    Cant get help advice needed

Thank you all. I work at the same hospital that my PCP works at so I emailed her personally on Friday demanding answers. I think up to that point her nurse was interceding my messages. I also got the Upper GI disc just in case. I tried calling the bariatric team where I work and none of them would take me on because "they don't fix other surgeon's messes." A friend of mine who was bypassed let me vent last week and then sent me a list of about 5 surgeons in my area who may be able to help. I am going to start calling their offices tomorrow to see if other people can take me on. My other problem though at this point I'm disregarding is because I work for a hospital my insurance is geared for that hospital so if I go to any other hospital in my area they will only pay a small portion of what I need. I'm hoping tomorrow I can get some answers tomorrow.

    Change of Heart

I've been looking into Gastric Bypass or Lap Band for the last 2+ years. I finally decided to pull the trigger. I was 110% focused on having lap band. Yesterday, I went in for my first consult with the surgeon, nutritionist, and dietician...and by the time I left I had completely changed my mind and decided on Gastric Bypass. I'm not usually so wishy-washy with big decisions like that. The only thing from holding me back before was the fact that there is a national average mortality rate of 1 in 200. That seems like a LOT to me. While I realize that a lot of surgeries probably carry that same mortality rate -- it still just kept me from wanting gastric bypass. I was very pleased to find out that my surgeon's entire practice has only lost 5 people in 9 years. All of those were due to that patient's own health problems that were not directly related to surgery. SOOO, with all of that being said - at this point I'm just waiting for my pre-op appointment and prior approval. There is a tentative surgery date of Dec 21!! :frown:  Words can not even express my excitement. I don't know why I put this off so long but I do know that 12-18 months from now, I'm going to be 100 times healthier. I aspire to be one of those skinny bitches I hate so much Anyway, thanks for reading for those that have. I just wanted to share my story so far! Soon, you'll be seeing a lot more (or rather LESS) of me as I'm sure I'll have a million questions I didn't think to ask before the surgery.

    Sleeve or Bypass?

I had the sleeve in 2014, didn't loose as much as I would of liked...an gained the weight back. So right now I'm 7 days post opp the gastric bypass. I think it's easier to "cheat" if you have the sleeve.. But talk to your surgeon.

    Sleeve or Bypass?

