    hiatal hernia

Hi! I'm also getting a hiatus hernia repair and gastric bypass at the same time, I've had my hernia for several years and I've not had that pain as you described rather I've had a lot of acid reflux if I had anything to eat a couple of hours before bedtime, even water! and it will rush up with acid burning my oesophagus so badly, I would be sitting up all night, awake! As soon as my inner organs whent into sleep mode the acid would rush up its teribble! I only take small sips of water when I go to bed to avoid the acid reflux trigger, hopefully with this surgery that'll all go away, my surgery is due on the 27th of April, scared but excited and enthusiastic at the same time [emoji4] well hopefully most of my problems will have gone when I lose the weight [emoji1696][emoji1696][emoji120][emoji120][emoji120] Sent from my SM-N981B using BariatricPal mobile app
  3. My surgeon told me that the sleeve was the only one that was permanent, the bypass was reversible which was interesting. for me since i am paying out of pocket, Both are permanent because i dont have another 20 grand to spend on getting something reversed lol
  4. We had similar restrictions in California. I think pre op was the hardest! I had my bypass 4-5-22. The waiting alone..Then you wake up, the nurses control any pain or nausea and you are off to your room where you can wash up, make calls, and wiggle your toes. I was a lil groggy, but really happy. I could not wait to lift my gown and see proof my dream was real! I started walking that night. Before I left the next day I had walked just a tip over a mile doing laps around the floor. I felt like a 🌟! Some laps were 1 time others up to 4. Wishing you all of the best!!

WLS and MS (getting the sleeve)

As far as the Celebrex goes, nobody has said anything about it. But I think I'll call my surgeon tomorrow and ask. My neuro is a big advocate for smoking weed for MS pain (I live in Colorado...what a shocker lol) or giving narcotic pain relief, but I refused both (not my jam at all) so he gave me Celebrex for the inflammation, which takes the edge off and keeps it manageable. I don't think he wants me to be off it because he doesn't want me to have absolutely nothing for pain since I still have quite a bit most days. My surgeon didn't say anything when we went over my meds, but maybe that's because it's a sleeve and not bypass??? I'll call tomorrow. Thanks for mentioning it!!
  6. technically speaking... Gastric bypass is reversible, Gastric sleeve is not. But i hope you find out what is the problem soon! keep us updated so you can get thru and reach your goal weight.

WLS and MS (getting the sleeve)

Hi! I don't have MS but I have RA. I know it's like comparing apples and oranges, but they're still fruit. They're both still autoimmune diseases. I've had umm about six surgeries since my diagnosis and I've never experienced a flare from surgery. I do experience flares still occasionally, so it's not that I do not flare, but surgery never brings them on. My rheumy attributes my lack of flares to be that my RA is pretty much in remission. My rheumy is my biggest cheerleader for getting revision to RNY. She says getting to a more normal bmi will decrease inflammation and make my disease even milder. She says if I do flare after surgery, no problem, she'll just administer a steroid injection. So your neuro cleared you for surgery, they must feel that the benefits of the surgery will outweigh the risks. If you have any doubt, schedule another appointment with your neuro and discuss it with them. Has your wls surgeon okay'ed you for continuing the celebrex after sleeve surgery? I stopped mine after committing to revision to RNY. I had to know I could survive without it forever. I wish you all the best!
  8. Hi, all: I’ve been in the April 2022 Surgery Board, but I have a question for here. My surgery will likely be in the coming 4-6 weeks. I had planned on the sleeve, but testing shows a very large hiatal hernia…more than half my stomach is in my chest. 😳 I do know that is not that uncommon. Anyway, has anyone here had the sleeve procedure at the same time as having a large hernia repaired? I’d prefer the sleeve because of the shorter surgery duration. But, I want to do what is the best medical decision. I have to articulate a preference to my surgeon before we meet in a week or so. Thanks in advance for any information.

    What's Your Food Nemesis?

