Losing hope...what now?
travelinsnorkel replied to travelinsnorkel's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
He said that he really anchored the port on tight this time and it might just be extra scarring from that. He did do the port revision for free. I am going to see what happens this week and if he can't find it, I'm going to get a second opinion even if I have to pay out of pocket AGAIN! -
Hi, my name is Ronda. I have been a bariatric patient for 10 years now. Initially, I had RNY done and lost 85 pounds with it. My maintenance was steady for about 5 years, but started declining--regained weight, bone loss, anemia, circulatory and cardiac problems. I have hypertension, but am severely allergic to those drugs for treatment. Weightloss and management is the only way I have of keeping my health in good shape. In 2007, I went to a new bariatric surgeon to seek an evaluation on my prognosis; he said revision surgery was needed to attend to severely stretched stoma. Insurance always held strong opposition to any treatment for my problems. This visit, Dr. tried 2 times to appeal the insurance for treatment--failed both times. Some time passed, and I had changed employment status and my healthcare needs were being covered on State Medicaid. This time, I learned that my bariatric treatment was covered under my Medicaid plan, but would need evaluations from the pulmonologist, cardiologist, psychologist, and dietician/nutritionist, in addition to following a dr-supervised weightloss plan with my pcp--I started all of this last September. It took solid 9 months of negotiating coverage and ultimate surgery that I had with my doctor on May 31st here in Phoenix. AZ. I am 3 weeks postop now. My loss is 23 pounds, and still mostly blender shakes and some pureed foods. I find that I don't really like what I ate preoperatively. Most of the foods taste too sweet--even if sugarfree. I had laparoscopic surgery so the healing is great--just unable to lift anything yet. I am driving, and doing most of my chores as long as I don't lift anything over 15 pounds. I walk the malls, and try to keep busy per dr's orders. Yet that is a challenge now that we have 110 or hotter days coming this summer. I still keep at it, tho. I know my surgery was a gift from God--in every sense of the word, as was the initial RNY procedure back in 2001. Both surgeries saved my life! Forever, will I be indebted to the Powers that Be.

A little worried
PatientEleventyBillion replied to msdr1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There's no way to know. The odds of needing a revision whether it be complications, reflux, etc. is fairly low, but it still does happen. Can't avoid the risks. Just do what you can to mitigate any complications that could be caused by yourself. I have moderate reflux (GERD) and am going with 3 surgeons' advice to get the VSG done, with a revision option a year down the road (I believe it would be more like 2 or 3 but we'll see) to RNY. I too worry about getting worse reflux and the staging of esophageal damage but generally people can also take PPI's to help mitigate this by default. -
Sounds like you are doing great. My band come out on Wednesday and revising to MGB.

New and 8 days from surgery
Kcarr1120 replied to lisalisalisa's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I hear ya! I am so afraid this won't work, or, if it does, I will gain it all back! Lets face it, if we had good eating habits, and were willing to change our lifestyle for goos, then we wouldn't be in this situation to begin with! I am a band to bypass revision and my surgery is the 19th. I lost 60 lb with my lapband prior to getting pregnant. I have since had two beautiful boys, and gained all that weight plus some back. I don't have to do a pre-op diet, so I find myself going back and forth in my head "go ahead and eat ice cream, a Big Mac, pizza - you will not have those things ever again", and "eat healthy now, practice the new rules you will have to follow, lose a few pounds before surgery." However, the former usually wins out, and I will probably end up gaining 5 more pounds!! I don't have any words of wisdom, but at least you know you are not alone!! -
I had a vsg in 2012 and initially lost 75lbs before finding out i was pregnant. Something about metabolism changing and birth control not being enough. I have gained all but 20lbs back. I am wanting to have revision surgery to bypass. Do you know of anyone who had a bypass but failed in the first year? Two years? I dont have to be skinny. I just want to be healthier.

Mental Anguish over Decision
Mayaresearchmom replied to Worrier No. 1's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm 52, and I've never had a band, but I did make the decision to have bypass after breaking my leg through the knee joint. I had considered bypass for several years, but it took the ortho doctor telling me that I needed a total knee because my weight caused the fracture repair to fail to get the ball rolling. One thing that he said that really stuck in my head was that for every pound you lose, that is FOUR pounds of pressure off the knee. I'm sure its about the same for the hip. Surgery was 6/10, and I'm down 18 pounds since surgery date, and a total of 29 pounds since 4/26 when I first visited my surgeon. (I was fast tracked because I was self pay) My surgeon does not even do the band anymore because of the number of revisions that she was requested to do in the past few years. I already had bad GERD, so I opted for bypass. I can honestly say this is the best thing I have ever done for myself. I had probably lost and regained the same 29 pounds on WW five or six times over the past 4 years. I'm looking forward to a healthier more active life. At times I think my weight loss should be more, but I am really limited as to walking because of the knee. I know that once I get my knee replacement in October that I will (hopefully) lose quicker. Hope my reply helped. Just consider where you are now, and how much better it could be. I don't think age should be a factor, its quality of life. I work in a doctors office, and I see our older patients who are active and able to do for themselves, even after hip or knee replacemnets, then I see our not so older patients who are barely able to get around after hip or knee replacements because of their weight issues. And I DO NOT want to be a part of the later group. -