@ - Thank you! I'm just happy not to have any sagging skin on my face. I hope my body follows suit. @@mayasmomma - I am not anti-bypass. In fact the friend who recommended my surgeon had the bypass and has been very successful on it. She is 2 years post op and maintaining well. What I am saying is there really is a choice sleeve or bypass. Do your homework about pros, cons etc.... and take into consideration your own body makeup and needs before you make a decision.
  6. I found this website that has great information about sleeve vs. a bypass. This is only a guide and for information gathering only. https://www.obesitycoverage.com/gastric-bypass-vs-gastric-sleeve-surgery/
  7. I have chronic acid reflex and I have a hernia the surgeon wanted to remove the hernia and do the sleeve so that after surgery the heart burn that comes with the sleeve wont be even worse, but after my endoscopy the acid in my stomach is so much worse they don't think the repair of the hernia would do much so the bypass would be best for me I currently take up to 4 40mg of nexium a day to get by with heart burn
  8. Yesterday was my last weight in and the doctor called to say bypass would be best for me now so it has been submitted to my ins just waiting now
  9. I spoke with him and he said that since i don't have it frequently and its a good sign that my reflux went away after pregnancy. He looked at my upper GI and it said no reflux was indicated during the procedure so he thinks the sleeve would be the best option for me. That when I lose weight it will also relieve more pressure off my stomach and its even lesser percentage that i would develop it. So I'm gonna stick with the sleeve and like he said if it gets bad we can always do the bypass. Sent from my SM-G965U using BariatricPal mobile app
  10. Hi. This is all new to me & I’m glad you’re all here to reach out to. I’m having gastric bypass in October & must also have lap band removed. Any body have that sitch? Any complications or problems?
  11. I just recently told my mother and she had a fit at first. But the I had to explain that it was not the gastric bypass . My husband has been soooo supportive and telling me how much better I'm going to feel . My mom is going to my preop appt to my surgeon with me . I just have her permission to tell my dad n ordered h to keep his mouth shut because he is a gossip box. Andy oldest sister just dropped the phone when I told her. Funny !! She said if anybody has researched this , u have. I'm not telling coworkers because the talk n can b caddy. Not even my best friends.. I'm just gone say I changed my eating n got a personal trainer. Which wll b true. They don't need to know right now. Sometimes ppl act funny knowing u r making better changes in your life . Ppl get scared that you will no longer be the fat girl in the group ??????©???®???‚! Well So long to being a fat girl !
  12. I was nervous about telling my husband about it at first, but I asked him to come to the orientation meeting with me and he was good after that. I just wanted him to be able to ask the questions he wanted answers to right then because he always thinks of questions I don't have :-) After, he told me I should do it if it was what I wanted to do, he wasn't going to make the decision for me. He has been my biggest supporter through the whole process. At work, we have someone who has had gastric bypass so that's a conversation we are used to. I told my close friends at work as i was going through the approval process and they were all very supportive. After that, I didn't tell anyone else in my family until insurance approved it. Surprisingly the overwhelming response from all was that they were proud of and excited for me. Now, a week and a half post surgery, I tell people as it comes up. I've found it's easier to tell the truth (when I'm drinking a shake for lunch at a birthday party rather than pizza) than to lie. I'm so excited about it that I think even if my friends disagree with it they don't show it :-)
  13. Not finding anything specific unfortunately, at least nothing "new" or recent (or clearly outlined). Rebound rates aside, if you've got a slight reflux now, it will be amplified with the sleeve and reduced with the Bypass, based simply on what the surgery does. And in the off chance that you end up with a major problem... there is no going back after the sleeve, 90% of your stomach is rotting in medical waste somewhere (or been incinerated), with the bypass, everything (for the most part) is all still in there. The sleeve is ONLY a restrictive surgery, there isn't any reduction in caloric intake caused by the surgery itself outside of forcing you to reduce your intake, but then there are all the "slider" foods etc. I made the mistake of choosing the lapband back in 2011 because I was under-educated about the bypass, and well, I didn't want to make any permanent changes, which is ironic, because, I didn't get any permanent weight loss. So, second surgery to remove the band and revise to the bypass in March and I really couldn't be happier... I really do wish I went with the bypass from the get go. A personal (in real life) friend of mine had the sleeve, and he's getting it revised to the bypass because of the lack of progress. Just things to be aware of.

  15. My surgeon does not require a pre-op diet. is this normal? it seems everyone is on some type of liquid diet prior to surgery. Thoughts? P.S. I have a slipped lapland and is being converted to bypass, not sure if that makes a difference. Thanks, Maggie

    The Honeymoon is Over

YES IT WORKS!! NO, it's NOT magic! Comon guys--remember the ol' "tool" jazz. Is it easier to pound in a nail with a hammer or with a rock? With a hammer of course--but you STILL have to POUND! I am relatively new to the band, but in my experience life is consistent. There certainly are people who have gastric bypass and gain weight back. Do you seriously think you can get rid of the fat demon forever? I believe with all my heart you CAN win the war--but don't think for a second there won't be lots of battles! Thinking the band will do it all, or gastric bypass, or lipo or phen/fen or whatever is just setting you up to let your guard down when the demon raises its head. IT WILL. Get READY for those times! By being here DeLarla's enlisting help in her battle--and thereby all of our battles. You never know what one thing you might read herr will get you out of that "I've gotta eat!" struggle. This band is a great opportunity. Please overcome your fear and grab it for all you're worth--but steel yourself to WORK at it and come here and share your failures and your successes and Celebrate everyone of them! You COULD fail--but there is a VERY GOOD chance you CAN SUCCEED! ANd what the heck would it be worth if it were easy? Sorry....hope I don't sound like I'm preaching. I've just been around for awhile and I've seen what works and what doesn't. And work is what it takes--and sometimes there is incredible joy in that.
  17. Hi Tonya, You have a lot going on right now. I wonder if you switched to Protein shakes for a couple of days if the feeling would go away. I had my gallbladder out in November and tolerate meat just fine. I was eating steaks a few weeks later. Do you think any of this might have to do with anxiety about your surgery? It doesn't seem like a trip to your PCP would hurt anything. I'd tell your surgeon about your gum, but I bed they'd see it anyhow. It's probably in the part of your stomach that will be cut away. I've never heard of gum staying for 5 years. Good luck and I hope you find something that comforts you so you can relax before surgery.
  18. ....and I'm confident this is the right decision for me. That is, until I stop and think about the whole process of surgery and beyond. I worry that I will become hyper-conscious of what I will be eating from here on out, and that I will become obsessed with food. Of course, if I had been aware of what I was eating up to this point, I wouldn't be in this predicament, now would I? My surgeon tells me I am the perfect patient (although I suspect he says that to everyone LOL!) since I've lost 35 lbs so far. I don't have a pre-surgery diet, other than clear liquids the day before, and he doesn't think I will require a hernia repair, so it *should* be easy-breezy other than pain afterwards. >sigh!< I could ramble on and on... Please send any positive energy my way on Monday--I'll try to post when I'm out I surgery and back in my room! Best of luck, my November brothers and sisters!

