Looking for Inspiring Stories - Gastric Bypass Journeys!
Justarwaxx posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi everyone, I’m 3.5 months post-op from gastric bypass surgery (done on 14th August 2024), and I’ve lost 20 kg so far. Honestly, it still feels surreal to me – like I can’t believe this is actually happening! Sometimes, I doubt it’s even possible to lose more and maintain it long-term. That’s why I’m here, looking for your stories – both the successes and the challenges. How much weight did you lose after gastric bypass, and over what period of time? Have you managed to maintain your weight loss, and for how long? What were the biggest lessons or hurdles you faced during your journey? I want to hear it all – the good, the bad, and everything in between. Your experiences mean so much to me and to others who might feel like the road ahead is uncertain. Let’s celebrate the wins and learn from the challenges together! ❤️ Looking forward to reading your stories. -
Loosing teeth after gastric bypass and the easy way out?
Erin18 posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hi guys, So lately I've been seeing posts on tik tok and comments on there about people losing their teeth sometime after gastric bypass. That scares me a bit, but not stopping me from getting the tool. They all say they take their vitamins everyday. What could be causing them to lose their teeth? Is there something I can do to help prevent that? The other question is that I know this isn't the easy way out, it's just that everyone else who isn't in our situation always says it is the easy way out and they will argue and argue with you about it saying that it is. It's so annoying, they don't understand that its just like losing weight normally except you just have a tool to help keep you on track and if you mess up, you pay for it. That's like basically the only difference. Why do you think people are so against it? Besides the fact that it's super scary. If people wanted the surgery, it's because they need the help. Plus going in for weigh ins, nutritionist and all that, helps keep you motivated. People are weird. -
Anyone here had a Mini Bypass reversal? I'd really like to get some feedback please..

As I am just a few days away from surgery I've come across many stories of revision procedures. For those who have had to do this or know someone who has... I'm curious what some of the reasons were ?

I had a lap band placed in 2013 and ended up having it removed here in January. It up getting infected. Thankfully no erosion and just some scar tissue. The surgery to remove it was miserable for me tbh but at that time i started the process to revising from band to bypass. Thankfully that went through without a hitch and I had surgery on the 2nd of October. Initially with the band I lost over 100 lbs very quickly and felt so good. Went from 305 down to around 200. About a year after the band was placed I got my gallbladder out and I feel like that is when things kind of took a turn for me. I ended up having issues with the band so I just removed all the fluid after a year or so and just coasted through life with the thing. Things still getting stuck with it empty. Ended up gaining all my weight back and then some. Anyway, I just got the bypass on the 2nd and I am just overwhelmed with fear of not losing enough with the bypass as well as regain. Wondering if anyone has had similar experiences? On the pre op diet I lost 15 lbs and I have lost about 17 since surgery. I am almost 3 weeks. I read about people losing 30-40 right away. I worry im not on track even though I feel as if im doing well. I dont have any pain, my energy is good, i havnt puked at all since surgery (still on full liquids) and overall things seem to be doing well. I do need to up my protein (60-70 grams a day) but am able to get my fluids in. Time will tell I guess but would love to hear about others experiences. Thanks Brittany

Why did you prefer Gastric Sleeve over Gastric Bypass?

If it is not only since your surgeon prefers doing the Sleeve - Why did you have Gastric Sleeve over Gastric Bypass? -
I have what my surgeon called a mini bypass. Or a sleeve revision with single anastomosis. I had a sleeve in 2021 and bypass in 2024

Sleeve revision to SASI in January 2024
teedsg posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hey all! I had the sleeve in 2017 and never got to my goal weight and I had GERD. So fast forward to 2024 and had my sasi. All is well except now I can’t keep any food down. I’m having diarrhea several times a day for the past month. Any one else had issues like this? Oh and then I found out I have fatty liver. 😫🤷🏽♀️😵💫 scared! Smh -
GERD can be a possible side-effect of sleeve surgery, but not bypass. Medications like omeprazole work for some people, but severe GERD can lead to revision surgery. Typically these patients are converted to gastric bypass to relieve their issues. There are a few people here that have been through this, so hopefully they'll chime in.

