    This surgery is bullshit...

You might need more than 800 calories. I was supposed to get a minimum of 1200 as soon as possible after surgery. I've found that hard to get to sometimes and when I can't get there my weight loss stalls. It's entirely possible you are eating too little and that is sabotaging your efforts.
  2. I am so sorry you're going through this. It is so frustrating, and I agree with you about our corrupt healthcare system. From reading comments, some people are blaming unvaccinated for the shut down of elective surgeries. Both vaccinated and unvaccinated are getting covid, so let's (collectively) not get on our high horses about being vaccinated. (I'm vaccinated but don't give 1,000 flips whether a person is vaccinated or not - your body, your choice). I had my surgery in August 2021 right before the idiot governor stalled elective surgeries. I was on a recovery floor half full of covid patients, all of whom were homeless and put there by the state - such a sham. The only thing that got my surgery pushed through was that I was self pay. My insurance covered it, but I didn't want to jump through their stupid hoops and I wanted control over the timing of the surgery. My surgeon's office staff told me that it helped to be self pay, because after all costs were paid by Blue Cross Blue Shield (my insurance provider), the surgeon only made about $1,500 for my surgery. So they pushed to get me through the day before elective surgeries were shut down by the state. I pay about $800 a month for insurance. I had Stage 3 cancer in 2019 and still spent about $25k in out of pocket costs. I paid $1,700 for a PT scan myself because it was going to take the insurance company over a month to approve the scan, and since it was cancer I didn't want to wait that long. The healthcare system is broken, and insurance companies are evil. I 100% agree that politicians should stay TF out of healthcare. They came up with the BS food pyramid and look how great that has worked out for us. (Read Good Calories, Bad Calories, it's shocking how political corruption and food lobbyists in the corn industry and others led to the obesity epidemic in the U.S.). It's the insurance lobbyists and the politicians who suck up to them with their hands out who have screwed us. Sorry to hijack your post! I'm just very passionate about corruption across the board in the US, especially when it comes to how it negatively impacts us as citizens. Good luck and keep us posted about how things go for you. Hang in there, the surgery is worth it. Sent from my SM-N976V using BariatricPal mobile app

    Average calories

1400 for the first 6 months, from day 1. Then 1800 for 3 months. Now 2100-2300 a day, trying to find my maintenance intake (it's higher than this, clearly). Subtract 200 from each of these for their women's plans. My program strongly believes in keeping calories 'high' (lol) from the get-go for all as they say your body will otherwise get too used to living on very, very low amounts, and your new set point isn't dependent on calorie intake. AKA if you go 800 cals a day for a year, your body will get to its new set point, but then you'll be stuck maintaining at perhaps 1200, which for most is wildly unsustainable. The science isn't clear about this yet, though. What the science *is* clear about is the shocking regain rates for sleeve patients, and they're usually kept on extreme low calorie diets.

    This surgery is bullshit...

This must be so frustrating. Perhaps make an appointment with a nutritionist? I saw one pre-op, and I emailed her several times after my surgery asking her follow up questions. Everyone’s body is different, maybe you need different types of foods, maybe more calories, I don’t know…. But I’m sure that your surgeon and their team want you to be successful and to support you after the surgery! 😀

    This surgery is bullshit...

Well I’ve been logging my meals since I originally posted this and following the doctors advice to the T and I still haven't lost a single pound. Every visit he acts like he doesn’t believe me when I say I’m staying at 800 calories a day. So I’ve been told a million times by my doctor and people on this forum that the surgery is just a tool. I get that. But a tool for what? How do you use the tool? I don’t ever feel full, I’m always hungry, I’m not losing weight…. What a useless tool.
  6. Had this stupid surgery 5 months ago and I’m still not losing any weight. I’ve been logging my meals and sticking to 800 calories a day like the doctor told me to. And every time I see him he repeats the same thing (It’s obvious he doesn’t believe I’m keeping my calories on target) and he schedules another appointment. Every time I weight exactly the same. I still don’t understand what the surgery is supposed to do for me if I’m required to stick to a low calorie diet long term. Yeah, yeah… “the surgery is just a tool”…. A tool for what? What benefit is the surgery providing? None as far as I can tell.

