me up was no longer an option, and he decided rather then not doing anything he would do the sleeve instead. I'm actually really glad he decided to do the sleeve instead of the bypass. Now I don't have a lifetime on mal absorption problems and B12 shots to worry about. -
Tomorrow will be my big day! How exciting, back in June I had an Attempted Gastric bypass n it failed due to not enough room to work inside towards my intestines, so this will bea 2nd attempt to get it doned i had to go on a liquid diet 2 weeks prior to loose a couple lbs n i lost 10lbs so hopefully this time it should be easier to get the surgery doned, also if the dr cAnt do the bypass they will do the lapband as a last resort. I really prayn ask for everyone here to please pray for me so that all goes good n for the dr to be able to do the bypass instead. Thank you all in advance
