  1. I have 3 capsules that I have to take. I have been told to empty the contents into something like yogurt. I have tried yogurt, applesauce, and today V8. I am really struggling to get these down. Gagging with each swallow. I'm 5 days post op and just want to swallow these meds. The largest is the Bariatric Advantage vitamins with iron. When did you all start swallowing pills that are larger than MnMs? Any advise on how to get the powder down?

    Food Before and After Photos

Chicken, Greek yogurt, hummus, carrots, ryvita crispbread (not featured raw peanut butter & granola bar) What? I was hungry... Now I'm not 🎉
  3. I would be frustrated, too. My pre-op diet was a lot more bearable than what you're doing, in that it was essentially the long-term diet of a bariatric patient,* just ... more, because I didn't have the tool yet. Protein first, then veggies/fruit (fruit was limited to 1 serving per meal, but I could have it with every meal if I wanted), and I was allowed whole grains, as well (also limited to 1 serving per meal -- 1/2 cup brown rice, 1 wrap, and so on). Snacks were not encouraged, but I could have a cheese stick if I really needed it. Unlimited sugarfree jello and popsicles got me through a lot of night time hunger, since I was supposed to be losing 10% of my body weight on that diet. (And I did, just barely.) Keto's a lot harder for me to stick to, although if you've been doing it since April, I guess by now you've got your household and friends working with you (for instance: not doing meetups at pizza joints all the time). I wonder if you might want to take this time to switch over to something closer to what Kaiser will want you to do, long-term? You'll regain a little of your natural water weight, going back to eating fruit and higher-carb vegetables, and some people find that to be too upsetting, so this is just an idea for you to consider, no pressure. But once I settled into it a little, I found the normal long-term bariatric patient diet to be really doable, and that encouraged me a lot, in the time leading up to my surgery--I didn't have these "I can't do this diet anymore" feelings, so much (until the liquid diet, ugh). It didn't feel like a diet. I even had small cheats, from time to time (examples: a small piece of pie at my partner's birthday, a trip out with friends who wanted frozen yogurt--mine was heavy on the fruit, light on the yogurt, pizza with some veggies on it a maximum of once per month), and continued to lose weight. It felt good, for me, anyway. To be clear: I'd still have been frustrated to have the process take so long. Not in an "I can't do this" kind of way, but just because the anxiety of having it hanging over me, and having to hold off on some things I wanted (a new job, mostly) would have been upsetting. I just wouldn't have suffered any additional strain from the diet. Anyway, whether this is a good idea for you or not, your feelings are entirely justified. It's reasonable to be upset. *sure, sure, lots of bariatric patients do keto, post-op, but there aren't that many doctors that force it on you -- I know for a fact Kaiser doesn't
  4. I’m 3 days post op and my tastes have changed. I used to put fruit punch Mio in my water and it tastes bitter now. My go to Greek yogurt was pills triple 9 chocolate and that tastes terrible now. I’m also craving tuna and eggs (not together) which I’ve always hated and real crunchy iceberg lettuce.

Surgery was Monday, things feel weird

I feel better this am. I never would have thought half a yogurt would make me feel like I just had Thanksgiving dinner.

I had a similar situation and it was a week before I went - and it wasn’t very impressive either. My, friend you are normal. I was recommended a stool softener and Miralax, which I took regularly until I started going daily. I once stopped too soon right after moving to a stage 2 diet, and had the worst constipation of life (also, many of the stage two meals and recipes had CHEESE which made things much worse). But I got back on it for another few days and cut out most cheese. I’m still very cautious and only eat cheese if I have beans, or vegetables What helped me: 1) Eating yogurt regularly (no pun intended) 2) investing in a squatty potty 3) drinking warm beverages 4) Walking before going to the bathroom I never drank smooth move (my stomach has been really temperamental) but hot tea was great for me. Good luck.
  7. I had that too at first. I think it's a combo of gas and your little pouch saying stop. Definitely take it easy with portions. I could only fit in about 1/3 a small yogurt at first, but 5 weeks in I can eat almost a whole one.
  8. Hi. My gastric bypass was Monday. Monday night was rough but by Tuesday I felt much better. Water has been going down no problem as long as I take my time. Today was my first day on full liquids. My protein shake was a little harder but I did it. My plan allows for no fat, low sugar, low calorie greek yogurt on the full liquid stage. I got about half of that down before I felt terrible. Very sharp pains and short of breath, I hoping walking and taking a break from any fluids will help. Think I'll wait another few days before I try greek yogurt again.

    6 days post opp

Thank you so much for the advise, as I am still in Mexico for a few more weeks I am having a hard time finding things assumed the bariatric protein powder they sold to me would get me through, but today I will look for a clear protein that I can add to yogurt etc.