    Average calories

I'm a few years out so I don't remember how many calories I was eating early on, BUT....my clinic had the bypass people and the sleeve people on the exact same plan, so calories would have been the same. I know a lot of people on here eat around 600-800 calories from about month 2 to about a year out, but some plans are allowing more than that nowadays. And then there are some clinics that don't want patients focusing on calories (mine was one of those - but I always knew how many I was getting since the tracking apps display calories)

So I'll soon be moving to soft/regular diet phase and I was wondering how did your average calories look like 1 month, 2 months, 3 months etc post-Op? I believe Sleeve vs Bypass folks may have different # of average calories given the different anatomy. I do have a dietician's appt next week so just wanted to get some numbers. Wanna be prepared with any concerns or questions I have may.

    Just a journey

eh woke up this morning thinking i would SEE and taste below 180lbs, my scale just gave weird readings, started by slowing 5lbs instead of zero, and then just weighed me at everything from 179.4 to 184.6 LOL FML i looked and looked for new batteries but i dont think thats what the issue is. Ill report back tomorrow weight wise if i can find new batteries. I brought cupcakes and these ppl canceled my order so i think the weight loss god are looking out for me. I had around 1050 calories today, tracked on my fitness pal. im not running this evening, i dont fancy it and thats that. Ill go for a nice long run in the morning if its not raining in england, by long i mean hopefully more than 4miles, no more than 6, in my mind really 4.3ishhhhh I am also going to run some errands with my friend tomorrow, we might do lunch, and i look forward to it.

learning to let go of old eating habits

I’m a bit over a year out, and I’m firmly in camp carbs are fine. I know there’s no way I can eliminate carbs forever. It’s not the way I want to live my life. I did eliminate candy and pastries/cookies, because I feel like those are a slippery slope for me, but no fruit or potatoes or even sushi and beer just isn’t going to work for me. I exercise a fair amount and I keep my overall calorie count down, but I’m not giving up carbs for life. We go out to a local pizza place on occasion where you can get a slice and a salad. I always eat the salad first and have a few bites of the pizza before I get full. So no, I don’t go crazy like I used to, but I still am having some.
  11. It's been freezing cold here in SoCal (don't laugh, our homes are built to vent heat, not retain it, so 33 is truly cold). I went to the outlet mall and saw massive markdowns in Hollister. I kind of laughed, because that store is basically aimed at teenage lacrosse players whose bodies turn calories into inches and muscle without even really trying, and because pre-op I would never have fit in anything at all. Well, I found a pair of joggers that looked warm and fuzzy and wonderful, and automatically grabbed an XXL, the largest size... and they looked like clown pants on me. Waaaaaves of fabric. I ended up buying a large and could theoretically have made a medium work! You could have knocked me over with an economy-size feather.
  12. Some people are just slow losers. But everybody and every body is bound by the CICO (calories in calories out) equation. If you are eating in a caloric deficit, which literally every post-op bariatric patient (regardless of surgery) is, you are going to lose weight. It just may not be leaps and bounds. And for those who lost a ton of weight quickly, a lot of that is water weight and many of us stalled after our body recalculated its hydration needs, whereas many slow losers lose steadily. It. Will. Come. Off.

Regrets for a Food & Wine Lover?

Great guys room thread! Foodie here in the sense I can cook and spend an ungodly amount of cash on dining out in restaurants. Still do. There's amazing lower-fat options (needed for my surgery), and suddenly I'm pretty happy the veggie wave is rolling over us. For me, dining out isn't about how much food I can eat. It's the total experience of sharing a meal and a glass or two of wine with friends or family. And that hasn't changed one bit. I can drink less, but I make room for alcohol in my calorie count. It all works out.

