I have BS of CA PPO and also got the gastric sleeve. If you have a bmi of 40+, then you qualify. If you have a bmi of 35 with at least one comorbidity, then you will qualify too. They require a psychological evaluation, nutritional support, proof that you have attempted to lose weight in the past, particularly within the past 3 - 6 months (primary doctor can provide that information - pretty much just showing weight loss and weight gain again). I also had to do multiple tests, but that was due to my surgeon's requirements, not insurance. My surgeon's office told me that Blue Shield of CA is one of the easier insurances to work with. They don't make you have to jump through as many hoops as other insurances. Once my paperwork was submitted along with all my requirement documentation, I got approved in less than a week. Here is a link to a pdf on Blue Shield of California's website. It shows the requirements for weight loss surgery, to help give a more thorough idea. https://www.blueshieldca.com/bsca/bsc/public/common/PortalComponents/provider/StreamDocumentServlet?fileName=PRV_PA_Bariatric_Surgery.pdf

One week post-op — feeling hunger
Jaye W replied to imhenryxvi's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You have to learn to fill up on fluids, distract yourself and don’t eat every time you are “hungry”. Your previous statement about not being able to achieve what you plan if your body is crying out to be fed is already setting yourself up for failure. Take it one meal at a time, one day at a time. You can do this! -
Insurance paid for my vsg and pre- op clearances. I had to pay my deductible then everything was covered at 100%. If you have insurance through an employer, It will depend on the specific policy inclusions/exclusions that are chosen by your employer more so than the insurance carrier that you have. For instance all Aetna, bc/bs, tied healthcare etc policies are not the same regarding coverage.

Hey, perfect timing on your post bc it let me know I'm not alone. I didn't want to say anything, bc I'm grateful for losing what I have, and didn't want to be a jerk complaining when others have worse struggles than me. I've been stuck for about 6 days now, and actually went up 2 pounds two days ago, then back down to where I was 6 days ago today. I'm in that calorie range you are in, but my CNP told me something opposite what my nutritionist told me: Go protein focused. Whether that mean 5-6 small meals, or 3 meals, only focus on your protein goal of 75-90g per day, and when you achieve it, stop eating. I'm also getting my 64oz water and all my supplements, so I'm not sure what to do except up the excercise (mostly cardio still.) I really hope you break through your plateau, and start losing again. I'll cheer for you, and when you do it, maybe you can give me a tip or two! 😁

Weirdest None-Scale-Victory - I'll go first

So, when I rest my elbow on something it hurts bc there's no cushion left. When I lie in bed my ankles and knees hurt because the bones knock together. No complaints here though! -
One week post-op — feeling hunger
imhenryxvi replied to imhenryxvi's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
That’s distressing. I’m prepared emotionally/physically to limit my intake to 500 Kcal/day, but I won’t be able to achieve that if my body is crying out to be fed. The lack of hunger benefit is just as important to me as the smaller stomach. -
hi everyone... has anyone notice a change in urine color and smell after surgery?????? i have been drinking only water, eat a well balance meal, the little i can eat. it started the day i had my ESG done. i thought it was dehydration but i wasn't bc they gave me 3 iv bags that day and I've been keeping up with my fluid intake. also dont have uti.. i did read somewhere online that it could be the anesthesia still in my system..

