  1. I agree with Lady Lisa, it may be too much acid? I had a few occasions of the stuck feeling, but usually only right after eating (usually too fast) and it would go away within a few hours. I've heard some people drinking pineapple or papaya juice because the enzymes can break down other food (they are known meat tenderizers). You could also try something warm like a nice decaf green or herbal tea? If it doesn't go away, I'd call your doctor to be safe. Just so you know, the beginning of solids is tough. It's great you know to chew well, but it may be a few weeks before solids are your friend. I kept things like yogurt, cottage cheese, and Soups on the menu for a while as I built up to the chicken, pork, turkey, seafood, etc. Good luck!

    Fell off the wagon...

I would like to introduce you to my two new best friends...Frozen Wild Bluberries and Frozen Sunburst mangos. These two things are great when you have that "head hunger". It is really hard to get out of the habit of eating while doing mindless activities (like watching your fav tv show). So I will put my 1 cup serving of frozen fruit into a bowl (the mangos I have plain, the blueberries with 1/2 cup of vanilla fat free yogurt) and watch my show and munch away. The mangos are like having a little treat. They are like a little fruity sorbet. You can't eat them fast because they are so cold and they are conveniently cut into bite size pieces. My nutritionist recommended them for those time when you really want to eat something, but don't think it's stomach hunger, or for when you are really hungry and need to tide yourself over until meal time (like afternoon or late evening snack). I've founds them to be extrememly convenient as well as satisfying. I absolutely HATE yogurt, but putting the blueberries in is great. They are naturally sweet and as they thaw they give off quite a bit of juice which makes the yogurt really sweet and not tasting like yogurt at all. This is a bonus for my fellow yogurt haters.
  3. I hate yogurt and it taste like sour ass mush......... I never did eat it on my pre op because of this an dI still don't like it. I was so tired of protein shakes and powerade zero at 4 weeks that I just couldn't go on with them. Now I'm able to tolerate and like drinking 1 protein shake a day when I do drink them. Other than that I just eat the real food.

    I Actually.....

I probably don't eat as I should, but I eat a way that works for me....every morning I have a slice of peanut butter toast...at around 10 AM I have a Nature Valley protein bar (yum)...12:30 is half a PB&J sandwich....maybe at 3 I'll have a piece of string cheese or an orange....I have whatever I fix my family for supper......and in the evenings I usually always have a TCBY frozen yogurt bar and I always always have my 2.5 cups of white cheddar popcorn. I get around 1200 - 1400 calories a day, but I lack protein (usually getting around 50-60 grams). I eat whatever I want but ALWAYS count my calories on Myfitnesspal.com (which I love). On the weekends I still stay within my calorie range but I'll include a trip to DQ (mini blizzards are great) or whatever treat we're indulging in....but again, I always count the calories.

    Chia Seeds

I bought some at Trader Joes yesterday. So, just put them in a yogurt, or along those lines?

    4 weeks post op

I'm 5weeks post-op and I found that Boca veggie burgers, Greek vanilla yogurt, 93%lean ground beef meatballs, and baked chicken breast shredded worked well for me. Shrimps, fish and eggs too.

    Soft food stage problem

When you start on soft foods. Eat one thing at time. Don't mix things. If you eat just chicken, you would know if your issue is chicken. If you eat just yogurt you would know it is yogurt.

    Mega Shake

You girls are lucky.....At preop all I was allowed to have was optifast shake every 2.5 hours, and water...That was it. No yogurt, no lettuce, no fruit or veggies. I did drop 11 lbs before the surgery though. Good luck ladies....The 2 weeks after surgery were the hardest for me on the liquid diet. I am 4 days shy of being 4 weeks post op. I start solids on Friday and I cannot wait

    July Sleever's

Clears will be gone before you know it. Then it's onward to yogurt, drinkable yogurt, delicious Protein drinks, Soups. Egg drop soup was my favorite.