Band removed 3 years ago, now thinking Sleeve?
MEL0129 posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Oh the lapband, the first year was great. I was mostly compliant and lost 65 lbs. Then, in one weekend, I thought I was going to die. Turns out I had a slippage with 2 little pouches. So I went in for a revision. I tried my best to hold onto that band. I didn't want to gain the weight back. You know the deal, vomiting all the time, but worst than that, trapped gas. So after another year of all that, it had to come out. Now, 3 yrs later, I'm heavier than ever at 343. In this year I have been down to 313 and back up to this weight. I can drop and gain the same 7/lbs over and over. Water weight. So now I want to thoroughly investigate the sleeve. My concerns are #1: excessive Scar tissue as that was to blame for band removal, #2 do you get trapped gas with sleeve, heck I still have it, and #3: I have Dercum's Disease. Does anyone else have Dercum's and WLS? So can some of you help me make a decision? I'm not doing good on my own. I have severe osteoarthritis and this weight is dragging me down. I thought I had done my investigating with the band but no, I didn't do enough. Really, mostly concerned about Scar tissue... Please give me your thoughts. -
Gastric Bypass Surgery Monday! Nervous
A_new_sara replied to Real California April's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
My surgery is Monday too.. I'm a revision from sleeve to bypass due to some complications I had from my vsg I in July. I'm scheduled for 7:30 Monday morning. Good luck to you! I hear the recoveries are similar so I can tell you that the first couple of days are kind of hard because you can't drink, and you're in pain from the gas pain in your chest so just take a hot pad and make sure you relax and use your pain medicine Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app -

Happynew posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am a self pay patient in new jersey, My insurance company does not cover weight me. I totally have a $13000 cash deposit I saved for this surgery. I found a new jersey surgeon has a $12000 sleeve package, but he does not offer any complications insurance for me to buy. I found a florida surgery he has a $13000 packet including blis complication cost coverage. But i need to pay hotel and flights for me and my companion. But if i really have leaking, infection, etc. How i could immediately fly to Florida for the revision? May I know how are your self pay guys prepare for the complications cost? -

Spouse helping
KWeilbrenner09 replied to HookerSpouse's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Not my spouse but I stayed with my mom for the two weeks after my surgery. What helped me was having all my "food" in one place on the counter and one shelf in the fridge. She also would go on my walks with me and that was super nice. Also, helping to remind your wife to eat and drink on schedule. It isn't easy but the reminders are nice. I needed help getting up and out of bed for the first week as well as taking showers and going to the bathroom. Lastly, because I went to bed so much earlier, I was sleeping 12-14 hours per night post surgery, mom would tuck me into bed. It just felt nice to be cared for. After the first week, I was much more independent! Hope this helps! Katy W- Louisburg, NC Lapband revision to VSG with DS HW- 297 Weight at Surgery-279 CW- will update at two week appt -

Swampdoggie replied to _Kate_'s topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
@ hi Kate, welcome! I've actually been on this site since 2007 but only active since December 2014. I really enjoy it, have gotten a lot of great ideas and counsel, some laughs and I feel a lot of affect tion for a goodly number of the folks who participate. The exchanges bring home to me how human we all are, with our struggles and joys, our sames and differents. I rarely go a day without checking in. I'm 50, married forever with a 28 yo and a 16 yo. From the Midwest cornfields but live near wash DC now. Had a band, revised to sleeve in January and LOVE it. I love to camp and travel. Have been to 16 countries and 48 states (missing Mississippi and new Hampshire oddly). That's about the size of it. :-D -
Upper GI tomorrow
Tomo replied to David in Washington's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a barium swallow every year after my sleeve to check if it was stretched. I guess I was paranoid lol. Now after the revision, I haven't done that. But it is fast, you drink chalky stuff, they watch it go down. I always asked for a picture to compare year to year. No sedation, can Uber that no problem but ... For the surgery, not allowed to do Uber, at least here I couldn't. -

emk101009 posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi all. So I had my revision 4 days ago. A 45 -50 pound weight loss would be perfect but I am terrified of regain. I am so afraid I'll gain again. Is anyone out years from surgery and maintaining?? -
I don't have BCBS, but most insurance companies usually require at least a 40 BMI and at least one co-morbidity confirmed, like diabetes, sleep apnea, or high blood pressure. Maybe some might do a 35 BMI? But I do know that a family history isn't enough. I'm actually looking at getting a revision so I have the joy of going through it again.

I'm one month and two days band to sleeve revision and down 37 pounds. I feel great! Here is my dilemma...... I CANNOT get motivated to get my arse to the gym. I joined PF which is a real nice, clean facility but I can't seem to get there. I know exercising is critical and will enhance my weight loss as well as build muscle. I just can't get into it. Can someone share with me how I can get motivated. I have a bad back but that's not my excuse.. I'm just too damn lazy. Thanks for your input and appreciate the help! Eric