Revision, are things going as they should?
Chelle Parris replied to Kak7365's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Just had revision to bypass due to stalling for a year and losing 8.5st but still not near target so wanted the bypass to finish my journey, lost 23lb so far and had the bypass 3 weeks ago, no hunger and can get all fluids in with no problem at all -
I had my gastric bypass in June of 2020. It was a revision from a sleeve due to GERD. I did really good after surgery as I went from 260 to 220 and than As of the past week I have went from 214 to 202lbs in a week. I have been soooo sick, throwing up everything I eat, I’m crazy restless and my chest feels tight. I feel like something might be wrong but I was in the hospital overnight and they couldn’t find anything other than some levels that were low but I’m still really sick, to be honest it is about as bad as when I first had my bypass. I would love to hear if anyone else has had this after 4 years or if you have any advice on how to get food and nutrients in me. I am getting kinda scared and desperate.

Should I Consider A Revision?
GataAnime posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi, I just had a four year surgiversary yesterday. In the first two years I made it down to 185-187 from 252. I did the calculations, and that was only about 25%-26% of my body weight lost. Doing the research, I've found that anything less than a 50% weight loss in the first two is generally considered failure. I maintained around 185-190 for over a year, and then gained 20 pounds seemingly overnight without changing much--we all have our lapses, but this was not enough to explain a 20-pound weight gain. Also, I am approaching The Change, so maybe this is part of that. All I know is I'm frustrated, and I'm not even sure that my initial surgery was successful. I guess I'm asking what other members of The Order Of The Sleeve who got sleeved at late 40s-early 50s have experienced. I plan to talk to my PCP, but what do you think? Should I consider revision based on the initial results? Would it even be worth doing at this point? -
Help me decide if I should revise from band to sleeve
JustDoIt130 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi everyone! I have not been on these forums for sooooo long- and it was the band forums...anyways. I had my band placed in January 2012. All was well, I lost some weight- then I didn't. Had a hernia repair and band refill, but have been so off track for so long. I definitely learned to eat around my band. And now I have a constant lump in my throat that my doc things is ghost reflux- I don't feel any burning like typical heartburn, but have this lump in my throat- especially at night when I'm trying to sleep. And I wonder if it's from the band. I still have restriction, I still can get stuck but I eat around the band, etc. I have been doing better and have lost 25 lbs and I know that no WLS is magic. I just wonder if revising from a band to sleeve would get rid of the reflux, and I also worry about the foreign band in my body...idk, what do y'all think? I would have to be self pay this time, as I'm 99.999% sure my insurance won't cover it. But it would be worth it, and maybe jumpstart my health journey again....... -
Are You Happy That You Had Surgery?
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to Beks18's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I am...now. I had a sleeve in 2022 and had SO many complications and I was miserable. I had a revision to bypass in 2023 and honestly, it's been amazing. I 100% love that I had the revision. I recommend the bypass to everyone. It literally solved all my issues. And I'm so thankful that I got my life back. I take meds for severe anxiety, for MS, and for lupus. The only real issue with meds are extended release with the bypass. But if you can find a way around that then you'll be fine. -
Distal gastric bypass revision experiences wanted
Sunniblue20 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi all, I am considering doing my revision through A university medical program and the revision the do for rny gastric bypass is a distal gastric bypass where they bypass even more of the intestine. I was wondering if anyone had any experiences with this good and bad and wouldn’t mind sharing. Thanks. -
Hi, all. I'm new here, but I'm scheduled for an endoscopic gastric bypass revision for early May. Looking forward to hearing from others who have had the procedure. My RNY was in 2001 surgery weight 465, bottom weight 290. I have slowly regained almost half of that amount back over the past 23 years. I never really felt that the pouch or the anastomosis were made small enough. I was one of the very first RNY patients in our area and the technique was in its infancy at that time.