    Food stages

Before making changes to your plan, you should really follow up and get permission from your team. They lay out plans for us to help with our bodies healing. As for ways to get proteins in, I found that making homemade bone broth soups was an easier way to get my proteins in without shakes or powders. There is also a variety of protein waters available to help with protein intake. I also had / and still have to have 4 - 6 small meals to ensure I get my proteins in daily. The smaller and more frequent meals have helped me immensely. Light and Fit Dannon Yogurt as well as Oikos Zero have upwards of 15g of protein per serving. If you can do pureed food, that would help and you could also add cottage cheese pureed (but as always, check with your team to make sure it's OK)

    Food stages

I had the gastric sleeve on 10/16. My doctor wants his patients to do 3 weeks liquids, 3 weeks soft food, then starting week 7 is normal food. I am 5 days from soft food stage. I however have been struggling to get my protein in because I can't do the protein shakes or powder. I have seriously tried every kind every which way and still have issues. I know some people get to start the soft foods at 2 weeks. If I started early with lunch meat, tuna, retried beans, would that be OK or would it be a big no no. My doc wants me to get 65 grams of protein and its hard to do when I can't do the protein shakes and powder. Right now I'm eating yogurt too try to get some in. The doc approved yogurt, pudding, cream soups on the full liquid diet. Any advice would be appreciated. Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Bypass

Your surgeon should have her/his own version of a liver reducing diet that they will want you to follow. Mine is 3 shakes, plus 2 cups raw non starchy veggies, plus a fat free yogurt or 2 hard boiled eggs. Hope thus helps. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Need help week 5

At five weeks I was plain yogurt and berries in the morning, chewable vitamins only or go to the patch. Broth, cottage cheese, string cheese. Water, water, water ! Sleep, rest heal, don’t worry. Everything will be fine. I’m at 7 months, 149 lbs. down and feeling like a million dollars, riding a bike 10 miles every day. I had major hernia surgery at the same time as my bypass Bariatric surgery. I was a mess. You will be fine, get your stomach right and everything else will follow.
  14. My program and surgeon suggested I make my own protein shakes. And since day 5 I have had zero artificial protein. My program calls it a set point smoothie but its just plain greek yogurt, spinach and add a fruit of your choice. I added strawberries and blue berries. Make it runny if your early out or still on liquids. If you youtube Dr. Matthew Weiner that is where you can learn about the set point smoothies and protein shakes.
  15. I recently had avocado and nuts in yogurt and was definitely getting side eye from people ...

    Need help week 5

Thank you so much for replying! I’m afraid I’ve developed a lactose intolerance after my surgery. I did just mix my own Isopure shake and that does seem to be better. I’m going to try a Greek yogurt for lunch and see how that feels. I guess I just need to dial everything waaaaayyy back.

    November 2018 Sleevers!?!?

My surgery is tomorrow, November 1st. I was on 12 days of Premier Protein shakes and 2 Greek yogurt and all the clear liquids I want. I have been on clear liquids only yesterday and today. Feeling nervous, but really glad the day is just about here.

    Hunger feelings/confusion after surgery

At one week I was drinking protein shakes, sugar free popsicles, jello, maybe a few bites of yogurt. No way thinking of getting a chicken bowl. Call your surgeons office or doctor cause your food plan is nothing I've ever heard one week after surgery. Sent from my Z970 using Tapatalk

Starting stage 3 tomorrow and need recipe help

Same here - no recipes. I’m about to finish my fifth week and just now trying chicken and composed meals. And they go down but with a little bit of a fuss. I ate/eat: Yogurt, apple sauce, soups, refried beans, avocado, soft bananas, smoothies (careful with berry seeds), ground turkey (not beef or chicken) cooked in broth/liquids or sugar free pasta sauce, turkey lunch meat, mashed cauliflower, soft pears, soft beans, turkey and white bean chili from whole foods, egg whites (tummy didn’t like eggs until this week), tuna salad without celery or onions, egg salad - as simple as possible. I didn’t have sensitivity to a normal amount of spices but I tried some chicken & turmeric soup and my whole body rejected it. Hope this helps!

    I don't think I'm ready ):

@RHCD. I love to cook and bake, too. Are you experimenting in your kitchen laoratory to redo recipes to make them "approved" for your new lifestyle? I have been adding collagen hydrolysate protein to most things, subbing applesauce for all or part of the oil required in recipes, and using less sugar and my own version of Zing - 1 cup sugar + 2T Sweetleaf stevia gives the equivalent of 2 c sweetness. 1/2 t = 8 calories. Also working with cottage cheese in recipes, too, blended smooth. Really adds a lot of protein, about the same as using greek yogurt. It's an adventure!

    October 2018 Sleevers

Just reporting in. I had my surgery 10/15. My doctor did it through my navel as I requested and I will have no scars or marks (I know they are tiny anyway). I spent 2 nights in the hospital and a very painful first week. The second week I worked from home and resumed some activities like washing my hair and being human. I'm tolerating lots of foods like mushed avocado, mashed potato, hummus, yogurt, and protein drinks. And since I know a lot of people wonder about going back to work, 2 weeks later I am at my desk job, tired but doing fine. My only stall far was constipation related, I think. Considering all we go through to do this, I think I see the light at the end of the tunnel.

    Protein protein protein

I had good luck with mashed potato, refried beans, oatmeal, pea soup, poached fish, egg, and a lot of protein drinks. In the early stages, I found that the toddler meat sticks were really gentle on my stomach. They're made with poultry and whey and are a good texture to move through and not get stuck. Skim milk and greek yogurt worked. I especially liked the whipped yogurt...it was light and fluffy. In the beginning, you do whatever you can tolerate. Your dietitian should have some great ideas.