Doritos and potato chips omg I could eat a whole family size bag before my surgery. My dietician and therapist want me to incorporate protein chips in small amounts so I am working on having a neutral relationship to chips. So far so good. I feel for the first time in my life theyre just chips, who cares? Have had no urge to overeat on them. I'm also so thankful I've never been into sugar because I haven't had real sugar since January. My dietician said I could try it on special occasions in small amounts but im afraid of dumping. Haven't experienced that yet and really don't want to. I had my bypass on Feb 14th. Sleeve with high BMI

I got the sleeve, and to get where I fantasize about being (top of healthy BMI range), I'll have to lose 225 lbs. That is a crazy large number, and I have debated whether bypass or another surgery might have been a better choice. But, I remember what one surgeon I consulted with told me early on: "It's a tool. It doesn't do the work for you" and that helps me a lot. He reminded me that plenty of people are really successful with both surgeries, and that many people also fail with both surgeries. They are not magic bullets. Moreover, you have to be comfortable with the physical change you are making to your body. Initially, I wanted sleeve but let everything I read convince me that was a bad choice to maximize weight loss. I was going to do bypass, but I was never happy with that decision. The surgeon above really forced me to rethink why I was going the bypass route and once I thought about it, I knew sleeve was right for me so long as my endoscopy didn't preclude it. After I made that switch, I was just so at peace with my decision (at least until the pre-surgery jitters came up right before surgery!) I also realize I may not get to where I would like to get to, and that is also okay. I have an "ultimate goal" in mind, but I've also set some interim goals that would result in much improved health outcomes, and will be moments for me to reassess where I am and whether I want to try and keep going. I also don't want to be constantly fighting to maintain a certain weight, if another weight still provides health and appearance benefits without that constant battle I may decide to stay there. Basically, I want to find a weight where I can be at peace with my body while also taking better care of it.

    Regrets...anyone?

I'm 3 1/2 yrs post gastric bypass. Lost more than I ever dreamed I'd lose. I'm maintaining at 105 lbs. I wear a size 2P. I've had 5 surgeries in the last 3 1/2 yrs-gastric bypass, hip replacement and 3 plastic surgeries for skin removal. No complications. I'd do it all again today! Absolutely no regrets!
  12. Hi & welcome. I sorta had a Hiatal hernia repair when I had my bypass 4 years ago. I had a fundolipacation 15 years ago to repair the hernia. That lasted about 8 years & is slowly failed. I had the bypass to repair all of that. I have lost 65-70lbs depending on the day😸 Good luck with your surgery.
  13. I would love to see this move to a post op board! I had my Roun Y revision on 4-5-22. Also a hiatal hernia repair. Gosh everything you said about looking back at the logistics of bed mobility, going potty, napping! I spent my first 2 nights at home in my recliner for comfort. My belly was bloated and surgical sites tender. I only really needed Tylenol for pain. Please remember how important hydration is for healing. The complications are frightful if you get to far behind or worse you let your GI system go silent. Just take baby sips of water or whatever is in your list from your doctor. The worst is hopefully behind you. One sip and one step at a time we will all succeed!

    Regrets...anyone?

Regret and Shame. I had a Roun Y 23 years ago. The first cpl years were maGical! The weight dropped off, my skin snapped back, I could do any activity I wanted. Then somewhere between 2-5 yr I started having one more bite, a glass of wine, a bite more dessert and so on. I don’t really have dumping or a ton of restrictions. I eat like everyone else eat the table. I started putting on 10 pounds at a time and finally reached my pre op wt. Because I had an open procedure it took a long time to find the right doc to do a safe revision. My revision was last Tue. I will stay true to the guidance for the long haul. It is a precious tool, but I have to take responsibility for what passes my lips. I’m great full for the community and the support.