Kaiser and skin removal/plastic surgery answers
krysnik23 posted a topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
I read a couple of posts from people who were told by Kaiser that skin removal and other post bariatric plastics are not part of their plan. I don't want anyone to suffer for years as I did because of being told the wrong information! I'm learning to push back when told NO since often times the people on the other end of the phone tend to not have all the answers or are told to derail people with questions from learning the real truth in order to save $ Anyway, there was a class action in 2015 against Kaiser sparked by post WLS denials. And as it turns out this can have repercussions for insurance that systematically deems skin removal as an elective surgery that isn't covered in cases of extreme weight loss. Link https://blog.cvn.com/kaiser-ordered-to-broaden-reconstructive-surgery-coverage-after-class-action-trial https://legalnewsline.com/stories/510629463-calif-judge-rules-that-insurer-at-center-of-class-action-over-skin-removal-surgeries-must-broaden-coverage When I went to be evaluated for plastic surgery in 2017, we were told we could have one procedure. Dr said I didn't qualify for a panni because it didn't quite hang low enough, just to clarify...their measurement is 'abdominal skin must cover pubic region entirely'' which is BS with the years of skin rashes I have had. He said I just barely qualified for breast reduction surgery which I had 5 months later, the waiting list was long. He said I would be a C cup (from a DD) and I wasn't happy when I ended up a B but worse things could happen. I'm 16 years Post Gastric BP and should've had a revision 4-5 years ago when weight gain started creeping up, no longer going down... about 15 lbs a year since 2018. I could never break past 170 to reach goal of 155 but I'm goin to pursue the distal revision as of this week. It's now or never, I have to get a social life! The rule is you have to be at your goal and stable for months before a skin removal surgery will be covered by insurance so I'll have to wait longer even longer for that as consequence of procrastinating on a revision! I've been disabled with an autoimmune illness so I never returned to the job I enjoyed after the WLS. I didn't put much effort into pursuing solutions for skin removal after research showed it would be very costly out of pocket expense and not covered by insurance. So I haven't really felt the freedom of losing 140 lbs because I still cover up my body! No swimsuits, no sleeveless anything or clothing that accentuates the possibility of a waist, LOL. I wish I had the confidence of those who wear what they want, no matter their size! I've wanted to leave Kaiser to return the awesome Dr I previously had who actually listened and treated me like a human being. Staying with Kaiser only until these surgeries are done and I'm out of there! Kaiser ruling.pdf -
Sent one of my doctors a snippy note

I'd find a new doctor. No one should have to put up with this BS. -
Hi I’m from NY, but no where near you lol. I’m out near Buffalo. I am almost 3 months post op from the sleeve. Best decision ever! I go out to eat on occasion. I usually just check the menu before I go and then order whatever I feel is safest. I sometimes just order and appetizer. You really can’t fit much. For example I often order a salad with chicken on it but ask for a dinner salad instead of the big salads bc you can literally only fit about 6 bites. I have so much more confidence and in general just feel so good! Hope you have an amazing experience!

The cravings usually stay with us we just learn how to recognise & better manage them or they’re not as strong. I think cutting a lot of the foods that fed cravings out of our diets pre & post surgery helps educate us & re sensitise our tastebuds to what may really be too sweet.

Thanks guys just come home from being discharged feom hospital as I needed IV fluids, IV Vitamin B, and being heavily constipated didnt help. I have been taking 60g protein each day woth milk 3 times a day. But I gues I was only really managing 600 mls flui a day. I bought Huel High Protein which i got fed up off. And tried to make salmon broccoli soup and obviously was too early to blend and try some so i vomited n hence constipation and dehydration on top of that. -
July 2021 Surgery People!
Kimchibar replied to Sammys_VSG_Evolution's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
collagen peptide unflavored powder helps with nails, skin, and hair (hair loss is a huge issue with WLS patients) so many people take it to reduce hair loss. It also has 10g of protein! you can mix it into your protein shakes as it's flavorless! I recommend it! https://www.amazon.com/Collagen-Peptides-Grass-Fed-Certified-Friendly/dp/B00XQ2XGAA I use this one with my coffee, shakes, etc. -
Husband refuses to drop me off or pick me up from the hospital. Now what?
eholmes89 replied to DoodlesMom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
ahh that sucks 😔 I don’t think I could have coped without my boyfriends support throughout the whole thing! I know he’s fed up of listening to ‘how much protein I’ve eaten today’ ‘look at my scars’ ‘ I’ve got no energy to do anything’ .. but true love supports one another. also the ‘easy way out’ comment infuriates me, my family said the same thing, until they realised actually what I went through, this is not an easy option, your physically changing your body and having surgery which has complication in its self. I’m sure if we could have all done it by dieting and exercise we wouldn’t be here right?! I hope you find a friend, or family member to support your journey. You also have all Of us here as well.. anytime. xx -

