  1. Hello there all! I have a swelling question for those of you who have had an extended TT, breast lift and augmentation. I have searched this forum and although I did find references to swelling, not an answer to my specific question. Like some on the forum, my upper abdomen looks bigger than I thought it would but the doctor says it is swelling. As far as I can tell he brought my abdomen skin down about 4 inches (I can tell because that is how much lower my port and port incision is now) I am almost 5 weeks out and seem to have quite a bit of swelling still, even around the scar and mons. For those of you who are 4 months past your surgery date (or more) - how far out were you when you felt like the swelling was gone? are there some past 4 months that are still swollen? I know I am still "new" but like many of you I am sure, I am anxious to see the end result. I do have before and after pics and will have to find out how to add to my posts before posting them. Thanks.
  2. I was worried about not losing quickly enough, but I started working out and walking and now it is coming off. I know that I am building muscle which will burn calories more rapidly, but it weighs more than fat. I decided that I would rather lose more slowly, and tone at the same time rather than lose really fast and have lots of loose skin to deal with. Besides, it keeps people from gawking and asking how I'm doing it so fast and if I had surgery. My friend has to deal with that every day!
  3. You will loose it! I am 6 months out and lost 100 pounds so far, even while being pregnant. Its totally possible. Keep it up! Sent from my iPhone using RNYTalk

What have your experiences been? Help!

This is my first blog on this forum after seeing a cardiologist today for heart palpitations. He said that because i am overweight my body is releasing adrenaline in apporopriatly. (something to do with hormones). Being that i also have PCOS, and a family history of heart problems and diabetes he reccomended that i look into bypass or banding surgery to loose weight since i have not had much sucess with dieting. I feel like i have been given a reality check. The time is now for me to loose this weight... So i have been scouring the internet all day for information, but nothing beats hearing peoples experiances first hand.... Lap band sounds like it might be a good choice for me, but i am praying that a proceedure like this would be covered by my insurance. It seems wherever i look that BCBS seems to cover in most cases people fall into a morbid obese range and i am there unfortunatly. So many questions and yet i feel i should have made this decison a year ago!
  5. Hello All I have recently come to the conclusion that I need to do something drastic to loose the wieght I have been loosing and regaining (more) all my life. I have done calorie counting, portion control, nutrasystem, metabolic research, jillian michaels biggest looser etc. Some work and I am able to loose some wieght but it always comes back with more. Right now I am at my heaviest 335lbs. I have been researching bariatric surgery and have decided the sleeve is right for me. I do not like the idea of re-routing my guts with the long term implications that brings. I also don't like the idea of having a appliance in my body that can cause problems in the future. I really like the safety and efficacy of the sleeve. I am lucky in that my insurance will pay for certain bariatric surgeries as long as it is done at the internationally renowned "Clinic" that I also work for. But it is not all good. See my post under insurance issues on that. All in all I am happy to find this board and look forward to learning more from everyone here. Thanks

    Submitted To Cigna Today!

Gah! I wish, I got bumped another week, so now its Dec 5. I almost had a meltdown when the office told me that...but now its just a week away. #Nerves! Our pre-op is very different, basically can have Protein and veggies up until 24 hrs before surgery, and then Clear liquids 24 hrs before, nothing after midnight night before... I just get worried that I am not loosing enough (only down about 4 lbs since starting preop diet). The doc never gave me a number to loose, just said follow the diet. :S I guess in that regards i'm much luckier than some others who have to do liquid only for 2 weeks! *sigh* just kinda want it to be here already so I can stop stressing sooo much about it.

    Compression Garments

I've been wearing a compression shirt and shorts off and on since surgery. I don't know that they have helped by themselves, but they have helped in conjunction with exercise. My only loose skin now is in the back of my upper arms and my belly area, but I expected both of those. IMO, they can't hurt and they make me look better in clothes, so I'll keep wearing mine. I do try to make sure my compression shorts aren't so tight they cut off circulation in my legs because I do a lot of driving and sitting for my job.