    Breakfast Troubles

Plain Greek Yogurt flavored with dry Jello crystals .... or .... 1 Poached egg and Johnsonville maple flavored sausage links (2-3) ....or.... 1 egg scrambled with grated cheese. These are things i eat post-op .... I ate the same pre-op, just more of it...lol
  11. The hernias, heartburn, and small issues are easy to deal with. You never have to worry about meal planning if you have yogurt, cottage cheese, rotisserie chicken, smoked salmon, tuna, veggies, PB2, Proteins, etc. on hand. I love this simple life after a lifetime of cooking hearty meals. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  12. I, too, used the Premier Protein Shakes and was getting sick of them after surgery (I am about 9 weeks out). I read someone else's tip to add instant coffee to the chocolate premier shake and now I drink that every morning because it tastes sooo good I add ice to water it down just a bit and add a Tablespoon of instant decaf coffee (before I add the ice)...it's like having a mocha coffee. I usually have a Fage yogurt for breakfast and by the time I am done showering and getting ready for work, I can start drinking this shake while I drive to work...easy routine! and 43 grams of protein by the time I get to work
  13. I think I may have ate to fast. It tasted really good. I was excited because the fish had 20 Protein in it. I've been getting most of my protein from shakes and greek yogurt so I thought this would be a great way to get my protein in. I will try it again next week. I still have to figure out my signal. As far as portion sizes it really just varies on what it is that I'm eating. I can eat a cup of greek yogurt. This morning I ate 1 cup of chex Cereal and 1 cup of milk. On the other hand I made the ricotta bake and I could only eat 1/4c-1/2c. Refried Beans same thing. I can eat 1 string cheese which fills me too. Yhanks for the responses!

    Lactose can be your Enemy!

I was in a stall for about 3 weeks, then gained about 2 lbs in a week and I called my bari team in near hysterics! Very discouraged. I was feeling awful, with stomach upset, gas, bloating, lethargy. All that has gone away since I cut out dairy--which admittedly has been hard, b/c cheese (esp. cottage cheese) and yogurt had been a big part of my eating plan.

    Lactose can be your Enemy!

Oh yes...lactose can certainly have that effect. Which makes it inconvenient as heck b/c most pre-made shakes are heavy in lactose. Generally now I use protein powder (I like IsoPure, BioTrust and Purely Protein), and make my own shakes with either lactose free milk, oat milk or almond milk. Eggs don't bother me, (but I do know they bother some who are lactose intolerant). so I eat them a lot (egg beaters, because of the calories). When I did puree's, I actually ran chicken through the food processor with a little broth and it made a thick, high protein soup. It sounds gross but with a few spices it wasn't that bad I also had to give up cottage cheese and yogurt, although I did try almond milk based yogurt, but didn't care for it. Some people do like it though, so maybe it's worth a try for you. Peanut butter and almond butter are also a nice treat but the calories/fat can be a problem if you have too much, of course. Hope that helps a little. It's a challenge, for sure, but you got this! I've found that this whole process is full of ups and downs (and not just the weight either) but when I focus on the big picture and remember why I did this, it makes it all worthwhile!

    TMI and a little gross

@kranky813 - hmmm change your brand of yogurt (sweeteners?) or creamer? if I eat/drink too much artificial sweetener that happens to me, sometimes. Not all the time.

    Pointless Public Information Announcement...

This too shall pass. :-) I've actually regained my tolerance for chocolate Protein powder, which I thought would never happen. I may have broken up with Fage yogurt tho ...

    The unfill

**Some bandsters seek a too-tight band, thinking it will help them lose weight quickly since they are limited to liquids. But that thinking may backfire because Bandsters Cannot Live On Liquids Forever. What happens when your band is too tight? You get Soft Calorie Syndrome. To avoid the pain which happens when you try to eat solid foods, you rely on foods that will slide through a too-tight band, just 'cause you are hungry. But Soft Calorie Syndrome and the foods that compose it will never provoke satiety. So you end up eating way too much, and perhaps even gaining weight. Ice cream, milkshakes, even soup and yogurts---all soft calories which don't promote a feeling of fullness.** i totally AGREE with this.......glad you feel better parr
  19. You will find out when you start eating more and feel the restriction. Since you just had surgery not to long ago, you really won't be eating any large amounts of anything for a while, no matter how hungry you feel. I think it took me at least 6 to 8 months beforeI felt like I could eat a decent amount. Now I do well to eat a full chicken sandwich from Chick-Fil-a. Usually there is always some left. When my co-workers are with me, they don't order much food because they know I'm not going to finish everything and they have become accustomed to eating the rest lol. Yogurt is one of my favorite foods. I have honestly never tried cottage cheese. When I get a hunger craving now, I eat either yogurt or drink a boldthouse shake which has 32 grams of Protein in it. The shakes/smoothies have a lot of calories but its better than alternatives.

Mexico drs = NO diet pre op?