Normal people just don't get it!!!

I made the choice not to mention this to others. I avoided the negative feedback. I am doing the bypass for my health and live a healthier lifestyle with this bypass as a tool to help me. I tested this out by saying, what do you think of my friend who is going to have a bypass to help her lose weight for her health? All the response was negative.

Just venting ~ WLS not work ?!?

Yes it will continue because my meeting that I had to attend at the doctor's office we were told your big friends are going to be jealous and hurt your feelings before anyone else. My reply would have bee "If you don't feel we have to work at it why don't you come on and get banded with me and we can do it together". Then send her to a seminar first. She will see how much work there is with this tool. Hang in there girl Another thing I have a problem with is people that are not even doing any of it comparing me to people who have had gastic bypass. I tell them I'm not even banded yet but there still will not be any comparison because my is expected to take longer so I don't gain it back. LOL
  22. Hi all. I have had a lap band since 3/2009. Although I have maintained a 70 pound weight loss, the band has been progressively tightened to the point that now I have esophagus irritation so it has been determined to be "failed" and now I need it removed. I started my journey at 320 pounds, and now I am at 250. Goal weight 180 pounds. On Monday I head into surgery to have the band removed (it has been released for two months) and a gastric bypass performed. My question is how many that have has this procedure done were unable to do it in one surgery? The surgeon only gives it a 50/50 shot as apparently the underlying tissue associated with the band site may not support correctly creating the new pouch. I would really hate to have to do this in two separate surgeries several months apart, and apparently I won't know until I wake up how it turns out. All pre surgery checks including a barium swallow and an endoscopy all indicate the band is still properly placed, but apparently they have to be inside during the surgery to know for sure if there has been any erosion. Thanks in advance for any input! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  23. Wanted to create a dedicated thread as I don't see a lot of posts about Maimonides in NY. I have my first consultation with the bariatric physician's assistant and a nutritionist as well as a virtual consult with the surgeons on July 12th. They sent me a welcome packet that stated which steps their clinic requires for surgery. The steps are to schedule a 2-in-1 appointment with the PA and nutritionist, An endoscopy, blood work, and a psych consult and they do provide someone if you don't have your own. and cardiology/pulmonary evaluations which are an EKG and sleep study. I have pre-scheduled everything but the psych eval. Prior to the surgery, they also request that you get clearance from your PCP, so I would make that appointment as well. I will update this thread as I go through the process for others to reference. Metroplus basically told me they don't have requirements as long as your BMI is over 40 or 35 with sleep apnea, diabetes, or high blood pressure.
  24. Hi Everyone! I am suppose to be taking a pre opt multi vitamin with minerals 2 weeks before surgery. Then it says on same sheet at bottom stop taking vitamin E. Well everything has freaking vitamin E in it. I’m going crazy and my surgery is suppose to be on 21st. I may have to postpone because of this. I’m still taking my multi vitamin that has E in it. Just doesn’t make sense. Can anyone share what pre opt brand of multi vitamin they took before gastric bypass? Thanks so much!