    Compression Garments

Any use any type of compression garments… have they helped with skin? I am thinking I will probably try some to my flabby arms and my belly after I get surgery but I just was wondering if anyone has ever used them.

    Any regrets about getting banded?

I love that I have my band in. Everyday gets better then the last. I have to say if I had to choose between the occasional discomfort and being obese, I would choose discomfort, not to mention the fact that as I have lost, the better most things have become. I do have constipation. I am trying some different natural ways to resolve the problem. Honestly, dieting causes constipation. So, you just have to work through it. But, I would say talk to your doctor, and just think about what is important to you. If changing your lifestyle, loosing weight, and being healthy are important, I would seriously pursue what you need to do in order to loose weight. GOOD LUCK!!! Let me know if you decide to pursue the lap-band. I am so beyond happy with my decision, I have lost 51 pounds!
  11. Yes, it's because the swelling is going down. Right now your band is loosely around your stomach causing little or no change.

    No Bowel Movement

Miralax will work. Give it time. Start using it every day for awhile. You can stop it if you start getting loose stools.

    I yr. soon

How much have you actually lost? What size band do you have and how much fill? Do you feel you are restricted enough? I know that Men do loose lots faster than women on any weightloss program. My husband has lost more weight than me since my banding and he isn't even banded. But, I know his metabolism is much higher and I'm in perimenopause and it's just a part of life. Post this other information and maybe some seaoned bandsters will weigh in. I've only had the band for 2 months and have lost 40 pounds and am dissapointed myself but I need my 3rd fill. I'm not restricted enough at this point. Hope you get some info that might help you. Good luck.

    So Annoyed

I lost 12 lbs the first week and weighed 220. Then I gained 3 back and held that weight for 2.5 weeks! My surgeon warned me that I would likely stall for a couple weeks while my body recovers from the shock of surgery. I'm now 4 weeks post op and losing again steadily. So yes, what you're going through is normal. Stay hydrated and get your protein in! I still lost a lot of inches while stalled, going from size 18 to a loose 16.

    Should Eating Hurt?

Unfortunately, no. Apparently I am very sensitive and anything over .5 filled At once and I swell up like crazy. But I couldn't even get down thick liquids like protein drinks and such. As soon ad they unfilled me and the swelling went down I was pretty loose again . But the next fill got me where I am now and I'm definately in the green zone! I just have top take it slow with fills and I'm okay with that. But think liquids and purees should never be a problem or hurt going down.

    A Regretful RNY Patient?

I am about 8 weeks post op and have about .75 ccs in my 10cc band, I have lost about 18lbs all together and have been stuck at 212.5 for about a week and a half. I go for a second fill in about a week. In regards to you saying that you have had the willpower to eat right and change thus far and hope that you will continue to have willpower after the newness wears off. I am loosing steam and my willpower is fading. I do eat less than before and I have always been aware of the right type of food so I try to make the best choices possible but it is starting to get hard and I am frustrated that I have not lost any more weight. I need to kick the exercising into gear and count my calories but at this point I feel like I am back to the old "start a diet, do well for 4-6 weeks, loose motivation, back to old habits" cycle. I can eat anything and quite a bit of it to full me up. We are also struggling a bit financially right now so my grocery budget is has room for milk, bread and diapers and thats about it so I am eating whatever I can scrape together to make for the family. Ugggggh, I need something to pick me up. Anyways, I just wanted to comment on your concern with the motivation dying out bc I definately have experienced that. Best Wishes.
  17. I'm suffering from several symptoms of PCOs: weight gain, hirsutism (increased hair growth on the face, arms and belly), irregular and often nonexistent menses, "spotting" and Patches of darker, velvety skin on the legs. I read that the surgery might solve it. Mine is due in less than 2 weeks (yay!). However I am still worried that my eating habits caused some permanent, irreversible damage to my body. For instance, ovarian cysts, which tend to evolve into tumors sometimes. If I lose weight and kiss the other PCOs symptoms goodbye, do the cysts disappear or do they stay for good? If you could tell from your own experiences, I'd love to hear.

