    CIGNA - supervised diet requirement

Cigna here also. 4 months from start to surgery. September kicked things off with the Bariatric program information session and scheduled my first nutritionist appointment the same week. I did the same thing and checked with Cigna on the requirements. Cigna said I could do 3 months supervised diet with a nutritionist and they gave me some names of those in their network. I had to do at least one nutritionist visit with the Bariatric surgeons office, but it was not close to my home. So I picked a nutritionist close by to meet with me 4 times (September, October, November, and December), and she documented my diet, exercise and weight. In parallel, my surgeon let me do all the pre-op appointments and tests. So timing wise, it worked out well and i had my nutritionist send my 3-month supervised diet chart notes to the surgeon immediately after my 4th appointment. By that time, I completed all the other Cigna and surgeons prerequisites and just needed the last piece from the nutritionist. Paperwork submitted week before Christmas, and approved in one week!!!! Then was able to schedule surgery mid-January. I will say it was a very very busy time, particularly because I also had to get appointments and clearances from 4 other specialists. So right away I started scheduling those. In the end, the 3 months worked out to be just the right amount of time to fit everything in ( oh and work full time and have a family, etc). So knowing your insurance requirements up front is the best thing to do!!! Best of luck!!
  2. Can you say yum??? Ordered Bari wise hot chocolate from bariatric choice and it is delish, about 80cal no fat less than 5gm carbs and 15grams protein!! I miss my coffee and hot chocolate this time of year and this really hits the spot!! I purchased a few of the variety packs (about $11) for 7 and love the mint and raspberry chocolate trying the amaretto and its yummy too!
  3. Just curious has anyone evr purchased foods from this site or any other sites? Thanks, Pudgy

    Holy Vitamins, Batman!

I tried the Celebrate Vitamins too. I found the big ones chalky and the chewy ones had a weird aftertaste. I prefer the Bariatric fusion chewables but you have to take 4 a day. They do include Iron and Calcium though, so no need to take extra of those.
  5. I had gotten very used to all of the flavors of Protein drinks before surgery, but post surgery they all made me sick. I finally got the Click coffee flavored kind and high protein hot chocolate. I put the Click (decaf still for me) with Water and ice in my magic bullet in the morning and drink it on my drive to work (45 minutes) and I have the hot chocolate (bariatric pantry) in the afternoon. My nutritionist wants me to add unflavored to my coffee to get a little bit more in one drink so I am working on that part. Those are the only ones that I have found that I enjoy. Hope that helps give you a couple of more ideas. HW 344, DOS 320, Surgery Date 2/20/13, CW 291.1 Sent from my iPad using RNYTalk

    Not enough protein shakes

Hmm that's a really good idea. Thanks so much!! I'll check my local GNC to see if they carry anything of the sort. I'm not one to normally say I'm starving bc I'm very fortunate and never have been, but this liquid diet has been tough, tough. My surgeon and the bariatric nurses I had to meet with post op yesterday assured me I wouldn't be hungry in a few days. I just would anything for a taco salad from my local Mexican restaurant! 7. Bigpapa. I learned a long time ago that you don't give advice unless someone specifically asks you for it. If they wanted to talk bariatric post care with you they would have.

    What’s it to you?

I decided to look into bariatric surgery a couple of years ago. I was always thin, until I hit about 40. Then I started to gain every year. I have Rheumatoid arthritis so my mobility is impacted, had a hysterectomy, arthritis meds can cause weight gain, etc, excuses, blah, blah, blah! But, I just turned 55; I have legal guardianship of my 10 yr old grandson who has some neurological issues. I am the only stability that kid has ever had and I decided that I needed to do something to make sure I was around for him for awhile yet. I also want to be able to do things with him. I didn't want him to someday be embarrassed when some kid asked him who was the fat, old lady. I'm 23 days out. I'm doing well. Surgery weight was 200, and I will go for my 1month post op in a few days. I think I'm gonna be a slow loser seeing as my BMI was a little lower to start with. But, that's okay. Like I said, I'm 55 and the skin doesn't bounce back like it used to. I just want to be able to go for bike rides, go swimming, etc. with my boy BEFORE he gets "too cool".