Three days is nothing. My MX dr required liquids and yogurt. I started slamming protein drinks also. I was at a lower BMI too and I don't think that has anything to do with it anyway. It's prep for surgery regardless of what you weigh I think that's what you were saying/asking?

lets be honest, 1 week post op

I'm on day 6...started eating Yoplat (is that spelled right? LOL) a couple days ago and I seem to get through a little more than a half before I feel "satisfied". How did you find the greek yogurt? Was the consistency too thick? LOL

    Food Scale

For stomach content, volume is maybe better even though theoretically the same issue applies. A cup of whole strawberries weighs a lot less than if you cut them into quarters -- but that will also make a huge difference in your stomach. Whole, it's probably 5 to a cup, if you cut them, it's more like 10 and your stomach will surly feel that difference too. For counting calories and logging food weighing is pretty much a must if you want to be accurate. With our small calorie amounts - I am shooting for 900 - 100 calories over or under has a much bigger impact than in a 2000 calorie diet (2.2x as much, LOL) With my Protein, if I use 3 scoops and compare it to the weight, I am about 30% calories over -- I don't mind the extra protein, but it also is big calorie hit. Same with Cereal - 1 cup from a fresh box is much less than 1 cup from the bottom of the box which has much smaller pieces. With "loose" items or calorie dense items, I would not go without weighing it. Plus, for me it makes less of a mess. I have big yogurt containers so if I weigh out a portion, I don't have any additional dishes like measuring cups. I use the spoon I eat with and spoon it into the dessert bowl that is sitting on the scale. If eye-balling it works for you, that's great. For me, I am too much of a virgo to accept this "unknown".
  23. Before I give my story, a little disclaimer...I am in NO WAY suggesting disregarding your surgeon's prescribed diet! OK...I was having a tough time of it too...2 weeks liquid, 2 weeks puree, 2 weeks soft, then try it as tolerated.... At my post op appt, I leveled with my doc...I figure, he's a bariatric surgeon, my struggles shouldn't shock him and if they do, I wanted to be the first to enlighten him Well, he wasn't surprised OR disgusted by my struggles...He said to me "Well, you're probably ready at this point to slowly advance your diet as you feel comfortable, BUT DO NOT CHALLENGE THE BAND OR POUCH! The first 6 weeks after surgery, the band is MOST VULNERABLE to slippage, so take it easy." He trusted me to use good judegement, and I did. HOWEVER, I discussed it with him first. I told him how I was stuggling and that I was starving and that I did have a little yogurt and it was OK...I was HONEST with him I guess I am telling you all of this to say this: Call your surgeon and be honest with him/her about your struggles...you may be pleasantly surprised, you may not, but either way, you'll become more focused because you talked it out with a professional
  24. my instructions are a little different. I have Clear liquids for day 1 and day 2 after surgery. Day 3-6, I have full liquids which include yogurt (no seeds or fruit) and strained tomato or vegetable juice and cream of wheat or oatmeal or grits. Then pureed diet for one week nd then soft diet for two weeks, then start working in solid foods. I also was told to go on all liquids for 10-14 days before surgery, which was really bad for the first couple of days, but then I seemed to be getting used to it. I miss meat more than anything. The first night I started my liquids, I dreamed about steak, fried chicken and ham all in the same night! After that, it did get easier. I think the liquids beforehand will make the liquids afterwards easier.

    restriction

My Md had guidelines that I could only eat strained creamed soups and liquids the first 1-2 weeks. That included yogurt, protein shakes 2 days after surgery and then cottage cheese and refined beans began at week 2/3. However it is hard to drink or eat much initially. I used a shot glass to get 2 ounces at a time and a timer so every 15 minutes I would drink 2 ounces. Once I was on soft foods like 1 egg or tuna it initially took 45 minutes to eat that then a week or so later 30 minutes, then eventually 20 minutes etc. Food wasn't appealing and after a few bites I felt like I just ate a Thanksgiving dinner. It wasn't painful but just that blah I'm done feeling. I think around 3/4 months I could drink a 11 oz. protein shake in 30-45 minutes, eat a 5oz cup of yogurt or 1 egg in 20 minutes but not much more in one sitting. Suddenly at 6 months I could comfortably eat about a half cup of food total if some of it was soft. Not a half cup of chicken, but a 1/4 cup of protein and a 1/4 cup of soft veggies. Now at 9 months sometimes I can eat almost a cup in one sitting in a normal amount of time like 10-15 minutes but usually it's closer to 1/2 to 3/4. I don't feel deprived or over full.