Negative reactions to getting plastics.
Kris77 replied to HealthyLifeStyle's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
I did have the muscle tightening too. I didn’t say it didn’t hurt. It did. Was it excruciating the entire time. No. The first few days were the most painful. After that the pain was manageable w Tylenol for me. I slept in a recliner bc I had drains, couldn’t put body straight, and I also have breast lift and augmentation so sleeping in a recliner was the only way I could sleep. Like sneezing or coughing was very painful bc of the muscle tightening. For me even w the pain it was all worth it. I’m 8 mos out now. I wasn’t trying to minimize it. It is painful but for me after a few days or so I was able to take mostly Tylenol for pain. Other things hurt me after a little while like my back from being hunched over all the time. -
Dr and hospital recommendations

I “like” eating junk too. I have a party sized bag of peanut m&ms just sitting here. Over the course of a day I’ll probably have a handful. In the past I could mow through that whole bag in a day (yeah I know). My wife is concerned every time the scale drops a pound now and though I feel like I probably have another 15-20lbs I could lose she (and my mom uhg) are worried I’m too skinny (I’m not, 192 @ 6’4” is at the top of the healthy BMI range (BMI is garbage but I agree with it in this circumstance just by looking at me (I need to chill with parentheticals))) so they are keeping me fed… but you’re right, it’s very very empowering to look at a sleeve of Oreos and have two (gotta take off one cookie top each and smoosh two double stuffs together for a quad stuff…. I’m not Amish) and be happy with that.

5 Year Bariatric Failure - Please educate me on the basics
AmiLou replied to AmiLou's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
GeTNbackup, I wish I knew what was going on with my legs. It existed prior to the surgery so I was treated for restless legs with increasing doses of medication that never helped. Pain was primary at night. My thoughts were that perhaps it was the excess weight so the doctor approved the weight loss surgery which I paid for out of pocket. The surgery didn't help the pain either. I quit taking the restless medications. Later they did ultrasounds and found an old blood clot in my leg and some plaque. I am on Xalrelto and they have seem some improvement in the size of the clot. However, there is NO improvement in the pain and I now suffer during the day. I don't think the clot is the source of the pain. I am seeing a cardiologist and next step is a vascular doctor. I really don't trust doctors. They sent me to that hematologist and I noticed that he billed an enormous amount of money and also had indicated "COVID" related on the bill. I had COVID in December and this was July!!! I retired in June so most of this is out of pocket now. Without sounding too political, I call BS! My husband thinks I complain too much and I probably do. I am in pain in more ways than one. -

Mr. went on pizza making mode and fed our little party with a whole lotta pizzas! Each one was different and would be too much to list out the different toppings here (plus, i’m lazy!), but i will say that i had a bite of 6 of the 8 pizzas (i skipped the plain margarita one and the one with olives) and my fave was the one with the truffle bechamel base, crispy prosciutto, and grilled pineapple. They didn’t want to top any of the pizzas with some spicy anchovies before it went in the pizza oven, so i just added some afterwards. Still worked, yum! My six bites was probably equivalent to 1 slice of pizza in total, and with all the different toppings, i just estimated 220 calories in MFP. 🤷🏻♀️ -
9 Days post-DS Surgery problems with Protein Shakes
SarahMan80 replied to Randall Morgan's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
That is exactly how I felt. The Premier Protein shakes (all flavors) made me feel horrible and therefore I was unable to ingest them easily. I found that clear protein drinks were what worked for me. Especially Isopure powder (berry and tropical flavors). They have it on Amazon, I suggest getting a shaker bottle too if you don’t already have one. I also use an unflavored protein powder to mix in with my food and morning decaf coffee. I can get ‘Orgain Grass Fed Hydrolyzed Collagen Peptides Protein Powder’ at my local grocery (HEB) and Amazon. Good luck and I hope you get back to your protein goals!