    New to BP

Welcome. You might also find a Bariatric Surgery Support Group Meeting in your area. Generally they happen monthly and are free. It seems like you are in the middle of the process. You will undergo a series of pre-op testing which takes almost a day. If they find anything of concern, they will schedule you for follow-on specialized tests with a specialist in the field of expertise. They are just trying to be extra careful to avoid problems during surgery. They will set a surgery date. Towards the end, there is a half day class that provides great detail about the surgery and post-op requirements. A lot of information is provided during this class.

    Tampa FL

I had my surgery done in Deerfield Beach... I think I might have an issue and was told to go to a hospital that specializes in bariatrics. I was wondering if anyone knows which hospitals around Tampa specialize in bariatrics? I think I remember something about Mease Dunedin or Tampa Gen? Sent from my SM-G930V using the BariatricPal App
  11. Feeling energized and renewed. I had surgery two years ago and only lost 40 pounds. Having been in an abusive relationship didn't allow me to work on me, now that I am out, I feel like I can finally work on me. Everyone's posts give me inspiration and motivation that I can do this. I recently learned I was banded too tightly and caused my esophagus to dilate and had fluid removed. I am seeing my dr in two days and hope all is well and can get a fill, as I get soooo hungry and have no restriction. Went from .7 to .4, big reduction. Good news is tht though weight loss is slow I have not gained any weight since the surgery. I started walking and jogging 3 miles daily mixed with tae bo, hopefully that will help me along. Having PCOS doesn't help either, but I am happy that I am not where I used to be. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me!

    Dr. Oz

It was just great to hear the doctors tell the world that we have not, by no means, chose the easy way out by having bariatric surgery to aid us in our fit against obesity. We are committing ourselves to a lifestyle that is totally foreign to us for th rest of our lives. If you don't know, we are some strong folks, with inner strentgh like nothing I've encountered!!!

    Shortie Porties--Banders that are short!

All my life I called myself 5'2"--even called myself 5'3" at one time! Come to find out at my Bariatric Center that I'm only 5.0"!! Now do you think it's that shrinkage / old age / gravity thing? Or is it a "Deceiving myself all along so I didn't seem so fat" kind or thing?? Doesn't it feel funny buying "Petites" in clothing, when in actuality I feel anything BUT Petite!! (Hel-l-l-o-o-o, humungous boobs and butt--nothing petite about that!!) Glad to see I'm not the only shorty in this forum, everyone!!

    Feeling Pretty Low

I haven't logged on in a very long time...I immediately went to your post because I'm a MS girl too. I'm 3 years out and lost 100 lbs. I've been feeling bad lately (physically and mentally- lots of stress in my life right now with an unruly teen) and almost as if I never had the surgery; honestly I've been scared to weigh. I finally did last night and I'm devastated. Ive gained 23 lbs from my lowest weight. I really needed to gain a little (everyone said I looked a little sick that small) butI feel like such a failure! I woke up this morning with renewed hope but I'm so scared I won't be able to get on track. I got a new exercise machine for Christmas and I know all the right things to do but what if it doesn't work? I will encourage you if you will encourage me Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  15. Hi, Does anyone have a list or a site to recommend that has high fiber foods you can eat on a bariatric diet? I rather the "old fashion" why of softening my stool then using a bunch of pills. Thanks in advance!

    The Lifestyle Lift

I mentioned to TerriDoodle in her thread....Dr. Heller comes to talk to Spivak's group. He was there last Tuesday but I couldn't make it. I think he'll be there in October some time. Wanda at Spivak's office just had some fairly extensive work done I think last week. He's one I am going to check out. We have a guy here in Clear Lake named Dr. Todd Adam I have heard good things about. There's also that guy on the TV show Big Medicine who does the post-bariatric surgery PS clean-up that they show. Not sure where his office is in town.