    Just a journey

Good evening, I just came back from my run, it was pretty good. 4miles out and back i worked from home so i spent much of my day thinking about cookie dough LOL FML i am trying to kill the fat girl that lives within, I had 2 protein shakes,1 protein bar, some crackers (say 4/5), and 2 low calorie chocolate flavor yogurts, two cubes of lamb 4cm x4cm, about 3ltres of water and a lot of coffee so thinking about 1200 calories or so, which is a lil high but w.e will weigh tomorrow and see what its hitting for, hoping to wake up under 180. It looks like i will get my bag and body before new year! if i do i swear i wont know how to act!! get a new bag, get a new body, get a new ah ah ahh

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Hi everyone, it's now just over a month since my surgery and I am feeling pretty much back to normal. I'm having some trouble slowing down my eating - I tend eat the first three-quarters of a meal really quickly and then kind of remember I'm not supposed to and slow right down. I'm still having a bit of a problem with getting enough fluids - I really need to prioritise that more. What tends to happen is I get hungry (and sadly I do get properly hungry several times a day) and start eating immediately, when what I should really do is drink a glass of water first to make sure I'm up to date with fluids. Repeat this 3 or 4 times a day and there are several hours when I can't or don't want to drink anything because I'm full. Otherwise it's full steam ahead. After a long stall post-op I have now lost 7lbs since I came home exactly 4 weeks ago. I'm hoping to see a bit more next month - averaging 600-700 calories a day, definitely no more and sometimes a bit less. How is everyone else getting along now?

    Considering revision

Hi - I’m also in the same boat. I had a sleeve done in Jan 2014 and it worked well. I then got pregnant 8 months out and had to actively work to get in enough calories for pregnancy and nursing. My weight has gradual lag crept back up. I’m now looking into revision options. My surgeon in NY suggested a band two years ago but I never went ahead with it. Now I’m looking at either a DS or bypass, not sure which one. I feel that I’m one of those people where the sleeve was always going to be part one of a two step phase.
  17. I’m having the same worry! Monday will be 4 weeks for me (RNY on 11/22), and right now I’ve only lost 11 pounds since surgery. I have no problem getting enough protein — 60-90g, right from the start — but I do struggle to drink more than 40-50oz of water each day, and I’m definitely not walking as much as I should. I know my weight loss will be less dramatic than someone who had a higher starting BMI, but I wonder if I’m on track. I just transitioned from liquids to soft foods at the start of the week, and I find myself worrying (a tiny bit) about the “extra” calories…crazy, right?!
  18. Food pic dump! Yesterday’s snack: homemade milk bread, chicken salad, Parmesan, & crunchy garlic chilli oil. Ate one of them : 169 calories Yesterday’s dinner : Salad! : 336 calories for the whole thing. Leftovers shown, which i tossed cuz it just wasn’t yummy enough to go back to. I blame the pate, it was kinda yuk (as you can see how i pushed it all to the side) and it touched the other food and made it smell like paté, lol. Todays breakfast/lunch : Another salad! 373 calories. Currently eating it. If don’t finish (which I already know I won’t) I’ll eat rest for a snack cuz it’s delicious.
  19. Just wondering what size portions you are doing. I weigh out my portions, but don’t wait between bites. Right now I usually have 2-3 oz protein and 1-2 oz veg. My calories are around 800 a day and I’m a little over a month from surgery. I’m hoping I’m doing things right and am hopeful that the sleeve will help me to not overeat.
  20. That sucks, I'm sorry you're struggling! Are you tracking what you eat (and maybe drink?). What kind of calorie level are you looking at on a day to day basis?
  21. So my family's regular primary doctor retired and I am seeing this new doctor tomorrow for the first time for a new patient visit. I am wondering how I can talk about my interest in a referral for weight loss surgery and if it will be potentially difficult or will I need hit all these certain points or a criteria (besides my high bmi). I want to be geniuine and just talk about my issues and how I feel but I am afraid of being belittled or just told to be in a calorie deficit and exercise. My biggest fear is them saying no.

    Oatmeal

I'm normally (pre-surgery) a steel cut kind of girl, but post surgery I have switched to rolled and quick oats (I mix these in with yogurt and let them sit a bit to bulk up my snack with some extra needed calories). I just was not sure I could handle steel cut in the first few months after surgery. At some point I'll try them again since I prefer the texture by leaps and bounds. One advantage to the non-steel cut oats is cooking times... so much quicker!

    Just a journey

    Weight Loss Stall

I think there is way too much not said here that could explain why you are not losing: 1. Are you exercising at all? 2. Are you drinking enough water 3. Are you tracking your calorie intake? If so, are you limiting yourself to less than 800-900 calories per day? 4. Are you getting the required protein in your diet? If you are doing 2, 3 these things you simply MUST be losing weight, atleast some. It is scientifically impossible to not lose weight with that much of a calorie deficit.