I had a bypass over 15 years ago and at first it was successful over 10 stone loss and I felt amazing. My mobility has decreased dramatically nd I've been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, I've gained all my weight back and more. My pouch im sure is huge, I get terrible reflux and I'm thinking a revision. Has anyone successfully had a NHS revision? What was criteria? What did the op entail? Also, anyone gone private for this in uk? What was the cost? Im so confused but I know to help my mobility I need to lose weight 😩 Any help is appreciated

Need to decide which surgery to go with
SpartanMaker replied to cjpom's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I also take prescription NSAIDS due to significant back issues, so I initially thought I could not go with bypass. However due to the risk of GERD (symptomatic and verified by endoscopy), my doctor did not recommend sleeve. The resolution was to go ahead with the bypass. With my doctor's blessing, I have continued to take the NSAIDS and have been successful because she also prescribed a Proton Pump Inhibitor for me. If you have any history of GERD, it would be best to at the very least have an endoscopy done to make sure you are still a good candidate for the sleeve. I don't know what the overall revision statistics are, but there sure are a lot of folks on here that initially had sleeve and had to get a revision to bypass. Some of those were due to poor results, but a lot seem to have been due to GERD. -
Revision, are things going as they should?
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to Kak7365's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had a sleeve in 2022 and had a revision to bypass in 2023 due to complications. I had little to no pain, I was up and moving around with ease, I've really had a great experience. And I've lost quite a bit of weight with the revision, even though that wasn't why I got the surgery to begin with. I have ZERO regrets. -
Delaware (revision surgery)
CrazyDog&CatLady posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hi everyone...I was poking around but I couldn't find any recent discussions that were centered around my location in Delaware (I'm in Newark). I'm looking for forum support, in-person or online support groups, any kind of support TBH. 🤣 -
I had gastric Bypass in 2019. I have gained about 13 pounds back, but pretty happy overall. Last year when I was laying flat on the floor and went to sit up I felt the oddest sensation. It was a pain and pressure along with a knotty feeling protrusion that popped out in my stomach right below by right ribs. I was able to push it back in. I saw my gastric surgeon, who couldn't feel anything but sent me for a CT. The CT showed nothing. However, this protrusion has happened many times since. I even had my husband feel it last time to ensure I am not going crazy. Has anyone else had anything similar? What are your symptoms and what has been done for you? Any advice? Thanks! Lynda

Wegovy not working
audaciousmarie replied to wendywitch7's topic in GLP-1 & Other Weight Loss Medications (NEW!)
Thank you so much for your response. It’s perfect timing that I saw this as I just left the Bariatric surgeon’s office. My experience with GLP-1s was quite discouraging. I was just about ready to give up trying to lose the weight I regained. However, my appointment with the Bariatric surgeon was quite encouraging. He agrees that I qualify for a revision surgery. He laid out the revision surgery options: Bypass, SADI-S or SIPS. Apparently the final revision surgery method will be determined during the surgery when he is able to assess my intestine length for the bypass/malabsorption effect. So for now, I’m going to focus on completing the program steps (Barium swallow, Psych appointment, Nutrition appt, support group, etc) so they can submit the PA for revision surgery. So I’m going to focus on completing the insurance requirements -
Having second thoughts
SpartanMaker replied to monikapaintsstuff's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wanted to address the GERD fears as well. Overall, I think the number of people that develop GERD after gastric sleeve is pretty low. That said, I personally am a bit concerned when you say your surgeon "pushes the sleeve". Any doctor that pushes one surgery over another is a bit of a red flag to me? I personally would want them to advise on what they think is best for ME, not what's best for them. My surgeon felt like I was pretty likely to develop GERD if I did go with sleeve, so they advised against it due to what they saw on the endo. FWIW, I didn't even have a history of GERD. It might have helped that I went into the process with an open mind and not fixated on a specific surgery? Lots of people are successful with sleeve surgery even if they have a history of GERD, but this was one I wasn't willing to risk personally. Knowing that bypass is often the revision surgery of choice for sleevers that do develop severe GERD, it made sense to me to avoid all that and go straight to bypass. -
Why did you prefer Gastric Sleeve over Gastric Bypass?
GreenTealael replied to HopeBar's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I chose sleeve over bypass because at the time it was considered a safer profile surgery with the same effectiveness. I had other medical conditions I needed to focus on and could not risk dealing with complications. It still makes sense to that past nervous version of me. However this version of me (which needed to be revised from sleeve to bypass from complications from sleeve 🤣) would choose differently. All things considered, All things being equal and if I had to choose again I would pick bypass over sleeve (especially if I was a self pay patient or my insurance excluded revisions).