    Vitamins/suppliments

I hated the bariatric supplements. **shuder** But thankfully, after my sleeve had healed my nutritionist said I could switch to a swallowable. She recommended Rainbow Light Women's One. They have tons of stuff in there and I only have to take it once a day. They don't upset my stomach, either. I buy them on Amazon.
  18. Rockwood Weight Loss Surgery Center This is the total cost (minus two night stay in Deaconess Medical Center) for sleeve/bypass/lapband. They also require a bariatric psych eval (around $300), an EKG and labs. Some people might need more testing. These are not listed in cost, as you get them through PCP. Cost for sleeve is just under $7000.

    Weight loss journey

Well, all I can say is that bariatric surgery was the right decision for me. I am no longer diabetic! No longer have high blood pressure! Can walk up stairs without dying, and feel so much better. My weight loss is not fast, but I have lost 90 pounds since my high weight, and 73 pounds since surgery. I still have a ways to go, but it's progress! Good luck to you!! Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app
  20. I can so relate to your story, feelings and experiences. I just said to my husband yesterday how much I enjoy feeling like a normal person and not some freak of nature. I too was on the receiving end of many cruel remarks which created a defensiveness. There are a lot of ignorant ass holes in the world. My decision to have bariatric surgery was based on my own well being though and not on what others may have thought. You are so strong and brave to be so open. Big cyber hug and keep going forward!
  21. Hi everyone. My name is Margaret. I am a mother, wife, friend, employee advocate, and a lover of dogs. I live with my husband and Chug (Chihuahua/pug) in Colorado. I just had my revision surgery on June 30th from lap band to sleeve. I am at Bariatric Stage IV - eating pureed foods and drinking Protein drinks. I am limited to five foods: egg whites, plain yogurt, refried Beans, cottage cheese and pudding. I am also taking liquid Vitamins and getting B-12 monthly injections. My daily goals are to continue to drink 64 oz of Fluid each day; eat/drink 65 grams of protein, walk 30 minutes (if not more), and continue to protect my surgery incisions and stomach by not lifting, pulling, pushing anything over 15 lbs.I am glad that the doctor limits his patients to five foods because I think it's really easy at this point to overdue it on other soft foods that may not be so healthy for you. The weight is coming off slowly which I think is good. I feel pretty good except last night, I had a side ache next to the incision where my port use to be. Other than that, I feel really good. I think this surgery was much easier than the lap band. I still get hungry and the food that my husband is eating looks tempting. However, I try to remind myself that this is just head hunger. I don't think I am really hungry. I am no longer a coffee drinker since we were told to stop drinking it. I was totally addicted to coffee mostly because of the liquid creamers. I feel so much better and I no longer have to have coffee first thing in the morning I am just beginning this journey and I am still learning to listen to my body. I am not in a support group at this time but I would love to connect with others who are on a similar journey.

There is a group in London for all WLS patients http://www.london-bariatric.com/ or London Bariatric Support Group on Facebook.
  23. What part of Jersey North or South? I would find a doctor who take Medicaid instead. In Jersey there should be several. Check the major hospitals for their bariatric programs..
  24. If you were a cancer patient and 2 years into remission - would they tell you that it will likely come back??? NO! The medical profession still has a long way to go in terms of acceptance and understanding of bariatric surgery. Personally - I think it is a personal bias that certain individuals have in addition to a major lack of understanding of the physiological and psychological issues associated with WLS.
  25. I like Pure Protein from Target. 25 gm in 12 oz, goes down easy, tastes good. I buy the frosty chocolate and the vanilla is ok too. Coupons on line are $1.00 off each. For a good size tub of the powder, I pay about 17.99 without the coupon. They last a couple weeks drinking twice a day. I didn't care for the Bariatric Advantage mix at all. I know some people don't like products hawked by the biggest loser, but truly I was drinking them on my diet months before surgery and I never watched the biggest loser, so I wasn't aware. Anyway, they taste good. GG