Messing up my pre-op diet 😩

YES! I have a co worker having a revision with another doc in town. Her pre and post are totally different than mine. I miss coffee but it was a small sacrifice for a second chance. When you get to the other side just follow the guidelines. Be well!
  18. Hi, I had a revision of a Roun Y on Tue with a hernia repair. The hernia has not slowed my healing a bit. Surgery was Tuesday with an overnight stay. I’m doing light chores, driving and shopping today. My doc keeps us on a liquid diet for 2 weeks and protein drinks. I tried broth, it was ok. But just paid a bit more for Bone Broth… wow! A new favorite! Flavors are wonderful and still on plan. There is never really a great time to take off work for surgery. But you will know the best time for yourself and your family.
  19. I had the ESG with Dr. McGowan in Cary, NC Oct 14, 2021. VERY happy with him, all his staff and everyone at the Wake Med hospital. FIRST CLASS all the way! That being said. Day of surgery my weight was 253. This coming week is my 6 month anniv and I have lost down to 227. Yes it is great! but I was so hoping for more after 6 months. I reassure myself that my skin will adapt better by losing slower, I haven't had any hair loss, etc. But I am 54 and ready to live my life! This baggage is in my way and keeping me from living my life the way I want to. A few months ago, the nurse put me on Topomax to help with cravings (as my insurance will not pay for Wegovey or other "weight loss" meds- I was a self pay for the surgery). Several months after the surgery I asked the question . . does the Dr. make everyones' stomach in surgery the same resulting 20% size?? or is everyone's different because ... Patient A's stomach could hold 5 lbs of food, and patient B could only hold 1 lb of food. So did they both end up with same size stomach pouch? The answer is no. He gives you stomach pouch that is 20% of YOUR stomach size. So that is why some people can hold more than others. Makes sense. Kind wish I had thought about it pre surgery though! I'd asked for an extra small one! LOL I don't feel a lot of restriction anymore. So I am wondering where do I go from here? Should I ask for a different medication or increased dose of topomax? Does Dr. McGowan have a way to do a scan or ultrasound and see if your sutures have come loose or if your pouch has stretched out? Do they have a way to do a revision and put in tighter sutures or make a smaller pouch? and if they do . . is it the same cost as the original surgery? I know I am under their care program for a year that includes nutrition counseling, etc. Is there a cost to continue that after a year? Anyone who knows answers, please let me know. I want to be able to think about things before my zoom call later this week.

    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hi everyone, I am writing with my postop update. Maybe it will help someone waiting for surgery or in the immediate postop phases. On 4/5/22 I had a lap band to gastric bypass conversion. My procedure was complicated by the fact that I had a hiatal hernia and then the surgeon discovered an umbilical hernia (previously undiagnosed and not seen during preadmission studies) which he also needed to repair. The complexity of the surgery led to a two-night admission. I was on a constant IV drip and had to use the bathroom approximately every hour - the entire time! It really hurt to prop myself up to get out of bed and I would work on developing those muscles preop if I could turn back time. I hardly ate any food (broth and sugar free Jello) in the hospital, and I am still struggling now because I am just not hungry. I walked three times during the two days in the hospital - not ideal but it was the best I could do at the time. My pulse ox dipped to the low 80s several times (my normal is 99-100), so I was using supplemental oxygen to help. My abdomen was incredibly bloated and bruised. It is now going down slightly which I credit to walking and Colace. I cannot stress how helpful I think Colace has been for me. I have to wear a binder around my abdomen, and I do not yet know for how long. It is helpful when I cough and do my breathing exercises. I am now super deconditioned, which really surprised me. I know some members of this forum have been able to bounce back fairly quickly, but everyone should consider the possibility that they might need more time. I still get winded every time I move (i.e., bed to chair, chair to standing, etc.). I need naps and I have never been a napper. I am definitely going to have to take at least an extra week off from work. I try to walk a little a few times a day now and it is very tiring, so I use a cane just for reassurance. All in all, I am so happy with my decision to have surgery! I am extremely grateful to read everyone's stories and see questions and answers on this board and I hope April 2022 Surgery Buddies (and whoever else wants to participate) can move to the postop board next month so we can continue to share our progress. I wish everyone who is still waiting for their April 2022 surgery the best! I will be happy to answer any questions that anyone has. I hope we all keep in touch! Thanks!

    Hianal Hernia Surgery

No, I’m still waiting on a surgery date. ☹️ The hernia was suspected by my surgeon and showed up in pre/procedure testing. I had been hoping for tomorrow, 4/11, as my surgery date, but obviously that is not going to happen. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m thinking seriously of waiting till June 10th when school is done. I’m slightly apprehensive about piggybacking the hernia recovery with bypass recovery as my original plan was to return to school rather quickly (3-4 days) after both. Right now the ball is in the surgeon’s court and I’m waiting.

    Day Of Surgery

these are quick surgeries. Sleeves are probably about an hour. Bypass not much longer. Of course, if they run into issues, it'll take longer.

Thank you for sharing. I am having a large hiatal hernia repaired with gastric bypass and your post was helpful. The recovery period and what to expect has been a mystery to me.

    RNY GB to DS Revision

    Best wishes on your revision!
  25. Had my bypass 2017 and ever since I've had problems with wind and bowl movements. They are offensive, often loose and you have to spend ages just flushing the toilet to make them go down. The wind is also uncontrollable, it's embarrassing. Has anyone else found the same and found anything that works.