    Corn/carrots/straws

We got some freshly picked corn at a farm stand. Last night I had half an ear for dinner, then half an ear for a snack later. Today I ate a whole ear and had a tummy ache. Ouch! (That would be my big, lower belly.) Of course, I have a mild allergy to corn, but it seems to affect me more now that I eat less. I've tried popcorn and the skins feel like they stick in my throat -- nowhere near my band. My throat is fairly sensitive. So I gave it up for fear of getting stuck or irritated. I'm still gonna eat corn!

    So far so good

Ya I’m down to 265 right now and according to surgeon am prob carrying 10 to 15 pounds of skin so in reality I’m about 250 ish so I’m thinking 15 more pounds of loss and I’ll be good. Best thing is I feel great now and should only get better so I really could live with where I’m at now and be fine.
  20. See how great you are! Helping so many of us and I for one appriciate it. You've got friends here. I think that will be the worst part for me... Thanks for sharing I did want to ask how your skin has recovered so far.

    Personal trainer?

I have signed up for a personal trainer I am 3 months post op an have lost 41 lbs. Am I starting this too early? Should I wait until I've lost some more? I already have some sagging skin and I want to try and tone those areas now so to hopefully eliminate too much sag! I have been working out consistently since surgery I am up to 6 days a week at least 30 mins a day all cardio and wanted to add a bit of variety an get strength and flexibility workouts in too!! Any suggestions or advise welcome!!!!
  22. you are reaching your first stall... you will have more stalls along your journey. I am 3 weeks post op and i am currently in a stall. I have not lost weight in almost a week and actually gained about a pound. It will run its course and will loose again.
  23. My insurance did not have a six month diet period; but due to a health issue I had to postpone my surgery. This meant that my first consult was 12/28/09 and my surgery is now scheduled for 8/12/10. My understanding is that the doctor's office sends in your original weigh in from your first consult. While I still would qualify today my insurance reapproved me (had to be done when my surgery was postponed) no problem even though I have lost 54 pounds since my first consult. As mentioned by a previous poster; many doctors want you to loose 5-10% of your body weight before they do the surgery. Sooooo as my doctor said this is all about the end game. The more you loose before the surgery hopefully the more you will lose in the end. While I am impatient and a horrible waiter you will be putting the six months into good use. Realistically how long will it take you to loose 10% of your body weight?
  24. Hi, i've been researching WLS for quite sometime. I attended a seminar on july 15. Initial consult was yesterday August 03; Psych. evaluation scheduled for tuesday August 10. Started Weight watchers on my own on July 17. Appointment with Nutritionist on Friday August 6. Anybody out there going through these stages? I need some friends for mutual support. My Insurance, Care first Blue Choice requires 6 months of medical weight management. Can my Insurance deny coverage if I loose too much weight during the six months? My Doctor said no but I just want a second opinion. I enjoy reading and talking to folks on this forum. I've learned a lot and found tons of inspiration here. Anyone interested in sharing the ups and downs of this journey? I know I won't be banded for another 5 to 6 months.:tongue2: I'm sooo impatient and afraid I could get discouraged along the way. Congatulations on your decision to live a healthier and happier life.

    Help! Fills Are Not Working!!!

What your eating and drinking is a huge question only you can answer.... GO BACK TO THE BASICS , start again and eat like you have just been banded. Also up your exercise amount ALOT MORE, you wanna loose you have to do cardio at least 20 mins a day MINIMUM. The fill shouldnt be the only thing that makes you loose the weight, everyone rely's way too much on the fill. I am a 4 cc band and have had 2 fills and I am full to the brim, I have to loose the weight mainly on exercise or eating habits, also I find that I think I'm hungry but really thirsty and this happens all the time. GOOD LUCK
