  1. As a former Lap Band patient I understand exactly what you're trying to explain. It could be esophageal dysmotility. My band was always tighter in the morning and during that time of month. I had a Mirena placed, and that helped a lot. Are you considering band removal and revision surgery?

Did you have the sleeve or the bypass? Do you know your fasting insulin versus before / after for your IR? Sent from my Pixel 6 using BariatricPal mobile app
  5. Hello all! I didn’t see a May thread started yet for bypass. I’m scheduled for RNY May 24, 2022.

    Kept it Quiet?

Hi! I am new to this forum, and have been working on all my pre-op stuff in order for surgery in June. I was wondering if anyone decided not to tell anyone about bypass surgery except their significant other (who supports my choice 100%). I just don't know if my family would be as supportive. I feel like they would think that surgery was the "easy way" etc. I am not sure I want that negativity. I am asking if the support of 1 or 2 people is enough to keep you motivated or if I should just tell my family.

    May 2022 surgery?

Gastric bypass is set for May 16th. Hopefully that won’t get delayed. I’ve been having some stomach issues, and my primary doctor is wary about approving me for surgery until we find out what’s going on. I can’t wait!
  8. Revision is tomorrow! Super excited and nervous. Good luck to everyone who is getting surgery this week!
  9. Well everyone is different so I can only talk about my own experience. I got sleeved in Dec 2016 and lost about 120 lbs in about 6 months. I had GERD before sleeve and still had it after, felt about the same. I took PPI once every morning. I slowly began to regain for various reasons, until I was almost back to where I started. I got revision to bypass this past November and am down over 75 lbs so far. Also my GERD is gone. My only regrets are not following the program in the first place, and not getting the revision sooner.

    May 2022 surgery?

Finally getting my revision from the band to the sleeve on may 16th and I’m so excited to get back in the saddle!!!
  11. The weight loss for revision varies a lot, but in general is significantly less than with your initial surgery. If you're doing it for GERD, it makes sense, but for weight loss, it makes more sense to look at other weight loss strategies like medications and counting calories/behavior change

Can I ask if insurance covers the revision?
  13. Almost 8 yrs VSG and had severe GERD beforehand. It significantly decreased post op but I've remained on PPI medication the entire time. I was down to 1-2 total doses per week, however I had some regain over the last year and am up to THREE TIMES daily!! It's everything to do with how I carry my weight- all in my middle. While I was quite satisfied with the GERD being almost totally resolved initially, I'm fearful that even IF I lose the current regain it won't go away to the extend that it was in the past. I have been told by my bariatric team that a revision is likely the ONLY way to get the GERD to go away with 100% certainty. That sounds pretty good to me but I am quite fearful of surgery in general because I'm a nurse practitioner and we make terrible patients... I would love to know what the loss pattern was like for those who had the revision and can I plan to see awesome results? I mean, BESIDES the GERD clearing up? I am currently about 40 lbs about my ULTIMATE goal- I never reached that goal with my VSG, stopping about 12 lbs away from it...

Anyone in here from Omaha, NE????

ETA: I just noticed that this is in the bypass forum. It came up in my Omaha search results and I posted before noticing. New here. I’m having vsg with Dr McBride at UNMC on April 6.

    Vyvanse after surgery

VSG typically does not cause malabsorption because the pyloric valve is left intact and not bypassed (such as with RNY/MGB/DS). So it generally does not interfere with meds. That being said, you should absolutely check with your prescribing doctor and your surgeon to be sure. Additionally, as you lose weight, you may need to have your dose adjusted. Hope that helps!

    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hello everyone, This is my first post. My gastric bypass surgery is 4/5/22. It is great to have such a supportive community on this site. I have really appreciated reading everyone's posts. So, thanks to everyone for their words of wisdom!
  18. Hi, I am 13 days PO gastric bypass. For the first 12 days I could barely drink a little more than an oz in 15 mins. This morning for breakfast I was able to drink 11oz in 30 mins and not feel full. For lunch, I just had some soup and I was able to eat 9oz in 30 mins. I don’t feel “stuffed” but I am having heart palpations. Has anyone experienced this? is this normal ?
  19. I received gastric sleeve surgery back in 2014. After finding out that I have another hernia and bad acid reflux and some weight gain I was informed to look into the bypass. I just received my approval for a June surgery date and I’m terrified. Has anyone else gone through something similar if so do you have any advice?
  20. Under the premise that the most important component of your car is the nut holding the steering wheel, I don't have a real preference; it's a tool and the most important part is still what's between the surgeon's ears. The doc who adopted our local support group, one who is well regarded for doing complex revisions, has mentioned that he has no real preference to them - he uses them if the hospital he is at has it and it is available, but he isn't specifically scheduling himself around it. My real concern is would the robot help a surgeon who is low on the learning curve, say on doing sleeves, be less likely to make a sleeve with a stricture? Or if the surgeon is one who is apprehensive about working around a fatty liver be less likely to close up and send the patient home without completing the job?
  21. I just had a revision from vsg to rny because of gerd. I didn't get gerd until quite a few years after my vsg. I believe most don't get gerd until a few years later or longer. Also, towards the end, no medication worked hence I had to undergo a revision. Before that, I was switched to every kind of ppi, H2 blocker, anti acids available. Nothing we worked anymore. It got so bad that I was sleep deprived, and it was effecting my work, and I had constant burning in my esophagus. I was warned that if I didn't fix it, I was putting myself in danger for esophageal cancer. I am not trying to add fear about the vsg. It is a wonderful procedure but some of us, unfortunately, experienced the worst side effect of the vsg, and that is severe gerd and esophagitis. According to studies approximately 35% get it and I fell into that category. There are many on this site who have had no issues with the sleeve after 7+ years. Now thinking if canceling surgery 🥺

Actually being seeing a couple of surgeons reporting only 10% incidence of GERD after sleeve lately. I always thought it was around that 30/35% mark too. Maybe something has changed in the surgical techniques they use??? Or they are more vigilant of recommending bypass to those who are more likely to develop GERD with a sleeve???

    Any April 2021 surgeries?!

I’m scheduled 4/14 for revision from sleeve to bypass. Much more nervous about this surgery than sleeve I had in 2013.

    Regrets...anyone?

I'm post op Lap Band removal, but pre op for Gastric Bypass. I suppose I regret not having it removed sooner instead of living with GERD for several years. I mean I lost a lot of weight with its help, but I regret not making a better choice when I chose Lap Band. I was trying to go the less invasive route, but it never led me down a path that allowed me to lose all of the weight I wanted to, then GERD happened. I never thought I was a candidate for Gastric Bypass due to certain health issues. But then GERD forced my hand to consider it, and well... here I am pre op for RNY, so I sort of feel the same way Pollito does, I wish I would've made a change sooner rather than wait. Life may have been different for me for the last ten or so years.

    Regrets...anyone?

I don't regret getting the lap band twenty years ago. I weighed 315 lbs. & wanted to get down to about 150 lbs. I got down to around 190 & I felt great! I've had issues with the band & had to have all the saline removed & regained some of the weight so I'm back up to 240. In some ways, I wish I had gotten a gastric bypass but I wasn't ready. I had kids & wasn't comfortable with getting such a radical surgery when they were so young. I made the best decision at the time. Most doctors don't do the band anymore but it has helped me a lot even if I'm having some trouble with it now. Sent from my Pixel 4a using BariatricPal mobile app
